so how did the defensive genius who was promoted to head coach have such a poor defense? has he been too far removed from the real defensive genius bronco's former head coach. not crowton but rocky long. long was able to build good teams at the hole that is UNM. the cougars need to morph alright. they need to recruit better and they need a better coach on the defensive side of the ball. ah la rocky long. the cougars need a new infusion of defensive thinking and coaching and recruiting. rocky long is the answer. no changes in staffing will mean no change in results. bronco make rocky an offer its the best gift that you could give cougar fans this christmas season.

cougar fans deserve a present after the rotten egg the cougars left on the field in las vagus.

If I hear another scripture quote I'm gonna throw up. It's just football grow up!

I don't usually read boards like this but I wanted to see how many ridiculous and poorly informed Coug fans would take the time to comment. For SJ Bobkins, Brian Johnson's "pathetic" QB rating is 148.3. Good enough for second in the conference and 18th in the nation. Ahead of the guy who kicked your butt in the Vegas Bowl -Tuitama. And ahead of many other QB's who have, I'm sure, better arms than your grandma. all Brian Johnson has done this year is go 12-0 and lead his "Team" to the Sugar Bowl.

Come on...of course other teams have figured out how to get after BYU, I mean they DID win the conference two years in a row...who wouldn't be gunning for the top dog???

As for the losses, look at who they lost to. Utah (headed to the Sugar Bowl) and TCU (the best team in the MWC). Arizona could be debated either way, good or bad.

Leave it up to Harmon to characterize a 10 win season as underachieving! GREAT JOB COUGARS!!!

The BYU football team has brought much attention to the LDS church and to the University and it will continue to do so only if it is a high level team. I think it is time for Coach Mendenhall to start upgrading the team and forget the simple little offense he seems to think is just fine. A new offensive coordinator would do wonders for the team as most of the problems are with the coaching staff in my opinion.

And as for the goody two shoes attitude by some that as long as there is harmony and love not reqruiting players that will fall right into the groove, either we are going to have a football team and drop a level and play for fun. I hopw Bronco will get the message that he needs to step it up a lot. Love the Cougars!
john in texas | 2:16 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
All you experts, like Wayne, for instance, should go to the athletic director at BYU and convince him to fire the coaching staff (including Bronco) the whole darn lot of them and hire you because you have all the answers and can promise and back up your promise a 13-0 season from now on every season.

Gad, where is your head? Have you ever worn a pair of shoulder pads?

I salute Bronco and all his staff and all the players for what they did this year. You have to REMEMBER that the situation at BYU is unlike ANY other athletic program in America. Winning is great but it is not the greatest thing. IN this old Texas boy's opinion an attitude adjustment is much needed.
The sports programs at BYU are going to continue to improve and it will be because no compromise was made. There will be more Mountain West and National championships. There will be a mountain of goodwill for the church and BYU to follow.

In reality we are all athletes at BYU. Championships will come when we work TOGETHER. Get that, TOGETHER.
Let the boys play football | 2:24 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
If the BYU football team learned just one thing this season it should be this:

Let your actions speak louder than your words.

As much as I like Bronco, the "Quest" was a bad idea from the start. Great as a team goal to be kept to themselves, but, way too arrogant to be emblazoned on t'shirts and broadcast to the world, especially with the glaring weaknesses this team exhibited:

Defense: suspect from the very beginning because most of their key players graduated, the defense was by far the weakest part of the team; a tissue-thin front 7 who only had one player capable of pressuring the opposing QB; a defensive backfield who made every team they played look like they were loaded with world class sprinters.

Offense: a very talented group that spoke loudly, but underperformed badly in big games.

Special Teams: hot and cold; performing well at times, but never playing up to their full potential.

Bottom line for next season:

Redemption: Under promise; over deliver!

Shut your mouths and let your play do the talking.
Hero of Canton | 2:32 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
I grow weary of the 'BYU is the Lord's University' talk and the '14 million Mormons, can't 11 play defense' talk. Stop being Roger Reid about this. Stop pretending that you represent all the members of the LDS Church, I am Mormon and I can't stand BYU. Learn to keep the 'miracles on the field if you take care of buisness off the field' talk quiet and remember that you are a bad football team that beat Northern Iowa and got lucky against a horrific Washington State team.

