Its U-T-E-S! | 10:47 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
As a Native American I do not find offense in the usage of the name Utes as the mascot of the University of Utah. I see it as a sign of respect and not to mention the namesake for our great state of Utah.

However, I do find offense to things like the tomahawk chop, the name "Redskins" and mocking the "Utes" name with the juvenile on purpose mis-spelling of "yewts" that attempts to demean your rival.

How would you like it if a team you played against was called the "Navuoo Mob" and made a shooting gesture mocking the murder of Joseph Smith?

Not too funny is it?

A little human decency goes a long way!

Go Utes!

Yewts/Zoobs - Slur? | 11:08 a.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Political correctness on a sports blog? Heaven forbid. I suppose a PETA fan will write in complaining on behalf of all cougars, mountain lions, pumas and cats.

Otherwise most of us ignore the those that use slurs "ywets", "war kittens", "zoobs" as an extension of their ignorant and generally stupid arguements - if you can call them that at all.

Otherwise, save the PC'ness for the political/church blogs. If your sensibilities are offended and can't take the smack find yourself a new source of entertainment.

or are most of the comments here foolish enough to belong on the playground: "my dad can beat up your dad" i can't even believe how ridiculous some of you are acting.
U fans~ lets use some logic here- you're all crowing about how invincible the utes are and how embarrasing the Y is to the MWC, but what superior teams did the U play this year that the Y didn't? you basically had the same schedule minus a few teams and yes, you played superior, but some of you are acting like you've beaten teams like florida or oklahoma, so give me a break. yes, your team is great this year!, so why do you have to be so nasty and classless about it?
Y fans~ let's put things in perspective... yes, the losses stunk and byu didn't perform like they should have in 3 games this season, that is exactly why we love to watch football because the outcome is never certain. so why do fools always blame it on bronco or firesides or individual players? c'mon people. i will always be a byu football fan! just because we lose three games doesn't mean we're doomed!
same ole excuses .... | 12:28 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
with BYU it's the same ole excuses after they lose to a team with a winning record - "we didn't execute". Let's change that a bit - you actually DID execute to the best of your ability BYU but Arizona (like TCU and Utah) CAUSED you to not execute better. That is what happens when you play a better team - you just don't execute as well. BYU could practice for 6 weeks straight and the outcome would be the same as well as the excuses -" we didn't execute". So how do you fix POOR EXECUITION???? Practice harder??? Nope - how about getting BETTER PLAYERS!!!!! YES, BETTER PLAYERS will solve poor execution every time. So Bronco, since you are so bold to stand up and take the blame (which you should) it is time to put up or shut up. Either stop all the nonsense talk about "quest for excellence" and accept mediocrity OR go get some players that do do have some SPEED, and SIZE and that can solve this "execution problem" that BYU seems to have when playing good teams.
nate | 12:44 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Another loss in a meaningless bowl game! Oh Well! At least BYU is 1-0 in the only bowl game that truly mattered when they won the National Championship in 1984!

Teams can rack up all the bowl wins they want, but if the bowl game isn't for the National Title, who really cares?

I think it would be funny to see Utah go undefeated again this year and yet only have an MWC title to show for it! Even if they beat 'Bama, it's just another meaningless bowl win with No National Championship to show for it!!

In 1984 | 12:48 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
BYU beat a 6-5 Michigan team because Washington didnt want to play BYU (money) and opted to play Oklahoma (ranked) instead.
Somehow in the end BYU became national champs by going undefeated and beating nobody...
By this logic wouldnt the 04 Utes be national champs?
nate | 12:51 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
A National Title is a National Title!! BYU won every game on their schedule in 1984 and deserved to win the National Title! Utah has yet to win a National Title....close doesn't cut it!

re: Yewts/Zoobs - Slur? | 1:10 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
But you are missing the point. Terms like "Zoobs," "kittens," and the likes are very different. These two alterations are not directed at a tribal name. "Yewts" is altering and mocking the name of an established, recognized native american tribe. That's why it is kind of spiteful and offensive.
Hey nate | 1:11 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
You werent even alive in 1984 were you?
"Meaningless" could also be applied to a trophy that is nearly 25 years old...
When the championship you won is older than most of your players, it loses a lot of credibility.
Way to beat a 6-5 Michigan team for the "title" though. That was REALLY impressive
Arizona Reader | 1:10 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
I'm a Cougar fan and I had to eat crow after such a poor showing from the Cougs. Go back and watch the game if you have it on TiVo or DVR. They show a clip of the two teams running out of the tunnel...that is all that they needed to show. U of A was very excited to be there and BYU just jogged out like it was another game. The game was over (mentally) from the beginning. These are BYU's issues they need to fix next year to have any chance at BCS hopes:

