"have a good time, Utes.
you have an appointment at the slaughterhouse."

Still talking smack after a 7-5 team crushes your Quest for Perfection season? Lets face it this UofA team was better then the 84 6-5 MI team.

Did anyone see that unbelievable Max Hall play on 3rd and Goal on the 8 yard line in the 4th Quarter? Man that was the sweetest play in Vegas Bowl history

Max drops back eying Collie into the end zone with UofA blitzing from both sides but BYU easily picking it up

I remember this so vividly, I was sitting in the end zone 48th row up wearing my Crimson Red t-shirt busy eating my nachos when

Max hit me right in the chest.

I caught the ball but I had to drop my nachos. Nevertheless, Max owes me $7.24. If he doesnt pay up then the UofU has promised me that they will take the $7.24 out of BYUs Sugar Bowl cut.

Sugar is so SWEEEEEETTTTT!

GO UTES!!!

for the first time this year!! We got to stop hating each other. That said, the game looked a lot like the one against Utes. No running game when you can run, and Hall throwing too much risky passes. Defense did not adjust the entire game. It looks like coaching problem.

I wish you would won the game. I bet a of Utes cheered for you to win.

"Arizona really didn't stop our offense today," said wide receiver Michael Reed. "We stopped ourselves."

Yes of course against good defenses (TCU, Utah, UofA) you stopped yourselves but against bad teams you were great.

BYU what an embarrassment for the MWC. We should swap BSU for BYU.

If byu's football program suddenly died I would dance joyously on its grave. The cougars were an embarrassment to our conference last night. I doubt byu will EVER have to worry about getting "slaughtered" by an Alabama team or any other BCS bowl team because byu will simply never be good enough to go to a BCS bowl game. But you still have 1984, right?

BCS RUNNING SCOREBOARD

UTAH -2

Overrated | 9:08 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU definitely was overrated going into this game, but it didn't look like Arizona was as bad as everyone thought they would be. That's an up and coming program who will be a force to be dealt with in the PAC 10 next year. But look at it this way, next year as fans we don't have to get all pumped about some team who's supposed to bust the BCS. We have a team who will have something to prove every week.
Sweet | 9:08 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
The only thing I like better than a Utes victory is a BYU loss, and two losses administered in one day by AZ,sweet, better than eating ice cream and next year The Utes may shut out the Y. I can't wait. Go Utes. Beat "sweet home Alabama."
Skip H | 9:11 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Bahahahahahahahaha! The Y's 'Quest for Dejection' ended perfectly. THe most overrated team in the nation got munched by a mediocre-at-best Arizona team. So much for the MWC trumping Pac-10 teams all year. Nice job Bronco.
Way to have your team represent our conference so well. Hopefully the Utes don't lay an egg in the Sugar Bowl.
U,Y,&USU Fan | 9:15 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Yesterday Collie said BYU didn't lose a game all year.
He said they are better than the teams that beat them but the just beat themselves. When a team believes they lose games and are still better than the winner they can't improve. Or more precise they refuse to improve.
The simple fact is THE BEST TEAM WINS EVERY GAME. To win have to be the best, not just assume you're the best.
montanacutter2 | 9:19 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU had one of the largest O lines in the country, and can they protect or run block-NO!! Max Hall has to know his needs to improve on his selection of who he throws the ball to. And when he runs with the ball PROTECT IT!!

BYU is and will be a sub-par team. They can not compete with the teams that have a winning record. Lucky they had AZ and not Boise State. The score would have been a lot worse.
The Winners | 9:32 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Collie said that they are better than the teams that they lost to? I guess time just ran out and they would eventually score more points against Arizona... if say... they had another quarter to do it. The only thing that would have happened is Max Hall would have thrown maybe one or two more picks and fumbled a couple more times.

Look at the scoreboards. The Utes beat you, the Horned Frogs beat you and the Cats beat you. If not for a big play at the end, Arizona beats Oregon State, so the argument that Utah could easily beat the Cats is flawed.

Here's another scoreboard that counts: 12 wins, 9 losses, 1 tie against BYU. Cats > Cougs.