BYU as a whole is arrogant, from their fans to their coaches to their players. The Good Lord doesn't care about your football team anymore than He cares about Texas Christian University, Gonzaga, Notre Dame or the only University in the world actually started by Brigham Young.
BYU Fan | 2:32 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
I'll admit that I was one of those BYU fans who truly believed that BYU was going to go undefeated. But the fact is BYU is just TOO SLOW on defense and the coaches know it, that's why they have the "bend but don't break" slogan. BYU NEEDS SPEED if it wants to even think about a BCS bid. On offense there's just no excuse for it's lack of production. Unlike the D the O has the athletes to compete with anyone in the nation. Coach Anae needs to be replaced, some of his play calls are just flatout stupid. Max needs to carry football during the off-season 24-7!!!!!!!!! , study the other team's defense and for sake of all that is good, CHECK DOWN!!!
Mike R. | 2:35 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
BYU ought to be looking at the Mountain Crest QB Alex Kuresa. He's a Sophomore but nearly beat Timpview (the BYU JV) in the State Semi finals. He is a competitor that appears not to be scared of anything. He will be a force in High School football the next two years. He's short but he can play.

Fire Jamie Hill. Hire Rocky Long.
BYU's Problem | 2:54 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
It is not arrogance or maturity or experience. It is a lack of a consistant running game and a lack of pressure and coverage on defense. The defense can't take over and their offense relies to much on the passing game. Hall is a decent quarterback, but not the type that can win big games on his own. He is just not that type of quarterback. BYU should work on their running game and upgrade the defense. The defense is more about recruiting ability, which is alway a liability in Provo. The running game is play calling and a commitment to the run. The can recruit enough quality backs to produce a good running game, and they always produce a good line. This would take pressure off the defense as well.
Look | 2:59 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
Yes it was disappointing season the WAY it ended and the Cougars KNOW they have to do better from coaching all the way down to the trainers. The Cougars will roar back and take the conference by storm. Good things will come. As a fan I'll take an 10-3 season over a 4-8 season.

P.S. Roll Tide.
Henry Drummond | 2:57 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
During the "glory years" about 1/3 of the team were non-LDS. They were also willing to hire non-LDS coaches. I think "having character" has come to mean that only Elder's Quorum President's need apply. I just wonder if there is any chance that BYU will realize they can expand their recruiting and have players with good character at the same time.
Robert Jennings | 3:01 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
I find it intersesting that there is this idea that you can't be a great athlete and also be spiritual. I think Tim Tebow provides the greatest example that this is not true. The guy puts scripture references on his face during the game. I realize that BYU is unique, but to assume that all good kids are mormon is very misleading. Some of the best, most Christian people I have ever known are not only not mormon, but don't even know much about the mormon church. I ran into a family on my mission that had a son that went to byu to play football (they were protestant), and could not say enough about how much he loved it (Incidentally, he was a DB).
Joe Smith | 3:05 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
It's time for BYU to join the WAC...Or perhaps move on down to Division II.

My latest revelation says they will!
UTAH_MAN | 3:04 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
harvey unga is overrated. as soon as he's handed the ball and approaches the hole, he stands up=poor coaching and just plain stupid. max hall hasn't been reading defenses well since the tcu game. he can't get off his 1st or 2nd receivers and forces too many balls. if he's going to avoid the sack and run, i'd recommend holding the ball with two hands. byu never has any kind of intensity. they're actually fairly boring to watch. oh wait, max hall gets fired up and gives cheap shots after he throws an interception. i wanted them to beat AZ, but they let us (the MWC) down. go TCU, kill stupid boise state and go air force and of course, GO UTES!!!
re: Joe Smith | 3:10 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
It's too bad Utah doesn't have fans worthy of its team.
Brother Brigham says | 3:11 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
Cancel intercollegiate sports at BYU, as the church did at BYU-Idaho; they are inimical with the values of the church no matter how many firesides Bronco stages or how much PR the church gets from the team.
Robert Jennings | 3:14 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
In regards to referencing scriptures etc, it can be difficult to know when it is appropriate to acknowledge spiritual guidance. I have experienced this personally. We may feel blessed, and so feel it necessary to acknowledge where we believe that help comes from, in an effort to insure that others recognize that we dont assume we are taking credit ourselves. However, I have also noticed a flip side to this. By so doing, others who may not be experiencing this success automatically assume that, from your comment, they must not be spiritual. It is my experience that it is more important to recognize this internally and only talk about it under unique and appropriate situations. It is important that students/faculty/staff at BYU recognize that it is a very unique environment where these kinds of discussions are great. However, they should also be respectful of the implications of their language outside Provo and how that may be misinterpreted.
magnus | 3:16 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
A couple of observations.

