What a great win for the Utes!!
Keep It Up | 6:16 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Nice job Utes. Now put together a complete offensive game and no one can touch you.
Satsified Utes | 7:03 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Glad utes fans are "satisfied" with their teams performance. Espcially the 1 for 8 on third down in the first half. That ute offense is just a machine.

3rd String | 8:05 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Ute fans, don't you think you should worry when a teams 3rd string QB scores on you, and this is a team that cannot score TD's at all?

I wouldn't write the defense shines in the title. I have no clue how that team is pulling off these wins.
UtahManamI | 8:06 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
No doubt the utes have a few wrinkles to figure out but once they get the offense going they can compete witn anybody in the country. Brian Johnson should be in Heisman talks around the country, not Maxy Hall. It's a joke to even mention Max in Heisman talks when BYU hasn't played anybody. At least Utah has a schedule to tout!
Poor Wyoming | 8:08 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I hate to see any MWC school have soooo many problems. I could have recovered the bad-snap-fumble in the end zone, and I'm a Sr. Citizen...

But....a Win's a Win....
Y GUY | 8:12 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
It's great to read Ute fans defend such a 'tough' schedule that the Utes have. Michigan...wow, they're good! Seems as though Weber state could beat them in the Big House. Oh, and when Washington State (the same team BYU beat on the road) beats Oregon State next week it won't do the Utes any favors. Maybe Ute fans should look up that stats of the 'great' teams that Utah has beaten so far this season.
Half Empty or Half Full | 8:13 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I'm a Ute season ticket holder and I'm not sure if I am optimistic or pesimistic about the Utes thus far. They are 7-0....no one can complain about that record. They have stepped up when the games have been close and have made the plays to win games. They have been clutch in close situations.

On the flip side, the offense hasn't shown the promise that we all thought they would. Senior quarterback, senior receivers, excellent running backs.....but hardly any production on a consistent basis. I really think Johnson needs to step up and let the offensive unit know that, starting this week, it isn't acceptable to play poorly for half the game. They need a clean, crisp performance and someone needs to be the leader and show the offense how its done.

If the offense can live up to its billing in the second half of the season, no one will be able to beat them (including Nov 22nd). The defense is too good and special teams is darn good too.

Oh, and Ludwig has got to go too.....seems he can't come up with a scheme to match his offense's strengths.

Go Utes!!!
Michigan | 8:25 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Has anyone else noticed the Utes signature win over Michigan in the "little house" is looking more and more like a win over Utah State?
Re Satisfied Utes | 8:46 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I'm so glad you decided to come comment on the Ute article. Maybe you should go read the one about how BYU "dominated" their way to a 21-3 victory against UNM at home. I wonder if the refs will help them down in Ft. Worth the way they did in Seattle. Either way, BYU has a good team this year. I just hope they don't fold while being under the national spotlight on Thursday at TCU. I'm hoping for 2 undefeated teams in Nov.
RE: Satisfied | 8:48 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
It's hard not to be satisfied with a 40-7 win played in pretty nasty conditions. Are we completely satisfied? No. Ute fans recognize that the offense hasn't been playing up to it's potential, but until it costs us a game, I don't see any reason to complain.
DS | 8:49 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I love the fact that "Holy Toledo" (who?) beat Michigan at the Big House. Sure makes Utah's win there lose a little luster, which will be reflected in the BCS polls soon. My goodness, isn't that what the Utes' followers have been saying the whole season regarding BYU's "big wins?"
Re: Satisfied Utes | 8:54 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Hey bro, you try to go out there in 25 degree weather and do something on offense. It's a very different offensive game when your hands are cold.

Brian has plenty of time to get the offense perfected. If there weren't things to work on it wouldn't be a football season. As long as they keep winning games and improve to a "perfect" offense by Nov. 22, we have little to complain about.
COSMOLOVER | 9:12 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
2 TD'S on offense will do when facing an atrocious Wyoming team, but will not suffice vs. CSU, NMU, TCU, or especially BYU. 7 games into it, when will Utah's Offensive line start protecting Johnson? and when will Johnson begin to be decisive for an entire game?
Mike Johnson Fallon NV | 9:20 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
The Utes signature win is not over Michigan. Michigan is only the 2nd best team Utah has played this year. The signature win is over Oregon State. Oregon State and Michigan do happen to be the best teams either Utah or BYU have played this year so far.
paralysis by analysis | 9:31 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
BJ and the offense want to perform so badly that they are thinking too much about execution vs. just going lights out and doing it. (Just like the way I play golf sometimes) They just need to grip it and rip it!

