Yewts- STOP making excuses for your pending loss. At least the Y goes into every game confidently. The game is 2 weeks away and you are already planning your explanation. . That is what 40 years of average football will to to you
Lorz B. | 8:53 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
The thing that bugs me the most is that I'm tired of caring more about the outcome of the game than the players. I have been a huge fan my whole life and sometimes I seriously wonder why. If BYU wants to win every Saturday, they need to play their guts out and play smart. Penalizing yourselves from a 3rd and 1 in to a 3rd and 19 in the last game of the season is INEXCUSIBLE. It's okay to be a Christian and compete hard. Those things are not at odds with each other. Come one coaches, do some coaching; address the turnovers, the penalties, the casual attitude. You're killing me.
Jedd | 9:02 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Bronco is a football coach and not their Bishop. Focus on football Bronco, let the Church leadership take care of the rest. You have wrecked this season making football into something it wasn't. Keep your priorities.

BYU fans disgusting... | 9:19 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Cay, calling Utes "Yewts" is disrespectful to the Ute tribe, the tribe to which our great state was named after. But I forgot, BYU fans don't get anything. Let's insult a whole Native American group because we lost another game. Typical disrespectful BYU fan. Way to represent BYU.

Go Utes!
5th place | 9:25 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
No, not your place in the conference (although could've fooled me last night)...but 5th on priority list...that aint gonna win you titles.
Tucson | 9:24 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I am home grown from Tucson and a U of A grad.

I just wanted to say congratulations to BYU for a good season. Their focus on priorities is commendable and should be embraced by other programs.

Make no mistake, the U of A knows they aren't a top 20 team. They were happy to get to any bowl game. 6 years ago they didn't win any PAC-10 games. This year, starting off with a loss in Albuquerque hurt. But, the U of A has shown dramatic improvement over the course of the year under the current coaching staff, for each of the past 5 years.

It was a great game despite the mistakes, and even though the officiating crew was from back East, the replay crew was from the MWC and appeared to be quite green taking 5 minutes to review a play. So, we got to see the same 4 commercials over and over.

Bronco will fix his team. So, hats off.

"So long, BYU. See you next year as a 4th place team in MWC --behind Utah, TCU and AFA."

Make that 5th place because I really think that Colo state will do better than the Y next year.
RE: CLASS? | 9:34 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
First, learn to spell. It's UTES. Your silly misspellings remind me of arguments I used to have with my friends back in third grade.

Secondly, it's not up to the fans whether or not our team goes into the game with confidence. I believe they will and they should. They have every reason to be confident. The Ute defense can keep them in the game with anyone and if they can put together some good drives they will beat alabama.

It's funny you talk about coming into your games with confidence. I also had confidence that BYU could play with Arizona. Look where that got me. You forgot the last half of what BYU does. They go into games with confidence and leave them in denial.

Give your opposition some credit for beating you and move on with your life. Don't take your sadness out on other teams by predicting losses for them. That's just pitiful...
Disappointed but proud | 9:39 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Although I am very disappointed by the loss to Arizona, I am still proud that I graduated from a school that has a football coach who gives his players valuable guidance by establishing proper priorities that will serve them well throughout their lives. We BYU fans should recognize that these are STUDENT-athletes, most of whom will not play their sport professionally. Most BYU fans are way too invested in how the football and basketball teams perform. Helping develop better people is more important than winning a bowl game every year. I think that Coach Mendenhall understands this. We should also.
Bear | 9:38 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Who knows if Utah beats Bama or not...but isn't it terrific to have the opportunity to be there, to have the chance to do well? Win or lose, just about every team in America would like the chance to play and win a BCS game...including BYU, one would assume. I was certainly disappointed in BYU not doing anything to help the MWC, as did Colorado State. Getting to a BCS game twice in 5 years is a feat that not even the majority of BCS conference teams can clain. Winning their bowl games in between those years is another service to the reputation of the MWC. While it pained me to hope for a BYU win, I knew it would be good for us all. I feel sorry for BYU fans...well at least a little sorry.
Woody | 9:40 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
It is time for BYU to realize they were beat by a better team - Arizona. They didn't give it away, it was not bad calls. Did Nixon get a fumble, no. Did Collie fumble, yes, but BYU got the ball. Arizona was faster, tougher, and better. That's the bottom line, BYU got beat by a better TEAM.
Not True Fans | 9:50 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
yes, that wasn't the best outcome for the Cougs, but the last three years have been pretty good, everyone stumbles now and then (the Utes losing to UNLV 27-0).

In the last three years, BYU has 2 MWC championships and the Utes have 1.

Every year is gonna be a dog fight. The Cougs will NOT win it every year, neither will the Utes.

But I will still cheer for the Cougs and will not throw Bronco under the bus.

