Viewmont all the way. You can't contain them you can only hope to contain them!
QB | 8:08 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
That QB at Northridge looks to be the real deal. He can run and throw under pressure. Haven't seen any QB's in the state who can do that.

So, welcome to the "Game of the Week" but is that Alta/Bingham or Layton/Cottonwood or maybe Skyline/East?

It's hard to get pumped about anybody playing an out of state team that we know zero about.

I am SO happy games have started, looks to be an exciting year already.

Alta, Bingham | 8:10 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Based on last weeks performance by both schools.

Alta 7, Bingham 42

No time to lick any wounds for the Rams because A.F is legit and could run us off the field like last year. Go Rams! Got Some Revenge for last Year!

Moving Pleasant Grove from 10 to 13 after the Vikings BEAT timpview is ludicrous. Yes, the refs called back two touchdowns and YES the final score showed timpview on top 10-6, but everyone in HS football circles know PG beat timpview, in spite of the final score. In this game, scoreboard only meant some refs are still learning the game of football. Unlike college football, the Desnews HS rankings are fun, but they won't determine who the region champs are, nor the state champs.
wow | 8:49 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
you put bountiful above snow canyon who barely lost to east bountiful didnt score a point region 5 is gonna be way down this year trust me
Fan | 8:50 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Cottonwood and Layton is definitely the GAME OF THE WEEK. #3 vs. #4 in state sounds better than #1 vs.#7 in state. Winner of the two should be ranked #1 in my opinion or are we still on that Alta, Bingham, and Timpview being the greatest programs ever to exist in the planet tip...
Anonymous | 8:56 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
What ever happened to ranking the top 5 in each class? "I think the New York Giants should be ranked over Provo high".
Re QB | 9:01 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Did you see the Northridge/Jordan game? Jordan's quarterback looked just as good.
Re:Alta, Bingham | 9:11 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
What a joke! Same guy was on here last week sporting a Bingham 50 Skyline 0! I see you Minors have big mouths, and haven't learned how to leave it on the field! Bingham season is over! Kill them Hawks!
Re:Re: QB | 9:33 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
He lost
Re: Alta,Bingham | 9:37 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Sorry,

Alta 3, Bingham 55

The Layton Cottonwood game will be good, and Cottonwood is no Bonneville, they are actually a football team. Cottonwood will put Layton in their place and then Layton will shut their mouths. Viewmont shouldn't even be mentioned, they beat Orem by what? 4 points? haha get real. I still think Bingham will take it to Alta but it will be a close game. Skline will beat East by at least two touchdowns. Teams to look out for in 5A: PG, Davis, Northridge, Jordan, and maybe Riverton?? HS football is the best time of year no doubt
Re: Alta,Bingham | 9:41 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Kill them Hawks? You want Bingham to kill the hawks?
Dog | 10:01 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Is it just me or could these omniscient "sportswriters" who make the rankings be just a little prejudiced..or maybe just stupid..Friday's game at Bountiful Lone Peak 21 Bountiful 0, today's rankings Bountiful 21 Lone Peak 22...Hmmmm?!
Jordan | 10:01 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Jordan has a good chance of loosing their first 4 games. Not a good sign for a QB.
rick mohison | 10:15 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
To Coachc:

You sound like a bitter person, my friend. NO, PG DID NOT beat Timpview and the score is the score. Using your logic, Timpview could say that all of the ludicrous penalties they were given contributed to the low score as well. Just because your player scored a potential winning touchdown that was brought back because of DOUBLE penalties on the same play does not mean PG beat Timpview. I know it's a hard pill to swallow but your team sim-ply did not win. I am so sorry!
RE: DOG | 10:26 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Obviously you don't get it. Just because Lone Peak beat Bountiful doesn't all of a sudden make them better in the rankings! It is an overall thing. Each writer ranks them and you get 25 points for being ranked 1st and 1 point for being ranked 25th. Then they add up all the points and that is how they have this ranking! So in reality, some of the writers probably put Lone Peak over Bountiful, just not all of them. If you are going to comment on the board, then please, try and make it somewhat intelligent.
Re Coachc | 10:58 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I'm a PG Fan. I agree with Rick. The score is the score and that's how the game is going to be judged. PG had many opportunities to score, put the game away, but had some horrific play calling in the Red Zone. TV pulled it out and that’s why they came out with the victory.

