What happened with the driver and are they responsible to pay any bills and did there insurance cover anything?
It's not just drivers... | 1:20 p.m. Sept. 4, 2008
This morning I was driving on 2100 South in Sugarhouse (4 lanes) when I saw the drivers from the other direction stopping for the pedestrians at a crosswalk - so I stopped as well. A man and a woman walked across from the other side of the road. I was in the left lane and there still wasn't anybody in the right lane next to me when the pedestrians passed in front of me. Neither one of them even glanced in the direction of me or the lane next to me, which still didn't have a vehicle stopped.
While I agree that when pedestrians are in a crosswalk, the driver would be at fault if they were hit. But, for self preservation, it would be a good idea to at least act like you're aware of your surroundings when crossing the street.

Intriguing questions Anonymous. It happened three years ago. Perhaps a search into the archives might provide the answer.

It was under these same circumstances (one car stops at the crosswalk for pedestrians to cross while another car maneuvers around to pass illegally) that resulted in the death of my Dad back in 1996. He was in the crosswalk on South Campus Drive at the U of U. He had the right of way. He had looked both ways and waited until traffic stopped for him. Witness accounts prove that, however, this tragic accident still happened and I lost my Dad while I was a teenager. When I read of other auto vs pedestrian accidents that result in deaths or injuries it literally makes me sick. If we can all be a little more aware of our surroundings we could prevent so many of these needless tragedies. As a migraine sufferer myself, it breaks my heart to know that this young man has to cope with these awful headaches as a result of his injuries. And can you imagine losing your sight if even for just a temporary time? And this mother has to bear the physical and emotional pain every day needing a leg amputation! Heartbreaking. They are in my prayers.

Our health insurance IS in crisis. You never know what's going to happen, until it happens to you....and why would a young mother have to wait so long to get the rest of the care she needs?
Bridger will be well taken-care-of. I'd like to suggest a trust fund for this young family, too.
