Mulling over some BCS possibilities

Utah Mann | 12:23 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
I would much rather play Texas in the Fiesta bowl than BSU. BSU is over-rated and Utah would prove that by beating them by 50. I think a Utah Texas matchup would be great!!
Yawn | 3:50 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Utah vs. Boise St? Now there's an exciting game...watched by all the people in Utah and Idaho. Let's see, isn't that about 2.5 million people???

Wrong!!! Why would Junker kill the Fiesta Bowl to take two loser teams with no fan base or media market?? What have you people been drinking with your Postum??

I really, REALLY hope Utah gets a decent draw this year and gets shown up for their real level of talent which is mediocre at best.
Re: Utah Mann | 5:31 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Of course you would rather play Texas, because you would have nothing to lose and would be expected to lose...so no surprise when the Utes actually do lose. BSU, however, the Utes would have no excuse when the actually lose. The only hope the Utes would have of beating BSU would be if BSU's QB handed the game much like Hall handed the Utes the game. The Utes should be praying they don't see BSU because even if they do win, they were supposed to. No, the Utes only hope for a win is to play a lowly team from the ACC or Big East.

Utah-Boise = BCS concession | 5:41 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Such a matchup would be like the big money boys throwing a bone to the non-BCS little guys and render the Fiesta bowl as the least and most meaningless of the BCS bowls.

Utah needs to play the highest ranked BCS conference team available-hopefully someone like Texas.

A win against Boise means nothing-while a win against Texas or even Ohio State would make the MWC much more viable in the ultimate long-term BCS automatic qualifying battle.

Boise does not deserve a BCS bowl this year.
Realist | 5:50 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Utan man. Don't be so eager. You say Utah would beat BSU by 50? Maybe so, but I doubt it. However, the reverse could happen. Texas could beat Utah by 50. Be careful what you whish for. Go Broncos
I'm All For The MWC | 6:04 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
The flag bearer for the MWC is UTAH, it should be TCU, congrats to the Utes! I hope they do well in representing the MWC however no matter which bowl game they play they will come home with a loss. I just hope it is not embarassing.
Outsider | 6:04 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Utah Mann, You are starting sound like a BYU fan. BSU would give Utah all it could handle since the game would be played on a neutral field. Utah would have to show it can play BIG time football away from home.
TV Rating | 6:05 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
BYU would have a better rating on tv than any non bcs schools.
UTE Fan in MS | 6:48 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
TV Rating: You lost to Utah, get over it!. BYU isn't going to a BCS game. Utah needs to play a Texas team or their equivalent, or they haven't proved anything all year. Beating a team like Texas would help the MWC and the WAC. BSU win over OK. helped, but many see that win as a fluke. Utah winning helps all the teams in the small market areas.
Belly Up To The Challenge | 6:52 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Boise would be a lousy match.
A win would not enhance Utah's reputation and a loss would hurt a lot.

If Utah hopes to improve its status it needs to BEAT an SEC or Big12 BCS bowl opponent.
(Ohio St or USC won't do)
DennyG | 6:58 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Hey TV RATING:
That is possibly the silliest thing I have ever read. What on earth would make you say such a thing?
Utah alum | 7:05 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Most likely BCS bowl matchups

National Championship:
Oklahoma vs Florida/Alabama winner

Rose:
USC vs Penn State (boring)

Fiesta:
Texas vs Ohio State (boring)

Sugar:
Utah vs Alabama/Florida loser (potential blowout)

Orange:
Cincinnati vs BC/Va Tech winner (least exciting)
USC | 7:38 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Utah has zero chance of playing USC; for the Trojans, it's Rose Bowl or bust.

TV ratings will give Ohio State the final at-large BCS bid instead of Boise State, even though the Broncos are a much more exciting team.

The best possible matchups would be:

Fiesta: Utah vs. Texas
Sugar: Boise State vs. Alabama
Orange: Va Tech vs Cinn
Rose: USC vs Penn State
NC: Florida vs Oklahoma
BSU | 7:40 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Boise State would run all over the U. The U doesn't want this game because they would get killed.
Beat a Ranked BCS team | 7:43 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
For all the talk about Utah they have not beaten a ranked BCS. And please don't say Michigan was a big win, my nephew's pop warner team could have beat Michigan this year. Not your fault sometimes schedules don't are quirky but still not a quality win. How can you say that Utah would be Boise by 50 when:

A)History has shown they have never beaten Boise

B)Utah has no wins against ranked BCS opponents.

