the mountain west didn't forget about you.

How dare they pick Max Hall over the impressive performance of several TCU players - I guess they must have taken the opponent into account since the worst team in the PAC is slightly better than a DII opponent
Refs | 10:26 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Shouldn't the ref who called the celebration penalty on Washington be getting some kind of award from the MWC? He had at least as much to do with BYU winning as Max Hall did.......

Really? Was it a slow week in the confrence offices? They get lucky to win by a single point and he gets the nod?

Maybe they just got sick of the BYWho fans complaining about the 'lack of respeckt'...
From AZ | 10:45 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Congratulations Max. You should have won it last week as well.

And Congratulations to a BYU team who rather than hang their head in the face of adversity, came out and aggressively went after the PAT kick. A great lesson to learn life...you can either pout and complain, i.e., UW, or you can get back up and continue the fight, i.e., BYU.

Congrats on a great win.

Max Hall is awesome and should get the recognition he deserves! Also the O line is to be commended for protecting him. Good job Cougars!!
Make up call | 11:19 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Obviously this was a make up call from last week. However Max did have a great game. But was it just me or was Collie droping way too many easy passes?
Anonymous | 11:20 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
quest for perfection baby yeah!!!
Anonymous | 11:25 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
I'd have given it to Unga but Hall played well.

Maybe the Pac-10 officials should have received a few votes as well....
Gotta Score | 11:26 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Great Job Hall. Statistically the Cougar offense is in high gear just like it should be after returning so many talented players. Leading the nation by a large margin on third down conversions shows we can move the chains when we need to - BUT we continue to be scoring less than we should. We struggled with that last season and I thought we would come out of the gates stronger this season. This team will take some time to catch up defensively but they should be averaging 45 points a game. They are moving the ball at will but are not putting points on the board like they should. They should have had 50 against NIU and 40 against Washington. I'm glad a tough UCLA defense didn't catch us in the first two weeks. Go Cougs!
good work | 11:36 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
good work cougs, you only beat a subpar team bcz of the ref. get ready to be humiliated by the next subpar team on your schedule.
Dear Hero | 11:46 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Please, please go back to your pitiful Ute blogs and stay off this.

That said, when will they recognize Dennis Pitta. 361 yards for catches in 2 games, leading the nation and he is not recognized.

As far as the refs they simply followed the rules, specifically (C) you shall not throw the ball in
the air. BYU has been penalized over the years for excessive celebration. I guess some of you feel the rule should be followed unless it could change the outcome of the game, otherwise forget it. I guess they shouldn't call holding anymore, because it might change the outcome.

I know football is an emotional game but the players are expected to execute and know the rules and check their emotions. Sorry for Locker, he played a great game. Either you have the rules or you don't have the rules.
A PAC 10 Ref | 11:50 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
The refs had more to do with Washington staying in the game than anything else. Watch the game and you'll know what I mean. The refs gave Washington the golden oppertunity and BYU blocked that too.
Should have been 3 | 11:57 a.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Hall, Pitta and Unga should have shared the award. All three had outstanding games in a very hostile place to play.

The PAC 10 officials played no role in the final outcome. BYU's sterling execution in blocking the PAT was the deciding factor.
What about Pitta? | 12:03 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Even the biased FSN announcers said he was having a Heisman like start to the season, and no recognition?

And yes, opponent does have to factor into the player of the week honors. Pitta last week had +200 yds receiving, but since it was vs Northern Iowa and not Michigan he got no nod.
Big D | 12:08 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Make up call my eye. Did you watch the play? He launched the ball 20 ft in the air. Read the rules. It would be called 99 times out of 100. But hey there was no hold on the 4 and 10 play either right? If the hold had been called there would have never been the controversy to begin with.
Scoring tied to turnovers | 12:15 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Eliminate the 6 turnovers the Cougars have had in the first two games, and their scoring average would be at least 14 points more per game.
Nice Job! | 12:31 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Great game Hall. You held your composure well. Great landmark drive after the Unga fumble. It really said a lot about the team.

