Tough day for BYU sports at the hands of Arizona.
Go ahead Ute fans | 10:14 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Enjoy the moment. The cougars have earned your disdain this year. As a BYU fan, I admit we stunk it up this year and did not win a meaningful game. Utah is the better team. Whittingham has definitely out coached Mendenhall this year.
Mendenhall Will... | 10:15 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
bring the program down. He can't motivate, recuit speed, and make a coherent sentence. BYU will, from here on out be just another rung in the ladder for the Utes to use to climb to the top. Shouldn't Randy Reid be leaving the NFL soon?
DennyG | 10:19 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
TCU put the knife in them, the Utes pulled it out and they left what heart they had on the turf at Rice Stadium.
Once again, BYU knuckles under the pressure of blowing another "perfect" season by trashing the last few games.
Even though I'm an avid Utah fan, I still enjoy the "Y"'s losing even more than a Ute win.
I'll be laughing about this for weeks.
BYU Classless, reap the | 10:16 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
whirlwind Cougar fans. You earned it with your smack talk to Utes, Aggies and Horned Frogs. You pummeled USU but the fact you talked smack speaks volume to the type of fan BYU has. Now Utah, TCU and AZ are a different story.

All we hear is smack smack smack all week all day all the time. Close it for once, accept defeat. You lost, you got it handed to you because you talk too much.

You were a mediocre team this year that actually would have finished 8th or 9th in the PAC-10.

BYU fans are so arrogant this is so great to see them truly humbled.

BYU fans keep talking smack on the lesser schools because when you play the real ones you are an embarrasment to the MWC!!!
Frustrated | 10:19 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
This season hurts for me as a BYU fan. We finished 10-3 but it felt like a 6-6 season. Where does Bronco go from here? Our Cougs couldn't win against tough teams. Arizona is a joke to lose to with their 8-5 record and their two wins against winning teams (one against BYU). This season and its sloganeering just left me a frustrated Y fan.
Woody | 10:20 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
10-3, a good season in the MWC. But let's face it, you have to play some real teams in real conferences. The MWC will remain a second class conference.
Jason | 10:18 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Way to embarrass the Mountain West Conference on a national stage, BYU. I thought you'd finally found a bowl opponent you could beat with unranked, 7-and-5 Arizona.

CHOKE!

Meanwhile, Utah is playing the best team in the BCS and should give them a better game then you guys gave uh, who again? Oh yeah, unranked, 7-and-5 Arizona.
Just plain angry! | 10:19 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
I am so angry about BYU's performance in this game that I can hardly stand it. Why, oh why, can't they put together a good performance when the dominos are stacked so much in their favor? BYU should have dominated Arizona. This is a horribly embarrassing loss.
I take it back | 10:24 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
To any Utah fan I made fun of for having the kicker be the best player on the team. I'm sorry, BYU could have used The King
Irrefutable proof ... | 10:30 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
of MWC inferiority.

As a PAC-10 guy I have read the countless comments about how far the MWC has risen and how bad the PAC-10 is. Well, BYU just showed to all the world (or at least the sizable ESPN viewing audience) just how weak the MWC is. Just to remind everyone -- BYU just got beaten down by the fifth place team in the PAC-10. BYU did not come anywhere close to playing like a #16 team. This doesn't bode well for Utah against Alabama.
Sweet | 10:30 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Very nice showing COUGS! This loss was directly related to the game on November 22nd. BYU lost this game tonight when they lost to Utah a month ago.
What an embarrassing deplorable performance.
All I can say is GO UTES!
Your kickers | 10:31 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
missed more in this game than ours did all year. Hail to the King!
Football #5 ??? | 10:31 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
BYU is a horrible football team. Maybe they should re-think those goals and move football up to #1 instead of #5 after faith, family and blah, blah, blah. I agree with the anonymous comment @ 9:47, this is not a seminary class nor is it a fireside. This is D-1 football and if you are going to accept an invitation to a bowl game, atleast have your players prepared and motivated to compete. The 5th best team in the Pac 10 kicked your butts tonight!

