"This seems to rub off on his players."

"If you've watched Kyle (Utah) and Patterson (TCU) they are out there on the field yelling and screaming and congratulating guys when they make a good play."

Exactly my point. If the coach doesn't care, why should the players...tone at the top. Why is BYU paying Mendenhall $600K per year to do nothing?? If the fan base buys into the football is #5, Mendenhall doesn't have much responsibility - - does he.

I know Bob Anae beyond his position as a BYU coaching staffer. I have nothing but respect for his attitude and his mindset. Coach Mendenhall has done something to BYU football and brought discipline to the ranks. We all can recall the number of disciplinary issues BYU players created. It was like the Honor Code was a joke in the athletic department.I acknowledge Mendenhall for his thinking and his effort to instill in the program that playing football at BYU is a privilige--and a responsibility of cherishing a spirit of integrity.
The Problem Isn't | 12:22 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
BYU's performance. It is the stupid expectations their fans have and elaborate on until about the first of November every year. they are what they are and that isn't bad...it just isn't what Cougar fans think it is

Minor-league football | 12:34 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
The problem with current BYU fan expectation is that BYU is just minor-league college football, not big-time. Be happy with 10-3; you're not likely to get better than that, every.

Go look at Lavell's average record. His rep is based on longevity, not because he was a world-beater (one Mythical NC notwithstanding).
congratulations BYU '08 season | 1:19 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008

What a season that was!
Started out with "Quest for Perfection!", "BYU could be in NC game!", "Maxie for Heisty!"...but then they lost to TCU. All down hill from there.
Embarrassed by big loss to big brothers Utah. Capped by loss to lowly Arizona.

Dick Harmon. You have correctly id byu's need for change. but DONT look to the past. for every quality win there is embarassment. remember 12-0? hawaii takes a knee in order to NOT score 82 in game 13. remember the cotton bowl win? it took a very LOUSY KSU quarterback and a GREAT BYU quarterback (he had to be great because those slow heifers on the O-Line let him get sacked 8 times. They were sacking him so much they got cramps and sarkesian beat a backup to EAK out a win. and then the next year the opponent nearly played for a NATIONAL title and BYU loses to TULANE or MARSHALL or somebody, badly. this team has NEVER defended and Coach M hopefully will be the first to bring in some corner speed. Otherwise, we'll be left to celebrate the occasional 48 to 45 victory and think it means something. looking at films and ordering pizza just won't get it Dick. Recruit speed, BYU is a great school. there are some fast DECENT living guys out there. go get them Bronco.

Until BYU makes the goal of playing in a BCS game every year or Winning a National Championship. They will remain in the same place they are today. Then and only then will they accept the responsibility to do all the rest. Leadership and commitment come when your team goal "seems" beyond your grasp. Then and only then will real commitment and leadership step up.

Mendenhall is such an obvious fraud. He is trying to be a copy of Lavell Edwards. He is playing a part and the facade is thin and lame. He needs to find his own identity... somewhere else. His influence will dissipate from here on. It is all downhill from here, Cougars!
True Blue Athletic Supporter | 7:05 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Please get off the bandwagon if you don't like what BYU football has achieved under Bronco Mendenhall. We don't need you. We don't want you. We will be much better off without you. Farewell false friends.
Recruit speed | 8:12 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
BYU needs speed, plain and simple. Without it the Cougars will not meet their goals. The days of scoring 45 points a game are over. Without speed on both sides of the ball BYU will not go undefeated. If you watched Boise State and TCU play, it was all about speed and mental toughness.

Either of which would've trounced the BYU team that showed up in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Evolution to a division II or III teir seems like a natural progression for this program.

Hmmmm....cliques and sub-groups????

That'll kill ANY team in ANY sport at ANY level faster than a botched play.

Don't my beloved Cougars remember what "team" stands for????