Oh and just so you know, any ball that is launched 30 feet in the air after a touchdown...is a penalty, no matter the situation in the game. The real lesson is losing your composure and hot dogging it. Great battle in Seattle!
BYU 2 | 12:36 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
How the PAC 10 have fallen. Now that BYU is beating them they are no good. But Utah is great for beating a Michigan team that did't even have a winning record last year. I am just glad that it was PAC 10 refs that made that call (which by the rules was correct) or we would have heard the crying for a month. I just hope Utah wins all their games leading up to the BYU game so we can be the first to bring them down. But then we will hear the excuses; refs, injuries, what ifs and so on.
If only | 12:41 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Lets play the "if only game" If only Unga hadn't fumbled in the end zone, if ony the refs had called all of the blatent holding, if only Lock hadn't celebrated in the end zone, if only BYU hadn't blocked the kick.

The fact is BYU WON! Even looking at the "If only's"
And the refs | 12:46 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Even the biased TV announcers also said a clip and two holds were blatantly missed.
Refs | 12:48 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
had absolutely nothing to do with the outcome of the game but they did affect the margin of victory by at least seven points and possibly as many as 21 points. BYU was clearly one to three touchdowns better than Washington.

Pitta's awards will be coming in the next few games. By the time BYU plays the next subpar team on their schedule on November 22nd, Hall, Pitta, Unga and Collie will each have a couple of MWC offensive player of the week awards.
Gotta admit, Big D is right. | 1:12 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Just because the call came at the time it did DOES NOT MEAN Washington got robbed! They had several chances to win this game but blew it! They had to punt 5 times, right there are 5 missed chances already. They has a 35 yard PAT, STRAIGHT DOWN THE LINE (basically a chip shot) and their special teams broke down. They also had only 3 penalties before the final penalty and NO TURNOVERS (playing almost mistake free) and still lost. Finally, there were several penalties not called, and that hold on 4th and 10 was obvious, I mean i didn't know the OL can TACKLE the defender when he is going to the QB!!! Basically the refs felt guilty for not calling all the other calls that they should have and decided that they better call the last one which was definitely a penalty according to the rule book.
yewts out in left field again | 1:19 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Hilarious, yewt fans coming here trying to knock our win when they barely beat a Michigan team that's only half as good as that Washington team. Did they have to compete against a QB as good as Jake Locker? NO!! Did Michigan have an O-line and wide outs and RB's as good as Washington's? NO!! Washington's D was also faster and more athletic than Michigan's. Washington would beat Michigan by 2 TD's if they played.

Max deserves the award, he played great. Tough call though when Pitta and Unga also had great games.
To BYU 2 | 1:21 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Uh, Michigan went 9-4 last year and beat Florida pretty well in a bowl game. That might be a winning record...I could be wrong. Is 9 more than 4? Get your facts straight before posting comments. I'm just sayin...
Anonymous | 1:23 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
"He moves across the field with his brain."
Thanks, Fox sports commentator.
Wow | 1:29 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
You know, I came on this forum to look at what the Cougs had to say about Max and his play. He did great, he deserved it...I think it's funny that BYU fans are now saying Washington would beat Michigan. How do you know? Do they play? SOME BYU fans need to grow up. On that same note, SOME Utah fans need to grow up. The sad thing is, I've noticed more BYU fans need to do a lot more growing up. It hurts to say that it really does.
wow | 1:37 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
I read the BYU blogs to entertain myself and it sure is entertaining today! Every week, BYUs opponent would kill Utah's if they played head to head. I think the same would be said if the Utes played and beat the Dallas Cowboys and BYU beat a gremlin team.
re: BYU 2 | 1:38 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
“…Utah is great for beating a Michigan team that did’t [sic] even have a winning record last year.”

Your post just PROVES, once AGAIN, BYU fans are not football fans, but rather fans of their religion and university. Michigan finished 2nd in the Big 10 last year, and accumulated a 9-4 record overall after having defeated Florida in the Capital One Bowl. Florida is no slouch of an opponent, and for the mathematically challenged, a 9-4 record is a 0.692 rate. Anything over 0.500 qualifies as a “winning record”.
bigbear | 1:39 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
I cannot count the Notre Dame wins by fluke, bad calls. fumbles, missed field goals, miraculous receptions and dropped passes. All the media says is "Notre Dame Wins"

Were just the Cougs from the MWC. were not supposed to beat the big BCS SUPERMEN. gosh, we're lucky to take the field with the big boys.

