Snarky!
What a surprise... not | 5:23 a.m. Sept. 5, 2008
Heaven forbid a woman who aspires to national office not toe the liberal feminist line. She's even been accused by NOW of being more like a man. Sort of like every conservative black gets accused of being an Oreo.

I also don't believe that women should have the choice to murder unborn babies.

So predictable. Republican and/or conservative women have made as great as or greater strides than liberal women in political and social arenas in recent years. How do feminists treat them? Either by ignoring them or castigating them for not following the radical feminist agenda. Obviously these extremists care not so much for the chromosomal makeup of a person as their political views.

What is Ellen Goodman really saying? Between the lines, is she really saying that if you're not perfect, you don't have the right to live? Have we really turned into a monster society that allows only "socially approved" babies to be born?
Ms. Goodman doesn't expect much from young adults. She expects them to fail. Why is that? What in her own life makes her think that people can't control their personal appetites? Some claim that they can't. Some won't. Many do. Those who actually care about a girl friend or a boy friend would never do anything to bring shame or embarrassment or condemnation to that friend. Those who looking for a conquest might have other motives in mind.

It is all so orchestrated that it means little in revealing the candidates real self. Who is Sahra, probably not the hollywood script that she delivered so well, like a TV soap star. With today's commericial presentations they even make the dancing cigaretts look like our friends that are good for us. It is all politics and theater with animated actors who turn out to be terrible public servants. It is sad that we can not really believe a word they say.

I hate the way people like you talk. "Those who actually care about a girl friend or boy friend would never do anything to bring shame or embarrassment or condemnation to that friend." I heard that line so many times as a young woman at church. I was wracked with guilt to the point it nearly destroyed me. Yes, my then boyfriend and I made the mistake of becoming physically involved. I hate the assumption that he must not have loved me or vice versa because of our choice. I also knew that if I was going to engage in such behavior I'd better do all I could to avoid creating another life. In the end repentance was available for us just like all others and we were married 13 years ago and started a family a couple of years later. I love my husband and he loves me. You and people like you think you have a perfect understanding of human complexity because of the Gospel but you don't. I repeat, YOU DON'T!

If this lady really thinks as she wrote, "The idea was to connect to the Hillary Clinton supporters", then I think she is very mistaken and shallow in her analysis and assesment what happend and why.
Sure part of the motivation was probably to connect to Women voters (which is NOT the same demographic of "Clinton Supporters"). I don't believe all women voters are Clinton Supporters, but I think the Palin pick was intended to attract them BOTH to the McCain/Palin ticket.
I think the main motivation in the Palin pick was to give more credibility to the new topic of "Change in Washington" that was obviously going to be one of the main focuses at the GOP Convention and probably for the rest of the campaign.
I think Palin sold the message of change very well. I don't think it will be enough to save McCain's bacon, but it was probably the best choice he could have made. There were too many negatives associated with ALL the VP picks the media was kicking around in the days leading up to the convention.
Finally... Do I think Palin will turn into a Hillary Clinton clone if elected??? Absolutly not!

I for one wish that bright eyed, new "Washington outsider" John McCain the best of luck!

Simply put, today's "feminists" are merely a women's auxiliary to the left wing of the Democratic Party. They are not for advancing women's causes, nor do they mean to encourage women to succeed in politics. They want only to advance their own ideology, regardless of how that ideology affects the vast majority of women.
Listening to them or reading what they write is tiresome.

Ellen Goodman and her "Sex in the City" and "Mama Mia" gals get all goosey when a real American woman like Palin walks into the room. I agree with the first poster "snarky".

Man or woman, who cares? I'm scared of her policies, which would take this country right off the cliff edge. Foreign policy: Kill. Environment: Animals are for shooting. Energy policy: Drill. Scary.

@ 9:45,
I'm sorry if you were offended by my post. My intent was not to offend you personally. However, given your experience, what would you tell your children? Would you tell them that it's alright to sow some wild oats and then go through the process of repentance, or would you beg them to be obedient to God's law of morality and enjoy life to the fullest without the need to repent?
Love includes more than emotion. It includes devotion to doing what is best for the one you love. It includes protecting the one you love from all harm, physical or emotional. It should never include enticing or even allowing someone to do something where fear of being caught would bring shame.
There is enough evidence around that people don't have to drink poison to know that it's much better for their health to avoid drinking that poison.
People have been told for thousands of years to wait until after marriage before having sex. It's still good advice. There is no shame in waiting.

