Max Hall will return for another season......
I love BYU but | 12:42 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
if Collie, Pitta and Jorgensen are smart they will abandon this sinking ship for the NFL as soon as they can.
Fire Crowton! I'm mean, Bronco! | 12:43 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
It's time to find somebody that knows how to WIN! This is ridiculous, we lost to an unranked 7-5 team that just barely qualified for a bowl game.

Good grief!

We need people from the Edwards era. Why didn't we get Sarkisian?

Next year is going to be horrible. TCU, Utah and Arizona all exposed us. So much for feeling good after Northern Iowa, Wyoming and UCLA. I feel awful. We're better than that.

I'm sure the Utes are going to be all over this board, and we don't have a word to say.

TDS is Team Down South | 12:52 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Urban Meyer followed Woody Hayes philosophy of not even showing his rival the respect of mentioning their names, so he referred to BYU as the Team Down South. Mike Sanford now refers to Reno as the Team Up North, but it doesn't hold the same power as it did when Urban was referring to the BYU team that he owned for two years since Sanford is 0-4 against UNR.

Jorgensen | 1:00 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Collie and Pitta in the NFL?? Get serious. Execution isn't the issue, lack of athletes is. How many coaches' or administrators' kids are on the team? Look at other schools and find 1 ex player's kid on the roster. Is our recruiting pool that small that the team is limited to friends and family?
Way To Go | 1:07 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Way to go BYU for making the MWC look bad. Loosing to the 5th ranked Pac-10 team. Close enough to perfection for you Bronco?
UNLV REBEL FAN | 1:20 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Seem to remember that last year after the Mountain West Men's basketball tourny that many on this board stated that BYU was "robbed" and that the UNLV team was classless, etc...So today I get to see the UNLV Men's basketball team beat the tar out of the Univ. of Ariz. A few hours later the TV gave me the opportunity of a another FANtastic game where the Ref's correctly called the ASU/BYU game and to top it all off, in my great city, the 17th ranked BYU football team lost to a team that had racked up 5 losses, ala the Univ. of Ariz. Think that I'm gonna pour some SUGAR on Jan 1st and have a great time. Enjoy
BYUI Ute Fan | 1:29 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I was really hoping BYU would win tonight. I like to see BYU lose. When bowl season comes around I am all about the conference looking good. Hope the MWC goes 4-1 now.
The I Told You So Ute Fans | 1:40 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
..sure do come out of the cracks when the Y loses. Surely, these are the same fans that were not filling their stadium seats when they couldnt sell them out in the recent rebuilding years.

Funny how the article about the BYU Arizona game has comments from 70% Ute fans. They really love to hate. Sure is alot of trash talk. Great sportmanship. You will crawl back in your holes when the weather is fair again.

You will support your football team because they have had a good year, but you cant fill the Huntsman Center for a basketball game.
Laguna Niguel Ute | 1:45 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Well you BYU fans have taken a lot of smack tonight. You can avoid this kind of crap by doing a few simple things.

First: Be a little humble, especially at the first of the year before you know how good or bad your team really is.

Second: Stop the the self serving arrogance and derogatory comments. BYU fans tend to come over with this sense of superiority of flat makes everyone dislike your program.

Third: Respect your competition and don't spend all season forecasting how BYU will kick butt and take name. I was amazed how you offended Utah State with cheap smack. You also offended Weber State every time you belittled Utah for having them on our schedule.

Fourth: Don't make cheap excuses for losing. Max did not give Utah 5 interceptions, we had a lot of defensive pressure on him.

Last: You spend all season talking about how great your team is and when you lose, all you can do is bad mouth the coach, Max, the kicker and anyone else on your team that was not up to par.

I do hope your BB team does well this year.
You remember wrong | 1:47 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Edward's era?

Where we lost 13 of 21 bowl games? Those golden years? Do you want to look at his last 6 years when we went to 3 bowl games and lost 2? Where we took 1st in conference only 3 times?

Go out to wikipedia and look at the stats on Edwards. He was a great coach. But down overblow his record.

Bronco is doing great. BYU has the talent. They had three games this year where they made many of the same mistakes. So it's time to learn.
Fire Bronco? | 1:52 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Are you kidding me? He coached a team to 10 wins and you want him fired? His 2 previous years he coached them to mountain west conference championships and he has a let down season by only leading the cougs to 10 wins. I think your being a bit harsh. I think Bronco has done a great job and it was just a poor ending to the season.
Amazed and Concerned | 1:58 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Comments by Bronco and his players had an eerie sameness--little mention of opponent and lots of talk about themselves--"we, we," even "we stopped ourselves." Really? Were there two teams on the field? And then "execution, execution, execution" in the coach and players comments. Self-focus and responsiblity are great, but knowing there is an opposing team on the field might help the Cougars.