You gotta love the total team effort! Utah is one of ten unbeaten teams in the country. How may D1 teams are there?

Utah has the team chemistry to go all the way this year. (Inspite of all the gloomy gusses out there in the Utah nation).

GO UTES!
Worried | 9:42 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I like the 7-0 record, but am worried because the offense appears so inconsistent ( only 50 yards rushing against the Cowpokes?). Without the great efforts of the D and Special teams, the Utes might have a couple of L's. Johnson was better last year, I don't know what his problem is, but Whitt can't be afraid to change it up and let Louks play a little more, that kid is exciting and is gonna be good.

CSU should be a much better game that the lowly Cowboys were, I hope we're ready.
danburtreynolds | 9:49 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
RE Mike Johnson in Fallon NV:

I agree, Oregon State is the best team Utah has played thus far, I think they are a very good team that is finding their stride.

as for the zoobies, take your blah blah to Harmon and Wrubel. 21 pts at home to UNM with the help of a phantom block in the back call no negate a td is hardly impressive.

Go Utes.
Re Y Guy | 9:56 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
For being such a "Y Guy" I thought you'd know that BYU played Washington, not Washington State. Your whole post lost any credibility bro. Get your facts straight before you go off like that. Silly Coug...
Ute Offense | 9:56 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Utes are doing awesome and the offense isn't perfect but its not bad. Because a lot of us ute fans can't settle for having just a good team unless we compare with the kitties down south here you go. Both BYU and TCU have 28 Touchdowns this year. They are considered to have amazing offenses. The utes have 27 touchdowns plus a ton of field goals by Louie. The reason people think we are sputtering is because we get the ball so many times in a game because of our awesome defense. Best offense is a good defense...just wish you other fans could enjoy our undefeated season.
RE: Y Guy | 9:59 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Washington plays Oregon State this week. You must be a BYU fan to get Washington State and Washinton mixed up. I know you only follow the Y, and every other team in the nation, in your mind, is the exact same team. Washington STATE is not Washington.
Oregon State | 10:01 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
The Beavers (3-3) may be, marginally, the best team Utah has played this season, but they're simply not that good.

Sure, they beat USC, but pathetic Stanford beat USC at USC last season.

Coincidentally, Stanford beat Oregon State this (36-28) this season, and TCU beat Stanford (31-14).

And it took a miracle finish by Utah to pull out a win over a team that's really about as good as Air Force. I'm more impressed with Utah's win at Air Force, even though it took some last minute heroics to pull out that win also.

Utah is 7-0. They've done well. But, even though their schedule, so far, has been a little tougher than BYU's, the Ute's certainly haven't played a "tough" schedule.
To: danburtreynolds | 10:05 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Obviously you didn't see the replay, there was a block in the back, hot "phantom" at all. Whether the block impacted the play is another question, but refs have to call what they see, not what they think will impact a play. If you saw the replay you would know what I'm talking about. As for the outcome being affected, I seriously doubt that UNM would have figured out how to score another touchdown, since they were completely befuddled by the great BYU defense. As for UNM, look out Utes, you go to their house soon. Their offense should be even better by the time you play them. I'm thinking UNM by 17 over the utes. And I'm also thinking it will probably be something like 17-0 or 20-3. That ute offense doesn't scare anybody. Wyoming essentially shut you down. And by the way the only touchdown scored in conference by the cowboys was against the utes.
Michigan wolverettes | 10:11 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
"Michigan is only the 2nd best team Utah has played this year."

correction, Michigan is only the 5th best team Utah has played this year:

1 Oregon State
2 Air Force
3 UNLV
4 Weber State
5 Michigan
6 Wyoming
7 Utah State
danburtreynolds | 10:17 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
To whoever replied to me:

Actually, I did see the replay, and commentators on ESPN felt it was a phantom call, as do I. Now this will probably cause you zoobs to claim persecution by ESPN, but you guys are good at that.

