Big games call for key players to preform. Dixies QB was looking for a place to hide most of the night and was the reason they lost.

Dixie had a well thought out game plan and its D-line is terrific. Two weeks ago, I would have bet that Hurricane would beat this team, but now I think it's even money. Dixie has better athletes overall and a better defense, but Hurricane's offense is more disciplined and productive. I'm very impressed with Monkres. Dixie made a smart choice there.
Dixie will definitely be in the playoffs come the end of the season, and if Sharp gets on the same page with his receivers, I predict Dixe will make a run.

If you are a real fan of the Flyers then you must keep things positive on here, because all you will do is hurt young athletes who are trying there best out there. I hope that you can see that all your comment will due is hurt a young man's ego that already bruised. Stay Positive, we don't want to sound like SC.

if dixie didnt have five or so turnovers 2 pick sixs they probably could have won but these teams are closer then they have been in along time dixies defense was awsome but got little help from offense PV won this game because you can tell they are more experienced but all in all they are both good teams dixie will be better than PV next year cause alot of there good players are juniors and pv,s are all seniors
Both Teams | 11:26 a.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Both teams are going to make a run this year. PV needs to find a passing game, even in the wind, later on to loosen things up. I also think that if Dixie doesn't turn it over and find some sort of running game other than Sharp than they could be deadly, their defense is absolutely awesome, especially their D-Line, maybe best in the state. The two DE's for that defense is like having 2 extra players on the field, they are awesome. I predict both go to the playoffs and go deep. Great game last night, neither team gave up. It was fought to the end congrats to PV but also congrats to Dixie.
D-Fense! D-Fense! | 11:35 a.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Both teams showed that they could stop the other but holy cow Dixie's D held Ence to 60 yards on what, 20 carries, WOW! Also Hafoka had 8 yards in the first half with 8 carries. Was it 11 yards total for passing yards?! This Dixie D is for real. If the offense didn't spot PV 14 points It would have been over. Also it was 3rd and goal from the 7 and a flag was thrown on what wasn't PI so it gave PV a whole new set of downs on the 3 yard line. Thats 21 points. All PV had to do with the lead and the wind at it's back was control the clock and that's what they did, because Dixie's O kept turning it over. Great game to both teams but I was very impressed with the game plan and the play of the Dixie D. If you went to the game you would have to agree. Go Region 9!!!
good | 12:13 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
It was a good game and alot of good hits and plays. But it sould have been better because you can't turnover the ball 5 times and win. Not an attack just a fact no blame intended it is a team sport. Just like you can't let someone run up the middle untouched for 66 yds untouched for a TD. Both teams are good teams and should be proud of how well they play ball. And both teams should see where they need to improve so they can get to and do well in state. Dixie will be good next year but let's not go overboard there are only 4 Jrs. that start for Dixie and the rest are Sr's. Dixie did prove that Justin Ence is stopable 60 yds. not 200yds and so is Villy. Good job to them and the rest of the PV. boys on the win. Dixie good job that ones over not what we wanted but we still have work to do like beat SC and make a run at the State title. Can't change the past just the future so go get it done.

There was not two pick-sixes. There was one. Dixie has as many starting juniors as PV does-they are not all seniors. But thats ok because those JV coming up are pretty good too for PV-just ask your own JV players.
I do however agree with the comment about the new coach. He seems great and will be a huge asset to Dixie and region 9 football.
Another side note to the first Dixie fan about the QB. As a PV fan I have to say the QB was the one ofbright spots for Dixie. Don't tear down someone who tried to do it all last night to help his team to a win.

Do not complain about officiating.. About giving PV a fresh set of downs. There were TWO false starts in a row on your offense right before your second score. First one on QB(No Call) and second false start on right gaurd(Somehow this ended up as a neutral zone infraction on PV go figure).
I think the game was great-however do not start blaming officials. Oh and I noticed you didn't finish your statements with the second half statistics..Where is Hafoka's second half yardage?

Dixie Fan,
Mike Sharp is not the reason Dixie lost the game. He is an awesome athlete, especially being a junior - had over 20 carries and set a record last night, I doubt he was looking for a place to hide. Maybe the receivers could help him out a little. Watch the Gorman film. Good job both teams, both quarterbacks, and hope to see PV & Dixie going to State.

