yeah its good that they have a bunch of starters but ive seen teams returning a bunch and crumbling under expectations and pressure. plus their lineman look like running backs and that can only get you so far

yeah its good they're returning alot of players, but i've seen teams returning a big number of players only to crumble under expectations and pressure. plus you can only get so far with an offensive line that looks like a bunck of running backs.

This is Riverton’s best chance to make a run at state title before their school is split. But they do lack depth. (Not talent). If Davis, their quarter back gets injured there is no one to fall back on. They have sophomore that played as a freshman but he lacks the skills at this time to compete at the varsity level. From what I understand there were two sophomores last year that had better skill sets but they were converted to defense. One has transferred and the other one has no real role on the team even though he is a good overall athlete. I was told this was coaching decision as the coaches’ feel that their junior class is weak and the sophomore quarterback played for Coach Fullmers youth team the year prior to Coach Fullmer joining the staff at Riverton.
He is part of the Fab 5 as the kids like to call them that played as freshman last year.
I guess all 5 freshmen played for Fullmers youth team the year prior. Their third string quarterback is a junior who played wing back last year.

They have a good group of running backs with Dillion and halfback and Zack at
Fullback. Plus they have a group of young men within there program who can
play at this spot even though some of them may be under sized.

The offensive and defensive lines could be their real weakness as they lack depth and they are undersized as Coach Miller loves to emphasize every year. They do have some incoming sophomores that have size but are not really ready to plat at the varsity level.

Overall the offense may be the strength of this team. Defensively they have a strong secondary and a couple of good linebackers. As mentioned above their line may be a little undersized. Riverton coaching staff should look at changing their over/under – 43 next year and look at 3-4 defense to take advantage of their speed and lack of size on the line Crawford with a little work and conditioning could anchor the nose and they have plenty of kids with speed that could play the hybrid safety/linebacker positions required to really make that defense go.

Riverton’s real weakness is the drop off is from their ones to their twos. This has always been Millers problem. There is plenty of talent at Riverton but he and his staff don’t
develop weaker players. There are always kids that with a little work could turn out to be
real contributors and great role players and that is how you create the depth needed to sustain an elite program. They are always looking down the pipe to who’s coming up rather than taking advantage of the players that are already in program. Maybe I am stuck in the old days when only way freshmen and sophomores played varsity was either due to injury of the upper classmen or they had to be exceptional athletes that had to earn it.

This group of seniors has done nothing but win their whole lives. I'm not saying that they will take state, I think that is a stretch. But they just know how to win, and with their offense, the line doesn't need to be big. The lack of size may hurt them defensively. I wouldn't be surprised to see these guys in the semis, but I would be surprised to see them go any farther than that.

One other thing that could raise its ugly head is chemistry. There are a lot of issues surrounding the younger kids being brought up and the comments made by the coaching staff regarding the abilities of the juniors currently in the program. If enough of the kids have negative feelings that could become divisive if things don’t go as planned.
Fab 5 | 1:35 p.m. Aug. 15, 2008
How many championships did that Fab 5 win in that youth program? If I recall correctly, they were worked by Bingham year in and year out.
page | 1:56 p.m. Aug. 15, 2008
they don't have any depth Riverton's the biggest school in the state something is wrong.
poor riverton | 2:09 p.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Even if riverton returned all their players they still wont be able to win any state game..lets be real here..every year they think they can beat the best but as always they fall short. Yes they make it into the semi finals but will NOT go all the way and if they dont have a line then they are really doomed, i dont know if you realise this but its the guys up front that make team without the OLINE men there is no game.......

I need to learn how to post what mess(rookie) I agree the semis are a realistic goal. All I was trying to say is that thier school will split in 2010 and this class is the srogest according to Miller he has had. In regards to the my comments on the Fab 5 that is just name that the boys at my house were using the other night and I don't think the term is being used in a way that indicates their abiltiy to play trust me. It sounds as if there are internal issues but I don't want to get into the political bull that occurs in high school sports. We all know the best do not always play. I agree you can have all the skill players in the world but if you don't have a line it does not matter and they do not need to be big just quick and strong. I was linemen when I played. Our enrollment is the largest and we have a ton a kids come out but I don't feel Miller and his staff look to find the diamonds in the rough so to speak.