Bronco???? HUH??? | 10:37 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
The best part of the game was how on top of things Bronco was at the half, just minutes after it happened he was asked about them stumbling towards the end of the half. He said (paraphrasing) "yeah we went from 3rd an 1 to 3rd and 11 and then got a field goal when we should have had a touchdown..."

WRONG, it was 3rd and 16 and you MISSED a field goal... no wonder he never has concern, he equates attempting a field goal to making a field goal. So he though he had a chance as the final score was 31-30 after all...
Texas Ute | 10:42 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
I wore my stinking Y shirt (the only one in the closet) to pull for the conference, and this is what BYU brings to the table? Time to shut your traps. It was a great season for you, but it is pretty clear that the emperor has not clothes . . . you never were a top 25 team. I don't think you will carry that burden next year.

Go Utes!
I saved.... | 10:39 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
All of the preseason articles that hyped BYU. I love reading the comments throughout the season from Bronco about the Quest. I have read and heard all of the excuses after the TCU loss and the Utah loss. I heard all of the anxiety laden bravado after the close wins against Washington and UCLA.
Now I am curious how this one will be spun by the faithful.
Where was your pride tonight, Cougs?
Where was your motivation?
Where was your Quest for perfection?
It was all left on the carpet at Rice Stadium on November 22nd.
Tomorrow at church is going to be depressing... A lot of sad Elders.

YEE HAW1 | 10:45 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Here is my prediction. Over the next week or so we will hear Utes tell us how embarassing BYU is to the conference. Followed by BYU fans firing back with comments about the future whipping by the Tide. Why the hatred on both sides????????????

I am a fan--but our Db's couldnt cover the tabernacle choir women. Poor coverages and #16 Fowler kept blowing coverages. Get some DB's please. Collie could have gone and should have gone both ways.
Re: Irrefutable Proof | 10:41 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
I completely disagree that the MWC is overrated. BYU played very poorly and still had a shot to win this game (if they had a FG kicker).

I am a Ute fan and I've lived in PAC-10 country for 19 years and studied the teams. Utah could easily handle anyone in the PAC except USC. Yes, they are a huge underdog against Alabama, but if the Utes lose that game, it proves nothing about the PAC. Alabama is much better than anyone in the PAC.

Those Ute fans on here gloating about BYU's loss are missing the point. The MWC needs to win games like this to get respect for all of us.

Had Oregon State managed to beat Oregon and gone to the Rose Bowl, that would have been a true insult to NCAA Football. Utah beat Oregon State, not a crushing, but a win is a win.
Those dang PAC10 Officials | 10:42 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
I know, I know, the football team and the basketball team both lost today because of those officials. Come on Cougs, I am a huge Utah fan and I hate to say it but I wanted the Y to win tonight. We needed the win for the conference. Way to show up cougs! You all had hope you get some serious ballers on D next year or you will be lucky to go to a bowl game. Face the facts you just lost to a very average football team.
Ingrates | 10:42 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
We blow em out on the hill by 24 and then hand them the privilige of representing the MWC on national TV and look what they do, they totally negate all the hard work the WMC has done against the pac 10 this year. And then to watch them humiliated by another fan rush down onto the field with red jerseys - 2 games in a row. They looked like Bingham out there.
The worst part | 10:43 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
is having to listen to all the Ute fans gloat...

Yes, BYU was overrated this year, and yes they choked in the big games.

Yes, the year is over and we can start fresh next year. Hopefully it goes better. Next year, we get Utah, TCU, AFA and FSU at home. The season certainly has potential.