C) BSU went into Oregon at Oregon and defeated the Ducks

I won't say BSU would stomp all over Utah but it would definately be an exciting game. Be careful about playing texas you might find yourself down 30 by half. Nothing against Utah but Texas is for real.
:):):):):):) | 7:52 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Utah would lose big to Boise state. Johnson played the perfect game against the Y. He won't do it again.
Big Team | 7:59 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Give us a big team to beat. It will show once and for all we are legit.
RE "Beat a Ranked BCS team" | 8:08 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
What are you talking about? Wins against TCU (still ranked and BCS eligible), and BYU (still ranked)count for something. Oregon State is still ranked. Michigan was ranked when the Utes played them.

BSU beat the utes on a down year. BSU beat a wounded Oregon team without a quarterback by a few points. Join a real conference and play some real teams. Then we can talk.

The Utes have heart. They are for real!
Boise not great | 8:14 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Boise folks please don't comment. You'd lose to Utah or BYU or TCU. Just hope you don't draw any of those teams.
Boise St. | 8:15 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
I'm a BYU fan and I would love to see Utah play Boise St. Utah would put a serious beat down on Boise St. and send the overrated donkeys back to Idaho with their tails between their legs. Boise St. would be a fourth place team in the MWC this year. Hopefully if Boise doesn't make the BCS they will play TCU and get a beat down by the second place team in the MWC.
Question | 8:22 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
I do not understand the notion that BSU beat Oregon with a wounded quarterback. Oregon started the game with Masoli the same quarterback who is starting now, BSU took him out of the game. How is that wounded? You are correct wins against TCU and BYU do count for something but they are not BCS teams. (not part of a BCS conference). And please check the rankings Oregon State is not ranked. I believe they just got whipped by Oregon last Saturday.
Utah? | 8:34 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
You people have never beaten a quality, top ranked team. You play in a pathetic conference. Name the last time you beat a team that FINISHED in the top 10 rankings or who finished nr 1 in their BCS conference...
Southern Utah | 8:37 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
I will be cheering for the Utes whoever they play. However, if it's Boise State, I don't think any amount of cheering will help the Utes win that game.
Re: TV Ratings | 8:42 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Who cares?

BYU has lost 2 and is going to get the wonderful Poinsetta Bowl.

DO SOME RESEARCH | 8:45 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
For all of you that think Utah would beat boise maybe you should do some research... you would find out that in 06 boise came to utah and was 7 point underdogs-the result was a 33-3 beat down on utah. There is no way that boise would be fourth in the MWC- boise is 12-0 against the MWC. I hope that we wind up facing someone from the mountain west so we can shut you guys up.
12-0 | 8:53 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Against MWC teams in down years. If Boise played MWC teams week after week they would be a 3rd or 4th place team year after year. Utah, BYU, and TCU would have been undefeated with Boise's schedule this year.
OREGON QB! | 9:00 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
The Oregon QB that beat Oregon State is the same QB that was in when BSU beat OREGON at OREGON!!!! You guys are doing the same thing to BSU that the rest of the country does to the MWC.

When are you going to realize that you need to cheer for Mid-Major teams to show dominance everywhere? That is the only way that you are going to get the BCS to even look your way. The win at the Fiesta Bowl against OU was huge, and the MWC people should have been crying foul that BSU did not get the National Title. Because, if BSU did not get it that year, no one has a prayer of getting it from the MWC. And please do not tell me that tradition is on the MWC side, outside of the MWC the rest of the country could not tell you the difference between the WAC and MWC. In fact, most of the BYU tradition was when they were in the WAC.

Grow up and cheer for all the mid majors, including Ball St. If Utah plays anyone but Boise St. I will be cheering them on to smash whomever they play.
Mike has lost it | 9:00 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Mike, Mike, Mike. Feeling a little under the weather today? Cause, we all know you are kidding or sick. Right? BSU-Utah?? Talk about the slam of all slam's...it would not only be painful to watch (Utes lose to BSU and we have to hear from the WAC fans for another year) it would be denegrating to both conferences. Think about what you missed, Mike. If Utah gets to play in a major bowl twice in 90 years, at least they should play someone from the Big Ten, Big 12, SEC or the PAC'thetic' 10. At least have them play and destroy a lowly ACC or Big East team, but please, please, please NOT a WAC team. Think about this Mikey boy, the ONLY outcome from a BSU/UofU matchup would be a throw away bowl game and slam by the BCS conglomerate of anti-trust moneymongers. No value. No reward. No benefit other than dollars. No one will care or watch.

