Arizona newspaper perpetuates that the only reason why polygamy was discontinued by the mainstream LDS Church was so Utah could get statehood. While history does say that the statehood issue was a factor, the theory fails to mention the fact that the US Government threatened to take all the church property and also dissolve the organization itself.
The statehood only theory also fails to consider that then LDS Prophet Wilford Woodruff did take the issue up before the Lord to get help.
He did have a dream (vision) about what the government would do if polygamy continued. I'm sure he prayed real intently.
The statehood only theory is way too simplistic. Most real controversial issues usually have a number of very complex facets to the controversy. It's sad that some try to simplify the complex situations of years gone by.
I hope that the documentary itself doesn't do that. I hope it was only the writer of the news story in the Arizona newspaper.