Collie is a Stud, I hope he goes pro.
Hmmm | 9:47 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Really?? Can you show me the BCS berths to prove it?

Until then.....keep it on lock down

----------------------------------------
BCS berths are arbitrary (just ask BSU, KSU in 1999, Texas in 2003). BYU has 4 MWC championships, the same as Utah. CSU and TCU have done pretty well too. Just because you have bowl berths in an extremely flawed BCS system doesn't mean you are an elite program and dominate the conference. I'm not saying BYU or TCU are elite programs. Far from it. But show some humility. I congratulate the Utes for a great season. But keep perspective. You are a good team among equally competitive conference teams. It may vary from year to year. But you aren't nearly as dominant as BYU was in the WAC. Which is good for the conference. Get over yourself Utes! Go TCU!
Re:Not True Fans | 10:09 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Why do BYU fans always pick a window so it looks pretty.

In the Laast 6 years Utah has 3 MWC championships BYU has 2. In the last 1 year Utah has all the MWC championships, BYU has none.

In the last 7 years Utah has won 5 times BYU 2 times.

All your arbitrary numbers mean nothing. Pick the last one or the whole thing.. not some arbitrary window that makes your meaningless stat look good.

For example: Utah 10-3 in bowl games BYU 9-17-1.
Perspective | 10:12 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
One fact seems to be missing for the majority of these comments: BYU outgained both Utah and Arizona. Whatever the scoreboard may or may not say -- when the losing team outgains the winning team, it's certainly no "blowout" and the Cougs certainly aren't "kittens." I guess that was the most frustrating thing this year about the Cougars. This team, without question, had more talent than any team in the Mountain West on offense, and even overall (with the possible exception of TCU, whose defense was exceptional). What was missing were the factors you'd expect from a BYU team coached by Bronco: leadership, intangibles, maturity, intelligence, character, the ability to make the big plays at crucial times. Those were the exact qualities that led a solid, but not overly talented Utah team to an undefeated season. Hats off to the Utes this year. I'm surprised fans from either side claim so much superiority or inferiority in 2008. If they played 10 times, it might be 6-4 Utes or 5-5. Nothing like 2004 when it would've been 10-0 Utes or or the 96 or 84 Cougs when it would've been 10-0 Cougs.
No such thing | 10:35 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008

I would like to see Collie return, but he's NFL bound. He's the real deal.
Wiley Old School | 10:34 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Perspective,
You make some valid points but 48-24 is a blow-out no matter how you cut it. And I'd say a 10-game tournament this year would favor the Utes probably 9-1. BYU might get one, then Utah would adjust. BYU showed no ability to adjust all year.
Slur on "Utes" | 10:40 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I have never understood the viciousness that some of my fellow BYU fans display toward Utah fans. I consider "Yewts" to be nothing less than an ethnic slur worthy of the strongest denunciation. Do Utah fans give back as well as they receive? Of course they do. But most of us are under an obligation to be "saintly" whereas most of them are not. We embarrass and cheapen ourselves when we forget this.
Perspective | 11:06 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Wiley: Unfortunately, we won't ever be able to know about the results of a 10-game series. With the talent differential being this close though, it would be hard to imagine one team dominating the series 9-1 or 10-0. The coaching staffs aren't so vastly superior either to make that much of a difference. This group of Utah players did have the "it" factor ... and it wasn't superior talent. They just found a way to win - a great quality.

By the way, a "blow out" is when one team is vastly superior, and in one game, may not be indicative of the score. You can see it mainly in the line play and it shows up in yardage (double or triple the yardage, embarrasing holes, lines being blown back). That was far from the case in the BYU-Utah game. In fact, if there was a line that appeared to dominate, it was BYU's offensive line over Utah's defensive line where large holes and rushing yards were extensive. Not having seen Utah play much this year, I was surprised there was so much rushing daylight . If this is indicative of the Utes, Bama will be a handful.
BYU Losers | 11:18 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I am so sick and tired of BYU fans saying Utah is a few plays short of losing to TCU, BYU, and Oregon State. Bottom line Cougs they are wins, who cares if they were closes THEY ARE WINS 12-0 is 12-0 and even if Utah gets killed they made it for the 2nd time and all you have is a weak 1984 memory against a weak Michigan team that was 6-5 in the Holiday Bowl. No BCS, never will. If Bama kicks our tails, we will wish them well and look a great season, NO EXCUSES LIKE THE LOSER BYU FANS---

Re: BYU Losers | 11:30 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Shows some real hypocrisy there bro, when you say "I'm tired of hearing about a few plays short...wins are wins." Then you go to say BYU's win over Michigan is a "weak memory."? Hey, if we are using your logic, BYU went 12-0 in 1984, won all there games, and a win is a win, right?? No excuses from us for 1984. We are standing by our national championship, and no one can take it away from us!!