AJ | 2:16 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Please, Coach, not talk about 'the team learned a lot tonight', 'our program is on track', etc. The CENTER screws-up the snap count! What a genius move! And no excuse about this being his first year at center! These clowns have played football almost 15 years by the time they are seniors. Don't they have snap counts in Pop Warner football, too!
byu fans... | 2:13 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I am waiting? please tell us how bad the Utes will embarrass the mountain west... PLEASE! How about losing to the 5th best pac 10 team... WOW! Your program oughta be ashamed for displaying. I recorded the game, and for about 10 minutes straight I just kept rewinding that missed field goal off the post. HILARIOUS!
SickNTired | 2:16 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I am so tired of watching BYU play like crap and then hearing the same cookie-cutter excuses after the game - "We didn't play to our potential" and "We simply didn't execute."

Is that all we're going to hear next year as they play through another mediocre season?

What's needed is somebody who can execute. I don't give a darn about passion, desire, and work ethic anymore if it doesn't lead to execution.
Exposed Again | 2:17 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
yet another fine example of the team down south being horrible overrated all season and no austin collie its not because you beat yourselves it is simple the 3 teams you lost to were more talented and BETTER get used to it. dick harmon put it best after the UTAH win byu is 1-20 vs. ranked teams. dont talk about deserving a better bowl until you can actually beat a middle of the road pac 10 team. at least you always have pregame firesides you've never lost one of those
Wake up Bronco! | 4:31 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Bronco needs to show some emotion, fire, something. He looks like he's half asleep on the sidelines. There is something to say for a coach that can keep his cool, but this is unbelievable. He looks like he's in a coma half the time on the sideline. Also, feel free to recruit a DB who can outrun my grandma and a half decent kicker. A pathetic, gutless and heartless performance. But, don't worry Cougar fans, Dick Harmon will write something about the Cougars shooting for a national championship next year. Pathetic!
utefan | 4:42 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Another whine session from the Zoobies from the school down south. Arizona didn't beat us, we just failed to execute.

I watched the game...loved those all red Zona uniforms...and it looked to me like this night Zona was the better team. Too bad somebody from Provo doesn't have the manners and upbringing to utter the words..."Congrats, Wildcats, you were the better team tonight.! Just another example of why folks love the hate the Coogs...arrogance even in defeat!
so sad | 4:44 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU has a premier running back in Unga and they rush him 17 times. Hall ran 10 times. See the problem?

It's nice that Collie gets his name in the records book, but it really isn't fair to the rest of the team who would rather have a win.

Bronco's a good coach except for his decision to listent to his offensive coordinator. That guy is making him look bad. If Utah, TCU, and Col State come back next year anywhere near the teams they were this year, the cougs drop these 3 in conference.
Potential | 5:01 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I think BYU totaly lived up to its potential this year, like they do almost every year. First, they set lofty goals an let everyone know about it. Second, they beat a few weak teams and started getting the big head. Third, they get punked by a team that they knew was gunning for them and then say how they didn't prepare good enough and were outplayed and outcoached. Fourth, they hang the success of their season on the Utah game(and you really do). Fith, they play down to the level of their competition and either lose a bowl game they should win or just squeek by and say what a great win it was.
I guess I just don't see what all the frustration is about, it's a typical BYU football season. Oh, and for the record, Utah would of beat Arizona by 30. GO UTES!!!!!
Jake Garn | 5:04 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Unga has the slowest start in college football . Hall is the worst BYU quarterback Lavell Edwards has ever seen wearing zoo blue . I was embarrassed to have them for my enemy .

It is so lame to claim "we beat ourselves". Give Arizona credit. I'm a BYU alum and the fact is Arizona beat us, period. Stop trying to put any other spin on it.

Joe the Fan | 5:45 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Well, its over. A BYU bowl loss, frustration, demands for a coaching change, anger and grief beyond description expressed, and depression slowly filling the Great Basin.

All that remains to salvage some MWC pride, ego and regional silliness is hope TCU can beat Boise State (which they should do against a very young, freshman and sophomore group of Broncos. Imagine, BSU is led by a freshman QB!) and hope Utah can just be respectable against Alabama.

Want some advice Wasatch Front folks? Get over it. Grow up. Shovel the sidewalk. Get a life.

Why put all your hopes for a long, cold winter of happiness on the performance of some 21 year old kids in football uniforms playing in a meaningless Vegas bowl game? The odds for achieving happiness are better on the Mesquite slots.