I am hoping, for the sake of the MWC and all mid-major conferences that the Utes can win. Unlike most Utes, I am not a sore loser, or sore winner. Maybe a little mutual respect would make the world a better place...
WOW | 10:48 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
What excuse will Dick come up with this time? The loss wasn't about a lack of execution, it was a lack of athletes. Maybe BYU should recruit some guys that aren't related to administrators or prior players. Atleast we won't have to hear about any "quests" or "positioning for next year."
Bad environment | 10:45 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
I think that exposing our wholesome young BYU men on the football team to the corrupting atmosphere of Las Vegas may have affected their spiritual sensitivity. I read that the team actually visited a casino. How can you expect to be at your best when you expose yourself to this type of environment? I feel that BYU should refuse to play in this bowl again.
Go Utes | 10:48 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Max "The Lax" Hall has done it again.
I actually wanted BYU to win this one, ha ha, what was I thinking?
BlueBoy | 10:51 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
We've seen Bronco's Achilles heel: too loyal to bad assistant coaches. Anae's game planning was horrible. The defense stunk it up, making A's QB look like an All Star--very seldom bothering him.

Too bad we'll have both Anae and Hall back next year.

Collie had another great game, and SHOULD go pro. He'd be dumb to stick around for next year's 7-5 team (and that's being generous).

No, I'm not bemoaning. Just bummed about a real lack of excellence in a program that strives for just that.
Spanked | 10:49 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Nice going BYU. If this is Cougar football, I am afraid to call myself a fan.
Please FIRE Bronco: He is far too soft to lead this team. He should have never been hired as the coach of this team. At best he was a decent Def. Coordinator. But clearly he is not a head coach.

Woody | 10:54 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Don't blame Max Hall, he was rushed all night and the receivers were covered. To they guy that thinks Utah would do well in the PAC-10, get real!! MWC is a second level conference, Utah would not be undefeated in the PAC-10.
Irrefutable Proof - come on, MWC is overrated. Oh, and the tv gus on ksl complaining about the fumble call being blown dead. Usual stuff here, it's is always someones fault except the team.
Well.... | 10:52 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
That was poopy. There was not a whole lot to take from that. I guess after all of this BYU just "weren't who we thought they were". :) Good MWC team yes, but not top tier....which for some reason they had us all fooled that that was what they were supposed to be. I feel jipped! But best of luck to the rest of the MWC teams...go TCU, Air Force, and yes Utah as well!
Anonymous | 10:55 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
BYU needs to decide what type of institution they want to be. If they want to be like a military school (like the announcers said) and put football #5 on the list of most important things, they can't expect to beat teams who have it number #1 or 2. Do you want the BCS or a really righteous team? You can't have it all.
Don't Worry | 10:53 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
It's just a game. :) I know it's fun to watch and talk about, but in the end it's just a game. Keep that in mind. It's not worth making derogatory comments about someone else's religion or "lack" of it. It's not worth bashing people just because they had a bad game out on the field.

Was it Hall who rated himself as a top QB in the nation? Was it BYU that ranked themselves in the top 25? Sure they got everyone hyped up at the beginning of the season, but which team doesn't do that? Let's get real here.

DrewtheUTEMAN | 10:54 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Just like I predicted earlier today, the cougars lost to Arizona and I am now dancing on shards of broken ybu BCS dreams while visons of the SUGAR BOWL dance in my head. See the rest of you UTES in New Orleans!! (See you on Sundays Collie)

I don't know that's pretty harsh. I'm a hawk fan but I think Bingham could have beat BYU this year. For that matter I think there's three high schools that could have beat the Y this year

Wow, way to represent the MWC Cougars. Your a horrible road team, a poor bowl team, and over rated. You beat TWO teams with winning records this year, Air Force and Colorado State. Your strength of schedule was #111 of #119. What a joke! You should have lost to New Mexico, UNLV, and Washington. If the Utah State game had 10 more minutes added to it, you would have lost to the Aggies as well. Your coach jinxed the season and got you all to believe you were BIG TIME. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch, live with it losers. YOUR BAD!
Mike Belotti | 11:02 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
See I told you BYU couldn't even play in the top half of the PAC-10. They beat two of the worst teams in the PAC-10 - Big Deal.
Grow Up | 11:00 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Max Hall needs to learn how to step up for big games. It seems like he is good at the small games, but when big games come, he crushes under the pressure, and doesn't perform where he needs to be performing at!

And Bronco needs to take responsibility for the 3 penalties in a row, which cost us at least a field goal, if not a touchdown!
