Poor Austin, Since you been a cougar loser you have seen the Utes go 2 BCS Bowls. Maybe you should leave right now and make something of your NFL Career, but if you come from the team down south you will only be holding a clipboard in the nfl ( Beck & Doman). Maybe you should take some lessons from Steve Smith.
Its called being a fan | 10:53 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Coach Wannabe: That is what fans do. They critique what they see. Nothing wrong with that. I am sure that you just sit in front of your TV with a permanent smile on your face when your team goes down. Good for you. every fan expects every play to go their way. When they don't, they through their arms up, get disgruntled, etc. No fan wants to admit that an opponent is better, but sometimes, they are. Prior to the game, I don't think that Arizona was much better than BYU, but they sure looked that way.
There is a reason | 10:52 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
There is a reason BYU didnt execute or play well in their 3 loses. They were outmatched. Why can't the cougars give credit where it is due. TCU, Utah, and Arizona were strong opponents and made it difficult for them to execute. I think BYU even overacheived at 10-3.

BYU fans should feel lucky, they could have easily been 7-6 or 6-7. (UNLV, Colo St., UW, New Mex were near misses) No one will fear the '09 cougs.

BYU is like notre dame | 10:54 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Its not that they dont live up to the 'potential' they are just overrated. 10-3 was actaully overachieving for this team.
10-3 Mediocore? | 10:54 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Do you think 95% of teams in the country would think 10-3 is just a fair record? If Utah State was 10-3 they would be saying it is perfection. If Most of the Mnt. west or any other conference was 10-3 it would be good news! The season was a bit dissapointing but 10-3 is not mediocore. Jeff Call (as usual) needs to get a clue.
RE: execution?? robots | 10:57 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Yeah, i have never heard K Twit or Brian Johnson ever say the same things to the press in a press conference or after a game, nor have I ever heard them say the execution word, nope not ever.
Bronco to blame | 11:06 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Bronco deserves a lot of credit for the improvemnt of the program the last 3 years. He has really changed the on field success and image of the program.

However, this is a FOOTBALL team not a political campaign or outreach program. I can appreciate, at some level, that Bronco is looking beyond football for these players, but it can not take the priority he has created. As everyone knows, Bronco talks about goals and achievment and mastery to point it gets in the way of playing the games.

I believe Bronco needs to game plan and teach football much more than he does.
BYU Fan | 11:06 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
I have to laugh every time I read the "we beat ourselves... no one has beaten us" comment. It was repeated after the Utah game and again after this game. Guess what... if you lost... the other team beat you. When the scoreboard at the end of the night has more points for the opposing team... your team has lost. Simple concept that some fans can not quite seem to grasp.
Perfect Quest | 11:03 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Quest for Perfection t-shirt $10.
Ticket and travel costs to go thump TCU $900.
Ticket to see y dominate the Utes $200.
Ticket and travel costs to Vegas Bowl $800.

Two losses to Arizona teams on Saturday . . . PRICELESS!!!!!

I love it | 11:05 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
It is so sweet to see the proud and haughty fall on their face. I love watching byu fans and players mire in self-pity and rationalizations. I love to watch austin collie whine and blame. I love to watch max hall turn it over. One day byu will think other teams can beat them, but i hope not this way is much more entertaining. It truly is a wonderful day to be a cougar hater. Thank you so much. I think 2009 will be even better, come back austin!
an embarassment | 11:07 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
BYU, thanks for embarassing the conference. We needed that win over lousy arizona. You just validated what everyone was saying about your weak schedule and weak conference. Hopefully TCU and Utah can make up for it.
re..10-3 Mediocre? | 11:10 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Yes, this season for your Cougs has to be considered very mediocre. Let me spell this out for you. The reason it is mediocre is because your coach, players, administration, marketing department and fan base took it upon THEMSELVES to declare the 2008 Cougars as the BCS Busters, last December! With that triuphant victory over UCLA and their 3rd string QB and RB, the table was being set for the "Quest For Perfection." It wasn't the evil media who overhyped your Cougs, it was you! You guys told us how great you were going to be, and then got smacked down by TCU and Utah. Please don't try to paint a rosy picture for this season and pretend that your self-proclaimed expections were not just about football.

Of course USU or SDSU would die for 10 wins, but the difference is they didn't spend 8 months in the offseason thumping their chests telling the world how great they were going to be.