Wow 200 words goes fast.Anyway we have a lot of talent just standing on our sidleines that never sees the field. I understand this not little league and everyone does not get to play. But something is wrong when we can even get out the first round.
Our region is getting stronger we may actualy have to earn a spot in the playoffs. Kearns is getting stronger coach Cosper has done a great job turning his program around and West Jordan may become a little stronger after the split and the boundry realignment. Who knows if the new high school will turn into a winnig program quickly given all the growth in that area. By the way I have been involved in Rivertons youth program since it started so yes I understand the kids involved and all the connections and other stuff that is involved. I just wish the team a graet year and GO WOLVES!

riverton is going down friday... and the whole team is winners..... when was the last time you guys won a playoff game
From California | 10:42 a.m. Aug. 16, 2008
Trust Coach Miller. He is building more than teams. He is building men. Before he came to Riverton, there were no wins.
Who cares who the QB is? | 3:20 p.m. Aug. 16, 2008
All they need a QB for is to hand off the ball. The "three yards and a cloud of dust" mentality that has become Riverton football the past few years will turn into another 6-4 record this year and a first round exit like usual. They will beat teams that they are supposed to do like they always do, and they will lose to the likes of PG, Jordan, Bingham, and either Kearns or Hunter. (They will split their last two games.)

It's easy to see really. It's just a different year.
The Wolf | 2:50 p.m. Aug. 17, 2008
riverton will win state this year with their eyes closed. . and their hands tied behind their back. Alta, bingham, skyline, layton and all them will have no chance to even compete with riverton this year. Bring It Go Wolves!!!!!!!!!!!!
the wolf must be kidding | 3:20 p.m. Aug. 17, 2008
riverton has no chance of hanging a region banner
( now that's funny stuff) this year in football..period
hey California | 4:24 p.m. Aug. 17, 2008
Before Miller came to Riverton we played the likes of Davis and Clearfield, now replaced by Hillcrest and Taylorsville. The winning record is only indicative of padding schedules and weak region opponents, nothing more. The Wing T will finally be put to rest after this season, a few years too late to help my boy, but good riddance none the less. That trickery works on the small school scale but doesn't belong in 5A. Our QB has a great arm but the fodder wing t doesn't require that so I agree with previous post, (who cares?).
Fully Invested | 5:22 p.m. Aug. 17, 2008
For those who say that Riverton is only "three yards and a cloud of dust" you had better show up to watch some games this year because I guarantee you will see something much different. As for the wing-t bashing, it must work -- the number one ranked high school football team in the nation runs the wing-t. Not to mention that the high school that Alex Smith and Reggie Bush attended ran the wing-t.
Re: The Wolf | 6:05 p.m. Aug. 17, 2008
haha. good one. riverton wont even make it to the playoffs again. just wait 5 days to see them lose to timpanogos. and who cares if the number one high school team runs the wing t, riverton cant run it.
Fully Invested | 6:28 p.m. Aug. 17, 2008
How would you know if Riverton can't run the wing-t. I went to the Timpanogas game last year when a bunch of juniors beat your mighty Timberwolves with the wing-t. I hate to see what those juniors are going to do to them this year as seiors. What people don't understand is that when you have no size on your line, the best way to offset that is to run the wing-t with its pad-level, and blind-side blocking. Don't rip on a philosophy when you know nothing about it.
Fully Invested | 7:28 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
The only problem is the teams he's playing against now have huge lines. The wing T will work with smaller teams. But he's facing massive lines with Bingham. They should have been passing the ball vs Bingham last year, but instead stuck with a useless Wing T offense, and what did it get them? It worked for him at Olympus because he was playing in a smaller division. He's in the big time now though, he needs to lose the gimmicky offense.
Wing T | 10:34 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
I am a player that played against riverton last year they are a great group of guys and do not trash talk or any thing. But the problem with them is they need to change the Wing T offense it is garbage and gets them no where really.
Hey - this group | 11:16 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008
This group of seniors has done nothing but finish behind Bingham their whole lives is how you should have put it. The only time they ever finished in front of the mighty Miners is when ALL there studs where playing with the high school as freshman. I hope they play better this year when they play Bingham this year - Bingham's starters would like to play past half time. GO MINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fully Invested | 12:17 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Fully invested @ 7:28a.m. get you own name. I'll say it again very clearly. The Wing-T is not the problem! If you want to call it garbage that's you perogative, but keep in mind that Helix High School, De Lassalle, Belle Vue, and alot of other California, Washington, and Texs High Schools run the Wing-T. Those are BIG TIME programs with lines that are not only huge, but fast. Maybe it's how they are implimented, but I do agree that there is a problem in Riverton. (Big time? Come ooon!!!)
The Wolf | 1:22 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Riverton will stomp Bingham and Alta this year. Just wait and see. Everyone else needs to go home and watch riverton walk all over state this season