D-Fense! D-Fense! | 12:53 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I agree with you to:D-Fense. I wasn't complaining about the officiating I was just saying how PV was able to get a fresh set of downs so don't get too agitated. I'm sorry Hafoka did break one big run for a td and didn't get touched but thats just great adjustments on PV staff that did that. Villiami is a great back and I give him credit he was PV's only offense last night. It was however a matter of time that PV would score since Dixie kept turning the ball over 5x. Officials had nothing to do with the win or loss they are horrible for both sides I agree with you there could have been calls either way. You sound like you think that the officials called a neutral zone infraction just because it is PV, with the "go figure" statement. PV gets its share of no calls especially with the holding on offense. Dixie D however still better than PV's in my book.
I disagree | 3:00 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
with D-fense. It's not that you think Dixie's defense is better, it's that PV has a very boring offensive scheme. As a defense playing against PV, just keep an eye on either Ence of Villiami. Once in a while they will break one, but it's not that hard to defend. PV had 15 yds in the air last night, Wow ! If PV want to make it to the semis again, they need to come up with something more to keep the defense confused. The PV defense is awesome and they are the reason for most of their wins. PV should have no problem disposing of SC next week.
To:D-Fense | 3:40 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Thanks for the correction- No I don't think there were bad calls just because we are PV-I thought the officials were pitiful both ways-But I wouldn't day that PV holds any more than Dixie does-Dixie's D is not better than PV's-Otherwise the score would have been different. But I understand that as a Dixie fan you believe that just I like I don't. But at least we can agree to disagree-But as far as the officials go I am right there with you.
Dixie Fan | 3:48 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
You can not win any game with that many picks! Dont care who u play! Facts are facts. If the one with the ball throws INT s then they must face the music! Not being harsh just stating facts. The INt's were the difference last night.
Pick it up PV | 4:47 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Anyone notice the poor clock management before the half. Why not try to score at least a field goal, PV. That could have come back to haunt you, losing by 8. By the way, Great defensive coaching, Croshaw! (All year long)
Really PV | 4:51 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I think PV played down, and think Hurricane could beat Dixie this year if they were to play. If PV doesn't figure out a passing game, they're in trouble.
re:really pv | 5:58 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
you thought pv played down to their opponent, your crazy. Just accept the hard fought win. You are only saying that because its dixie. By the way if dixie had reber in the second have they could have kept running it down pv's throat like they did in the second quarter so please!!
Could be........ | 5:59 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
that since SC had a bye, that all of the coaches and some players were there scouting the game. PV may have intentionally not used all of their play book so that next week they could really confuse SC at PV's home. If that's the case, SC may be toast by half time. Also, PV had 1:30 on the clock before the half. They acted like they had a 30 pt lead because the clock just kept going and they seemed in no jury to score. They may want to incorporate a 2 min offense to score in a hurry under those conditions. Dixie also had the wind at their back at the end of the 3rd. They also didn't have any body on the bench of the "sky box" watching the clock either. Come on PV & Dixie, use some clock management !
re could be | 6:37 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Yes its possible that Pv didnt show all thier stuff last night. From what i recall they used the same passing play twice and got pass interference on both. Dixie was exposed last night in thier secondary. Did you see the play with the Pv reciever clear behind the Dixie's defense? That stuff was there all night. All im saying is Pine View, in my opionon didnt do what they could of done.
lol | 7:48 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008

Well as a PV guy its hard to say this but Dixie was the better team last night,if not for the turnovers Dixie would have romped,Wake up PV, you better make some adjustments or its over quickly in the playoffs, and it's not looking good going forward after all the seniors leave.

How can you say that Ence and Villiami aren't that hard to defend. Have you read their stats this year? Holy.

I've been to every PV game this year, I agree, they did play down. But next year, I think Dixie will be the team to beat. I don't think they're hiding special plays for SC, but the two they run over and over, has seem to work so far. PS - after they added the time back, they had 1:52 before half, with one time out, what were they thinking?
dixie fan | 8:52 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Great defensive coaching to Dixie. Coach Nyberg has done a great job with D this year.
dhs | 9:00 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Dixie's coaches are all good. It helps when they have played the game under some of the best coaches in the nation. The qb situation does need to improve for dixie to really compete. It may just be maturity but whining by the qb gets you nowhere. Just ask Snow Canyon.
play down? | 9:06 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Well if PV plays down they certainly don't play up...Cottonwwod,They could have lost to Hurricane and Dixie as easily as they won. They are very one dimensional...no passing game at all, when they play the better 4A teams from up north their done!
PV loyal | 9:13 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Lots to say about the play of Ence and Villiami. Pretty amazing that all year long the two of them have averaged over 200 yards combined. when a team committs to stop one the other will have a great game. i heard all week long how the Dixie D was going to shut down the Ence kid, thats all they had to do. Well, he only had 60 yards, on 10 carries. Still over 6 yards per carry, Villi ends up with 150 yards, theres the magic, 200 plus a game. Ence had most of his yards in the first half, in the 2nd Villiami was the go to guy, gaining well over 100 yards in that half. Pass game needs to come on, to many dropped passes, but Dixie's awesome passing game was 13 for 30 something. PV D dominated the game, turnovers are not simply given, like last night, sometimes they are taken!!!!

