Dick is right, don't rate them until they are in a uniform and playing good ball for you. Players are changing schools all the time even after committing and starting classes.
The classic example is Ben Olson. Does anyone even remember him? He was supposed to be the greatest. He is finishing his career on the bench. Okay, he got injured, but the question is whether he would even have been BYU's starting QB now.
pointless article | 12:35 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
how can you compare offensive lineman to wrs and qbs, and rank them on that kind of scale. I don't get how you can claim who is number 1 or who is number 32 when they haven't even arrived on campus yet! that's just what I think though.
Provo | 2:23 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
I am sure the Y will get the majority of 4 and 5 star recruits from California and Texas and some from Florida. Folks do not realize how much talent that the Y has and which is why we should win the NC numerous times in the upcoming seasons.

Re: pointless article | 2:54 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Did you even read the article? They have many ways of ranking players.
Joey | 4:56 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
These rankings surprise me, because both Scout and Rivals have James Aiona listed as the best player in this class, BAR NONE. He is the only player from this class who could play for any team in the country, and the only 5 star.
Don't worry | 7:10 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
if Mendenhall can't recruit them he can always steal them from other universities or out of mission fields.
It doesn't matter | 8:03 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Who the two schools recruit. The coaches at Utah are far better and will get the most out of whoever they get. Especially when the players are far more athletic. It doesn't matter how raw and unpolished they are when they arrive, speed can't be taught.

"Fetters rates Ute-bound lineman Jones from Jordan the best offensive lineman in the state in the class of 2009 behind Cottonwood's 6-3, 270-pound John Martinez and Timpview's 6-5, 285-pound Xavier Sua'Filo"

How can Jones be "the best offensive lineman in the state" If he is BEHIND Martinez and Xavier???

You might try reading your own stuff Dick. Because your lack of proofreading makes it hard for the rest of us to understand what you are trying to say.

Again!
Re: Provo | 8:25 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Bahahahaha NC talks again? I thought your thrashing by two legit top ten teams this year would abolish those talks.. silly me for underestimating cougar-nation. Unless BYU recruited sheer speed like Utah and TCU do, I don't see you cracking the TOP 3 in the conference for the next decade, but keep telling yourself, "next year."

oes anyone realize that the Utes could have been playing for the National Championship if it were not fore a bone-headed move by the athletic department?

Yes, the Utes.

The Utes had Texas on their schedule for this year a few years ago. With an upset of the Longhorns and Texas in the National title hunt, the Utes would be right there.

Instead, we cancelled on them because "we had to make room" for TCU. Which was bogus. It didn't make sense because we then scheduled Weber State a few weeks later. Then last year we added Michigan to the schedule for the 12th game. Make room for TCU was a big excuse. I don't know if it was Chris Hill or Urban Meyer who nixed the game, but they are surely regretting that decision now.

What a shame! Oh...what could have been?

Great season though...GO UTES!

It just gets worse and worse. People keep trying to paint everything blue.

Who did you say evaluated the new Kittens and Papooses? Did they say he was associated with the U of Washington?

My, isn't that an auspicious group, DH and a Husky Musher. YOu know they (The Dogs) had to go to OT to lose the Apple Cup to the second worst team in the PAC 10. This guy probably helped evaluate their talent too.

I think this "evaluator" must be grading on the Cougar Curve. The BYU game was the second closest thing the Dogs had to a win this year. You know when you put on the Blue glasses, everything does appear blue.

Well, you have to take this article with a grain of salt. No, not a grain, how about a 50# bag, and a little pepper, and oregeno. Now cook @ 400 for about 3.5 hours, and you might be able to eat this turkey.

I don't think I can swallow it.

We've got Krueger for 2 more years, that's good enough for me.

TC | 9:11 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Ute fans that think speed wins games... it's actually execution. Speed is nice to have (and BYU rarely has it) but if you can't execute your assignments it doesn't really matter. I think BYU beat Utah and TCU last year with the same lack of speed as they had this year. Utah and TCU just executed better... and that what good teams do.

I would take the slow, white guy, Austin Collie, for my team anytime/anyday over anybody (speed or no speed) that Utah or TCU has on their team. Austin is "fast enough" but he executes (run's great routes, makes good decisions, and is a fundamentally sound football player) his assignments better than anyone in the MWC.

Utah should know that it really isn't speed that wins football games. TCU has significantly more speed that Utah, yet Utah was able to overcome that by executing (that's something the TCU kicker wasn't able to do.) So Utes, just keep executing... because whoever you face in a BCS bowl is most likely going to have more speed and athleticism than Utah.