First, I am seriously unimpressed with Max Hall. He keys on his first receiver, takes to long to read the defense, and holds on to the ball way too long. but I don't think it is entirely his fault...

Second, I am more unimpressed with Anae. As the season wore on it became painfully obvious that other teams were adjusting to the Cougar offense and that the Cougars were not adjusting back. When the anouncers of the game say that your offence is predictable and wonder why you don't just run the ball in certain situations you have a serious problem. When you have a 320 lb offensive line and a 240 lb running back and the only time you run the football between the tackles is on draw plays YOU HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM! Good coaches adjust their scheme to fit their talent, BYU isn't Texas Tech, the backs don't run 4.3 40s and neither do the receivers.

Third, BYU's defensive front 7 is solid, it's the secondary that has problems. If the opposing quarterback has time to set his feet and look downfeild then he is going to find somebody open, every time.
Brother Brigham | 3:42 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
says Utah should stop wasting taxpayer money and just play intramural sports. The true University of Utah can represent Utah with teams that bear his name and honor his legacy.
Dear Dick Harmon, | 3:39 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
What you have done with this article is manufactured more excuses for performance that diminished as the season progressed. A 10-3 record is something to be proud of but fans are sensing a shift in the excellence that once was Cougar football. Therein is the angst of the otherwise respectable season.

Instead of reporting of philosophical differences with other seasons, perhaps you could take a look at the genesis of the new priorities that have recently become the icon of Cougar football.

You know the priorities I'm talking about, Dick, 1. Faith, 2. Family, 3. Knowledge, 4. Friends, 5. Football. This is going to be a new challenge for you, Mr. Harmon. It will require that you dig into and report on the facts. Answer questions like:

1. Where did the priority system come from?
2. Who is driving it to the players?
3. Are our scholarship players really supposed to put football last in their lives?
4. Should we as fans get used to the idea of results being #5 on our list?

The way the team plays is a reflection of the tone at the top. Please go dig into that issue, Mr. Harmon.

Sincerely,
Mendenhall | 6:47 a.m. | 3:50 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
"need to change his attitude and then the attitude of this team with change. They are just average right now. This is a footall team that represents BYU. This is not a heavenly team on a heavenly mission. Our divine power does not care who wins."

Insightful comment. Start with the new priorities that have been laid at the feet of the Cougar players. Football is #5. Guess what, they play like it is #5 in their lives.

What is up with that priority list? The Team reflects the tone at the top.

2008 BYU | 3:53 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008

Perhaps, 2008 BYU:

1) false hope --aka Quest for Perfection
2) false hope --aka Heisman candidate Maxie is just overrated "sissy" QB
3) false hope --aka BCS bowl talk, ie team is not that good
4) false hope --especially after a squeak by UW (which ended up winless) and blow-out of UCLA (which this year could be blown by any descent team)
5) false hope --which is why players have the attitude that no team is better than BYU, ie they only beat themselves even after big (BIG) losses at TCU, Utah.
Love the Max Hall Bashers | 4:04 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
They were probably the same ones who questioned John Beck's manhood after he openly cried at a press conference.

Max Hall isn't the first Cougar quarterback to suffer a "sub-par" 10-3 season his junior year that ended with two humiliating blowouts, one in a bowl game: The other one was Ty Detmer.

I doubt anyone here would question Ty Detmer's ability.
overrated sissy??? | 4:14 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
for an example of a overrated sissy, see mirror.

False bravado from a blogger who was never good enough to play waterboy on his dad's peewee league team.
No problem. | 4:32 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
Does anyone really worry about how BYU will do next year? They'll be great. Others are on the decline. I thought this was a great rebuilding year, which is what it was. Utah would take our record next year in a heartbeat. Now Kyle has to play with his recruits... Relax. Things are going to be great.
P.S. Yewts, please don't embarrass us vs. Alabama. Just keep it within, say, 30 points.
Mr. BYU | 4:33 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
To: "A Fan" and others who so arrogantly state that BYU's problem is arrogance! Give me a break!!!

So setting goals to win the conference and make it to a BCS bowl game is arrogance?!!! I thought that was setting stretch goals to see what you can accomplish!