You missed it Mike. BSU should be invited to a BCS game, but not against Utah. If not invited, they should play TCU or BYU in San Diego. THAT game will pull more national attention than the other scenario.
Forrest | 9:03 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
USC: Ditto that. Those would be good games.
Big 12 Fan | 9:15 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Boise State accomplished one thing this year that BYU couldn't. They actually defeated everyone on their schedule. Utah when was the last time you beat Boise State? Maybe you should schedule them instead of Weber State. BYU, how did that home and home series with Boise State work for you? You are both willing to travel to Logan yet that trip to Boise isn't on your radar. Texas would beat BSU, Utah, BYU and TCU by a minimum of four touchdowns (depending on how long their starters played). Texas beat Oklahoma and look what Oklahoma did to TCU. I hope Texas doesn't have to play Utah as the last thing Texas needs is another pre season game.
Talk is cheap | 9:19 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
All you trash-talkin' "BCS experts" need to watch BSU play. They beat folks on the field, not just in the computer rankings. Did you see the look on the faces of Fresno St. the other night? It was the same look that BSU gave Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl........dumbfounded disbelief.

Utah deserves a BCS bowl, and I hope that Utah doesn't play BSU in a bowl. That would give us podunk Westerners twice the exposure on National TV, and twice the opportunity to give those elitist BCS conferences a smackdown.

Talk is cheap, let's play ball.
huh | 9:21 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
It seems the mountain west must of had alot of down years to never of beaten boise state in 12 attemps.
BSU...What? | 9:29 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Boise St may be undefeated against the MWC, but...who have they played this year besides Oregon? Your schedule is WEAK! Oregon has been in and out of the rankings all year. Granted they beat Oregon St, but Oregon St beat USC, it is a wash. Boise doesn't deserve to play in a BCS bowl this year. Utah would beat them, and Utah deserves to be among the BCS teams. Utah doesn't want Texas, they would get killed! Our only hope is to get Bama, otherwise, the Utes will only come home with a victory against the Big 10, Big East or ACC.
ALL BOISE FANS | 9:30 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Untill Boise can line up and play smash mouth football I will not be impressed. If you have to use all of your tricks and gadget plays to Win in the WAC you cannot be that good!
BYU Down | 9:36 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
BYU was the MWC champs during one of those "down" years that BSU beat them.
Sour Grapes | 9:38 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Poor Boise State fans, the WAC is weak and no matter the arguments they will always be second fiddle to an undefeated MWC team.
That being said if Utah draws Texas they are probably going to be 21 point dogs and it would be the same with Florida. Bama would be huge favorites as well and watching these teams this year and Utah they have zero percent chance of winning though I'd love to be wrong.
I'd like to see them play Cinci or Boise though it won't happen. Can always hope for a miracle.
Reality | 10:08 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
The reality of the BCS is this:

Once the "1 v 2" matchup is set, the BCS allows the Bowl Committees to select whom they want out of the pool of 12. Bowl committees look at who will fill their hotels, restaurants, stadium, etc. It is all about the money. A team like Ohio State will always get the nod--they have one of the largest alumni associations, a history of traveling well, and a history of spending over the holidays. Boise State and Utah can't even match half of what OSU can do. Utah gets the automatic bid. That is all that the BCS will do.
Alter | 10:09 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Utah should hope for Cin,/VTech, or Boise State or even Missouri. Texas, Alabama and Florida are at a higher level this year. Texas also has a huge chip on their shoulder because they be OU in a great game and without a Missouri upset they will be shut out of the 1,2 game.

Remember Utah has not played a team the caliber of the big guys. Their only significant win away from RES is Air Force. We should be careful what we wish for. We do not want a 2007 Hawaii comparison.
Hope for Boise | 10:09 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Because Texas, Alabama or Florida will humuliate Utah and the Ute football program, and expose the MWC. The longer that the nation doesn't know how weak the conference is the better.
Cotton Bowl repeat | 10:09 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
This sounds alot like when BYU was passed over and went to the Cotton Bowl. Perhaps Boise State has a shot at going to Dallas.
Re: Utah? | 10:22 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
I'm sorry, but your comment is completely asenine. Utah has played and beaten quality opponents; admittedly, Utah has not beaten a top-ranked team i.e. a number 1 ranked team, but c'mon, how many other teams can make such a claim? Likewise, most schools aren't going to be able to claim to have beaten a team that finished first in its BCS conference either, that's why that team finished in first place. And if that is your measure of a good football team, then Iowa must be a great team and deserves to be in a BCS bowl game because they beat Penn State. Get real dude!
Ute Fan is annoying | 10:23 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
This is why all the Ute fans bother us cougar fans. They are not connected to reality. I would rather play Texas in the Fiesta- are you freaking kidding me. You will get drilled by 50. You got lucky vs o-st,TCU and New mexico and you think you can play vs Texas. Ute fan has an awfully short memory, they were all wanting BJ to be benched in the Ost game and Whit fired after last year and now bring on Texas. You are annoying because you no show when your team is 7-5, and when they are 12-0 now you have the greatest fan base in the country. Its a tired act, turn the page - go play VA tech, get a win for all of the non bcs's out there and feel fortunate that you are where you are, and dont forget to mail TCU's kicker a christmas card and thank him for the gift. Thats right you didnt beat them, they beat themselves and now you think you can play with Texas......Please!
BOISE STATE | 10:23 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
If Utah does end up playing BSU then I suspect Boise State by 14. BYU is really not all that. I have seen every Utah game and every BSU game for the last 10 years or so. Utah is a good team but not a great team. Boise State has proven to be a great team in the wrong conference. UTAH beat New Mexico 13-10 - New Mexico barely beat New Mexico State. New Mexico State lost to Boise State 49-0. I think Utah needs to hope they don't play BSU because they will be prove their conference to be wanna-be BCS crushers. Numbers talk.
Just a Prediction | 10:25 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Urban Meyer turned his BCS run into gold - really turned it into gold with his success down there in Florida - now its Coach Whittingham's turn.

