That is great! I can't wait to cheer on Davies and the rest of the new recruits - BYU has quite the line up!
UNLV | 7:41 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
We will destroy BYU no matter who you recruit!!

re: UNLV | 8:15 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
You mean like the 74-48 pounding of UNLV at the Marriott last year?

Or maybe the 90-63 destruction the year before?

You are welcome to our house any day you'd like to come play.

And please, come again!
good news! | 8:35 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
go Blue - recruiting local talent is a big plus for our high school kids
go Blue! | 8:36 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
thanks for supporting our local sports and seeing their talent. recruiting them gives them encouragement to do their best
re:UNLV | 8:39 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Lets have the tourney in Provo!!!
Too Bad | 9:15 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Hmmm, another recruit who's not interested in winning an NCAA tourney game. Oh well, I'm sure the campus life is great.
Jusr Relaoding Please... | 9:20 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Just scream it out with a great big yes and beat your chest a little bit.....

Coach Rose and his staff have everyright to be feeling good about the BYU program and its future...

With these guys, even I would play the tournament in Las Vegas...

Tradition...Spirit....Honor...

This is what we are about..............Go Cougars
Diana | 9:40 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I know Brandon. He is a class act! Way to go Brandon! You made an AWESOME decision to go to BYU.
Enough? | 9:49 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I really like most of the guys mentioned in the article, but can we really move on in the NCAA tourney with a utah county high school all-star team? I can't wait to see Haws play...
Jeff | 9:54 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
You can't blame a kid for going to where he will get to play. At Utah State or Utah he would be a utility player at best so good luck Mr. Davies you made the right choice for you. :)
USU | 9:59 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Stew Morrill's system would have been better for his development. I guess if you're used to living in Utah county and don't know any different the decision makes sense.
Ref: Jeff | 10:10 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
That's because all the players at the UofU are utility players. No real talent on that team. As for winning a tourney game, at least the Y gets to go. Same can't be said for utes the last couple of years. Boylen can scream all he wants, and he does a lot of it, but talent will win games. Since the Y is getting all of it, that leaves precious little for utes. GO Cougs!!!
What? | 10:22 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Why would you go to third best program in the state? If the Aggies want offer you have to go there. But he will get to play early at the Y.
CA fan | 10:47 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Good decision to play in a class program. Great education and great environment. Go Cougars.
Lots of Bigs | 10:54 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
We are definitely piling up the centers. We are a run and gun team so hopefully these kids can get out on the break.
Love it | 10:59 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Love the bitterness from the Yewts and little step brother Yewtah St!!!!!!
Hahahahahahahh!!!
GO Davies, GO COUGARS!!!
Aggies | 10:59 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
may NOT the 3rd best program in the state. UVU is coming on strong.
Third Best Program?! | 11:00 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Look at the head to head USU vs BYU and Utah over the past 10 years. Hard to argue with the scoreboard.
re: UNLV | 11:12 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Ah, but you do forget that the score advantage was 44 points before Rose clears the bench and UNLV starters get a little 8-1 run to end the game...

The only reason UNLV has won the Tourney the last two years was because it was played at the T & M Center...any other venue, any other time and the Runnin Rebels are out 1st or 2nd round each year...based on how they played 1st/2nd Round games the past two years. BTW, who exactly did UNLV recruit this year? That's right, the top players in the state chose Reno over UNLV 2/3 times... I guess you overlooked that when you posted?

What? What was that? Let's see, past two years...Utah 0 wins, 4 losses against BYU. Utah 2 wins, 2 losses against USU. BYU/USU don't play. Let's do the remedial math (for the Ute students)...
BYU against USU and UofU 4 wins 0 losses.
USU against BYU and UofU 2 wins 2 losses.
UofU against BYU and USU 2 wins 4 losses.

Energy Solutions arena awaits your visit to confirm your misguidance on the subject of BB, since of course, Huntsman & Marriott Centers have proved Davies wise choice.
Not Enough! | 11:28 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I guess this is the first step, right? Win the local talent recruiting contest in hopes that one day you can add to it with some blue chip all americans from the more competative parts of the country. I reminds me of a High School Basketball Tourneyment in Vegas I attended a few years ago. The Utah all star team was sent home after two games (0-2).
Alternate | 11:31 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Lots of sour grapes here. There are two coaches, one in Salt Lake, and one in Logan, who are very concerned and disappointed that Brandon and Tyler, for that matter, will be playing for Dave Rose and not for them. Fans are fans and sometimes lack class as some of the comments show, but many coaches tried really hard to get these two guys and lost out. These kids really showed their talent on the recent high school circuit, especially at the Las Vegas tournament.
Ernest T. Bass | 11:53 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Disco Stew at USU is by far the better coach for a post player.
Stop the presses !!! | 1:01 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
A kid from Provo ??? Going to BYU ???

