Win or lose they "went undefeated"????

Sounds like a Yewt. by the way, Yewtie, after losing to Alabama you WILL NOT be undefeated. Understand????

I am so glad even the clown announcers are aware that Collie considers himself a great football player .

IF we lose then we won't be undefeated but at least it's a loss to a team that was number one for most of the season, to a team that has an almost perfect record this year, to a team that gets to play in something better then the toilet bowl, in a game that matters, in a game that more then 100,000 people will watch, to a team that actually deserves a bowl game, to a team that's actually good in their conference. But hey kitten fan, at least you beat one team with a winning record this year. Two if you count the blue and white game ;)
Go back BYU | 12:06 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Go back to the WAC the mountain west doesn't need your poor bowl record. Just do everyone a favor and trade BYU for Boise.

I am so sick of BYU embarrassing us every YEAR!
Anonymous | 12:10 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Doesn't matter. It was still a better season than BYU had. That was my point. You BYU fans try to justify however you can, we're still the best 10-3 team in the nation, we didn't lose, we beat ourselves, blah, blah, blah. Utah still had the better season and you can't understand that. Utah went 12-0, beat TCU, beat BYU and got to the BCS bowl. BYU didn't. You BYU fans don't seem to get it. You always think you had the better season no matter how much better Utah did. Get off your high horse and accept your three losses.

And by the way, calling Utes "Yewts" is disrespectful to the Ute tribe, the tribe to which our state was named after. But I forgot, BYU fans don't get anything. Let's insult a whole Native American group because we lost another game. Typical disrespectful BYU fan. Way to represent BYU.
At least | 12:09 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
If the Utes lose they lose to a ALABAMA TEAM. Do you see the difference? ALABAMA NOT ARIZONA. YOU LOST TO ARIZONA! 5 LOSSES in the crappy PAC 10!

At least they had the 2nd best MWC team play Boise, BYU would have lost bad.

How about that though, rough night for cats in Vegas.
Still think? | 12:14 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU fans still think that Max Hall should be Offensive Player of the Year?

3 losses, that has to hurt. Come on, you guys had a "quest" and you didn't even do as good as last year!
Anonymous | 12:17 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Better luck next year; 10-3 isn't that bad, just 3 embarrassing losses.
Anonymous | 12:21 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I think they meant, win or lose, Utah still had an undefeated regular season. Something that BYU could not accomplish. And with that undefeated season, Utah got the a BCS bowl, when BYU did not. So win or lose the bowl game, Utah's regular season was superior to BYU's regular season. Figure it out.
So interesting... | 12:23 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
to hear all of the talk about how awesome Utah is and how bad BYU is and how bad they represented the conference. Utah fans state in these comments how pompous BYU and their fans are but isnt it funny that more than half of the posters on this board are Utah fans trash talking all of the above points, and the article is about the BYU/AZ game..... You are doing exactly what you are claiming BYU and its fan base does. Funny how that works out, isnt it? Gotta love good sportsmanship. Nothing better than a BYU loss to bring the finger pointing Ute fans out and about.
Do your job! | 12:25 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Max Hall has a lot of maturing to do. He is too constrained by a narrow view of the field. He looks directly at his #1 receiver, then looks briefly at #2, then runs up the middle. He has no versatility and follows his "formula" blindly. He is so predictable. He is fortunate he didn't get picked off another THREE TIMES by Arizona!

Hall lost this game... again, just as he did the Utah game!

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the QB position, Max!

Now, about coaching. Bronco's "spiritual" priority for this team shows. He is more concerned with giving warm fuzzy firesides than he is in putting a well-prepared FOOTBALL team on the field! I got news for you, Bronco: BYU pays religion teachers to teach the boys religion! You are paid to teach FOOTBALL! Quit wasting your time trying to do someone else's job! Do YOUR job! FOOTBALL is your job, NOT religious education! We don't want a bunch of seminary teachers on the field. We want FOOTBALL PLAYERS!

Maybe the schools in Utah should not play each other. I would like to see some civility between UTah and BYU and maybe not playing each other for awhile would bring that miracle about!!

So tired of the nasty comments from both schools toward each other. Deseret News needs to require people to register for their postings so that those who post have to "OWN" their comments.

Hey! Accept mediocrity | 12:25 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I'll live and die with BYU, no need to cheer for ANYONE else! Look forward to next year.

Go Cougars!

CO Coug | 12:30 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Very poor showing from the Cougars, I just don't understand it, players were mostly standing around with their hands on their hips all night. Not a lot of excitement or emotion from kids playing in a big game, I just don't get it. Collie was about the only one who seemed to show up and want to play.

I think that reality is setting in for BYU, with such strict standards on campus, it's just too difficult to compete on the recruiting stage with other schools. The lack of speed and athletes on both sides of the ball have been glaring in their three losses.

I think that Bronco has done an admirable job with the challenges he has, but I do feel that he needs to figure out a way to get his kids more fired up to play and quit making so many costly turnovers and penalties.