As for the Wyoming TD, who cares.
Billiam T Wex | 10:30 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Utah beat WYO 40 - 7, BYU beat WYO 44 - 0. Give Utah 3 more points for a road win, and give Utah 3 points for home field against BYU. BYU beats Utah by 5!!!
Luck | 10:41 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
is having a great defense and special teams to constantly bail out your pathetic offense.
Runiing Utes | 10:42 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Hey 3rd string. Did you even watch the game? Yes, the 3rd string QB scored but if reviewed, they would have changed the call since he stepped on the line and he scored on our 3 rd string/jv "D" squad. Utah St. scored on BYU but against their 3rd string so your point is what?
wtf? | 10:54 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I'm worried. The last place team in the mwc ... who hadn't scored a touchdown against any mwc team this year beat us in offense and scored on us. At this point BYU's offense and defense are playing better than us. We basically play 2 and a half quarters without a quarterback each game because johnson is about as consistent as a football bounce. I just hope we have a chance to meet byu undefeated and then a chance to win because statistically they own us.
Re: To danburtreynolds | 11:04 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Wow, you're really arrogant. Great BYU defense? I think it was more of UNM sputtering. As far as you saying the Ute offense doesn't scare anybody, I'm glad you think that. Keep thinking until Nov 22. Either way I think you should worry about your Cougars in Ft Worth on Thursday. Which team will show up? The one that blew out UCLA at home or the one that barely beat a winless Washington team on the road? My guess is the one that played in Washington. TCU will be much harder than Washington. Trust me, Texas crowds are the worst. I know, I'm here. Enjoy the undefeated season while it lasts. I don't see BYU beating TCU. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think they will.

Sagarin

True Ratings based on wins/losses AND how teams actually played against opponents, not the ELO-CHESS garbage he obviously dispises, but is forced to use for the BCS rankings:

17 Oregon State
48 Air Force
79 Weber State
82 Michigan
86 UNLV
129 Utah State
136 Wyoming

also, for reference

73 UCLA
77 New Mexico
107 Washington
114 Northern Iowa

Summary of OOC opponents for BYU and Utah:

Michigan is sinking fast (the wolverettes will finish with a losing record and will miss going to a bowl for the first time in 33 years); Oregon State could finish 2nd in the Pac 10, or could drop to 6th or 7th; UCLA almost beat the Ducks in Oregon and is improving; Washington is looking for a new coach and will probably only win one game; Weber State will soon be ranked, but Northern Iowa is already ranked in the Top 10; and Utah State may win one more game.

The season is at the halfway point. The biggest games for most teams still lie ahead.
Wind | 11:09 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Way to get it done in the wind. Holy cow was it windy! I was at the game and I have never experienced that windy of a game before. There was stuff flying everywhere! Good job Utes, keep it up!
Very Concerned | 11:10 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I just read an article that said we (Utah) only have 4 players in the NFL, only one more than Utah State. The article said BYU has 12.

Can any fellow Utah fans tell me if this is true (if so, how are we going to start getting some better recruits)??
In the Crimson Glasses | 11:17 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
shaded world of Utah homers, only calls that favor the Utes count, only scores that favor the Utes count, only actual results that favor the Utes count.

All other calls, scores and results were wrong and SHOULD HAVE been changed because the actual results didn't favor the Utes.

Washington actually scored a two-point conversion to win the game; New Mexico actually got credit for their TD and came back to score the winning touchdown; Wyoming's TD doesn't count because the Utah homers don't think it should have; Utah actually won the last two BYU/Utah games dispite Harline being open and 4th & 18.

ONLY, in a CRIMSON-colored world.
Come on | 11:20 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
It must really irk BYU fans that the Utes have played a better schedule thus far. That's evident in the way BYU fans constantly try to downplay every Utes' opponent and their opponents' notable wins. While I do think many fellow Utah fans overrate the Utes strength of schedule, at least Ute fans can claim their opponents have beaten quality opponents. BYU may be the only team in the country who can't claim one of their opponents has beaten a signature team. And don't even try with the Tennessee references BYU fans.

As far as the Utah offense, I say give it a rest. It's obvious the offense is only average. They'll probably never play a "complete game" as so many of you are pleading for. This team wins with defense and special teams and there is no shame in admitting that. The offenses of Hawaii and BYU are cute and put up great numbers, but I'd rather have substance than glamor and Utah appears to be more substance to me. As they say, "defense wins championships" the offense just has to do enough to win and the Utes have done that. That's all I can ask for.
Mark in Peoria | 11:26 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
re: billiam T Wex

Using your logic...Utah beat USU by 48 and BYU beat them by 20. Given the fact it was a road game for both and giving Utah "3" points for the home field, Utah beats BYU by 23. Whatever.