All BCS teams should crush non bcs teams from the standpoint of recruting alone.

BYU will beat another BCS team this week and the press will say "Byu edges another weak pac 10 school"

Go Cougs
To: Uh... | 1:39 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
"Michigan went 9-4 last year"

That was LAST YEAR. THIS YEAR, after losing most of their best players, Michigan is 1-1 vs non-BCS teams AT HOME, after barely beating Miami-Ohio 16-6.

Washington may start 0-3 after losing to 3 Top 25 teams in a row, but, is a better team than Michigan, with a MUCH better quarterback, and will finish with about the same record as Michigan against a MUCH tougher schedule.
MaxHallisTrue | 1:55 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Beating Pac 10 cellar team, Washington, was excellent practice for BYU's inevitable Vegas Bowl match-up with a Pac 10 4th or 5th place team, Oregon State or Stanford. Utah will be off to another BCS appearance. But again, good victory for BYU, and excellent practice for the Vegas Bowl.
Big O! | 1:56 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
THE O LINE WAS AWSOME! no sacks. nothing even came close to touching Max Hall. Lets hope it stays that way.
Re: To: Uh... | 1:58 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
I think you may have missed the reason I posted that comment...maybe you should read a little more and pay attention. I said it because one of you BYU friends said that Michigan didn't have a winning record last year. So next time you want to post about a stupid comment someone makes...maybe you should look to see WHY that comment was made.
To BYU 2 @ 12:38 | 2:00 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
FYI, Michigan was 9-4 last year and beat Florida 41-35 in the Cap One Bowl on New Years Day. Diss Utah if you want, but at least get the facts straight.
B.Y.U Fan | 2:01 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Good win for Cougars at Washington There Stadium is one of the toughest Stadiums to play in the Country because of the noise level down on the field. They have a 85-26-5 record for a 754 percentage in there opening home games. In 2002 They beat 10th ranked Michigan and just last year they beat a pretty good Boise State team 24 to 10 Hall played really well and deserves the award. I was happy to see that Utah get there two wins. Hope both teams can win to the last game and play to see who goes to the B.C.S Game
Best played position | 2:01 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
The best played positions of the Washington game came from BYU's offensive line. Nothing got close to Max Hall and when it came to a running play their blocking was exceptional. They made Unga and Hall look good.
No More Celler Dwellers | 2:24 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Washington will finish ahead of AT LEAST Oregon State, Washington State, Stanford and Arizona in the PAC-10. They'll beat Notre Dame on October 25th and finish with a 5-7 record.
Clint in Florida | 2:32 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
The Ref did not lose the game for Washington, the quarterback broke the rule, not the Ref; and then Washington still had a chance to tie the score and the kicker choked. BYU blocked the ball but the kicker did have a chance to tie the game for Washington and jsu flat out choked. Great win BYU.
how come | 2:38 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
every win by a byu team turns into one against either an outstanding team or at an incredibly difficult stadium to play in? Funny, seems those excuses fly with losses too.
AzByuFan | 2:40 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Congrats! Well deserved for having a near flawless game. I am glad Hall is on BYU instead of the local team (ASU) down here.
Reading the BYU-haters whine and complain is always a good sign.
Heres hoping WA does well the rest of the year to make this win look even better.
Looking forward for the Fiesta Bowl, BYU vs Oklahoma.
To the fans at the UCLA game: cheer loudly!
WinSum | 3:19 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Max Hall is an outstanding QB...Harvey Unga is great...Dennis Pitta is great...all is well in Zion...? UCLA is next and Norm Chow is a great guy and former Cougar....best not read too many newspaper articles and just take them one at a time!!

Ute fans need to relax and cheer for the Utes and stop reading BYU articles....they seem to upset you!!!