Haven't any of you set goals, or do you just take it "one day at a time"? No wonder you haven't been able to amount to Jack Q Squat!!

I would go with BYU's problems as being a lack of talent and speed in the defensive backfield. Along with indecision on the part of Mr. Hall. And how about lack of quickness on the O-line, along with Unga being too tentative in his running and not hitting the hole at full speed running north and south, not laterally. I could go on, but won't.

The bottom line is BYU set goals and tried to achieve them but fell short. Well, BIG DEAL! Let's work harder in recruiting, at practice and in the games. Hopefully the coaching will work harder at play calling as well.
Ernest T. Bass | 4:47 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
Why doesn't Bronco game plan to attack the opponent's weaknesses and to take away the opponent's strengths?
I don't think I've ever heard of a coach who's only preparation was to continue to work on what they do and not prepare for an opponent.
That is a HUGE flaw of Bronco's.
Majerus would devise 3 or 4 ways to take away the opponent's 3 or 4 best plays and their best player. Teams rarely beat the Utes by their usuall methods, they had to resort to different players and schemes because Majerus would out-prepare and game plan for them.
There is NO excuse for not using all 14 practices. None.
There is NO excuse for not game planning based on the opponent's tendencies.
Until Bronco changes that, byu will rarely beat good, ranked teams and be victorious in bowl games.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T | 5:01 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
Maybe BYU should start by respecting their opponents. Showing a lack of respect to their opponents not only motivates the opponents, but gives BYU players a false sense of superiority. Recipe for disaster.

Although, as a Ute fan, I like it. I like how disprespecting their opponents sets BYU up for failure!!

Folks - Reality Please | 5:46 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
Look, BYU fields a team that is probably 98% LDS. The fact that they routinely compete for the top spot in the MWC and a top 25 ranking is a miracle akin to the parting of the red sea. NO program has a more limited (self-imposed) pool of recruits and yet look what they accomplish. Of course they need to work toward constant improvement but 11-2, 11-2 and 10-3 with an all-LDS, white, RM, Eagle Scout squad is nothing short of miraculous!!
Seperation of Chruch | 5:47 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
"First and foremost, I want it to represent the VALUES of the LDS Church"

So are you saying that athletes at other schools don't have values? Just because they don't have LDS values doesn't mean that they are any less "righteous" they BYU athletes. Take for example ND which a catholic school, I doubt their alumni having the same issues as BYU alum.

Unlike most of you I belive in the "serpartion of chruch and state" and "seperation of chruch and sports".

Football is a violent sport why in the world would you want to tie the two together is beyond my Ute education. I guess I'm just not righteous as U.

Sports are about winning not who's more of a saint. If Quest for Perfection is what matters then maybe BYU should just shut down the athletic programs.
BYU Fans Need a Reality Check | 5:58 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
"There will be more Mountain West and National championships. There will be a mountain of goodwill for the church and BYU to follow."

You must live in the land of of hobbits, unicorns, and fairy's if you think you'll be a National Champion. Make the BCS first then talk about national titles.

As far as goodwill to the LDS Church its stance against civil rights (Proposition-8 in CA) says more about it then any BYU win.

Try separating Church and Sports... I might HATE BYU but that doesn't mean I also hate my neighbor.
bYuchick93 | 6:39 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
so first off i would like to thank max for the beauitful game on saturday and on nov.22. thanks. But what i think, is that next year (think about it) will be his. he screwed up, completely lost, and pissed everyone off. So all year he will be thinking about this years Utah vs. Byu game.
Utah fans: i hate to say it but you guys are better then BYU this year. Your defnese is faster, more agressive, your recivers can run faster, catch better, your running backs can read defenses and juke- there is so no joke about your quarter back either. Bryan johnson has a good arm period. But mark my words in blue- next year when you come to provo without Bryan, or that unstoppable defense and we have the senior quarterback, you will have nothing to AT ALL to say. :) thank you!
GO COUGARS!

BYU has some seriois coaching problems,

lack of execuyion

A coaching problem

Predictable offense,

Coaching problem and discipline problem

uninpsired defense, defenders way off the player they are covering,

no or little adjustment offensively or defensively,

coaching problem

team not prepared to play,

BYU has some serious coaching problems.

You guys need speed, speed and more speed. That's the name of the game today. If you can get just a little more of it in the secondary, maybe, just maybe you can then compete with my Utes.