GO PG!!!!!!
High School Football! | 11:19 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
This is the best time of the year, but I'm getting tried of all the trash talk. If you believe your team is the best then play the best...Alta, Layton, Timpview, Skyline, Cottonwood and MAYBE bingham. You should schedule each other and battle it out on the field that way EVERYONE will know who's the best of the best! Maybe the 5A and 4A champs should play for any all around State Champ.
re: rick and coachc | 11:55 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
you can make an argument for both. going on score timpview won. going on play, time of possesion, time spent on the other teams half of the field and total yards then i'd give it to pg. even timpview realizes they got out of there lucky but good teams sometimes make their own luck. i wouldn't call the holding penalties against timpview ludicrous basically because that's what they do and everyone knows it. is it still holding if you don't get caught? also it wasn't a double penalty, it was the same penalty that they called 2 different things. i need to watch the game again because i've heard that the sideline ref, the female, boned pg on that play.
still it was a good game. i don't think pg should have dropped in the rankings, if anything they should have stayed where they were at.
Jeff | 12:03 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
You all should get lives. Its high school football. Nothing to get riled up about or excited about unless you are on the team or a parent of a player. I'm a huge sports fan but high school football is just a bunch of pre-pubescent teens running around. Not good football.
Homer | 12:42 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Hilarious that you rank Bountiful ahead of Lone Peak after Lone Peak beats them 21-0 in week one...not like there are other games to look at.
Wildcats rule! | 12:44 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Who are we?

THE WILDCATS!

Who are we going to beat?

THE WILDCATS!
Re: Jeff | 1:02 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
This is why we are on a High school forum. Being a parent, student, or just a fan, we all enjoy and support high school football. Many would agree that high school football is the foundation for many of the NFL players you are cheering for. It sounds like you are in the wrong place and need to only make comments in the area where you are a huge fan.

Thanks!
Uhhhhhh..... | 1:22 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Jeff, It seems to me you're the one that needs to get a life. If HS football doesn't interest you, why are you on this message board ?? It doesn't seem to me you would know good football if it landed on your shoulders.
Come On Now | 1:27 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Skyline Will Lose this Friday! Guarantee!
Re: Come on Now | 2:25 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Skyline will not lose to east this week, they might Lose to Highland next week. East is weak this year and go lucky to beat a bad snow canyon team. It was Adam Timo against East and he almost won by himself. Skyline beat Bingham and I don't care if they were missing some starters, they are Bingham and have about 200 Players to chose from on the team get things done. Skyine will Beat East with no problem. And my Kid doesn't even play at Skyline, so Bias here. Skyline 35 East 17.
Taylorsville? | 2:30 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
No T-ville in the Top 25? What the ...?!?!?
What? | 2:58 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I'm an angry parent. Timpanogos almost beat a highly ranked Riverton team, why aren't we ranked now? I call party foul! Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
BEST WEEK OF FOOTBALL | 3:03 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
GUYS THIS IS THE BEST WEEK OF FOOTBALL. NOT ONLY DO WE GOT GREAT UTAH MATCH UPS IN COTTONWOOD AND LAYTON BUT WE GOT MATCHES OUT OF STATE ALSO. JORDAN IN OHIO, PV VS COMPTON. NORTHRIDGE VS CRESPI, HURRICANE VS SOME ARIZONA TEAM. GREAT WEEK
Coach Brady | 3:14 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
ALTA 33, Bingham 14

Sorry Miners but you're gonna be 0-2...
just an observation | 4:03 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I saw the game between Timpview and Pleasant Grove. PG really won the game, but had a touchdown called back and also could not seem to conjure up a play to score within the 10 yard line though they had ten tries.

Point is, if Timpview is the second best team in the State, Utah football is in trouble. They had at least one miscue such as a motion penalty in nearly every series. They never really threatened to score but the one drive and a field goal.
5A vs 4A | 4:12 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Timpview and Cottonwood, the class of 4A, pulled off wins. Granger beat the worst 5A team in the state, but 5A went 8-3(262-145. 2 or 3 of the 4A teams could compete in 5A just fine, but enough with the 4A is as good as 5A.