That clear enough for you!
Adjustments | 11:17 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Bronco and Staffs biggest weakness. Game time adjustments
Season Review | 11:18 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Positives from the season-
10 wins-even though quality is questionable 10 wins is 10 wins
Collie- is the real deal
Progam is much better than 5 years ago

Negitives
Weak schedule- Wash was winless, UCLA was bad, and a d-II team-bad non-conference
Play three good teams three blowouts-BYU was not on the same level as AZ, TCU or UTAH and not even close to TCU, that game was super ugly.
Hall is a turnover machine- is not the quaterback many thought he was
Defense- not only in the three loses. UNLV put up 35 in Provo, Colorado St. scored over 40. Looked really slow at times.

I don't think you can have BYU as the favorities in the MWC next year. TCU is so much better than the cougs. Colorado St. could begin to rebuild to a good program and UNLV should go to a bowl game next year. Add that with a good non-conference schedule and BYU goes 9-4 next year

RE: 10-3 Mediocore? | 11:15 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
You must be a BYU Fan, aka Idiot. 10-3 is mediocore for a team that was ranked or should I say over ranked at 16 in the Nation. The best news for Utah is taht Max Hall and Reed will be returning. Yipeee.
Cougar | 11:26 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Our only problem is execution. It has nothing to do with BYU's talent level. If we execute to our maximum potential we will dominate everyone(yes I enjoy drinking the Kool Aid). As long as we don't have to play any road games against teams with equivalent or better talent, 10-3 is always doable. After all, football is only our 5th priority(after our friends).
Oh boy | 11:27 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
You know BYU fans are spoiled when they begin to sound like Ute fans. Such as the ones who were calling for Whittingham's head when he lost to UNLV last year.

But don't worry, if the Ute defense gives up rushing yardage to Alabama like it did against TCU and BYU we'll see Ute fans saying the same things.
UTES #1 | 11:39 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Get OVER THE FACT THAT THE "Kittens" were not that good this year. The D News has this love affair with the team down south. Hears some Truth - The UTES are the dominate team this year. Arizona was a mediocre team in a horrible conferance this year. Its not all "execution" like the coaches keep harping on. It's the fact that the team can't perform. Period. They got spanked against TCU, and Rolled against the Utes! Then they talk big and get Smacked by Arizona. Try writing about the team that actually is going to accomplish something this season!
Get used to losing | 11:40 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
BYU fans need to forget the national spot light and get used to losing to good teams. BYU's recruiting restrictions won't allow it to compete on a national level and that is a fact. Bronco is squeezing out all he can out of a very sparse talent pool. Get used to losing BYU fans and enjoy the Friday night firesides.
to: Oh Boy | 11:43 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Atleast Utah fans don't have to wonder if their team's 5th priority is football. 3 of the priorities for BYU look good to me, but I am struggling with friends being ahead of football especially when you are receiving a scholarship to play. You too should be concerned.
@ oh boy | 11:44 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
I'm sure you didnt listen to this but after the BYU game in the post game interview with gary anderson, he said. The game plan against BYU was to stop the pass by dropping DE's and LB's. He expected to give up yardage on the ground and they were betting that BYU would not be patient enough to stick with the run. He was right.

That wont be the gameplan aginst Bama, they dont pass much. Utah can and will stop the run if that is their plan, look at AF game.
Reality Check | 11:48 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
I'm getting sick of all the remarks about pride. Neither Bronco, nor the players said anything that could be construed as prideful. Bronco said from the beginning that the quest for perfection was not about football and BCS bids, even before the TCU loss. Yeah, BYU players said they had targets on their backs, but that was true! After two undefeated conference seasons, you think people would put a target on SDSU, or how about CSU? No, they'd put the target on the cougs. TCU DID have a target on them, putting BYU logos on their tackling dummies. Yeah, players repeatedly said they *felt* they could compete with anyone, *IF* they played to their potential. With those two operative words, only an idiot would misconstrue that as prideful. That's confidence, maybe over-confidence, but a far cry from prideful. After every loss, and win, they repeatedly complimented every team, saying they competed well, and they were the first to point out their own mistakes. Looks like humility to me. You need to differentiate between the fans and the coaches/players. Yeah, fans are prideful, sometimes obnoxious, and just plain stupid, but to say the program is prideful is quite moronic.
HAHAHA | 11:45 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Happy holidays cougars! HAHAHAHA
knowwhat | 11:54 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Cougs could suceed if they would stop making recuits beg to play there and start recruiting people. I find it interesting that all the player from snow college have to beg to play at the Zoo and walk on, yet they are starters. Get a clue Zoo.
STATE RANKINGS ARE OUT | 11:56 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
1- UTAH
2- WEBER STATE
3- BYU
4- SNOW
5- DIXIE
6- SUU
7- UTAH STATE
Execution vs Talent | 11:56 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
I don't get all this talk about "execution" and how BYU may not have the talent but that the have execution. If I understand Broncos philosophy correctly, BYUs lack of being able to recruit top speed and talent nationally (Honor Code) is to be compensated with extreme execution. The 3 losses proves this makes absolutely no sense. Is not the ability to execute one of defining characteristics of talent? How can you execute with players that dont have talent?

