Buttars, I HOPE, takes this as a GREAT compliment! MSNBC is athe least reputable of ALL the news services. They gave Obama a large amount of free cheerleading leading up to his win. They are THE MOST FAR-LEFT of any news organization. I didn't see the report but I'm sure it had to do with Buttars wanting to call Christmas what it is, - CHRISTMAS! See, the far-left don't like that! It implies a belief system in something besides secularism, and that makes them nuts!

I thought Foxnews was a little tilted until I saw MSNBC!

By the way, I thought Olbermann lost his job, and they put him in sports or something???
JTM | 3:05 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Can't people see the light that this "war on Christmas" is some made-up war so that some people can choose to feel persecuted? There's nothing wrong with happy holidays- it INCLUDES Christmas, and every other holiday during the season. Why do people choose to think that is somehow a bad thing?

What an embarrassment! Doesn't he realize that every time he's in the media it's over something rediculous? Does the Utah Legislature just funnel all the crazy legislation to him, knowing he's the only one that will actually run it?

I would consider this an honor! I don't give much clout to Keith 'World's Worst Commentator' Olbermann or MSNBC. Maybe this will hurt his and their ratings even further resulting in only about 10 people watching his show?
Funny | 3:13 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Oh West Jordan, how did you vote for this guy AGAIN?

As for the making fun of Mormon thing, as soon as Mormons stop telling everyone that they are the only people who have the correct answer the "attacks" will stop.

But if you ask me, the sword has two edges, and Mormons just do not want to admit that they are antagonistic.

olbermann is the top on my list of most biased "news" person. He's an idot!
Dear C.W. | 3:39 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Keith Olbermann got a raise (four year contract worth $7.5 million per year).

It was all over the news - but you don't watch the news, do you? (Otherwise, you'd know more about MSNBC directly, rather than taking hate-radio's POV for it.)

Keith made an excellent point: If the government passes a law recommending that merchants say only "Merry Christmas", then someone else can recommend that Jewish and Buddhist temples say only "Merry Christmas".

Here's an idea: lets make Utah a Butters free zone. Lets eliminate that unpleasant lump, that at times bulges out and makes offensive or inane noise.

D. Palmer | 3:48 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
It doesn't suprise me Christians are now under attack in this country from the media. What is ironic is that it is the Judeo-Christian foundation of our law and political institutions that allows it and they are working to destroy it.

The greatest lesson all the stay-at-home people or talk-show crowd can get from this article is how they need to turn their tvs off! Don't support these freaks or their sponsors. No more Ellen, Oprah, the View, Olbermann, MSNBC, CNN, FoxNews, political parties (yes- both the big ones-- face it) or any other network or program that consistently marginalizes LDS beliefs or people. Don't give them the time or the money to continue oppressing you. Almost no media outlet is on your side-- I guarantee it.
Who noticed? | 3:48 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
If the people watching The View had any sense at all, all 3 of them would be offended at Joy Behar's comment, not to mention the laughs from the others. Unfortunately, on the day this program aired, 2 of them were at the hairdresser and the other was getting her nails done, so nobody saw it.
C.W. | 3:50 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
BTW: I agree with Scott Pierce, the "ladies" on The View are not near as clever as THEY think they are.

