All's well in Zion, right? But don't worry, "the economy is fundamentally strong." Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha hahahahahaha, I can't quit laughing over the gullibility of the right-wing Republicans that live in our state. Haven't had enought yet?
Here we go again! | 2:51 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Oh Right, let's blame it on the Mormons!!!! We're the cause of everything that's not working. And maybe you could blame us for all the wrong decisions that have been made in the white house - that's our fault too. I don't believe anyone said "all's well in zion" but you Cougar Blue - Cougar bored!
Come on | 3:11 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I thought the government would have fixed this problem by now. I'm counting on them to take care of me cradle to grave.
Cougar Blue - You must be talking about your liberal buddies because I don't know a single conservative in this state who thinks all is well in Zion. What flavor of kool aid you been drinking?

We elect Obama/Biden and their socialist agenda and this recession slides into a depression.....Jimmy Carter's administration all over again.
Re:Here we go again! | 3:19 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Well, you can't argue that Utah is one of the strongest Republican states, has overwhelmingly supported Bush and his policies, and are going for more of the same with McCain. So why not be the party of personal responsibility that you claim to be and take responsibility for the mess we're in. It's yours, so claim it.

I'm Mormon, but I live in Colorado. Though I don't share his jubilance, I agree with Cougar Blue. In my interactions with LDS people here in Colorado, it's a lot the same. In discussions of politics or the economy, most haven't even got a clue about what's going on, what's real, and what isn't. They don't think for themselves and vote strict republican. That having been said, the democrats all over the nation are pretty much the same - look who they're willing to put in office. Unbelievable!

Cougar Blue: Hope you have three months cash on hand to meet your family's needs. Hope you have food to eat when you can't buy any in the store. Hope you have enough water when the time comes. Hope you have blankets and shelter when the times comes. Hope you know some right-wing Republicans who have all of those things in place so they can rescue your sorry ass...when the time comes.

"We elect Obama/Biden and their socialist agenda and this recession slides into a depression.....Jimmy Carter's administration all over again....."
....because of the last 12 years of mismanagement by greedy neo cons.
It's going to take longer than one presidential cycle to get out of this.
however, Obama's victory will give people all over the world hope that this country, after years of being run by frat boys, is in good hands again. So it might not be as rough of a decade coming up as it could be - esp if we were somehow dumb enough to elect Bush 3 and his lap dog, Palin.

Cougar Blue so you are exempt from all of the hardships that are befalling the nation and the world, right wing republicans, et al?

Who voted for W | 4:16 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
It's amazing how hard it is to find somebody who voted for W. I know there must be somebody out there who voted for him.

Both parties tend to be clueless. And a majority of Americans do little thinking. They tend to blame everything on partisan politics.
Democrats gave us the Community Reinvestment Act in 1977 and modified by another Democrat in 1995. This cause the share of bad loans (subprime) on the books of banks to go from less than 5% to over 20%.
Subprime mess, Democrat problem.
Fractional banking allows you to take one dollar in value, hold onto 10% and lend out the other 90%. Thus for every $1 dollar in reserve you can have $9 in loans. That sounds good but all it takes is one of those loans worth $1 to go bad and it wipes out the $1 in reserve you had.
This fractional banking was given to us by the Democrats. Risky but it has worked.
The Republicans were pathetic enough to change the reserve requirement from 10% to 2.5%!!!
Thus with 0.25$ in reserve a bank could lend $9.75! All you need is $0.25 of bad loans and the reserve is whiped out!
Combine the two, current meltdown.
Both parties share same idiotic level of blame.
Anything less, you're part of the problem. Enough blind partisanship.

I though this bi-partisan bailout was suppose to fix the credit market?
And if you thought it would I am more than happy to sale you oil rights in Utah Lake. I'll even sell you off-shore oil rights in the Great Salt Lake!
This is doomed to failure. The Editorial Board got it right when they compared this to FDR's fiddling with the markets back in 1933.
If you read the economic history (very different then the regular history books) of the Great Depression you will see that the biggest cause of economic duress was that of government "solutions" that made everything much, much worse.
My biggest concern is that the economics became so rough, the strain so great that it lead to World War Two. I certainly hope we don't have another world war ten years from now due to governmental intervention that hightened market allocation disparity.

Layoffs coming ?? | 4:22 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
if you work for a public company whose products are not considered necessities (such as utilities or health care) you had better update your resume because layoffs are most certainly on the horizon. Everyone needs electric or gas for their homes so working for QWestar or PacificCorp is recession safe. Everyone has health care needs regardless of the economy so IHC is probably a safe bet too. However if you work for a company that produces a product that most people or companies can do without (in a pinch) then watch out!!
You are not me | 4:22 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
What kind of electorate is about to vote into office a candidate whose only qualification is he's not Bush? We'd better hope the economy is only headed into a recession and not worse.

BOTH Obama and McCains' shenanigans will only make this worse! Make your vote count and vote for a third party candidate. No, I'm not recommending anybody in particular, just imploring people not to keep sending the politicians the message that they can get away with ANYTHING!
Here's the reality: Unless something MAJOR happens, Obama WILL be elected. But - Utah voters will vote overwhelmingly for McCain.
Since simple logic shows that McCain will get beat anyway, why not send a message to the 2 major parties that it WILL NOT be business as usual from this point forward.
The two main parties draw closer and closer together with their dogma every year. Neither one really acts liberal, and neither one really acts conservative. Both of the parties will set this country back until a third party becomes viable and makes them STAND FOR SOMETHING!