* Cornerbacks that run faster than a 5.0 40-yard dash
* A running back that stops rushing like a pansy and powers it up the middle
* A kick return team that is worth a penny candy
* A defensive line that acutally gets to the quarterback
* An offensive line that isn't so huge they get in their own way. With our size, Hall should never be hit, and we ought to average 5 yards a rusn minimum.
* Hall to step it up in big games and not panic. He's 0-3 in games played against avg or better opponents.

Re:Nate | 1:34 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Wow, I would not have known the Holiday bowl in 1984 was tied to the National Championship.

Wait it wasn't! Which means BYU did not play in an NC bowl game.

Not only that they weren't awarded the National Championship after they won the Holiday bowl. It wasn't until a few weeks later after everyone lost were they awarded(gifted) the NC.

So technically BYU has never played in a National Championship Bowl game *either*.

seasons come and seasons go. yes, it STINKS when your team chokes in a game. yes, it's GREAT when they go undefeated! but BOTH Y and U fans need to stop the neener neener name calling (at each other and at the coaches/players!) and show some basic civility and respect. it is so foolish to finger point to just one or a few reasons to why your team loses a game. just as MANY things contribute to a win (coaching, players, and even circumstances) the same goes for a loss. we ALL have our good days and bad days. the same max hall that didn't play up to par in the arizona game is the SAME max hall that helped us gain 10 wins. a 10-3 season is not something to be ashamed of. it stinks when the last two losses were hard, but BYU is still a great football team! i fully support bronco, the other coaches, and the players from this year and wish them a Merry Christmas! GO COUG'S!
RE: Nate | 2:01 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
Yes BYU did deserve a championship but that is the point look how jazzed you are about 1984??? As a sports fan in general there is no other school that has fans like BYU. 1984 that is a long time ago. In current terms BYU is one of the worst bowl teams in college football. They lucked out with a 6-5 Michigan but yes you won GREAT JOB.

Again GREAT JOB BYU YOU WON IN 1984 but back in current 2008 BYU is football garbage especially when they have to step outside LES.

BYU IS CURRENTLY HORRIBLE BUT YES YOU WON IN 1984. I wasn't alive yet but good work.

BSU, undefeated National Champs this season and 2 years ago by the same reasoning.

Constant Reminders of the Weak Mythical National Championship (split if I recall correctly) makes Cougar Fan appear desperate to hang on to long past glory. For those of you mathematically challenged folks, 1984 was 34 years ago. A Mythical National Championship 34 years ago means nothing. A Bunch of tired Sportswriters who didn't have the backbone to vote for the real best team in 1984 is the real reason for the 1984 BYU Mythical National Championship

This too will pass.

it may be embarrassing that the Y didn't play well in the las vegas bowl, but what's more embarrassing is how some Y (and U) fans act afterwards. c'mon people. i know posting helps people to vent, but realistically the Y had a good football season, even if the last 2 games were hard to swallow. it's hard to end on a bad note, but we can rally. the blame game gets us no where. coach mendenhall has and is doing a great job with the football program.

Then to hide behind the "Sacredness" of the Ute Nation when it was the UofU who chose the name, and the names "Yeweties, Ewets, Yewts" come out, you continue to whine.

Grow up a little bit, Ute fans.

I'm the one who posted the comment about using the term "Yewt" being disrespectful. Well, FYI, I don't need to go back to my reservation, because I already LIVE ON A RESERVATION. It's your choice if you want to be immature and disrespect my heritage, just because someone calls you a "zoobie." You sound really grown up! If you want to hide behind the 1st ammendment, so be it. Just don't pay us a visit on the reservation. Don't cry when people start calling you "MORONS" instead of Mormons.
Re: Language | 4:50 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
As a very embarrassed BYU graduate, I want to make it clear that "Language" must represent a tiny fraction of BYU fans and students. Maybe you can say whatever you want, including racial and ethnic epithets but it makes you, your school and the church that operates it look bad (mostly it just makes you look racist). When I attended BYU religious instruction was mandatory. Did something change? Just in case, I will refer you to Matthew 5:44 or 3 Nephi 12:44. I guess you also forgot that little admonition about turning the other cheek.
479 posts | 4:52 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
400 from Utah fans whining about a myriad topics, from the game, to disrespecting the "Ute Nation", to closing the doors at BYU.