R.E. CW | 3:52 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
I use the term Merry Christmas, but I don't get offended by people who don't or won't use it. Your the type of person WHY stores use a generic greeting. Because if someone with your ahhh tempermental disposition disagrees with the term 'Merry Christmas' they will sue the stores. This in the end is a non issue sure to consume "Senator" Buttars and others of his ilk.
Michelle | 3:54 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
I cannot stand Chris Buttars and have no idea how he keeps being re-elected. He makes me ashamed to be a Utahn because he makes us all look stupid.
Oh, C.W. | 3:54 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Why, oh WHY, do you have to try to DEFEND the most OBNOXIOUS person in the Utah LEGISLATURE? But if you're going to DO IT, lay off the RANDOM CAPITALS and the ROVE-STYLE defense (which is, when you're CRITICIZED, just ATTACK SOMEONE ELSE AND HOPE NO ONE REMEMBERS HOW THIS STARTED). If there is some rational defense for Buttar's unconstitutional suggestion that the government should promote Christianity or any other religion, LET'S HEAR IT, OKAY C.W.?
Vote with your wallet.? | 3:59 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
The Keith Olbermann bit is just funny, but the Joy Behar comment is downright offensive. But she isn't alone. A recent Law and Order episode made reference to Mormons' "magic underwear" and even showed a shirt intended to be a replica of it. There isn't much we can do to combat this perniciousness. Letter-writing campaigns probably won't do much. We can all stop watching the shows, stop buying the products advertised on the shows, and make our feelings known to the network. Hopefully, we represent enough of a market share to convince them to change things. Probably wishful thinking.
GET REAL C.W. | 4:06 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Olberman's spot has never been anything but an Op-Ed piece and ,to my knowledge, has never marketed itself as anything but. I hope people like you realize that people such as Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh are of the same ilk as Olberman; just a different side of the coin: None are newspeople. They are not unbiased reporters. They each hawk thier wares to a specific market and nothing is wrong with that until people make the mistake that they are unbiased.

This far leftist has no problem with anyone wishing me a "Merry Christmas" even if I don't celebrate it. Well wishes should be taken as meant by the giver. But when a government official tries to mandate things such as this even you should have a problem with it. What if the mandate were to require store personnel to wish you Happy Kwanzaa? Might you might take offense at that?

One thing to remember: This was a government session not a religious meeting at which Buttars was speaking. Laws or mandates cannot be made to enforce a religion, or religous activity upon people. If so, what's next: being forced to attend church?
Cats | 4:16 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Keith Olberman is the worst person in the world...and he has no competition.
Non Partisan | 4:21 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
I hope people don't rely on MSNBC for their opinion of politicians. To me that is like using The View for my source of news. MSNBC is so far left that their news becomes no longer reliable. When one focuses entirely on one side, they don't take time to look at both sides to find the truth. It is no longer journalism, but propaganda.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA | 4:35 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
I generally consider Olbermann to be a bit of a loudmouth but he sure did put Buttars right where he belongs on this one.

It is beyond me how this babbling idiot continues to get elected. Has the collective intelligence of our voting community really started scraping the bottom of the barrel? I know we have people capable of providing much better representation.

Oh - and someone should inform Buttars that we are NOT a Christian nation (and by this I am not saying Christianity is bad). This was a nation founded on the principle of religious freedom not for practicing one specific overall religious ideology which is quite different. Even though many early citizens were Christians this does not a Christian country make.

And since when is it Anti-Christmas to say Happy Holidays? This phrase is generally meant to include the whole season from Thanksgiving to New Years and for some to include persons of all faiths in their merry wishes. Which, in actuality, is the more Christian thing to do.

People need to quit being so touchy and offended. I'm not Jewish but I don't get offended by Menorah displays or any other religious holiday greeting.
Reason | 4:36 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Re: JTM: Youre right there is nothing wrong with the phrase Happy Holidays. But there IS something wrong with an employer prohibiting his employees from saying, Merry Christmas. Buttarss resolution seeks to counter the latter, because its an infringement on freedom of religion and freedom of speech. The resolution does not and cannot enforce anything, but merely seeks to once again raise a vital principle that has been greatly eroded in recent years. I congratulate Senator Buttars for his courage and decency. Getting on Olbermanns worst list is a COMPLIMENT in this case.
HSFAN | 4:37 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
NO Big Surprise!! Olberman has never said "Merry Christmas" to anyone in his life!
I am far from a freak but . . . | 4:40 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Folks here don't like Oberman, which is fine, but to ignore the fact that a lawmaker is spending time getting a recommendation passed on what stores should say isn't bothersome?

A few years ago religious people (I am one too) were making a craze of not commercializing Christmas. Now, a guy is making it a point of government to pass a suggestion that we DO commercialize Christmas? Are there no Jews in West Jordan? Is Butters representing them too?
Not Worthy | 4:42 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008

Called Christmas and its always been called marriage.

For some reason the enlightened-progressives want to change things.

Now, thats change we can believe in.
Who cares? | 4:53 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
And we should care about this why???

Should our goal in life be to make Keith Olbermann happy?