Cougars I love ya, but last night was a big dose of reality for many fans like myself. good luck to the Utes, the MWC needs better representation than the Cougars this year.
MWC or PAC-10? | 12:49 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
The only team ABOVE .500 the MWC beat was against Oregon State in SLC. And this is the Mountain West Conference's best year ever...?
12 Pack | 12:47 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Now that BYU has lost, it's time for all you BYU fans to start spewing how Utah has no chance against Alabama. That's typical! BYU is soooooo Over rated. Can't beat a mid level Pac 10 team. How Pathetic. BYU peaked when it beat UCLA!

Never showed up... | 10:13 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Max Hall showed up again, NOT! He never showed up for a big game all year.

Did Jorgenson play? Just wondering, I never heard his name. Is'nt he the conference all time sack leader?
====================================================

I was at the game and I could see why none of the D-line was heard from much. They rushed 3 against a good, big O-line the entire game. The front 3 couldn't generate much pressure, but when you are playing 3 against 5 or 6, generating pressure is out of the equation. Reminds me of the U-BYU game where Utah only rushed 3-4 on most plays. They did not generate as much pressure as usual. Difference was Utah had to DB's to play prolonged seconds in coverage. AZ's QB shred the secondary even with guys in coverage. If that's happening bring 6-7 guys and make the QB look down at the pressure and away from the coverage every now and then.

Go Utes!
Amused | 12:55 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU should change their mascot to the Possums because they roll over and play dead in big games: TCU, Utah and now Arizona!!
What?!? | 12:58 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
The comments on this board are the reason I can never root for Utah, even if it is for the good of the conference. If the Utes were playing against a team coached by Satan, I would root for Satan...

To any Utah fan I made fun of for having the kicker be the best player on the team. I'm sorry, BYU could have used The King
++==================================================

To understand how much we revere King Louie, you need to have watched(and agonized over) how many games we lost on field goal and XPoint kicks in the McBride era...Think Kaneshiro(and for more than just doinking the 37 yarder against BYU in 1998) He lost at least 5 games in 2 years that I can recall.

You too will revere your next clutch kicker because of your memory of this game alone.
Edmond | 12:59 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
The players were still mesmerized by the fireside from the night before; they obviously didnt have their head in the game. The team could have used a little more prep time for the game; not a dang fireside. What is going on in Provo? Today I am ashamed of this team!
About to give up | 1:10 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
For years I have been a BYU fan, but I'm about to give up. All these years I thought I was cheering for a football team. A team that practiced and played to win, but the TV broadcast was a real revelation to me. BYU does not have a football team, it has a traveling fireside club. They receive a scholarship to put on uniforms, do some tribal pregame dance and then participate in 60 minutes of "let's pretend we are a football team." I think we whould all adopt the BYU priorities. I'll put fun and friends above work. Only question, whose going to pay my bills?
Go UTES | 1:27 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Will this game be shown on BYU Football Classic TV right after The Lawrence Welk Show? The BYU school flag should be flown at half mast because this team is dead on the field. Your over inflated egos have been shot down. What is the deal with a school putting family 1st? The purpose of attending college is to obtain higher education not to give Utah County the highest birthrate in the nation.
WHAT DOES HE MEAN? | 1:31 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
What does Bronco mean by saying: "We didn't play championship football tonight" ???

I didn't know BYU was playing for a championship...

Is a fourth-rate Bowl game now considered a championship?

If BYU had won would they somehow win the MWC Championship???

I am a BYU fan, but...sorry Bronco, you were not playing for any championship whatsoever. Lets cool it with the cliches and axioms.

"The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville Nine that day;
The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play,
And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game

(sound familiar?)

They thought, "If only Casey, mighty Casey, could but get a whack,

We'd put up even money now, with Casey at the Bat."

* * * * * * *

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright,

The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,

And somewhere men are laughing and little children shout,

But there is no joy in Mudville - mighty Casey has struck out."

(sound familiar?)

Mudville, Utah zip 84601.

Questions - Fewer practices? After more than a month off since last game? After a resounding beating at the hands of the Utes? No wonder Max and Austin have to practice at night!

Sounds like Gary Crowton flying the overconfident Cougars to Reno the MORNING of the game!

Please Boise, join the MWC! Give me well-coached over-achievers any day over the underachievers in Mudville.

These comments make me laugh. Watching byu fans writhe in pain after seeing the arrogance isn't one bit sad...it's actually funny. I feel no animosity toward byu and their fans right now. It's funny how easy it is to not care when your rivals fails to achieve any of its year long goals: BCS, beat rival, win conference, win bowl game. 10 wins isn't bad though.
Jarid in Cedar | 1:58 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Our seats were 12th row directly behind BYU's bench, and the biggest surprise was that the players appeared dead, almost zombie like. The only real emotion I saw was one of BYU's coaches get in the face of #20 when he dropped that punt, Reed jawing and complaining as he came off the field after the interception, and lastly many of the players when they recovered the onside kick.

The whole group...coaches, players, even the fans...did not have any intensity or emotion...especially compared to UA.

