While it's good that comments are made about summer jobs teaching the value of hard work, it's unfortunate that there are comments made disparaging the "menial jobs". One should never look down their nose at those who do hard honest work for lower pay. The reasons for a person taking that kind of job are as myriad as the number of people doing the work. You just never know why someone is doing what they do and making negative assumptions about someone's job is not helpful. Just because someone is in an upper class situation is no cause for being negative about someone else doing a job that some might find distasteful. We should never ever criticize someone for working hard, putting forth a good effort. Not everyone has the same advantages or support system that privileged people seem to expect. It's best to be encouraging and not take away someone's hope by talking about the menial job they have.

Be careful about labeling a job as "menial." Unless you are wealthy, you will spend much of your home life doing such things as cleaning, washing clothing, ironing, yard work, cooking.
Call these jobs menial if you will, but they comprise the maintenance of living.

When things get tough, those who know how to do "menial" jobs are the ones who get by. Working with one's hands is not a sin.