Now the big game for the MW Conference is TCU v. Boise State. It is interesting to see Cougar Nation turning into a Wasatch Front Hornfrog Nation hoping a Texas team that is looking to bolt from the MWC to a bigger conference can salvage BYU's season out of some silly notion it wlll raise the prestige of the MWC.

Go Utes and Broncos!

BYU's true colors are shining today baby! Overrated by a long shot. GO UTES!
Eugene | 6:18 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Stop all the personal Cougar attacks. They lost! It's just a game!!

Hopefully, the coaching staff can recruit some stronger corners and beef up the defense in outside speed. The offense will be fine if they can return everybody and field a stronger defense.

My only fault for BYU is to stay away from marketing slogans that hype up that anything short of undefeated is a bad season. You were hyped to fail since every team you played was charged up to blemish your perfection goal.
Powerhouse | 6:26 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I respect BYU for being a quality team and posting a very good season record. They certainly have nothing to be ashamed of, but they just aren't the powerhouse team that some of their fans pretend they are.
Chuck | 6:44 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Why does a 10 win season feel like such a failure? Because this team played below their potential. Maybe not physically, but the mental mistakes, penalties and turnovers summed up their season. The finaly drive in the first half last night summed up the season. Dropped touch down pass, then 3 straight penalties and a missed field goal. What this team needs to work on is mental execution. For what I am sure is a group of quality and intelligent men, they sure play mentally like high school drop-outs working on their GED
JMT | 6:44 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU has some pretty good athletes. Clearly we did not get humilitated at that level, in my opinion.

We were outcoached, AGAIN!

I agree with Bob in Line, that Mendenhall would make a great Fortune 500 motivational speaker. Maybe they should give him a new title. Something that reflects his skills. Then hire a mean, cuss of a coach who will get our players good and ticked off, ready to smack someone.

Then, get a coach who is aggressive and wants to pound someone into a pile of goo. Rushing 3 players almost the entire game?! Seriously! It is called a prevent defense and showed up in the NFL decades ago. The only thing a prevent defense does is prevent you from winning.

Do any, ANY of the great defenses in America rush 3? Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburg Steelers, to name the more visible ones. Do they? On occassion. Other than this, almost every play is a jailhouse break, meet at the quarterback.

Good crud, I finally think I'm ready to be the next defensive coordinator.

I remember the old cliche with Mendenhall is that his team started blitzing when they got off the bus. He must have forgotten this.

Well another year for BYU is over and as I stated in the 1st part of the year. The zoobies would lose to in a 3rd rate bowl to a 3rd rate PAC 10 team. Also as I stated before, look on the bright side you can get all your Christmas shoping done. Bowl games before Christmas. Why would you even want to play in one. Just shows how bad your program really is. Pretty soon we will hear the same crap all winter, spring and summer "this coming season will be our year for cougar football" What a joke! Have fun being the big fish in the little pound of provo!!!!
Fight ON!!!!
Pac-10? | 7:22 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Let's see, BYU beat the 10th place University of Washington by one, routed the 8th place UCLA and then lost to the 5th place Arizona. So if BYU was in the Pac-10 like everyone dreams, playing bigger faster teams week in and week out and sustaining injuries from playing bigger teams, they would have finished about where Arizona did......5th or 6th place. Yeah that seems about right. DId Dick Harmon or the other Utah reporters mention anything like this? They always mention when BYU or any Mt. Worst team does well against the Pac-10 so to be fair and accurate they should mention something similar to this! Right?
Nevada BYU Fan | 7:33 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
10-3 is a disappointment based upon expectations, but it is hardly a failed season. BYU fans need to quit getting too high emotionally when we win, and too low when we lose. And, to all the "fans" who I saw leave the game with 10 minutes left, don't buy tickets again, let REAL fans have the tickets. For "fans" to give up on our team like that I have one thing to say to you, you are the the poster children for fair weather fans. The comeback did not happen, BUT, it became quite interesting for awhile. Best of all, our guys never gave up. This team deserves loyalty win or lose.
Obviously Undereducated | 7:45 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
What, oh what would the Ybu fans do if they actually had to deal with actual adversity?

They're ready to jump off that creaky wagon at a mere close loss to a better team in a tougher conference. Cluefinder sez: Your team didn't start playing more poorly and your players didn't get worse because of a bye week before the USU game; the USU team revealed what the Ybu team always was, a team that would be going 6-6/7-5 without terrific coaching, so buy a clue, Ybu, and be happy for what you've got.

Obviously "You could be San Jose fans -- they've got similar talent and stayed home" Undereducated
Stating the obvious | 7:48 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Team speed wins games. When BYU plays more athletic and faster teams they lose. The slower, less athletic team loses. Utah will be reminded of this fact in New Orleans.
MWCMAC - the most overhyped | 7:55 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I don't know what to say beyond that.