Anyway, "Y Guy" wrote how Utah fans should look up the stats on how such great temas the Utes have played, clearly unimpressed with their win at Michigan. He goes on further to say how BYU beat "Washigton State" on the road and how Washigton State will kill Oregon State. Actually, dude, perhaps you should look up NOT THE STATS but rather THE TEAMS BYU has played thus far...it was washington not WSU. Further Oregon State just played Washington State and the beavers won 66-13. OSU plays Washington this week and I'm betting the beavers win by at least two TDs.
Utah's faith | 11:35 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
in ESPN's "unbiased" analysis will eventually come back to bite them.

BYU is simply ESPN's chief whipping boy, because the Cougars are the most prominent team in the MWC, but ESPN is still sore at the whole conference because we were too "arrogant" to play by their rules and told the bean counters in Conn. to take their Tues Wed Fri games and stuff them with their Thanksgiving turkey.
BCS Polls | 12:02 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Let's all just stop fighting about who has played a better schedule and go to the current BCS rankings.

grjash(dot)netfirms(dot)com(slash)bcs(slash)bcs_rankings(dot)html

Here, you will see that even with Utah being behind in the human polls, we still come out ahead in the overall BCS polls.
Utah: 9
TDS: 12

So you Zoobies from Happy Valley can just SHUT IT!
Not much to Crow About Utes | 12:05 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Wyoming has the worst division one team in the country. Dixie State would give more of a fight than the "cowgirls".
Re Utahs' Faith | 12:15 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I'm curious, everytime I watch ESPN and they talk about Utah it's good, why do they always talk bad about BYU? Could it be that they actually have some brains and know what they're talking about? Not to BYU fans, because that would BYU may not actually be as good as they think. Time to think BYU fans, which is it? Are all of you right, or is the rest of the college football world right? We'll find out on Thursday
Re: Mark in Peoria | 12:33 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Clearly "Y Guy" does not know his geography very well, or his CFA teams here in the west. Or perhaps, he just got happy and added State to his comment.

Either way, as the season progresses, nether BYU nor Utah has a strong schedule to brag about. Michigan continues to fall, while OSU is the lone non-conf competitor. As for BYU, can't say much about UW and UCLA. Both teams are horrible this year...who knew?

Either way, the score gets settled on the field, as it is every year. The last two years, BYU has come out on the winning end...done! End of story, end of argument. Till the U wins, the cougs own scoreboard.

It would be cool to see an matchup of undefeated teams...not sure that will happen though.

Blah blah blah.

"Oregon State and Michigan happen to be the best teams either Utah or BYU have played so far."

I disagree. I think both UNLV and Air Force are better than Michigan.
To: Danburtreynolds | 2:13 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
If you saw the replay, then why do you need to have ESPN to tell you something you obviously saw. There was a block in the back, not phantom at all. But typical yewt, you have to have somebody else tell you what to think. You guys are such a joke. I think it's amazing that half the stadium emptied against OSU and missed the comeback, because basically you have no faith in your pathetic offense.

Utah actually has 13 players in the NFL, BYU has 13 as well. Utah had 14 until the Raiders dropped John Madsen, USU has 4, so I think we're doin alright.
Disappointing... | 2:34 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Almost without exception it is the BYU fans who are doing the name calling on the boards, i.e., "Cowgirls," "Wolverettes," etc.

Grow up, people. That type of behavior and it makes you look absolutely silly. It would indeed be interesting to know the average age of posters on these boards.

Utes have 14 in the league. John Madsen was re-signed to the Raiders last week after Ben Troupe was put on IR due to a foot injury.
Typical? | 3:08 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Your player had already fallen down from slipping and because of that if you watch the replay you see that the New Mexico defender never even touches the BYU player although his hands are moving towards him in a pushing motion, so I can see how the ref got it wrong if he missed the first part where the BYU player slipped on his own, that still doesn't make it the right call and it changed the game even if BYU wins, 21-10 looks a lot different than 21-3. And while it was disappointing to see the few fans leave at the OSU game, it was hardly half the stadium, and living in Provo and having been to more BYU games than a lot of people on here I can say that BYU fans and fans all over the world do the same thing, it is unfortunate but true. I don't think anyone would ever accuse Ute fans of having to be told what to think, that's usually reserved for BYU fans because of the church, as a member I know this is not true but I just think its funny coming from BYU considering what people say about them.