I'vee seen alot of talk about the lack of speed, the recruiting handicaps, play calling etc...but the big problem I saw was a lack of emotion. They didn't show much fight, and emotion and fight matter in football. Even under sized, under talented, players can play with a fire and accomplish more than their physical stature or skills suggest they can. I cannot recall the last time I saw BYU "overacheive" in a game since they beat Miami in 1989. Can anyone else recall another game where they were underdogs and they came away with a victory?

Go Utes!!
Ocean's 13 | 2:26 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Reminds me of the end of Ocean's 13...Benedict represents byu fans while Danny represents Ute fans:

Benedict: "You think this is funny?"
Danny: "Well Terry, it sure as $*#& aint sad."

Rough day for cougars...it sure aint sad.
Real | 2:42 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I'm a BYU fan and will be next year too.

But I'm also man enough to say that BYU was disappointing and embarassing in their losses and especially in their bowl game. They better man up and take responsibility for the let down so that next year is better.

MiP | 3:02 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
There are fans that are arrogant at every school, not just BYU.

For us Ute fans, the BYU loss is not good. If the MWC is trying to establish that they are the best of the non-BCS conferences they need to beat up on teams like Arizona---good, but beatable BCS teams.

Now, it is up to Utah who will be a big underdog and TCU who must win to silence BSU fans who think the WAC can hang with the MWC.

Tough loss.

And the play of the game? The INT in the endzone. A BYU score would have cut it to three with tons of time left. Instead, Zona got it back marched down the field, milked the clock and scored to go up by 17....
Drove me crazy | 3:09 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Not even going to comment on the game except to say that the announcer drove me crazy as he continually said Harvey Unga's name as Una. Does he know something that local announcers and sportscasters don't?
HAHAHAHA | 3:16 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Way to represent Cougars!!! Nice game. You know, just once it would be nice to hear the TDS say something like, "we just got beat by a better team." It's always, "we beat ourselves," "we didn't execute" or something like that. VERY RARELY do you hear the TDS give rightful credit to their opponent who just BEAT them. Nice going Zoobs!
Lavell | 3:21 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Well well, the BYU of old returns. Build up the year and then choke in the bowl.

Way to go, keep giving the MWC the mid-major title.

And for the BSU fans, speak all you want about the MWC, but the big problem you have is having a school that can support other sports. Maybe someday the MWC, but never the Pac-10. Really, you are a Big Sky team with a good football program. 30K stadium doesn't cut it either.

Someone say Lavell | 3:24 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Anyone notice Lavell's character in the game?? Didn't look like he was all there. I'm not trying to make an insult, but as someone outside the state and not up on news, Lavell looked like he might be experiencing something (without me stating a condition).

Dan in Iowa | 3:31 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
To Coach Mendenhall, his staff and players, I would like to congratulate all of you for another successful season. And I believe that the vast majority of BYU's fans would join me in congratulating you.

Naturally, we would have liked to have seen you win every game, score on every play, shut out every opponent, etc., but realize that in the realm of Div. 1 football, that is unrealistic. That being said, you were successful in most of what you attempted on the field this year even when it did not result it a win.

We like the fact that you have brought BYU football back to it's winning ways while maintaining a clean program that we are all proud of.

We like football a great deal, but realize that in the grand scheme of things, there are far more important things to be concerned with.

We like the fact that the football program does more than play football, but reaches out to help others in so many ways, including spiritually, while the players are given more opportunities to lead and develop.

Thank you for the memories, both the good and the not-so-good. We're proud of all of you!
BYU next year. | 3:28 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
How is next year going to be better when BYU is replacing Northern Iowa with ASU, Replacing Washington with FSU and replacing UCLA with Oklahoma.

And there is still TCU, Air Force and Utah on the schedule.

I think BYU is going to be lucky to pull out an 8-4 season.

Hey, Anonymous,I know that types like you who ignore these little things called "facts" and "reality" find it hard to believe, but a Cougar receier named Austin Collie LEADS THE NATION for receiving yards with 1,538. And, bub, that's 225 yards more than the 2nd place receiver. 225 yards. More.

Which means that pretty much everybody but you knows Austin Collie IS a great player.

You've earned it so here's your sign.

You're welcome....

Coach Bronco just announced that BYU really won the game.

Quote "Well, you take out all the bad plays and myself, then the score was really 6-0 - our two field goals won the game". "Just like the Utah game that we won, we had a great 12-1 year -oh and yeah give me a minute, I think we won the TCU game too".

I don't live in Utah and I just returned home from church. Can someone please tell me what BYU's priorities are. I've seen posts that say football is priority #5. What is that about? What are the other priorities? Who is driving these priorities? Is it for real? etc., etc.

Can someone provide some information? Thanks.

Utah fans (not all of them, but the idiots posting all the trash) are kinda like school in the summer ... no class!! By the way, I don't read or comment on Utah stories. To all the classless, pathetic Utah posters -- Karma.
Money Saver! | 3:59 p.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Hey, next year, Las Vegas won't have to have two teams for the bowl game. All they need is BYU to come and "beat themselves." Seems pretty irrational, all this beat ourselves, not execute or we would have won talk.