Utah has yet to win a national championship, and that bothers yewt fans to the core! And, yes, because we have the BCS, the yewts will never win a national championship, even going undefeated.

Next year, BYU actually could play for the national championship, because we got the strength of schedule to do it, with teams like Oklahoma & Florida State on our schedule.

Everyone knows Utah should have lost to TCU and Oregon State, but a win is a win, and a national championship is a national championship. Suck it up, take it like a man, and admit BYU was the only undefeated team in 1984, and won the national championship in college football! Go Cougars!
wow | 11:39 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008

Also, if you think after your showing in the glorious las vegas bowl this year that you will get into the national championship the next year... WOW
Vegas What? | 11:46 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU lost this game for 1 reason, we didnt care. The Cougz had been to the Vegas bowl one too many time. They obviously didnt try in this game and didnt want it. We deserved so much more this year. But, our charity decided to give one to our little brothers up north this year.
Aggie's Perspective | 11:48 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I can honestly say I am an unbiased Aggie fan. Partial to neither the Utes or the Cougars. I cheer for both when they play anyone outside of USU.

Both fans are so far overboard on their comments that I have to chime in. As a state we should have rivalry its what sports are about but the level of hatred on here is worse than anything I have seen and I have lived amongst two rivalries much more recognized than this (ASU and UofA-OSU and Mich)

I have to say as a LOWLY AGGIE that by far BYU fans are much more arrogant and rude before and after games with USU football. I find this ironic as I am a member of the LDS faith.

BYU fans comments are always the type that smack of we are better than everyone else, just watch us TALK.

I am obviously not saying UTE fans don't dish out over the top comments but Utah does certainly act more like they have been there before. BYU is by far more arrogant, rude and condescending than BYU. BYU fans make more of the personal digs.

Simply my opinion.

Re: Perspective | 11:51 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Dictionary definitions of "blowout"

From dictionary #1:

1. a. A sudden rupture or bursting, as of an automobile tire.
b. The hole made by such a rupture.
2. A sudden escape of a confined gas or liquid, as from a well.
3. A large party or other social affair.
4. A lopsided victory or thorough defeat.

I think that the BYU-Utah game on Nov 22 qualifies as a "blowout" under definitions 3 and 4.

A few of the definitions of "blowout" from dictionary #2:

1. An easy victory. [Yes.]
2. A sudden malfunction of a part or apparatus [Yes -- when applied to Max Hall.]
3. A lavish festivity. [I think so.]
To All Yewt Fans | 11:51 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Some Straight Talk:
First, Utah will lose to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl by more than 2 touchdowns.

Second, where are all the yewt bandwagoners? Utah still has not sold all their bowl tickets??!! If BYU went to a BCS bowl, the tickets would have been sold out in a day. Shows a lot about Utah fans, they are fairweathered, only support their team if its convenient, won't travel to watch them play, will hide when Utah is losing, and are not nearly as die hard as BYU fans! At least BYU fans show support, win or lose!

Third, Utah will not have more than 7 wins in the 2009 season. With Ludwig & Anderson taking off, and all your good offensive players graduating, the yewts will have a year similar to 2005, only they will lose to BYU, because BYU returns all their coaches and good offensive players, minus Michael Reed.

Fourth, kind of already hinted at this, but BYU will beat Utah in 2009. Mark my words, it will happen in Provo. BYU wins that game.

Roll Tide!!! And Go Cougars!
Final Cougar Comment | 11:58 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Here it is my last BYU comment of the season. My entire life I've listened to the BYU fans talk about tradition and football domination. But let me tell the Y fans about how prestigious their program really is. In the history of this school BYU has put together some great seasons against WAC (pre-mountain west) and MWC teams. But the true character of a football team shows when it comes bowl time. 9-17-1 The Cougars fail miserably! You can't make believers out of people when you can't win the big game. This isn't even an arguable point. The reality is BYU is good against teams that have losing records and bad against teams that have winning ones. Argue away cougars...

Question: Why hasn't you sold out your allotment to the Sugar Bowl?

Answer: (Insert excuse here yewt fans)
RE: Final Cougar Comment | 12:11 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Take a look at the quality of the bowl opponents BYU has played in the past. Utah boasts its 7 game bowl winning streak, against which teams though?? In the past 15 years, BYU has played Oklahoma, Kansas State (ranked top 10 at the time we beat them), undefeated Marshall, undefeated Tulane, Louisville (top 10), Cal, Oregon, UCLA, and Arizona.

Utah has played who? Navy, Pittsburgh(9-3 and in the BCS??), Tulsa (BYU already beat earlier that season).

Can we see a difference here??!! Talk to me when Utah beats a top 15 team in a bowl game. It hasn't happened yet!!! BYU beat Kansas State in 1996, the 2nd place team from the Big 12, and at the time they were a top 10 team. BYU finished that season 14-1, the most wins by a college football 1-A team ever.