you probably dont watch the jv games but pine view will be good for two more years after this one their sophmore class is legit. they have not been challenged in region(with the exception of the hurricane game where hurricane played half their juniors who started varsity and pv almost won that game) they have an amazing passing game and two really good recievers in wilstead and murdock who have already seen varsity time and both have varsity catches. plus they have one sophmore who already starts on defense and the rest of there defense is amazing. opponants have scored a total of 27 pts on them. have no fear the panthers will be here for awhile.

Just because you stay up until 12:23 a.m. to dog
the Dixie quarterback doesn't mean that junior is
going to learn right from left, odd from even, pass
from duck and run, in time to single-handedly bring
Dixie a state championship. Of the three things
necessary to have a passing attack,i.e. a qb that
knows the plays, receivers that catch the ball, and
an offensive line that provides protection; the
young man playing quarterback has been the most
consistant this year. This should allow you to
get to bed earlier on Saturday morning.

too bad not 3a | 6:55 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Would be fun to see PV and Dixie in 3A competing against the likes of Hurricane, Logan, Morgan, ect. I bet either one of them would have a realistic shot at winning the whole thing. It's too bad that this 4A mess hasn't been worked out.
re re pv guy | 8:27 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
No doubt PV will be competitive going forward. But they as well as Dixie have lost many good athletes to Desert Hills. It didn't hurt that much this year because the seniors could stay at their schools. So you may look at your JV team and say no problem but the problem is depth, when you have to play the Cottonwoods,Timpviews and the better teams up north that's where it will show.I doubt if any region 9 4A team will have a legitimate chance to go very far in the playoffs. But if you think there won't be a drop off in PV next year your kidding yourself.
Nyberg? | 11:01 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
I believe that coach Nyberg is doing an awesome job as the Defensive Coordinator. I also know that he is getting a lot of help from guys like Kelly Smith, Monkres, and Schroeder. It's too bad that Nyberg can't find some better help on the defensive side of the ball, he has to do this almost all by himself. Pretty good for being a first timer on the defensive end of things. Great job Nyberg, keep up the good work, your time spent preparing each week shows on the field, these kids are really playing hard for you. Good Job!!!!
re: PV Loyal | 11:05 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Ence 20 carries 60 yards= 3 yrds per carry
whole team 215 yards total on 54 total plays. I think that DHS would take those numbers any day from PV. I know Dixie still lost but if there were half the turnovers no brainer Dixie wins. Teams more evenly matched than most think.

PV Insider | 11:49 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
The Desert Hills split has hurt Dixie and Pine View at the lower levels, but has not had that much effect at the varsity level this year. I believe that both PV and Dixie will make the semifinals this year, but will struggle next year if they are unfairly forced to stay in the 4A division in spite of their waning numbers. I was very impressed with the Dixie team (especially their defense)and their coaches. That is a very good football team. And Pine View, well they simply have a tough bunch of players and coaches who simply find a way to win. I hope they both go deep in the playoffs. And who knows? Maybe one or both of them will find their way into the finals. An all region 9 final in St. George would be awesome!
Anonymous | 12:51 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
People on here keep saying if dixie didnt turn the ball over so many times then the panthers would of been beaten. Well if ence would of broken a tackle or two then he would of rushed for 220 yards in the game. People its football, things happen.
Lucky PV... | 1:46 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
That was a great game... Dixie outplayed Pine View, but lost due to mistakes and turnovers. Dixie would have massacred Pine view - the turnovers. I know turnovers are a part of the game, PV's defense saved the game for PV. 3 of Pine Views 4 touchdowns were scored either by a interception or following an interception. One interception was returned for a TD the other to the 1 yard line..Pine View's offense had so many 3 and outs I lost count.. Dixie has an outstanding D line! The two Logan's have to be the best Defensive Ends in the State. Anyone that says Ence was not shut down is blind. He had 60 yards on at least 20 carries, thats all PV did was run! Pine View's offense looked horrible. Dixie just needs to fine tune their QB, and they could be unstoppable. Coaching is the best it has ever been at Dixie. Great Job!