So this wasn't your post? "What people don't understand is that when you have no size on your line, the best way to offset that is to run the wing-t" Thanks for proving my point by pointing out those other schools all have huge lines. It works if you have the size and go against smaller schools. What didn't you get? Miller implemented it ok at Olympus? Did he forget how once he came to Riverton? He needs to change that scheme to what his personnel can handle. You might as well have Bojak over there again running his veer or whatever it was he ran.
Fully Invested | 11:11 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008
Don't put words in my mouth. I said nothing about other schools having huge lines. What I said was Riverton always has notoriously small lines. As such it only makes sense to run the Wing-T. It must have some credibility to it since they beat the team with one of the largest defensive lines in the state last year.(Timpanogas)

You can run just about any offense you want. That's not what makes you a good coach. What makes a good coach is how he implements that offense and adapts it to the strength of his players. To say that an offense is a joke just tells me that you know nothing about coaching, let alone the game of football.
Fully Invested @ 11:11 | 7:17 a.m. Aug. 19, 2008
hmm, Guess this wasn't yours either then. "Those are BIG TIME programs with lines that are not only HUGE, but fast." Yeah, I put words in your mouth alright.
Also to Fully Invested @ 11:11 | 7:21 a.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Again, I guess he forgot how to implement it since he was successful with it at Olympus. Enjoy another 6-5 year with a gimmick of an offense, and having it handed to you by the bigger stronger lines in the state like Bingham.
Riverton Fan | 7:23 a.m. Aug. 19, 2008
I will agree with the comments above. The Wing T offense is series based and very adaptable. It is not the offensive system that makes a great coach but how the coach implements his system based on the personal he has. The Wing T demands attention to detail and execution is key, not size. I have been involved with Riverton Football since Miller arrived at our High School with much fan fare. But after several years one thing became vary clear. His teams do not execute come crunch time, they appear sloppy. Not just on offense but overall.
Riverton Fan | 8:06 a.m. Aug. 19, 2008
The Wing T can be as diverse of an offense as you want. Miller appears to be more of a traditionalist. I know they will open up the offense more this season than in years past but I don’t think that will solve the problems at Riverton. There is something wrong when 70 kids try out as soph’s and less than half return their junior year. I won’t go into all the details, but I should have listened when I sat next to parent at a varsity game the year before my son started at Riverton and she recommended that I transfer my son to Bingham or Jordan High School.
You're Killing Me!! | 11:58 a.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Riverton you are killing me! Among several other hilarious statements throughtout the newspapers, a post earlier states that you will "stomp Alta & Bingham this year" and "win state with their eyes closed and their hands tied behind their back". I seriously haven't stopped laughing since I read that. You can't really believe that! Year in and year out, Riverton is nothing more than average. Sure they do ok in their region, but lets get serious aside from Bingham Region 3 is a doormat. Then, if and when they do make it to the playoffs, it's one and done. Correct me if I'm wrong, you've NEVER won a play-off game! I know your hanging your hats on your 17 returning starters. Give me a break, they were average last year, and average every year they've played. Trust me, nobody is sweating their game against Riverton!! In the meantime though, keep talking smack because it's very entertaining! Also, enjoy that #18 (that's right 18 ranking) and know that the more you brag, the more of a laughing stock you become!! By the way, the region banner comment earlier is probably the funnest thing of all!! So true!
Hey foolishly invested | 6:12 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008