Your situational indignation never ceases to amaze me. Now you're on her case for being a hunter???
Do you not remember Obama going hunting with supporters early in the election? It may have just been a photo-op to appease the NRA but it doesn't matter. He went out shooting birds. Did you get equally outraged at BO when HE went hunting cameras in tow???
Didn't think so.
And drop the "I'm scared of the drill" bunk. BO and the rest of your party are going to have to give in on this one eventually (the vast majority of Americans are demanding it). So you and BO better not paint yourself too much into a corner on this one, because eventually you are going to need a plan-B that allows drilling, if BO wants to get elected. BO, Pelosi and Ried are already changing their tune little by little on this one, you need to keep up. They've gone from total opposition, to leaving the door open now. It won't be long before the focus groups indicate it's imperative that they change course on this (and they will).

That's the problem with people like you who steriotype people on sight. Admit it, anyone with an "R-" by their name would remind you too much of George W Bush.
Am I right?

Sounds like you are the one stereotyping people on sight (example: "people like you" directed toward someone you don't even know), 1:40 p.m. Maybe I'm tired of being told by every republican that they are the only ones who can save our country and the rest of us can go to you know where. Sheesh, Utah is annoying at election time, and this is coming form a Mormon! It hasn't been so ugly on the DN comment board since Mitt Romney was in the running for pres. I listened to her speech and that is the impression I got. Even I can admit that whoever becomes president will try to do a good job and our country will not be destroyed by either of them. Grow up!

You must admit, anybody is better than the bozos we've had for the last 8 years who have run this fine country into the ground, divided us all while all the while waving the flag and creating paranoia.

I didn't mean to make any judgements of you personally. You are right, I don't know you. I was just trying to point out the type of judgement illustrated in your statement. I shoudn't have made any assumptions about you and the logic you used to come to your conclusion.
My reply was intended to be more about your statement (not you) and the logic that leads to snap-judgements like that, but I can see I projected what I saw in that judgement style onto you. My bad.
My real point was... seeing Palin once on TV and already pigeon-holed her as "Just like Bush" (seemed like a pretty quick judgement that would require some pretty serious steriotyping after seeing just one speach).
You have to admit there are lots of aspects to Bush or any other individual and to claim they are alike from one speach seemed like a stretch to me.

I think Ms. Palin would be terrific at the local PTA in getting the right mixture of cookies and milk available at the functions.
Now, dealing with hardened, savvy world leaders with complex agendas, wants and needs of their own ... well, that would be another matter.

It is sad, but true: as bad as it is, Bush is smarter than McCain and Bush is more of a politicion than McCain and we can all see what Bush gave us so what McCain has in store for us will probably just about do us in. God bless America.

I think Sarah Palin is great! So what is she leans to the right. Not every woman wants someone who is very liberal, and I usually don't vote for many Utah Republicans! However, the far left is going just a bit too far to the left and I find Sarah Palin to be very refreshing. She is a real person who can relate to many of us.

All nations come to power and all sooner or later fall.
America is no different.
You know the end is near when preemptive wars are started based on bogus intelligence and motivation.
At least Senator Obama offers hope.

You do have a point. Maybe we all need to step back take a deep breath and look at the bigger picture. Try to see the opinions of others once in a while. I'm sure we are not all that different and most Americans tend to get along well enough in everyday life. There is just something about politics that doesn't always bring out the best in us. I apologize.

Lets just grab someone off the street with the conservative talking points. Oh thats what McCain did already.

Did Ellen Goodman really write that Palin was "unfamiliar as the tundra" in her first graph?
Simile's like that make me feel like a dog who has been snookered into a watermelon-eating contest.

Ellen Goodman's article goes to show that it is the liberal orthodoxy that is more important to liberal women than any other factor. Should John McCain pick woman for the rebublican presidential ticket that leans or falls left? Like so many others Goodman's comments are just more ad hominum attacks.

I would have been tempted to vote for maverick, independent thinking McCain. That is, until he picked Palin for his VP. She is farther right than Strom Thurmond, and I hope there are no women who vote for her simply because she's a woman.
You may not believe in abortion. That's your right under the constitution. But, the job of the president (who is to uphold the constitution) is to make sure religious beliefs aren't inserted into law. Even Catholics argue when the life of the baby begins. For eons there have been discussions about whether it's at conception or at 40 days. This is not the job of the government.
Palin has already been proven to be a liar. She took millions of dollars as "earmarks" when she was a mayor and now opposes them. She's taking credit for the Alaska Permanent fund which was in place before she ever was in office.
And mean and nasty and snide. That's not necessary, and shouldn't be applauded.