I'm just curious. Utah beat BYU once in the past three years, but revel in the fact that BYU lost to TCU and AZ.

Do you Utah fans really have any type of life? Does this loss improve your income, your relationship with your family, your friends, co-workers? Utah was not even on the field when BYU played TCU or AZ, yet 479 posts?

Are you kids really that miserable?

It's sort of pathetic when you think about it.

Personally, I think BYU had a decent season, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I think that is the difference. I am a BYU fan. I don't hate the Utes. I wish them success.

Go and beat Bama, but if you lose, and really get your rears handed to you, do you really think all the negativity you have handed out this year won't come back to you through some sort of Karmic retribution?
Unbelievable | 5:11 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
The Native American mascot controversy has been with us since the 1970's. It should be noted that while some tribes have requested that the use of their tribal name as a mascot be discontinued, other tribes have supported the use of their tribal names as a tribute to their heritage.

The Ute tribe approved the use of the name "Utes" for the University of Utah and the NCAA granted a waiver to allow the name to remain. (Several other schools have been granted similar waivers while, infamously, the University of North Dakota kept appealing to the NCAA to keep the name "Fighting Sioux" despite the failure of the Sioux tribe to approve the use of the name and as a consequence U of ND received some mild sanctions from the NCAA).

The "go back to your reservations" comment by "Language" is beyond belief. I can't even think of something more offensive to a Native American. I hate it when people refer to Mormons as "morons" but (and I say this as someone who is LDS), in the case of "Language", it is more than appropriate.
re:re: Language | 4:29 p.m | 5:14 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
"It's your choice if you want to be immature and disrespect my heritage, just because someone calls you a "zoobie." You sound really grown up!"

I really doubt you are a Native American living on a reservation. Ute trolls have a way of being dihonest on these boards. However, I would like to respond as if you are who you say you are.

I think you really need to grow up, and stop hiding behind the disrespect to your heritage. Dude, no one is disrespecting your heritage. They are disrespecting the U of U the same way Ute fandom disrepects BYU.

You spoke of choice. It's your "choice" to lend your name to the University of Utah. What, you are surprised that some fans are going to make fun of it.

Many college sports team have had their American Indian Mascots pulled. You chose not to. And, like the previous poster said, we have the first ammenment right to free expression in this country, no matter how offensive or repugnant it gets.

My advice, if you don't like it, pull the name.

And serious, "Morons" instead of "Mormons"? That's incredibly "fresh" and mature. What college team has a Mormon Mascot?

It is really scary that at the end of 2008 some readers of the Deseret News would support ethnic insults. Maybe Utah is as backward as many outsiders think.
re:re: re: Language | 5:57 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
I am neither a Ute nor a Cougar (nor a native of Utah for that matter) but have followed both football teams somewhat since moving here about two years ago. The back-and-forth between the fans of both schools often is quite amusing (and juvenile) but in this case it's actually worrying me.

Let's see -- you are recommending that if a university doesn't want the name of its team mocked by racists it should change the name? Or, if members of the Ute tribe don't want their tribal name mocked that they should withdraw permission for its use? I think I get it -- no one should call on racially based insults to be stopped, we should just have the targets of those insults change their name if they don't like it. I guess the 1960's skipped BYU. Keep on exercising your first amendment rights -- it shows us all just how much prejudice, arrogance and hatred you harbor.
RE: Nate | 6:18 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
By the way, who did Utah truly beat this year or in 2004 for that matter?? Every Utah fan knows that TCU beat themselves, and Oregon State beat themselves. Utah only won 10 games this year.
------------------------------------------------------
Hmm one team comes to mind... Hint a 48-24 thrashing.

That's funny, with your logic CSU and Washington beat themselves. So BYU is 8-5 this year but unlike you I don't live in the fairy-tail world.

I recall OSU and TCU could not stop a real QB from winning the game at the end. See unlike Max Hall BJ showed up in big games.

More facts for Zoobs to ponder:

2004 Utah beat a #19 8-4 Pitt vs.
1984 BYU beat no ranked team and beat 6-5 MI

2008 Utah team beat 3 ranked teams and with 12-0 made the 2nd BCS vs.
BYU lost to TCU 32-7, 48-24, and a lame UofA team that lost to New Mexico and was 7-5.

