Basic battery back up systems will keep the power going for a short outage like this. Use the power generators bought for Y2K for longer outages. A solar panel or two for the battery system and power inverter and you lose little while all else eat cold hot dogs from foot storage in the dark.
You know a major problem is coming yet few are actually prepared. They wait for BigBrother or "The Church" to take care of them rather than being prepared.

Did some of these poor LDS folks have a backup plan in case the power failed? And were they able to catch the afternoon session of Conference on KSL 1160 on their handheld radios?

Hmm, well this didn't happen to me, but if it did I'd just go for a drive and listen to it in the car. You suggest that we are "unprepared," but how is having a battery backup system preparing us for anything? Who cares about watching TV, or having electricity at all... there are much more important things. All we need is food and shelter, so how are we unprepared by not having a battery backup system? I will admit having a crank radio would be helpful...but still not necessary.