Dear Lou | 9:15 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Be careful of what you wish for. Texas would have gladly played Utah and taken all the BCS money coming the Utes way. It isn't whether you win or lose. It is how you play the game. College football, unfortuately, is big business and the Utes/MWC are getting that money this year. Thank goodness it isn't going to Boise State and the WAC.
re: lou | 9:18 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
The yoots dropped Texas because they knew Texas was going to be really good and added Michigan because they knew Michigan's program was going in the toilet and could be beaten by a team like yootah or even Toledo.

Hill is really glad now that he dropped Texas from the schedule because your precious little yoots would have lost 65-17 and would have to root for Boise to win one for the little guys in a BCS bowl game this year.

I'm hoping the yoots get to play a legit BCS bowl team this time instead of a weak patsy like '04 Pitt who would have finished 5th if they were in the MWC. The yoots have played a number of weak bowl opponents over the years which has nicely padded their bogus bowl win record.

Re: Vegas Ute | 9:27 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Are you trying to convince everyone how bad BYU is? So, you're bad mouthing Washington and the PAC-10 while you're at it?

OK, let's say you convinced me. BYU was bad. Washington was bad. The PAC-10 was bad (so beating Oregon State shouldn't count for anything.) Michigan was horrible. Let's see, you beat Weber State (how good are they?) And then Utah State (another power house?) And then you beat the rest of the MWC teams... pretty much the same as BYU - except you beat TCU.

So, by convincing me how lousy BYU is - you're telling me that Utah is a top ten team by virtue of beating only one good team (TCU - and that was as close as a game can get) all season? So, Ute fans, by telling the country how bad BYU is, doesn't do much for your case of considering yourself one of the nations elite. BYU was the second best team you beat all year. So if you think BYU was horrible... then you really only beat one good team all year - that doesn't convince me that you're top ten.
Re: Hall just threw another pick | 9:35 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
We don't play for money at BYU. If you think college football is about money, then keep sending the checks. We play for championships at BYU. Conference championships are nice (you got yours this year) but national championships are the pinnacle of college football. So Utes, keep the checks coming... in fact, don't put them in the mail, please hand deliver them. While you're at it, you can walk by the trophy case and look at that national championship trophy in the BYU trophy case.

Everything else you can get with Visa/Mastercard.

Regards, Your Daddy, The COUGARS.

From Vegas Ute:

The sense of it: Dick Harmon asked a recruiting expert associated with U of W to evaluate new recruits.

Why would anybody think anything or anybody associated with arguably the worst program in CF would have credentials sufficient for evaluating any football talent? The evaluator obviously had no talent evaluating the players for U of W.

Turkey refers to the dumbest of all birds and the article.

I am so glad that bronco is the coach of BYU. He is clearly the best coach in the state. He took over a horrible team with many problems and has completly turned them around. If Kyle took over the mess bronco took over he would be out of a job right now. MWC Titles since bronco and Kyle arrived
BYU=2
Utah=1
TCU=1
Thanks for asking
Utah??? Again | 9:54 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Also dont talk to me about BCS because kyle has done that once, and they will get destryoed this year. I will gladley take consistant MWC championships and 10-11 win seasons consistatly rather than 8-4 seasons with one BCS game throw in the mix every 4th or 5th year. Bronce clearly a man of more class, and better coaching.
Conference champs | 10:15 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
I'm a BYU fan. I'm not caught up in who the best coach is in the conference. BYU, Utah, and TCU all have great coaches. I would add Air Force and New Mexico to that list also (even though Rocky Long is hanging it up.)

Utah is the conference champion. Give them the respect and recognition they deserve. They beat several great football teams this year (BYU, TCU, Oregon State) and won at Michigan also. Then they beat all the teams they were supposed to beat.

As long as the coaches remain at BYU, Utah, and TCU I expect that these programs will continue to compete for the conference championship year after year for the next decade. I would expect that we'll see 2, or maybe all 3, be ranked in the top 25 for the next several years.

BYU was never "horrible." Washington... that's horrible. I hope Kyle isn't really considering that job. They're all good coaches. I'm glad we have them in the MWC.
Utah???Spelling | 10:17 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Its spelled BRONCO you idiot!!!!
Re: Utah??? Again | 10:28 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
I'm a BYU fan. But please, Bronco "clearly" a man of more class and better coaching?? Bronco and Kyle are both great coaches - I wouldn't put one over the other. And as far as class... they are both at the top! How do you get better than that?

two conference championships doesn't make "consistent." As far as what I prefer... 10-11 win seasons and back-to-back conference championships? or conference championships in 2004 and 2008 with undefeated seasons and BCS bowl bids? hmmmm.. even as a BYU fan - I think I'd prefer the latter.

But, I'll still take a national championship once every fifty years over BCS bowl games every 4-5 years.

Give the Utes and Kyle their credit. They were "clearly" better than BYU this year and they were "clearly" the class of the MWC this year. I'm sure this isn't the end of it - they will still be playing college football next year and everyone will get their shot at a MWC championship and BCS game again.