Both schools are great rivals and that's great....!I hope both schools win this week. Two strong programs are better than one.....
michigan vs. washington | 3:19 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
yeah your right....washington probably would beat michigan....but who has a more storied program? who has the bigger stadium? michigan..... who's win looks better? which team got moved up in the rankings after their win? utah.......so byu fans can keep talking up the teams they played....northern iowa is gonna win the division 1-aa championship. washington has the loudest stadium in the country...blah blah blah.....
congratulations | 3:34 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
congratulations to Mr Hall
Anonymous | 3:36 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
The funniest part of this is all of the whY fans getting on the “the rule says this” soapbox, but had the situation been reversed, what tune would they be singing? I would be willing to bet it would be the same tune they always sing after a loss, and anyone who knows a Y fan knows what that is.

That being said, the whY caught a break and they continue to be undefeated. Just the way it is.

Next, without any regard to the outcome of this game, as this is just the best example of it in everyone’s mind right now, what ever the rule says it is completely absurd to punish a kid for being excited after a great play. There was nothing even close to being “Un-sportsmanship” in what this kid did and I think anyone could see that. This rule needs to be changed to something that actually makes sense and doesn’t punish someone for having “Pure” passion for the game.

The NCAA should be ashamed of themselves for this and all other occations where this penalty has been called just because a kid got excited, without letting “True” un-sportsmanship get out of hand.
To AzBBYU Fan | 3:37 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
Wow - "a near flawless game"?!?! Which game did you watch? Was it the one with Collie dropping passes left, right and sideways? The one where Unga fumbled at the goal line? The one where BYU's DB's were letting UW's receivers blow past them at will? Or was there some other BYU game on Saturday? Or are you just basing "near flawless" on the final score?
BoiseBYUFan | 3:41 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
I'm glad BYU beat Washington. I'm also glad Utah beat Michigan. I hope BYU beats Utah later in the season. But until then, I hope both teams go undefeated, climb in the rankings and earn the MWC some respect. As a conference we compete pretty well against outside schools and conferences that the national commentators treat like royalty.
AL | 3:43 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
It is interesting that the Yewt fans blog in here and critize BYU fans for getting their facts wrong about Michigan's record last season. It should be conceeded that if Michigan had a winning season that the Yewts played a better opponent than was suggested, even though they almost gave the game away to Michigan. However the yewts should also conceed that the PAC-10 officials made the right call when they called the unsportmanship penalty against Jake Locker. It is in the rulebook and should not be disputed. I do agree with some that maybe it needs to be reviewed, and maybe they should change it or eliminiate it. It is there though and the players are aware of it and therefore Locker made a bad decision and over celebrated. It also should not be blamed on the BYU players. If that same thing happened at RES you would not want to be blamed but you Yewts would sure take advantage of the W. So dry up.....already. It's over and can't be change, you're just being childish.

Congrats to Max Hall for the award, and good luck to BYU against UCLA.
Re: Pac 10 refs | 3:48 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
The officiating in the BYU / Washington game was far from perfect. But than again it seems that every close game is lost or won based on officiating.

I'll agree the officiating was less than perfect but what I saw on the field was far more discouraging. I saw a QB who could run up and down the field with ease, I saw this same QB airing it out for a TD. BYU's GREAT offense fumbled in the endzone! etc. etc.

Using my minds eye, I saw plenty of mistakes BYU made that made this game much closer than it should have been. I don't see why everyone is dishing the refs anyway since they pretty much setup the perfect situation for BYU to block the PAT that won the game! I for one hate to think what could have happened in overtime.

I like the Cougs, but they need to clean up the mistakes.
Ben | 3:59 p.m. Sept. 8, 2008
OK, I admit the win was not as impressive as it should have been, our defense made a ton of mistakes, but it was a win.

My issue is all of the Ute fans mightier-than-thou attitudes. They keep pointing at the fact that we played Northern Iowa while they played Michigan in their first game. They have no room to talk. Who do they have coming up on their schedule? The mighty Weber State from the mighty Big Sky conference. At least our I-AA team went 12-1 last year, their I-AA team only went 5-6 last year.

Neither school is playing anybody really great on their out of conference schedule. Utah's 2 good out-of-conference opponents are a little better than BYU's but neither team has an SOS worth bragging about. Do we really have to throw a bone to Utah St and play them when we could each be scheduling another opponent from a BCS conference to try to get some real respect?