Re: Fred | 9:57 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
There is only one problem with that Fred.. BYU may have scored more points than USC did against Arizona.. USC beat Arizona and you don't really want to talk about what USC would do to BYU do you...Can you just accept the fact that BYU can't beat a team with a winning record.
BYU Fans Dont Worry! | 10:02 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Another year is coming. Youll beat some mediocre MWC team early in the season and be ranked in the top 25 again in no time at all. The quest for perfection will continue! Magic will happen! Dont be discouraged. Youll be kidding yourselves about your greatness again in no time. Time to buy more blue paint and #1 fingers to hold in the air.

I think if nothing else, this discredits the BYU policy of the last four years of scheduling down (or having "balance" as Bronco and Tom Holmoe like to call it). You have talent, but it isn't going to develop when all you schedule are the safe teams like Washington that you are sure to beat. (After all everyone else did. They went 0-12)

Get some real competition in the non league schedule and your team will rise to occasion. If not, prepare for more embarrassing losses.
way to make the MWC look bad | 10:20 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU you didnt just let down your fans you let down the whole MWC. I mean New Mexico beat this team 36-28. Your giving all the nay sayers fuel to dismiss our confrence.

I remember last year all cougs fans were thankful they didnt hire coach wit. I bet you wish you had him now, a coach that knows how to make adjustments to beat a poor pac 10 team. Bronco is to stubborn and set in his ways to make the adjustements nescasary to win. I mean blitz a little put some pressure on their qb.

On the bright side Coug fans atleast The Great Gazoo with his enormous noggan didn't throw 5 interceptions again.
AZ | 10:24 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
WOW!! I hear some pretty good excuses from BYU fans about how and why BYU lost the game...nobody and I mean nobody, outside of Utah thinks that BYU is a powerhouse!!! BYU fans live in a dreamworld thinking that BYU belongs in a BCS game! Utah is a better team and they are going to get spanked by Alabama!
Weak Program | 10:25 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Talk about weak. BYU fits the definition of WEAK and SLOW too. It was painful to watch this team regress as the season progressed. Hopefully, Bronco will get a clue that SPEED is very relevant and necessary for winning games. Every team that could out run the cougars whipped their butts. What a pathetic showing against Arizona.

NevadaUTE | 10:32 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Ah, Uncle Rico, we knew somebody would bring up the Cougar team of 24 years ago, before most posters here were even born. Utah DID win the national championship in 2004 (according to 1984 BYU standards). BYU was lucky there was no BCS 24 years ago or there's no way they would have a championship. And, yes, Utah has our 1930s championship in basketball! How many does BYU have? Not to mention several RECENT championships in skiing and gymnastics. But I do hear BYU has a smash up ball room dance team!
Try something else | 10:36 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
It's time to give another QB a try! Max is not as good as many thought he might be... Need to take care of the ball better. BYU football live and die with their QB. Max is not the man!

Defense play decent for what they have to work with. If only offense didn't give defense a short field to defend?!

The Arizona game was beatable. Too bad BYU didn't get it done. Better luck next year!
Realistic Cougar | 10:36 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Somehow expectations for BYU are always sky high. I guess it is a combination of a national championship, several top 25 rankings, dozens of conference championships, and a handful of victories over ranked teams.

BUT - if you really look back over history, BYU rarely does well against really quality opponents. Sure they tend to beat the teams they are supposed to beat but rarely do they beat the teams that are considered as good or better than them. 1-20 against top 25 really says it all folks. We can beat poor to average bcs teams (like UCLA and Washington this season) but when we go up against someone in the top half of that conference - well, we all saw it last night.

And here is the tough part - with our recruiting strategy of 98% mission-bound eagle scouts, we will continue to have great kids but will not likely improve on that record against top-25 opponents. We are who we are and should be proud of what we do accomplish. But BYU's program simply is not built to be a bcs caliber program. Cograts Cougs on a 10-3 season. I hope the Utes and Frogs represent well!
Humble Pie | 10:43 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
The problem with the Y is the coaching staff. Most coaches don't tell their team about how great they are, they tell the team about how great the other team is. And that their team had better be bringing it every game.