American Fork 33, Provo 14
Copper Hills 40, Payson 12
Hillcrest 31, Olympus 20
Layton 20, Bonneville 0
Lone Peak 21, Bountiful 0
Syracuse 31, Roy 6
Viewmont 34, Orem 28
Weber 29, Box Elder 0
funny how | 4:19 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I commented on last weeks rankings "screwed up rankings" and I was right with the expection of the position of Timpview and Layton. Glad to be right
Oh little Jeffy | 4:27 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Sounds like someone forgot to chose little Jeffy at recess. Lets change that, come and join one of these top 25 High School teams ,I'm sure we would all get a good long laugh. You wuold get hurt by these kids that play "Not Good Football".
Football ONLY site | 4:40 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Remember fans, the Deseret News Fall High School section is reserved for FOOTBALL ONLY coverage. Holy Cow DNews, cover something other than Football in your stories. It is like 100-1 for football. There are other fall sports such as volleyball and soccer which are pretty big.
Prep football fan | 4:46 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
First of all, Jeff you are a(n) (Insert word that offends Jeff, but still gets my comment posted) If you played high school football you played for a bad coach, because you obviously have no idea of the complexity of the offenses and defenses that many high schools run today, and have for years.

On another note, I am a Jordan fan, and will admit that they could start out 0-4. However, that is because of their schedule: N-Ridge, Massilon Ohio, Layton and Bingham. They could start out 0-4 and still be good enough to make it to the semis. I'm not saying they will, I'm just saying that they still could be good enough. It has happened, Lone Peak has done it.
Lancer | 5:13 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I am a Layton fan and hope they win this week. But, I can honestly say, after watching them play last week. They are nothing compared to last years team, they are week on the line. I am Lancer Blue, but if I was a betting man I would put my Money on Cottonwood this week. You can't compare this years team to last years team.
Isn't it great . . . | 5:13 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
that anything can happen in sports. Credit to Timo for a great first half while East was figuring things out. But I think even Timo would agree it wasn't the same team playing in the second half that he played in the first. Enjoy the security of foregone conclusions while you can Skyline.
Layton 35 Cottonwood 0 | 5:48 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
From what I've seen, Layton's "D" will crush Cottonwood. And Cottonwoods "d" is just not capable of stopping the Layton Freight Train. Chugga chugga chuuchuuu
Todd | 6:08 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
If you really care about what you are ranked then just keep winning games. If you really think you are part of the elite teams in Utah then be perfect. Its as simple as that. Don't start going nuts because of your ranking after one game. Oh and Viewmont narrowly beating Orem by four points was no surprise to me. Cottonwood is tough Layton, here comes for first loss. N Ridge is ridiculously solid, and Davis still wont have a real challenge until the Hawa'ii team week three. Timpview ranked 26 in the nation after that game? If they are going to get that much national credit, they need to rep Utah better.
re:re: come on now | 6:43 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
looking at saturdays game they won't lose to highland either. I'm just excited for skyline alta that will be a heck of a game
Anonymous | 6:43 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Timpview is ranked high nationally because of their recruits and recent history..

they did receive a decent amount of national publicity for Utah (SI article last year) so you other fans should be grateful for that and not slamming them.

they aren't as good this year, but they have earned the right to be ranked where they are for the time being.. the season will play itself out..

In the end, teams like Layton, Jordan ect fizzle out.. Win a state championship on any level than talk, otherwise no criticizing the Timpview's, Skyline's and recently Alta and Binghams which have actually won something.
Anonymous | 7:24 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I think that Cottonwood will edge the win over layton. but only because Layton is without their star RB Jackson.

Cottonwood 41
Layton 35

go judge! woooooooooo
re:Football only | 7:47 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Well the desnews gives the people what they want. Have you been to a volleyball game lately and seen how many fan are there? If you don't count the parents, your lucky to get into the double digits. Now compare that to a football game where a set of huge bleachers is jampacked with fans. That is the reason you don't see highschool volleyball on t.v. or on the radio. I think it is great to support other sports but i dont think the rest of utah feels the same.
re:re: football | 7:59 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Goes to show you why soccer will never overtake watching paint dry. Man I had the choice to watch soccer in the olympics and watching a half gallon of Home Depots finest dry on my garage door. Man there were just as many great plays on garage door that day.
BHS | 8:07 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
bingham will be the 5A state champions at the end of the season