Eliminate Stupidity | 4:42 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
First, we're all acting like a bunch of sheep. Last Monday, SELL! SELL! Then on Friday, BUY! BUY! Then today, SELL! SELL! C'mon, people, THINK! Panic doesn't solve anything. Look, the Arabs jacked up oil prices and put a crimp on our economy. Then, because a bunch of low-lifes in California overpaid for their homes down there, we all have to suffer? I guess so.
Second, if you think GW Bush and the Republicans are solely to blame for this, you are hopelessly partisan and/or completely mis-informed. Do me a favor. Before you comment on this board again, PLEASE Google the following - Keating Five, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi, Bill Clinton. Five minutes on wikipedia and you will know that the Democrats are far from innocent on this one.
Third, Utah's economy is actually not bad. Compare it to Washington where all of the leaders are Democrats - the highest bankruptcy rate in the U.S., double the national average for foreclosures, high taxes. All with Boeing, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. HQ'd in the state. It ain't workin' any better in the Blue States, folks!
Please educate yourself before you comment on here. Thanks.

Governmental attempts to "rescue" the economy remind me of the Simpson's episode where Homer steps into quicksand and while sinking ever so slowly, with his hands and arms immersed in the sand says, "Okay, I'll just pull myself out with my face."
After the commercial break Homer was out of the quicksand and none the worse for the wear. This isn't TV. There are no commercials interruptions; the present economic mess won't soon get any better no matter who is elected.

What About Big Business? | 4:49 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Irregardless of laws passed by different administrations in past years, where's the oversight for the corruptness that has been taken place in all big business operations? Please start naming me the big companies that have operated fisacally sound and honest please people, I personnally don't know any. Now don't start with our utility companies please! I want to know who they are and what they do.
Reality Check | 5:00 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Ok, the blame EVERYTHING on Bush and the Republicans crowd is out in force again. Hate to burst your bubble but Clinton and Obama are the ones who where forcing banks to lend to people who couldn't repay. Obama loves affirmative action lending. Look up info on Obama and his Acorn buddies and you will find out how much of this mess is his fault. Acorn, with Obamas help as their lawyer, pushed for these bad loans on the ground that the lower income people where being discrimated against. It's kind of funny how Acorn is now blaming the Bush administration. Get a clue.
Re: Big Business | 5:03 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
There are scores of big businesses I can think of who have operated fiscally sound and honest and have not been corrupt. Of course, someone somewhere (a disgruntled employee, and upset customer) may say otherwise, but there are a lot of good companies out there that are having their stock driven down by a handful of idiots. Name you a few? Sure:
McDonald's
Nordstrom
State Farm Insurance
Costco
Starbuck's
Kroger
Jet Blue
Southwest Airlines
Safeway
Les Schwab
Trader Joe's
Target
Wal-Mart
Coca Cola
Pepsi Co.
Procter & Gamble
GE
Boeing
Microsoft
Amazon
E-Bay
Want me to keep going?
Any one of these companies is better managed, has more integrity, and works harder than the government or any government agency.

Using your logic of assigning blame solely to the party in office at the time of the "difficulty" isn’t it frightening to think that Democrats have been in office, and therefore solely responsible for, World War I (Wilson), World War II (Roosevelt), the Korean War (Truman), Viet Nam (Kennedy, Johnson), World War III (Obama)?
So you Dems are going to save us from the mess you Democrats create by again engaging us in global conflict? How very Democrat of you.

I guess I offended the moderator the first time I made a comment. My goodness! Abusive, offensive, off-topic, misrepresentative, etc. that I wrote that the far-right conservative policies of the Bush - Cheney (yes, BYU does love him) steered the country wrongly and couldn't have done it better if they had made "pacts" with Satan. Get real. It's the truth i.e. Gadianton Robbers, 3 Nephi.

Being a Mecca for businesses to find wage slaves, Utah has created many jobs. Utah isn't going to escape.
Re: Big Business | 5:03 p.m. You have never talked to a target employee. :-) They do have cheap toilet paper.
It took working in the private sector to realize what a great job I saw people do working for the government. Businesses are a joke in this country. They take more credit than they deserve. American business will shut down operations daily to replace a chain, one link at a time, to save the cost of buying a new chain.
It's American management that ruined the Auto Industry. They only problem I've had with my Toyota made in America is the American manufactured cover I bought for it.
American business took Compac, HP and Dell computers that were known for quality and turned them into junk.

The drop did not surprise me. All of those who felt they lost on the big fall were selling when it was up. This will drive it down, lets wait and see how much it goes up again tomorrow and those will be the same one buy low and selling high. There is money to be made and it is being done. Don't blame the conservatives that warned us some 3-4 years ago. The last two years have been controlled by the demo's. Can you tell me one piece of comstructive legislation they have passed. Don't use the so called "bail out" because it is not productive, just one more step towards socialism. "Spread the wealth around", be prepared for your neighbor to report you to the feds as having more then him.
Re:Sure | 6:32 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Huh? I've never met one person EVER who left working for government, schools, the post office, etc. for the private sector and toughed it out. It's a much faster pace with much higher expectations.
On the other hand, I've lost plenty of employees to the public sector - always for more money, and they always come back to tell the rest of my employees how much better it is there because they don't have to work very hard.
Case in point - I filled in at the University in my town (I don't live in Utah) and taught an upper level business class. That was on top of my 70 hour a week job. It wasn't that big of a deal and I got great reviews. I got paid $4,000 for doing it. My fellow profs were making $150,000 PLUS and teaching maybe 2 or 3 classes and that was their full-time job. They were angry with me because in the performance reviews, I blew them away. I didn't do anything special - just what I was paid to do.
If you want to delude yourself into thinking most government workers can cut it out here, go for it!