GO UTES!!!
Ute Alum | 10:51 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
When I first turned the game on and saw the size of the BYU guys, I thought wow those boys are huge but as I have seen many time from my summer house porch little fast birds can really chase and attack the big birds chasing them away.
As a UTE fan I thought that was just a terrible game and while I don't blame the refs for the loss I thought they were very unprofessional at their jobs, AZ played poorly but BYU was worse. Collie is a great player and he did play well, the pro scouts should snapped this boy right up. Hall will turn pro so that he doesn't have to face another humiliating game, he has talent but he is so arrogant he will become the next Ryan Leaf when he is drafted by D. Lions
Dave | 10:48 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU loses even if they win. But they lost because they are losers. Go Utah!
Oregonian | 10:52 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Hey BYU Fan... good seasone. 10 wins is nothing to hang your head about. AZ is a good team. They have been for the last couple of years, it's just that they are streaky. They only lost to USC by a touchdown. True, the cougs could have beat them if they hadn't committed so many costly penalties. Good season though... represented the church well.

(PS. Go Beavers)
BYU is so overated | 10:50 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Why is Bronco and BYU talking so much about how good they are? So Overated! BYU couldn't beat any real opponent all season, stop talking about how you deserve National attention. The fact that your ranked is ridiculous and you make the Mountain West look bad.
Anonymous | 11:00 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Firesides are good; we clearly saw how far down the priority list football is. Max and Austin--don't even think of going pro this year. You and the rest of the team need some time to regroup, rethink, rebuild.
Accept mediocrity | 11:13 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Unfortunately, the mission of BYU is not to win football games. Unlike Utah or other programs in the state, BYU, as dictated by the church, has an "eternal" purpose, unlike anywhere else.

That isn't Bronco's fault, but he has to live with it. He is a quality guy and given the severe restrictions BYU faces when it comes to recruiting quality athletes, Bronco has done an admirable job.

I personally would like to see the football program go away. However, that isn't going to happen. So the only option available is to learn to accept mediocrity, particularly on a national level, because BYU will never be able to compete with the type of athletes it is able to recruit.

BYU is getting to the point now that they cannot even get the few quality LDS players out there to come to BYU.

Because of BYU's situation, the playing field will never be level (BYU's choice) so they will NEVER compete with the big boys.

The last 30 years or more have been fun, but don't expect them to continue.

BYU fans, accept it or find a new team to cheer for - as long as it isn't the Utes!
Tarheel Ute | 11:14 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
No need to rub salt in BYUs wound. No one can be happy with BYUs performance last night. But a little expectations management is in order.

BYU will probably not ever, not ever; return to the dominance it once held over the MWC/WAC. BYU, like Notre Dame and AFA are ignoring the realities of todays sport, in order to maintain their high minded and idealistic version of college athletics. However, talent and athleticism are the names of the game certainly in football and basketball. Great coaching can no longer be counted on, particularly for non-BSC conference teams.

Utah and TCUs advantage is they are not constrained by BYUs or AFAs recruiting and campus limitations. BYU and AFA can be appreciated for developing strong leaders, but not necessarily for winning championships.

This may have been BYUs watershed year. BYU is a team made up of hard-working, intelligent, coachable players those that go on to greatness in life; however this BYUs old-school thinking will not return BYU to dominance or champions.

BYUs loss last night is more of what their fans can expect of their football future, not the exception. Unfortunately.

Ugg: a season with an 0-3 record against opponents that were a measuring stick for BYU. They didn't deserve to be in the top 20 - period. Good but not great, meltdown when it mattered. I hope for better results next year.
Desnews pictures | 11:27 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I just looked through the pictures of the game. Bryce Mahuika # 2 - wow he looks really scary during the 'haka'. Too bad BYU doesn't spend more time being scary during the game! Guys give up the 'haka' - it isn't high school anymore....

Nice representation of the conference.
Mike | 11:32 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
The thing that really drives me crazy about this brand of Cougars is a tendency to refuse to give credit to their opponents. In all three losses, there have been quotes by Cougar players and coaches to the effect that "They didn't beat us, we beat ourselves." It's getting old. Just recognize that you were beat by three better teams this year. On the bright side, there were ten other teams who you were better than.

Once again they won't accept that they got beat. They beat themselves is an insult to every team that pounded them this year.

Utah will have a tough game. But win or lose, they went undefeated and got to a second BCS bowl when BYU did not. You BYU fans can talk all you want to try to justify your less than perfect season, but it's not helping to continually bring Utah into the talk because there isn't any comparisons to be made.