I think that was for emphasis about the correct way to spell his name. I guess for the slow people reading this, it could have been B-R-O-N-C-O. Always nice that the spelling police are alive and well. I think the Y could take the conference in a spelling bee.
Bronco | 11:47 a.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Who Names their Kid Bronco anyway? What a Stupid Name. Good Coach that will win MWC Championships and Lose 1 or 2 games along the way and never get to the BCS because BYU won't go undefeated.
Lavell was not that Great a Coach, He surrounded himself with Great Coaches and that made him a Genius by doing so. Can you name more great Asst. Coaches at BYU under Lavell at another School? Nope, He had a Great Knack for getting the best to Coach for him. He would have run a great company as a CEO because his ego would not have got in the way by hiring better people than himself to make things happen.

I agree with Provo. Coach Bronco Mendenhall should win numersous national championships.
He won't lose another recruit he targets AND the top recruits will pursue byu.
That secondary of byu's in truly 2nd to none. The speed and tackling ability in the LB, corners and safties is truly amazing.
And let's not even mention the offense.
The best is yet to come indeed!

I'm just going to enjoy our 13-0 record. Say what you want zoobies... You would give anything to be in the same place. Your quest is our reality. Wait till next year right!!! Until I see BYU getting 5 star DB's I will not worry.
NorCalBlue | 12:38 p.m. Nov. 27, 2008
I'm a true blue BYU fan, that said until we get defensive players with speed we will have to be lucky to win the MWC outright. The conference is moving in the direction where speed rules.

I'm sick and tired of the soft play by DB's and safeties - why do they play that way becasue they lack the speed to man up.

We will win the majority of the games becasue of our offense but we will not contend for a BCS game until we improve our Defense. I'm begining to think that Bronco needs to hire a D co-ordinator and become the adminsitrator that Lavell was.

Surround your self with quality coaches, young men who excellant student athletes with character, talent and speed. Provide great coaching. We have the facilities to match anyone. Bronco has made great strides and I'm looking forwards to his impact in the years to come.

The BYU vs Utah game will continue to be a great game. Hats off to the Utes - this year they out executed the Cougs. Next year they come to our house, perhaps with a new coach. Fall 2009 can't come too soon!

GO MWC Bowl teams!

The scheduling did not work out between Utah and Texas because Utah had to make room for TCU. We could not reschedule Texas because they only had a home date open which means Utah would have played 7 road games and 5 home games.
Seattle | 2:55 p.m. Nov. 27, 2008
If BYU ever does decide to actually "recruit" a player I hope they go after a few DB's with some size and speed. Makes me wonder about the DB's who committed to BYU already. Hopefully, they quality players who were "referred" to BYU by a good high school coach.

Same is true for the linebacker from Hawaii (Teo). He may not get "recruited" by BYU but I hope he feels wanted just the same.

Oh by the way, there appears to be plenty of players "open" at BYU and Utah, it just makes a big difference on who you throw the ball to. Lets hope Hall will work on that head fake and turnowver ratio.

Ute Fans,

I believe the comment posted by PROVO was in jest. BYU fans are aware that very FEW 4/5 Star Recruits come to BYU from CA, TX and FL. In fact, very few 4/5 Star Recruits come to BYU at all (or UTAH for that matter). Even the local 4/5 Stars generally go to BCS Schools (Ngata, Havili).

It is a tribute to the coaches at BYU and UTAH that they compete very well with 3 Star Recruits.

Lastly, had UTAH played Texas this season, they would not be undefeated. You should be very grateful for your schedule, it more than talent or coaching put you where you are.

This just goes to show how foolish the zoobs are. If you play for national championships then every season in history, except 84 has been a failure, and will continue to be one because unless you bust the bcs like utah has, you have NO chance, that is ZERO chance, NADA, ZILCH, ZERO, NONE, etc of EVER winning a national championship!

Funny you never hear Utah fans bringing up the 1944 National Championship in Basketball. Yet everytime a cougar fan cannot win an argument they automatically revert back to 1984. OK Uncle Rico, back in 84 you won a National Championship, congratulations! It is now 2008, the landscape has changed, and it is no longer possible to sneak in the back door and win a National Championship by beating a 6-5 team. Maybe what you people need to do is order equipment to make a time machine on the internet so you can go back to 1984. If you dont have the money you can go door to door selling plastic cookwear. Oh and by the way, in 2008, Kruger is still open and Maxie just threw another interception!

What would be really interesting is to look at the lists scout.com and rivals.com put out three or four years ago and see what happened to all the highly touted players from those classes. I've usually found that at least 1/3 of them wash out and some of the best players turn out to be players that didn't even show up on these lists.
