Elder Jensen is absolutely right. The Epistle of James makes the same point. They are both in essence saying that you really don't believe UNLESS you SHOW it by DOING!

That is why I am DOING something about my beliefs in the equality and liberty of all American citizens. I am DOING something to financiall support the ACLU, or LDS4gaymarriage, or any other group that will fight against proposition 8!

I find E. Jensen's comments to be offensive because they are dismissive of a host of academics, like myself, who have given our lives to blessing others in ways other than or in addition to praying, paying, and obeying...

The historical and cultural tendency for dismissal of an entire group of people for being educated, gay, black or whatever lies at the core of why the LDS church continues to experience a decline in membership (and participation) in America and can hardly nurture and keep converts elsewhere, among other reasons.

A group that wants to market itself as a "Zion" people ought to consider more carefully the implications of its judgments by the words it uses and ways it chooses to frame others in contrast to its own religious self-importance.

Yes,it is not enough to go through the motions of attending church if we don't put into practise in our daily lives the teachings of the Savior. We are encouraged to read the scriptures, ponder them, understand their application in our lives and then to strive to live the teachings. I find it a great challenge to take a good look at myself and see my own flaws and imperfections in relation to the example of our Savior.