Is it true that Reber tore his ACL? That would be unfortunate for a kid who works as hard as he does to be successful. Hard worker, great attitude, competitor.
Re:Lucky PV | 3:21 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
You are funny-Good luck with that. And if telling yourself you were in the game minus the turnovers makes you feel better about losing then go ahead and keep it up. But facts state otherwise-Dixie LOST the game and the turnovers were the result of a great defense. You didn't outplay PV because you didn't win. As far as your ends being the best in the state-well again if it makes you feel better keep telling yourself that. Thinking that you controlled Ence is fine-but what about Villi? There is a reason that they call it a team sport. Because it takes a TEAM to win-not just one player.
As far as Nyberg goes- He is truly a great coach and a great man. His son is a perfect example of how a football player should be. Keep it up.

Gee, I thought defense was actually part of a football team? Thanks for clarifying for us that only Pine View's offense counts as their entire team.
Many contributors to this blog have recognized this game for what it was; a good, hard fought contest between two teams that were more closely matched than I think some may have suspected.
Unfortunately, however, there are the sad few that just can't get over the loss and move on!
News flash: Only one of the interceptions was clearly thrown to a PV defender. The other FOUR were...PICKED OFF!!! That means someone made a defensive play on the ball, i.e. jumped up(2), made a break, dove in front(1 ea.), to cut off the flight of the ball and TAKE IT FROM the opposing offense. And, the defender making that play, in every case, was wearing a uniform that strangely resembled the uniforms of the offensive players.
Dixie's TEAM lost, Pine View's TEAM won! Get over it!!!

The Dixie D-line is flat out good, folks. 55 and 62 are better athletes than any on Cottonwood's D-line. End of story. Of course Dixie slowed down PV's run game and held them well under their ususal yardage...not only do they have great D-ends, they put eight men in the box. PV still managed better than 200 yards rushing, which speaks volumes about Ence, Hafoka and the PV O-line.
It's football 101 that if your receivers can't make plays game after game, defenses will load the box and you're gonna get beat, no matter how good your run game may be. Let's not kid ourselves; Dixie is a good team and could have won that game. In my view, either PV receivers start helping Ence out or the playoffs will end quickly for PV.

Tiresome! It's started already. St. George schools complaining about having to play in 4A! Newsflash! Your schools will be over the 1000 student mark next year, which means your will be at the 4A level. Look at the Wash. Co. School District website to see how big the middle and intermediate classes are coming into your high schools. Get used to being 4A, thats where your belong! By the way you have been very successful in many of your sports programs at the 4A level! So don't complain.

To "No Wonder"
You must not have looked at the clock, down number, and postion. There was too much time initially to take a knee and they needed at least one more first down to have the ability to run out the clock.
Wake up and know your facts. As to coach Nyberg, I followed him at Dixie high, Dixie College and BYU, a great athlete, and person. His character is reflecten in his son. The PV players said he was a real competitor, but a gentlemen, complementing each good play and helping everyone up. Way to go. This is what high school football is about. Great game and hopefully both will go far and represent region nine well.

Dixie only loaded the box when PV went into that power I gun look. Otherwise they had to cover trips most of the night taking 5 out of the box so lets not make Ence and Hafoka out to be Vince Young and Reggie Bush, they are good but not that good.

Two things:
One-It's "Talent", not tallet or tallent and "always", not all ways. I figure if you're coaching kids you might want to at least keep up in spelling with them.
Two-I am not "Hey PV Guy", but I don't see a single critical remark in the blog "Hey PV Guy" wrote. Stating that Cottonwood has more talented players is a non-critical opinion. Dixie's d-line can still be good without being as good as C-wood's. It almost seems like you're mixing up "Hey Pv Guy" and "PV Guy", who I am also not. "PV Guy" was critical of PV receivers. And, I must say, his criticism is not entirely unjustified. They had several drops Friday night, a few of which were drive stoppers. He's right. If PV doesn't shake things up a little, add a wrinkle here, a twist there in the rush attack, and some discipline hanging on to passes, someone will bite them in the rear! If they get past SC unscathed this Friday they're looking at a possible rematch down the road with talented and revenge-seeking, extremely well coached Bountiful in round 2(spare your blogs-I know a lot has to happen between now and then!).

It's probably more accurate to say that every, or almost every player starting on either Cottonwood's or Timpview's open enrollment rosters would be starting and STARRING on the teams who's boundaries they actually live in (obviously, I'm speaking here only of the narrow percentage that do live outside CW's and TV's respective boundaries). As a PV parent I can accept the fact that CW and TV have superior talent accross the board. Why shouldn't they? If I lived in the area and my son had the attributes, desire and attitude to play D1, why not give him every advantage? Of course, I would certainly take care to map out the academically applicable reason for the transfer since the UHSAA protects the "not for sports purposes" clause so tightly!
So, cheers to you! However, unless you really are this arrogant, there are a few kids down here that would be starting at ANY school...including whichever one it is you don't play for.
Generalized Bravado, A+. Accuracy, F.