The glass ceiling for BYU is the Honor Code. BYU has reached its pinnacle as long as the Honor Code remains in place for football players.
Fraud Alert | 11:54 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
There's a fraud alert out with BYU's picture on it. The Cougars have been generally unimpressive throughout the year, including in this 31-21 loss. Where's the big win or the statement moment that warranted the program being No. 17 entering this game? In four chances with teams now over .500, it went 1-3, with all of the losses coming by double digits. The defense has gotten routinely exposed, and QB Max Hall is much better on paper than he is on grass. Hall will keep putting up gaudy numbers in 2009, but his arm strength is questionable and he's disappeared in big games. Although the record may say 10-3, that doesn't mean BYU didn't underachieve in 2008.
re..Reality Check | 12:00 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Are you serious? (1)If the "Quest" was not just about football, why was it a slogan initiated by the football team while in preparation for the 2008 FOOTBALL season? You really are a Dick Harmon Cougar Club homer if you actually believer this wasn't about football. Yes, you can throw in other areas of life that they would like to be perfect in, but again this was a FOOTBALL team coming up with the "Quest" slogan. Didn't the "Quest For Perfection" shirts have a football or football helmet on them?
(2)Did you read PK's reports about the BYU football team chanting "BCS" as they broke every huddle during training camp? That's not being prideful right, I'm sure every team in the country chants "BCS" after ever snap, in CAMP!
(3)How about your savior Bronco saying last December that they didn't want to be back in Vegas next season. Either he meant they wanted to go to New Mexico, or they were so arrogant that the Vegas bowl just wasn't good enough for the 08 Cougs.
You my friend are so delusional I almost wonder if you in deed are the aformentioned Dick Harmon in disguise!
cougs overrated and Utes not? | 11:59 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
The Utes are so much better, BYU is overrated, TCU killed them, against superior opponents like us they got dominated. blah blah blah, yet all Poote fans sit here and criticize BYU for supposedly being arrogant, have you ever heard of the word hypocrite. Oh yeah, by the way, you barely beat the worst Michigan team in history, barely beat TCU because of their kicker, THEIR KICKER!, it's not like you beat them by 30 points, there kicker just crumbled under pressure cuz he is a freshman, and you beat OSU because of your kicker, again not by 30. So I am not sure why you think you are some Juggernaut that can't be stopped. That somehow Alabama needs to be quaking in their cleats to play you. I am sure the Sugar bowl won't come down to kickers. Get ready for a good ole fashion whoopin' Pootes!
Re;Reality Check | 12:12 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
The BYU players repeatedly made pridful remarks. BYU fans have also been extremly pridful of their team (most fans of any team are) and even violent and unrulely at certain sporting events. The Las Vegas bowl people said they have had problems with BYU fans getting out of control. Not to mention a violent outburst by a certain players wife at the MWC basketball tournament. Point is that BYU players and fans are just like all other players and fans, prideful, arrogant and out of line at times. Stop with the we're better than you because we're better people garbage. Oh did you watch the end of the BYU basketball game? I believe I spotted a BYU player dropping F bombs and refusing to shake the hands of the opposing team. I guess that is how you justify getting beat, making self righteous remarks about how you are better than others.
penal code? | 12:28 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Cougar Kid | 8:27 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
The good news: At least they can follow the honor code. Four years ago they couldn't even follow the penal code.