Maybe next year go out and win first then talk trash after you win. Byu fans are dissapointed after a 10-3 season because they told themselves that they were national title contenders and had a heisman worthy qb. In reality they were a middle of the pack mid major. Throw out the N. Iowa, UCLA and Washington (all bad teams) and the season could have been my much worse.

Next year don't buy the hype of preseason rankings and hyped up expectations. I predict that the mtn west top three teams will not have a win this bowl season. Utah will get spanked and TCU is in for a suprise by a very disciplined and young Boise State squad.
Dennyg | 8:01 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
TCU stick the knife in the Bougars, Utah pulled it out and the Y bled itself to death in Rice Stadium.
Once again byu trashes another season because it didn't stand up to it's "perfect" season.
I may be a die hard Utah fan, but watching BYU lose is singularly my favorite thing in sports.
Bougar fans will brood about this for months, I'll be laughing for the rest of the day.
BWAhahahahahahhahah

Go Cougars | 8:06 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
BYU is my team. Win Lose or Draw. BYU stands for what I believe in. They have outstanding young men who live clean upstanding lives. I choose to root for the team who will set an example of excellence for my children. Not the teams who are win at all cost.
BYU will be back next year with another fine team. They may or may not go undefeated but whether they do or not they will be the team I look up to the most.
Thank you for giving us a fantastic season with lots to cheer about. I am sorry you lost 3 games but am still very proud of you.
As for you Utah fans..... GO ALABAMA

BYU scored more points this year against Arizona than USC did, it's just the cougar defense is young swiss cheese--hopefully they'll close up those holes next year.
comments | 8:16 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
I got to see the game and BYU on tv for the first time this year. The early non-fumble hurt BYU. It set the tone. A looked good at times, obviously quicker than the Y. A had a good running game. Y did not.

Y did not have a good passing game either. A certainly did. They played it right with the set ups and then the play. Very well executed, coached if you wish.

Y kicker was snake bit, poor guy. To hit the upright just about summed up the night. If he had made it they onside kick would have given headlines writers to say, "Y Rally falls short," etc.

But the truth was that A was better than Y and gradually that truth was made evident.

Next year? There is always a next year. But if this was a good Y team, then I certainly would not want to pay to watch them next year. QB was wayyyy over rated. Y needs to recruit more junior college kids.

Bronco,

We will continue to be out-executed until you ACTUALLY HAVE ATHLETES IN THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD!!!!!! We look horrible there year after year after year. I am embarrassed to have analysts and media laugh at us and mock us because we are so bad in that area.

Contrary to belief, you CANNOT just plug someone into "the system" and they'll do a great job if they just execute. GET SOME TALENT!!!!!! IT'S BEEN ABOUT 6 YEARS NOW THAT THINGS HAVE BEEN THIS BAD!!!
good day | 8:19 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
Yesterday was a good day. And today hasn't been to bad either, listening to all the whining coming out of provo. Buck up little homers, and you do realize you are homers, you can start a new quest for the national title next year. (snickering) Btw, Utah is going to get killed by Alabama. It will be another exposing of how over-rated the mwc is this year.
Give credit when credit is due | 8:21 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
After the Utah game, Coach Mendenhall said something like "Utah didn't win, BYU loss." Now Reed says "They didn't stop our offense, we stopped ourselves."

Perhaps a lesson/lecture to the entire team and coaching staff by President Samuelson - "Be gracious in victory and defeat."

Either your team wasn't as good, or you were out coached.
Hilarious | 8:32 a.m. Dec. 21, 2008
It's so funny to have read the comments from the BYU-faithful all season long about how awesome BYU football is and how they could steamroll the Pac-10 any time and any place.

Oh my gosh ... I think I'll be laughing for days about this.

TL;DR

Look, Coug-its. You CLEARLY haven't being paying attention to Arizona. USC allows one touchdown in a five-game stretch to... who?... Arizona. USC completely dismantled us as well... by a whopping seven points. Wheeeeewwwww! We're so awful!

Meanwhile, you beat WINLESS Washington by one point, because of a nonsense unsportsmanlike call on flipping the ball into the air.

I knew you guys were in trouble in watching the USU game. Any idea on where I can get one of your "Quest" shirts? Srsly... I want one.

I lived in Salt Lake for a few years and you BYU fans calling Ute fans classless is the pot. And now you blame the refs for that? Yeah, blame the refs that they "reviewed" a penalty that wasn't called AFTER the play was blown dead! I've NEVER seen that in college football.

You lost because you couldn't cover our wide receivers. Your defense KNEW what was coming, because we run essentially THE SAME OFFENSE. But you couldn't stop it. Hang this loss on your lack of preparation, not the refs.