Explain to me how Riverton with the biggest enrollment is so small on the line. Look in the hall any day to see that we grow them just as big here. Could it be that when Miller came he proclaimed for all prospects to hear that he didn't want or need a big line, he was going to utilize small but fast guys. Big payoff huh? Breaks my heart every game I watch us lose to real football teams and have to hear how we are small but fast.
Fully Invested | 1:45 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
I never said I liked Miller, only the Wing-T. I was a student of the Wing-T long before Miller arrived. It is a great offense if you have a small line, but if you have a large, fast line it is that much better. Maybe you need to explain better why the big boys in Riverton don't want them. You make it sound like Miller doesn't want them. I know that's not true since he walks the halls asking the big kids at Riverton to play football. He never said he didn't want a big line. Once again, I am a fan of the Wing-T, but in Riverton I might as well be a fan of the run and shute as well as the program has done. When this year's seniors were sophomores there were 60+ of them. Of that 60 there are now 20. Something definitely needs to change; I don't know what , but something.
Fully Invested | 10:06 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
What needs to change at Riverton is that offense, it's not working with what personnel they have there. You might as well bring Bojak back for as well as it's currently running.
Riverton Fan | 11:40 a.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Fully Invested @ 10:06 am It's not the offeseive system we run or the defensive system. The size of our linemen, or any of the other variables. When you have the largest enrollment in the state and you have been at that school for five years by now your teams should be senior leden. I am not saying you play seniors because thier seniors. I am saying your best players should be seniors becuase they entered a system where thier skills are developed and team unity is built. We honnor our senoirs at last game of the year. I think we may have had ten players on the field last year if that. Read between the lines there is something else wrong. We have tons of kids (60,70) enter the program by the time thier seniors we have less than twenty. I do not know if this common at other schools but I know at my high school you busted your but if were good enough you could start varisty as a junior, I do not remeber any soph's. Good or bad there was system in place and you were thought how to play their way.
The Wolf | 2:02 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
No im not kidding you. . riverton has it all this season and nobody is going to stop us. Your probably from bingham or alta and are just mad cause you know its true. we will see what happens to our stock when we stomp all over everyone this year.
Riverton Fan | 2:59 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
To the Wolf, I love your enthusiasm. If you’re going to dream big you might as well shoot for the stars and who knows, you may land on the moon.
So what heck let start kicking butts on Friday and show every one were for real!
P.S. I don't care what banner is hanging in the gym. I want a trophy for the case!

GO WOLVES!
The Wolf | 7:42 p.m. Aug. 20, 2008
Hey . . we need believers out here in riverton. We need support so when we do meet Bingham or Alta we can show them whats up. Cant wait to see the WOLVES run all over the "top rated" teams this year. We ready so bring the rain.
RHS | 5:15 p.m. Aug. 25, 2008
Riverton made it to either the quarterfinals or the semifinals in like 2003 or 2004. In the regular season they went 7-3 and won either 1 or 2 games in the playoffs so get the facts right they have won a playoff game before!! but anyways riverton is in its 10th year and it takes 10 to 20 years to develop a good program. our first coach was a good guy but his coaching style wasn't good at all. So RHS brings in Coach Miler and its on his 5th year and they have gone from 1 or 2 wins in a season to 6 and a playoff birth for three seasons in a row. Give Coach miller more time to keep getting better. Riverton has a very talented senior class and they will be very successful this year. good luck RHS!!!