Bronco has been the coach for 4 full years now...you must be thinking about 5 years ago under Crowton...even so can you tell me who was convicted of any crime at that time? Arrests were made and witch hunts started by the prosecutor. Some ended up expelled from school others left on their own but I believe none were convicted. Did I like the element these few players brought to the team-no. I hope we never have recruits that end up in these situations in the future. Breaking the honor code, and putting a bad light on the university and everything else aside I feel for these young men and the opportunities that were lost for them because of the witch hunt that brought no convictions. Leaving the area/university was likely to happen because of the legal/media treatment they received. Unfortunately the only actions admitted to/proven through out the ordeal would have been accepted/ignored at many other institutions. Again I hope those young men received opportunites to grow/prove themselves elsewhere.
Fire Bronco | 12:32 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Fire Bronco!!! I thought I would start the "Fire Bronco" chant early before they start next season 0-3.
defensive changes ..HAH | 12:35 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Jan Jorgensen talks of some needed defensive changes. HAH- how about 11 new players to start with !!!!
Talent OR Honor Code | 12:43 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
You call it fans - what do you want more - TALENT OR HONOR CODE? You can't have both as this season made crystal clear. Bronco is a GREAT coach and any program would love to have him but not even the best of coaches can fully compensate for lack of talent and BYU DOES HAVE a LACK OF TALENT especially on defense. Can BYU fill the talent gap with the restrictions the new honor code requires? I doubt it. Honestly, I think the best BYU can do is try to compensate for speed with SIZE especially on the D-line and line backers and then goto the JC ranks and grab a whole pool of d-backs and hope for the best.
Over rated | 12:53 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
This 10-3 BYU team might be the most overrated BYU team in history.
Bronco Overrated
Assistants extremely overrated
Max Hall the most overrated quarterback in BYU history, who can't win a big game to save his life.
Offensive line vastly overrated with the worst offensive line coach in BYU history. This is with Dick Harmon being their biggest cheerleader for the last two years!!!
A D line that can't get pressure on the Quarterback and a secondary that is slow, slow, slow.
The beautiful wrapping that is the broncos execution is starting to come off. This team is not hungry anymore and they have been looking at their individual press clippings since the Qwest for low expectations started. The bad thing is Collie will now be going pro and there is little to look forward next year on D with the best linebacker graduating in Nixon.

re..Reality Check | 12:00 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
(1)If the "Quest" was not just about football, why was it a slogan initiated by the football team while in preparation for the 2008 FOOTBALL season?

Answer-IT WAS NOT-please read the BYU mission statement:

The mission of Brigham Young University--founded, supported, and guided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints--is to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life. That assistance should provide a period of intensive learning in a stimulating setting where a commitment to excellence is expected and the full realization of human potential is pursued.

Yes, you can throw in other areas of life that they would like to be perfect in, but again this was a FOOTBALL team coming up with the "Quest" slogan.

Answer-They did emphasis this important tennant found in the schools mission statement as a motivator.

Didn't the "Quest For Perfection" shirts have a football or football helmet on them?

Answer-Yes as the team was trying to emphasis this for team unity and a strive for excellence perspective it does make sense to have football related logos as well.

re..Reality Check | 12:00 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008

(2)Did you read PK's reports about the BYU football team chanting "BCS" as they broke every huddle during training camp? That's not being prideful right, I'm sure every team in the country chants "BCS" after ever snap, in CAMP!

Answer-No I didn't read that report, however, would you have preferred the team break their huddle with "10-3"?

Yelling "BCS" is not prideful, it is motivational. Lots of teams yell "Win"; "#1"; etc to motivate. It is a proclamation of a goal. Nothing wrong with shooting high. Missing can hurt a little like it does somewhat this year but years from now if we have maintained several years of consecutive 10+ winning seasons not many will be sad about 10-3 this year.
Reality Check??? | 1:09 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Hey, you throw out whatever you have to to make this season's disappointment easier to take. You seem to want to make your football team a group of college kids who just happen to play football for fun. Step into real life. This is a business, and unless you want to stop keeping score at your football games, wins is all that matters, no matter how many tennants these athletes worship and live by.

You're obviously so deeply distraught by this season that no matter what evidence is presented you will have a counterpoint that someone hundreds of years ago really set the table. Bottom line, your football coach, team, marketing department, distributed and published THEMSELVES propoganda claiming their goal for the 2008 FOOTBALL SEASON was a "Quest For Perfection." Manipulate it any way you'd like, but if you're correct shouldn't the slogan, shirts, interviews, comments, etc., have taken place at Bronco's and the various players local stake center, instead of the FOOTBALL field. Common sense puts the two together, try it.

Byu needs to change their schemes. Byu lost 3 games because they were too predictable. Either fire Anae or change the schemes

(3)How about your savior Bronco saying last December that they didn't want to be back in Vegas next season. Either he meant they wanted to go to New Mexico, or they were so arrogant that the Vegas bowl just wasn't good enough for the 08 Cougs.

Answer-Is stagnating something that is appealing to you? Did Utah want to return to the Poinsetta Bowl ('07), Armed Forces Bowl ('06), or the Emerald Bowl ('05)? You know the places you went for T-3rd ('07), T-3rd ('06), and T-4th ('05) in conference play. I'm pretty sure that the answer is no.