So yewts, show me a strength of bowl schedule comparable to BYU's!! This year is the first year you have played a quality bowl opponent. Navy, Tulsa, and a 9-3 Pittsburgh team do not count as quality bowl opponents!!!

I want to know why! | 12:29 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Why couldn't we beat a not so great Arizona team? I flat out do not understand how we could lose. Poor preparation and game planning? Lack of individual motivation? Inadequate overall team execution? This is just so frustrating. I don't know why we (and it is just as much us as them) have to bring Utah into this discussion -- this was Arizona (the FIFTH place team in the weak PAC-10) that beat us when we were the ones with a better resume and prior bowl experience. I would really like to hear some in depth analysis of BYU's preparation and performance from those with significant coaching and/or playing experience. I don't buy the simplistic "slow secondary" explanations as being sufficient to account for this loss. This game cries out for an extensive postmortem examination.

By canceling intercollegiate sports at BYU.

Look at all the anger in these posts. It doesn't have to be that way. If the Church canceled BYU football and basketball and all the rest all this bile would go away.

All the LDS athletes that currently go to BYU would find other places to play. Fans would find new teams to cheer for. Mormons would dial down the vitriol. And no-Mormons in Utah would, too. Coaches would coach somewhere else. And BYU, its students and faculty, could concentrate more on academics. 'The Glory of God is Intelligence,' not football or basketball.

Ricks college made the change and did just fine.
Pending loss? | 1:15 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
As a ute fan in alabama, I do not expect the utes to lose this game in alabama. I've seen the TIDE play, they can play, but if the Utes play the way they did against BYU, not many teams will be able to stop them.

So for the record, I honestly think that Utah will win the Sugar Bowl, capping a perfect season, and representing the MWC well.
BYU Fans Just Don't Get It... | 1:28 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
"Sounds like a Yewt. by the way, Yewtie, after losing to Alabama you WILL NOT be undefeated. Understand????"

Again still talking smack?!? Yes everyone already knows 12-1 means no more undefeated; they just taught you that at BYU?

It seems BYU still doesn't understand that 3 good teams beat them this year they did NOT beat themselves: 48-24 and 32-7 are beat downs not close games no matter how you try to spin it.

Utes also understand that:
BCS Sugar Bowl
48-24
12-1 (Possibly 13-0)
Millions given to BYU as charity for playing in the MWC.

Now that looks more like a "Quest for Perfection".

------------------------------------------------------
ha ha ha... scoreboard doesn't matter? With your logic I guess BYU did achieve their "Quest for Perfection".

48-24 and 32-7 are blowouts no matter how you look at it. It doesn't matter how many times BYU's offense ran up and down the field what matters is the score.

i agree that using the term "yewt" is offensive. my fellow cougs should stop using it. however, even more offensive is using a native american tribe as a mascot. in general you will find that most mascots are animals or something totally mythical in nature. native americans are real people.

you can say it is out of respect for the tribe but that doesn't fly either. you asked one leader who represents only a fraction of one tribe, who turns out to be only one tribe of an entire native american population. in return his son gets free tuition to the university. give me a break.

this topic runs deep into the history of our nation and its treatment of indigenous peoples. you can't just blow it off. take a step back and ask yourself if you truly understand the perspective of a native american? then ask yourself what have you ever done for a native american? exactly.

please change your mascot.

Where's the D? Bronco and Hill have to look at this years team and realize the main weakness was our defense. Arizona won because they are more athletic. Execution wasn't the only answer. This years D looked like a typical old WAC defense. Everyone would know the other team would score lots of points but usually BYU would outscore them. It doesn't work anymore. There are too many good defensive teams in the MWC alone. I never thought I'd see A Bronco led team play such pathetic defense, but that's what happened this year.

Bronco did mention that this year's team had not been as focused/prepared as last years, it clearly showed in the last six games. Bronco also mentioned he expected his new players to step-up and perform - not quite!! The season wasn't a total lost, ten wins is ten wins. However, I would give this team an "average rating." There were some individual players that were exceptional. I hope Max Hall places better next year against stiffer competition. I happen to live in Big 12 country, Max reminds me of Chase Daniels, good quaterback but can't win the big games.I am sure Bronco is aware what needs to be fixed. I'm not sure the MWC will win its next three bowl games. Boise State's QB is pretty good, Utes will see a heavy dose of RB Coffee and AFA will be trying to stop that Houseton spread!! Good luck MWC, we're gonna need it!!

I teach school near a Ute reservation, and my district has many Ute students. We do feel it is very disrespectful to alter the name of this tribe. I know you think you are being "cute" and "funny", but try being Christlike for once and practice what you preach in your religion. You would all get offended if people altered the name of your church.
