I don't think he really was the best of singers, but his songs were real life, and sure stuck with me. I remember listening to Country Joe at KSOP radio when Jerry Reed's songs were new. As I read the titles, lyrics came to mind. Even the one that's never played anymore: "The last thing she gave me was the bird". (Talking about a parrot that talked too much and gave away the man's cheating and so the wife rightly threw him out of the house - and gave him the bird.)

Those were the good old days when life was good and truckin was wide open. He wasn't the best of singers but he did brighten the spirits of many a driver that was out on the road doing the best he could. It was the great American Road Race. In order to make any money you would have to run flat out(as fast as your rig would go) to your destination unload and go again. My Peterbilt conventional would do 77 MPH maxed out at 2200 rpm's. That was pretty good in the 70's but after the 55 mph speed limit came back it was surely a pain. That's when the C B radio became necessary for the truckers. Life would have been very dull without C W McCall and Smokey and the Bandit and Jerry Reeds songs. Keep on Truckin !