Again shoot high! The team didn't try to claim during the season that they are already in a BCS game or anything of that nature. Even over zealous fans didn't do as many haters claimed they did. However, during the season it was obvious based on the rankings that BYU did hold their destiny in their own hands on that one if they could just win out. Unfortunately they couldn't disquise their weaknesses against the better opponents and they could not overcome the better teams. This is life! But I'm happy with high goals.
Response | 1:20 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
"Accept Mediocrity" said at 8:16 am - "What I don't understand is how come the mighty Yewts don't beat us 8 out of 10 times?"

You're not far off. The Utes have won 5 of 7 against BYU, and are two plays away from 7 of 7.
geezer | 1:31 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
This will be my last football post. Why was this season dissappointing? I think it all began with "Quest for Perfection." Hopefully a douse of humility will prevent future slogans like that. Too much pressure and too high of expectations. Highlights for me= beating UCLA 59-0 and another win over a Pac 10 team. A good win over Air Force. Lowlights= our DB's and our conservative defense. Lopsided losses to TCU, Utah and Arizona. More is needed other than execution. Our defensive players didn't match up with athletic teams. Maybe next year.
SoCalTrueBlue | 1:36 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Has anyone forgotten that BYU beat Utah in 2 of the last 3 seasons? One season does not a great team make or break. Sure, BYU did not achieve its full potential this year, but 10-3 is solid while not stellar. They will be better next year based on who is returning. Bronco is an excellent coach who will continue to build a terrific program. Priorities for 2009: a stronger pass rush and a smarter, quicker secondary. I'm looking forward to seeing our Cougs humble arrogant Utah in 2009.
CTMac | 1:44 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Trying to be perfect is arrogant? I would dare say EVERY Ute player is trying to be perfect at his position (hopefully). Why are Utes so quick to spout "arrogance" at anything BYU does? Worry about yourselves.

The little man attitude is getting tiring.
UteRob | 1:46 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
You are too good to be beaten?! Are you serious BYU fan?
If your team so good then how could they allow themselves to get out-played, out-coached, and out-hustled?
Ridiculous.
Re: @oh boy | 1:51 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
The fact that you think Alabama's rushing game is just the same as Air Force's speaks volumes about your grasp of reality.
bjdoc425 | 1:59 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
what a great time to stop a destructive non-Christian sport at a Church University. It is high time we ban American Football and quit destroying the knees of our smaller sized High School Footballers, and at the same time quit enriching the orthopedists who are the only ones really profitting from this dangerous sport. Now is the time to drop the program, and enlighten our youth with the benefits of international football, called soccer in America.
And I do trust you will not call me an apostate, for speaking out for the safety of our youth.
10-3 Mediocre? | 2:18 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
If 10-3 is mediocre then sign my team up every year to be mediocre. Perhaps saying "10-3 didn't reach team or fan expectations" is more realistic. Or it "feels mediocre to finish 10-3 when you expected more".

Lets see who else has been mediocre over the last 3 years.

Teams (out of 120) with 10 win seasons
2006=22
2007=16
2008=15 so far with 13 more having a chance
All 3 years = only 6 teams

I'm sure the smurfs will respond.

Consistently in this list is a good/great program. Joining occaisionally shows good/great teams-not necessarily a good/great program.
Henry Drummond | 2:23 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
BYU will improve if they:

1) Schedule up. Playing weak opponents doesn't make you a great team. It just makes you think you're great.

2) Respect their opponents. Face it, BYU was not the better team in those losses. You can learn a lot from defeat but not if you dismiss your opponents as inferiors who just got lucky. Look at the tapes.

3) Drop the artificial motivation. The T-shirts, the Haka dance, the sanctimoniousness. Do your talking on the field like everybody else.
Realist Check, part 2 | 2:22 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
If you think that chanting BCS and saying that Vegas was not their desired destination is arrogant, then you are moronic, just as I stated earlier. Since when does saying "I want to do better" a prideful statement? Since when does having goals make you arrogant? BTW, look at Bronco's statements from before the season started, and you'll see this was never solely about football. You know what BSU's slogan this year was? "Taking Back the WAC." Yet no one called them arrogant, no one even flinched. Making goals is not prideful in the least. And until you show me specific statements from players saying "We are better than this team..." you have failed in your argument. I'd call BSU's slogan more prideful than BYU's, but BYU gets the criticism because they are a school where football doesn't mean the world, sp everyone else thinks they think themselves above the world. Yet concrete arrogance is no where to be found.