Note:
It may not be as big an honor as you may think. Buttars was the 'DAILY' winner of Olbermann's "Wost Person in the world award". So that means there are 356 winners of Mr Olbermann's "Wost Person in the world award" every year. That gets to be a pretty large group fast.

And we are supposed to believe only Rush Limbaugh's show contains negativity or divisiveness? So what's with this "WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD" award he gives out daily??? Sounds like those whining about conservative talk radio's negativity don't have much room to complain when their shock-jerk does the same thing in his programs.
Reason | 5:01 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
This is not a matter of business speech which employers have a right to specify its a matter of political correctness vs freedom of religion and freedom of speech. Senator Buttars is right to speak up on the issue.

Buttars is not telling businesses what to say. On the contrary, hes telling businesses that they are wrong to prohibit their employees from saying Merry Christmas. But a few of you, with your mock outrage and derision (and sometimes under multiple names), are merely taking advantage of this as a convenient jump-on-Buttars opportunity because you disagree with some of his other political or moral views.
Who is KO? | 5:07 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Who is Keith Olbermann? Until this story I'd never heard of him. Who voted for Buttars again? Sheesh! Somebody please stick a cork in his mouth. The View just gives airheads a bad name, and Baba Wawa leads that parade. So this article was basically about all the drivel that has become a significant part of our society, and with the economy in the dumps and terrorists blowing people up around the world. What have we come to?
...and by extension... | 5:18 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
...and, by extension, all the sheep who voted for this bigot.

Seriously, how is it a good idea to vote for such a bigot? How does that thought process go? Works to pass legislation to descriminate against gays- check. Makes disparaging comments about blacks- check. Marginalizes people of religions other than his own- check. Sure, I'll vote for this guy. Sounds like the kind of guy who can represent all constituents, not just the one's who look just like him. After all, all men are created equal.
Cherilyn Bacon Eagar | 5:19 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Consider the source. What a great compliment! Senator Buttars is now in good company with Joseph Smith, founder of the LDS Church, also on Olberman's list of "worst" people in the world for being a racist, rapist, liar and bigot.

What's embarrassing is that all our other great conservative Utah legislators were left off his list.

Don't any of you remember what a fool Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman made out of themselves during the campaign. CNBC has to pull them. What a disgrace. I can't even be in the same room when either one of them is on the tube. My wife will leave the room if I even accidentally get Matthews on the screen while surfing the channels. These two are the worst in the business.
Tuffy Parker | 5:37 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
There are lots of people that love to hear themselves talk even when they don't have anything to say. Olberman, Buttars and the ladies on the View just happen to be some of them.

Their advice/opinions and $1.06 will get you something off the dollar menu at Micky D's.
Cindyluwho | 5:46 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
I went to ABC.com. There, at the bottom of the page in tiny letters was "Contact ABC." That sent me to another page where I had the opportunity to express my opinion. Which I did. I told them how I feel about Joy Behar making fun of "Mormom underwear" in relation to talking about how to hide an illegal gun. I asked for (and will not ever get) a formal apology. Meantime, I am boycotting ABC.

At least it made me feel better.
ajarizona | 6:00 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Two of the rudest, most discusting people around are Joy Behar and Bill Maher, and these two creeps make more anti-Mormon slurs than anyone I know of.

These two people are Larry Kings favorite souls on earth. Larry king is married to a Mormon. Does he mock his wifes underwear?

How is this bigoty tolerated in the aging mind of Larry King? It's time that he corrects them and stops turning over his show to them.

I won't attend another stadium of fire until he is off the board of directors, or cuts loose these twerps from his favs list.

Try mocking the sacred garments of other faiths, Cowards. It's open season on everything Mormon.

It's OK we've handled tougher thugs than these.
TO: Reason | 6:05 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
You are correct: This is about freedom of speech. But if Buttars is simply trying to get retailers to allow the word "Christmas" able to be uttered by thier employees isn't this the government promoting one religion over another? Isn't that exactly what the government is supposed to NOT do? Why is Buttars singling out one religous epitaph? If this were really about Buttars' honest defense of freedom of speech and religion then he should have included the holiday greetings for all religions that have such during this time of year.