There are some high profile colleges potentially needing coaches - remember Urban was suppossed to go to Notre Dame, before he chose Florida.

Well guess what? Notre Dame just might still need a coach?

Whitt is a smart guy - a Notre Dame type school comes knocking, especially with MILLIONS of dollars to offer, he's gone.

Whether you admit it or not, the guy is very hot property right now - don't be surprised if he doesn't go for something bigger and better - I know I'll be surprised if I see him here after around Jan. 6th or so!
Wouldnt it be sweet | 10:28 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
If Boise State somehow played TCU in a bowl game
and
BYU played Oregon State in the vegas bowl...
Then all this talk about how great Boise is would go away (cuz TCU is legit, they loss to two teams that will be ranked in the top 5 come years end) and BYU will get shutdown at their second home and all this talk about how the Utah win over the Beavers was luck would vanish.
Why do zoobie fans and BSU fans find it reasonable to bash on the Utes for what they have done so far and not want them to play a team like Texas? That would only help the smaller conference guys... just cuz it aint you doesnt mean you should hate it...
We ALL cheared for BSU when they played Oklahoma... why is this any different?
LOU | 10:33 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Does anyone realize that the Utes could have been playing for the National Championship if it were not fore a bone-headed move by the athletic department?

Yes, the Utes.

The Utes had Texas on their schedule for this year a few years ago. It was a 3-game series. With an upset of the Longhorns and Texas in the National title hunt, the Utes would be right there.

Instead, we cancelled on them because "we had to make room" for TCU. Which was bogus. It didn't make sense because we then scheduled Weber State a few weeks later.

Then last year we added Michigan to the schedule for the 12th game. Make room for TCU was a big excuse. I don't know if it was Chris Hill or Urban Meyer who nixed the game, but they are surely regretting that decision now.

What a shame! Oh...what could have been?

Great season though...GO UTES!
Donk Fans are Delusional | 10:35 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
BSU fans love to live in the past. They brag about beating Utah two years ago. That was two years ago and this is not the same Ute team as two years ago.

At least Utah schedules better than the mighty donkeys from Boise. Utah went to Michigan and won that game and beat a PAC-10 opponent too. Boise's only quality win was Oregon. The rest of their schedule is a joke. BSU's AD hasn't really scheduled any decent BCS opponents for the future either. Look at BSU's future OOC schedule. What a joke. I knew the cupcake scheduling would catch up to them eventually.
Anonymous | 10:53 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Boise is better than Utah but it would do them no good to play each other. They should look to play the best BCS conference team they can and then if they win, they'll actually have something to brag about!
Hey LOU - Annoying Ute fan | 11:12 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
Actually it would have cost them 17 million dollars to play Texas because they would have lost - its just UTE fan being Ute Fan again- Priceless. lou i would bet you left with 2 minutes left in the game against o st like everyone else. Now youre a believer and why? because TCU's kicker cant make a chip shot. And Utah Fan is an embarrasment to college football, Ruching the field when you beat Ost and were 8.5 point favorites - very nice!!!
Need More Luck | 11:17 a.m. Dec. 1, 2008
The Utes got lucky twice this year and I hope happens again. TCU was the best team in the MWC and they are out of the picture. BYU was able to move the ball at will against the Utes and if it wasn't for turnovers, would have been in it at the end and possibly spoiled 12-0. As much as I would like to see the Utes win a big game against a Florida or Texas, I don't think it will happen. This year the MWC has three and maybe four teams that should be between 10 and 25. Very respectable but no top 10 team to beat Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Penn State, Texas Tech. They would beat Boise, and maybe Ohio State.

MWC
10 - TCU
13- Utah
18- BYU
25- Air Force

WAC
15- Boise