Who cares about the economy and the election ....

This is REAL news !!!

<Yawn>
Re:Not Enough | 1:14 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Have you seen Brandon Davies play. Have you followed his Utah AAU team in the summer. Utah Pump N Run. They went to the Final Four in their first tournament in Denver. They lost in the championship game in Las Vegas by one to Pump N Run Elite. Which is coached by Jim Harrick and has the top blue chippers in California.
The last two tournaments of July Brandon averaged over 20pts and 10 rebs. a game
He had interest from Arizona, Arizona state, Cal, Gonzaga, and the entire Mountain West
He is a blue chipper for the entire West
Hey Stop the presses | 1:20 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
You cared enough to read the comments and post one yourself.

Come on, the economy does not effect you. Isn't minimum wage still $5.85, so you have nothing to worry about.

Hurry and jump off that free computer at the library and walk down the street to Burger King and start cleaning the bathrooms.
Re: Not enough | 1:23 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
You might want to actually "watch" the kids that BYU has commitments from before you pop off and sound stupid.

First of all, Haws and Davies are "Blue Chip" talents.

Secondly, an 8th grade team from Utah won the whole Las Vegas tournament last spring. They went 7-0 and beat teams from New York, Texas, California...
UNLV | 2:49 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I must have read your comments wrong. BYU won how many games in the NCAA tournament in the past 8 years? But yet, the program is superior to UNLV? Nice try. If you school was actually in a REAL city, you might be able to host a tournament!!! As far as recruits, we don't recruit in-state just to recruit in-state. We recruit players no matter where they live. No question are recruits are much more coveted over BYU recruits.
UNLV | 3:13 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
The Rebel coaches would love to have every one of those kids who committed to BYU. But they had no chance to get any of them.
UNLV?? | 3:15 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Question, how long have you guys been off NCAA suspension? Are you still getting the best players money can buy? And how will it before you get suspended again? Once a rogue program, always a rogue program.
Re: Not enough | 3:56 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
How can you all really claim he is a blue chip recruit when Utah St. & Cal were the only other schools recruiting him??

Sounds like the "Y" is going to have a really big and most likely slow team in the coming years. I guess that's really nothing new though.
Hey UNLV | 4:46 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Do you have a UNLV degree?

"No question ARE recruits are much more coveted over BYU recruits. "

That hooked on phonics is not working for you. Get your money back.
Mc UNLV | 5:07 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
How many MWC tournaments has UNLV won away from the Thomas & Mack?

It's obvious, the only place the Rebels can beat BYU is in the T&M.

Anybody with any brains knows that if the MWC tournament was played in the Marriott Center, BYU would be dominating the tournament just like the Rebels have on their home court.
Trinity | 5:09 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
re:UNLV
Going back to 1999 when the MWC was born I see UNLV as regular season champion (co champion with Utah) just one time. BYU shows up four times (two outright and two co champions).

The tournament is a joke because UNLV always gets to play at home. Give BYU a chance to play the tournament in the MC every year and I guarantee UNLV would not be represented very well in the victory column.

UNLV has been mediocre since the days Stacy Augmon left (not sure if he even graduated). That's because Tarkanian got caught paying players with booster money.

Fine tradition there.
Only Cal and USU? | 5:13 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
He had more than a dozen after him, he had just narrowed his choices to three. He went on a visit to Gonzaga but had already scratched them. Every conference in the MWC and most in the PAC 10 wanted him.
Not Enough! | 5:36 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Really? It sounds like in 6 or 7 years that 8th grade Utah basketball class will produce talent that will get BYU deep into March.

All I am saying is that it would be nice to compliment the local Utah talent with some "additional" players from larger markets.