Given these facts its no wonder Zoobs have an elite program.
Y Grad & Dad | 6:31 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
I think the misuse of the Ute name needs to stop. I would hope that all of BYU's alum would speak out against the Insult directed to the Ute tribe. Also Mr. Dick Harmon a lot of fans put stock into the things you write here's your chance to speak up and do the right thing towards stopping this insult.
RE: Nate | 8:20 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
In 2004 Utah beat some very good teams: Texas A&M, New Mexico, North Carolina, Wyoming, BYU (wait I said good teams), 2008 They beat Oregon State, TCU, And Michigan in the BIG HOUSE(bad year but still had some good games), BYU (woops another slip, I meant good teams) and they dominated all the other MWC teams. 1984 National Championship Only teams BYU played were average Baylor, Tulsa, and Pitt. Great year for BYU but National Championship is a JOKE

6:18 and 8:20 - It's been 24 years and you guys are still whining! I'm a mild BYU fan and I love the Utes (I'm hoping and expecting them to beat Alabama and show the over-rated SEC that they ARE over-rated. But I must say this about the 84 Cougars - all they did was beat everybody on their schedule. They were the only team in the nation to do that. What else can you ask or expect fo them? We can speculate about a number of games - What would have happened if they had played -----? But that's all it is - specualtion. So get over it.
2004 utes | 8:40 a.m. Dec. 23, 2008
the utes were definitely good in 2004, but unfortunately for them got no National Title to show for it. It's a disgusting college football system that allowed a team like Pittsburgh into the BCS in 2004. It's a shame Utah never had the chance to prove how good they were that year, by playing a top 10 team or playing in a college football playoff. We'll never know how good utah really was that year.

I write this from a Tribal clinic where I work and can assure you that most Native Americans take no offense when their Tribe is represented properly. The main reason why Utah fans love to hate BYU is because of their utter arrogance/ignorance. I believe this arises by being members of the "only true church" and living in Utah forever. This makes you think that everyone else's relgion is "not true" and gives you a slanted perception of reality. When this is totally engrained in you, you also believe your University is "true" and everyone else's is "not true". Somehow, because you have class, nobody else does. FYI Cougars, nobody likes it when others put themselves on a pedestal and look down on their religion, university, etc. This is why UTE fans are passionate about trying to knock BYU of that lofty pedestal!
Who cares about 1984... | 2:37 p.m. Dec. 23, 2008
I get so sick and tired of these BYU fans that bring up that faux National Title in 1984. That paper championship was awarded when College Football had a worse system in place than the current BCS. That '84 team played a weak schedule with no ranked opponents and defeated a horrible 6-5 Michigan team. Not to mention, like a previous poster, they played Michigan by default or else the Washington team would have rolled BYU. I can tell you this BYU fans, along with death and taxes, there is a third certainty, you will never win another National Title. The bottom line is, you recruit subpar athletes. Your athletes are slower, smaller and lack true D-1 talent. Football falls 5th on your goals list and until you loosen up on University standards the top level athletes will avoid the commitment. You may have the trophy in the case but it should carry a huge asterisk or better yet- give it back to the NCAA with an apology. Utah fans are giving it to you pretty hard after your embarrassing showing in Las Vegas but please refrain from running your 1984 title smack.

I'm a Ute fan, but I must defend BYU when I read comments like how bad Arizona spanked them. Did anyone look at the numbers for this game? BYU had more first downs, more passing yards, more rushing yards and the edge in time of possession. They just made too many mistakes.

I certainly wouldn't give Arizona too much credit.

To the BSU fans, you're 12-1 now. Good season, but time to stop whining about the BCS and claiming to be better than Utah.

To TCU, Utah beat you. It was a close game, but you lost. You're not #1 in the MWC.

To Bama fans (including recent Bama converts who just want to see the Utes lose), go ahead and keep underestimating the Utes. You're playing right into our hands.

look i dont care if youre a ute fan or byu fan im neither but lets be honest byu and the utes will never be able to beat Georgia, Bama, Or Florida they are to big to fast and to strong. and Oklahoma doesnt count when Bosie beat them Big 12 has no D SEC has everything and Florida is ridiculous. Bama is HUGE and should beat Utah by 21 easily and georgia has the best RB in the country (ask Hawaii, and the CMU player he hurdled) these tiny schools that have USU and other horrible teams on the scheduel will never and should never go to a BCS game it is a waste of the SEC teams time.
