Respect from a "Utah Man" | 6:15 a.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I am a proud Utah alum, but I have to say how much respect I have for Coach Mendenhall for what he has done with BYU's football program. Not only is the team having success on the field, but he is doing great things with the men who are in that program. Very few of those who play in college will go on to a professional career, so what is left for them when college football is over? It's clear that the BYU players are getting an excellent education in leadership, setting priorities, and positive values from the school's church sponsor.
It's good for both schools that they are the best of the Mountain West, and that they are able to have success on a national scale against BCS programs. I'm looking forward to the final game of the season when, hopefully, two undefeated teams will duke it out for the conference title and a BCS bowl. I'll be rooting for BYU all along the way until that last game... :)
GO UTES!

I have personally attended one of these firesides. It was very inspiring and much more memorable than the game we won the next day. It is still one of my best memories of a Friday night in my life.
If anyone gets a chance to attend one, DO IT.

I thought I would see some negative comments by this time in the morning...But when you hear about people who genuinely want to live well and serve the Savior first, being from BYU or anyone else, it merits a lot of respect. I don't question the genuine nature of Bronco Mendenhall one bit. Go BYU today!

I'm gonna throw up. Again!

I'm LDS and I think I just threw up a little in my mouth. Bronco never ceases to amaze me with this stuff.

I did not know that BYU did this. I think that it would be a wonderful meeting to go to. To see the team in other ways besides on the field in a game. It would give a broader dimension to the team members and to put things more in prospective as you are watching the game

Hope he means it about that outcome of the game statement. I could use the win to save the program. Although, after viewing film of our first game and his I'd say we don't have a prayer and need divine intervention to even come close.

Even though I hate BYU athletics I do give props to what they try to do on the church-side of things with the firesides and other events, I wouldn't mind hearing a BYU speak in a church setting, (I bet they say less about their sports than some of the other speakers I've heard through the years.) Its always good to have important figures from the church speaking to the youth, so props must also go to coach Whit, Morgan Scalley and others at the U who do similar things all the time but never get the same pub as their BYU counterparts. All of you on both sides, keep up the good work and improve the faith!

How many more articles must we have that deal with Bronco's firesides? I think this is the 2nd or 3rd this week.
Idon't believe it | 12:35 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
ForBM to say that winning the game is not the most important thing this weekend is simply not true. I admire the man but not when he says things that simply do not ring true. Obviously if he is as close to his faith and his belief and his conviction then BYu will be national champions this year and forever --- NOT
I want to like like him and I want him to be successful but when he makes statements like this he comes across as such a hypocrite.

Hey Jed, you might want to get that checked. Sounds like something serious.

He added, "The only reason to have a football program at BYU is to bring people unto Christ."
How many converts come from playing Wyoming or any of the teams that hate BYU? Seems like it just fosters animosity. Why not schedule become independent and schedule several new teams each year? Or maybe there are "other" reasons for having BYU football.

Sorry, that's not his problem. Whether you believe or not is up to you.
It's a good question: if the Savior walked up to you and said, "leave it (whatever you thought was most important to you) and come follow me," could you do it?
More important than your job, your home, your prestiege, your ambitions? I like to think I would, I hope I would. I have no reason not to believe Bronco when he says that. I know people that new him in college, and they tell me he is the real deal, he lives what he says.
The stakes may be bigger now, but I believe him when he says the priorities are the same.

These fireside stories are over done! If Bronco really means what he says that most of these men won't have careers in football and he's teaching them about life after football, then how come we never hear about those men who have gone out and made something of themselves after football? All we ever hear about are the Steve Youngs and the Chad Lewis'!