Do you see the pattern? Each year local BYU fans get excited as the cougs recruit a top Utah talent. But that talent has not produced wins against true "blue chip athletes". Memphis, Kansas, UNC, UCLA, Arizona, Duke.
Once again | 5:50 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Utah, UNLV and every other school in the MWC would be elated to get these players. But, they didn't. So there's only one winner here - BYU. The rest lost out.
yes I have | 6:43 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I watch Davies play last year in the state tournament. I am real surprised that the Y signed him. I thought at best he would be a JC player..he had very little range, very slow feet and a soft little hook..but really a blue chip..I don't think so..and as we are talking BYU...they have NO one that can take anyone off the dribble...just zone and play close to the man and anyone should win...sorry but that is how I see it..they have no real speed and the loss of Plaisted will hurt you..
USU/BYU/UTAH | 6:45 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Good pick up for the Y, they will need him Stew has the ability to bring in JUCO players and bring them to the next level. With that said USU and BYU are second rate to Utah in basketball. I am an Aggie all the way but the bottom line is UTAH has won more games in the tourney over the last 10-15. BYU is by far the biggest disappointment because they have consistently had better seeds than USU and have managed to choke out of every tourney that I recall. Even WSU is better than BYU in tourney success. BYU fans please hold the Ainge of 1900 comments, we already know you beat Notre Dame, good job, pat yourselves but you are still under achievers in the modern era. Rose may be a good recruiter but Stew is a better coach, hands down. Should be a good game at the Arena. Go Ags!
Re: UVU coming on strong | 6:51 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
UVU will never get many local kids until there's a coaching change. FYI, the local high school coaches steer their players clear of UVU.
Some Disappointing Comments | 7:33 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I read about this announcement and decided to look at the comments out of curiosity. I agree with "Alternate" that many of these comments are nothing more than sour grapes. Pretty juvenile, to say the least. Sounds like Brandon Davies is happy with his basketball decision and can look forward to the opportunity to get a great education at the same time. I can't imagine why anyone would seriously complain about that, even those who aren't BYU fans.

Yet some of you act like this fellow's decision to go to BYU is devastating news. Very sad. Come on, people, basketball matters a little, but in comparison to life's larger concerns, college basketball is way down the list in terms of importance. Time for some of you to gain some perspective and wish this seemingly fine young man all the best in life.
Aggie | 8:36 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Darn, I was hoping he would choose USU. Well good luck anyway Brandon, I hope things work out for you.
PictureCritic | 8:44 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Was that the best picture of Davies they could get, off-balance looking like he's about to tumble out of bounds barely holding the ball. Come on DesNews, do your job with a little more pride.
College Kid | 8:45 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Maybe there's a good number of us that are actually concerned about the kid's future in life. There's no better way to rob yourself of an actual college experience than by attending BYU.
As for college basketball being of little matter... well, that's just crazy talk. Quit acting like you have life all figured out because you aren't as involved a college basketball fan as the people posting.

Enjoy your bubble and all the "honor" code amenities that come along with that town.
Dave | 8:49 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I am happy for the kid that he chose the school he wanted to attend. I'm a die hard Ute fan but let's keep this signing in perspective. Many of you say most Pac 10 schools wanted him and if that is true I can't imagine him chosing BYU over UCLA or Arizona.
Should have gone to Utah | 9:05 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
He could have played post season in the BCI again.

I hope the Utes set their sights high this year and at least try to get a NIT invite.
Anonymous | 10:30 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
to Dave. Tyler Haws could have gone to those schools. They really wanted him but he chose BYU over them. The big time conference are going to get the big time players. So its kudos to the Cougars or Utes if they can land a local kid who happens to be one of the best players in the country at his position.
Re:Re: UNLV | 10:59 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Again a zoobie talking out of his. . . well, head. Anthony Marshall is arguably the best player in Nevada, when he chose UNLV, his counterpart, Elijah Johnson who wanted to attend UNLV, had to go a different direction. Thats fine, UNLV got who they wanted. UNLV recruits nationally and does not care for the second tier players in Nevada. Thus UNLV has 5 star recruits out of New Jersey, Illinois, 2 from CA, not to mention, transfers from Memphis, Ketucky and UCLA.

With this team, we'll be more then happy to play any game in Provo. We'll give you your props, you beat what people consider an over-achieving team by 40 pts in Provo. Good Job. This years team will not be anything close to over-achieving, most supporters have them contending for the Final Four or better.

Good Luck with your Utah boys.
Re: Trinity | 11:05 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
You mean like your vollyball players?