Also, stop complaining about your coach. He's got the team moving in the right direction. It'll soon be your turn to crash the BCS. Until then go Utes!
RE: Love the Max Hall Bashers | 7:06 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
"I doubt anyone here would question Ty Detmer's ability."

*raises hand*

I will. How Super Bowl teams did he quarterback? In 14 total seasons in the NFL, Detmer has played in 54 games (with 25 starts), totaling 6,351 yards passing with 34 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.

Sounds like a great quarterback to me.

Dave in NJ | 7:54 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
Went to the game and sat behind the bench and offer these observations:
* Bronco shows no emotion and rarely coaches the players
* BYU has a lot of wasted scholarships on players who will never contribute on the field and do not look like athletes
* BYU was completely out of shape and gassed.
* BYU had no emotion and Arizona was really pumped up to play
* BYU's talent level (speed) was painful to watch in person
* BYU's defensive play calls bordered on the absurd. There was no zone blitzes, and the CB's were playing off the receivers by 15 yards on a 3rd and 10
* BYU's offensive play calling was atrocious. Some Arizona fans sitting next to us could not understand why BYU was not running the ball and said that is how other teams beat them this year
* Anae's offense lacks imagination. There is no screens, draws, sweeps, or draw traps. You can run the same thing at Texas Tech because they have athletes
* The missed fields goals as usual
* The biggest spark I saw the whole night was when Pitta and Kozlowski got into a fight on the sidelines.

Get off Bronco's back | 8:54 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
There is nothing I dis-like more than "faux-fans".( fakes) If you do not like Bronco that is not his fault, that is your problem. If you think he is proud or arrogant maybe you are the one that is proud or arrogant. If you think he will NOT learn from this season maybe you should dig out your bright red attire or simply just come out of the closet and admit your true colors are indeed RED. Bronco's quest for perfection comes directly from the New Testament: "be ye therefore perfect.....". We all know no one on this earth is perfect but we are instructed to try. Sure, we really do want excellence in football, but I will take solid young men who are prepared to be better husbands and fathers any day. I will take solid young men who are prepared and willing to serve in the Lord's Church any day. Do you get my point? I sure hope so. On a purely academic level just in case you despise we who are LDS, I will take well-educated young men who are contributors and builders in their chosen fields and communities anyday.
Anonymous | 8:56 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
go back and read the articles at the beginning of the year...BYU was known to have a green defense and not projected to win the MWC...in fact, I think they were projected third or fourth.
Football #1 | 8:59 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
These Priorities are messed up!

1. Faith
2. Family
3. Knowledge
4. Friends
5. Football

What a joke!

When you are at Church, then Faith is #1.
When you are with your family, Family is #1.
When you are in class or studying, Knowledge is #1.
When you are with Friends, they are #1.
WHEN YOU STEP ONTO THAT FIELD, FOOTBALL BETTER BE #1 OR YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME!

Bronco needs to leave the religion to the religion teachers. He gets paid VERY WELL to coach FOOTBALL, NOT CHURCH! You don't see Professors from the BYU Religion Department calling the plays on the field do you?

Bronco needs to either take football seriously or join the Church Education System as a seminary teacher!

Make your choice, Bronco, but you can't do both!

That my favorite team had it's 14th 10+ win season and has won 23 conference titles. I am also grateful that we are talking about improving on
10-3, rather than jut making a bowl like the Crowton years. BYU is still strong and we have no need to panic. Step out of the moment and you will realize BYU football is just fine. Recruiting services still have our classes of the last 2 years ranked 2nd only to Notre Dame in the non-BCS group. Bronco sees the need and I think it will be filled.

Heyy great game BYU by giving Arizona they're first bowl game WIN in ...hmm about a decade!! I mean you guys have such a fast secondary on defence I don't know Arizona's wide outs could've gotten anywhere, let alone score!! I just wanted to say Congratulations Max on playing tea party with Pitta and Collie!!!haha well Cougs great game. Oh, and thank all you BYU fans for talking mess about Utah? Hopefully all you fans will be watching, when we play ALABAMA (BCS TEAM...NOT ARIZONA) and win in the Sugar Bowl. But hey who knows, you might play Arizona again in a bowl next year, and next time you MIGHT win!! Well Merry Christmas and try again next years-Love from the Utes

BYU just needs a defense, everything else will be ok. Got to get a defense.
