Barack Obama, what a joke! He's fake. He's not even "black" he just says that to be electible. What a lie...and you accuse Mitt?
Re; Mile High | 7:36 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
You are right! Folks, you read it here first! Hillary ain't done yet!

If McCain doesn't pick Mitt I'm writing him in as President come Nov. I'm not writing alone.
Indiana | 7:51 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
To Chris Corwin:

Excuse me? You have no idea what I read or don't read. You have now idea what kind of person I am, my current church calling or the extent to which I read or understand or teach the scriptures.

You are demeaning calling him "Mittens". You use the immature, cutesy little demeaning terms such as Republicrats and DemoRats to describe people. You want to quote prophets and scriptures, yet I do not think you understand them (or much else) properly.

I do not trust you to know what you are talking about.
As a registered Democrat | 8:21 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
I'm disappointed in this. Honestly, can't they think of better things to be doing with their time than knock a possibly-but-probably-not VP candidate? With all the talk McCain is doing against Obama...and the fact that the Dems still need to campaign for a win in November. I'm completely bewildered as to why the Dems really bothered. If any Dem leaders are reading: Keep your eye on the ball!
The Napalm of Your Hand | 8:31 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
To Registered Democrat: This defoliating practice is known as the politics of personal destruction made popular and necessary by Bill Clinton all the while he publicly decried its useage.
Choose between Two | 8:37 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Glenda, a vote for anyone other than the party nominee is a wasted vote and, in this case, a vote for Obama, or whoever they hoist up the flagpole.

Principle is one thing giving the bulls the key to the china shop is another.
Peace Offering | 8:42 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
To Chris Corwin and Indiana cool your jets and hold your grenades. Like most of us you know just enough to get yourselves into trouble.

While this political season may not be fun it will be interesting.
Reality Check | 9:03 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Romney uses the church to get votes?

Like him or not, the man is a brilliant businessman... Even he can do the math and see that a million or two LDS church votes aren't nearly enough.

Plus it's the electoral college that actually elects the president.

Liar? Funny... Like him or not, the man is one of the foremost leading moral figures in American Politics at this time.

Those who whine about Romney trying to solely get the LDS vote, are uneducated and apparently just thinking in an anti-LDS manner...

Politics are interesting. They seem to bring out the worst in people, when in reality, our nation is drifting apart because of the biased attitudes of individuals are unaccepting of different points of view.

Stock up on your food storage. Get out of debt...

It's going to be a bumpy ride!
To all you Mitt Haters | 9:11 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008

I am ashamed by the unprofessional journalism that is allowed to enter to this newspaper. Yes, it is a right-winged newspaper, but this sounds more like commentary by political pundits than actual journalism. I guess it is what Deseret News or the journalist itself feels that is necessary to sell papers.
Seen the video several times | 10:19 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
John Pack Lambert,

"Where and when did Romney say this alleged line about God not having spoken to man since Moses, and what is the fuller context of what he said."

Romney was asked by a Boston News Station, "Should God speak to you and ask you to do something that might be in conflict with your duties as president or should he speak to your Prophet who would speak to you - how would you make that decision, how would you handle that?

Mitt Romney answered by saying "I don't recall God speaking to me. I don't know that he has spoken to anyone since Moses and the bush or perhaps some others."

As a Mormon I do RECALL God speaking to the Prophet Joseph Smith, and to Latter-day Prophets.

"Just because you can lift a set of words out of someone's text does not mean that they are saying what you think."

That's exactly what he said and you can see him saying it. I have watched the video several times and get upset with the APOSTATE everytime I .

"We need context not accusations."

You should already know. If you don't you don't need context.
You belittle prayer and gospel | 10:45 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
INDIANA,

"As one LDS rm to another, don't be so disgustingly condescending. I researched him extensively before I decided to work for him."

It's you who is being condescending and calling him disgusting and accusing him of accepting vile lies for pointing out Romney's fundamental character flaws.

"I found a generous man that sent kids on missions, was the first to shovel walks for the elderly, sent kids to college and is actually all the the Gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us we should be."

This is coming from someone who calls someone who he has never met disgusting and vile based on posts on a message board. That's really trustworthy!

"Yes, I have researched him a great deal. What I found is alot of people are extremely jealous and threatened enough lie about him and cut films to justify themselves... get a clue, say a prayer brother"

You mock the purpose of prayer. All I can really say is Chris (and I disagree with most of us what he has said) is more decent of a person than you will ever be since he isn't going around telling people that disagree with him to pray in a sarcastic manner.
Re: Seen the video | 10:54 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
He Buddy,
I haven't seen the video, but if your quote accurately recounts it he said, "and the bush or perhaps some others".

Sounds to me like he's leaving that open to other prohpets like Isaiah, Samuel, Joseph Smith etc etc.

Not sure what you're so upset about. Is he apostate for not using that moment as a missionary moment to give witness of Joseph Smith? Just because he doesn't share his personal testimony with some liberal reporter (who asks that type of question anyway?) trying to cast Mitt as someone at the loony bin doesn't mean Mitt doesn't believe it happened. Aren't we taught to not cast our pearls to the swine?

Just a thought.
Did God talk to Brother Joseph? | 10:55 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Indiana,

"Excuse me? You have no idea what I read or don't read. You have now idea what kind of person I am, my current church calling or the extent to which I read or understand or teach the scriptures."

Nor do you know what kind of person he is, nor his current Church calling or extent to which he reads, understands or teaches the scriptures yet you are quick to condemn him. So I suggest you take the beam out of your own eye before trying to deal with the peck in his eye.

"You want to quote prophets and scriptures, yet I do not think you understand them (or much else) properly."

You just accused him of not knowing anything about you or about your knowledge yet think you know about his knowledge. You are truly acting like a hypocrite regardless of your calling which has no absolutely no bearing since even Apostles have been excommunicated.

"I do not trust you to know what you are talking about."

I don't trust either of you unless you tell us you are Thomas S. Monson. Until then I think I will believe that God talked to Joseph Smith. Will you?
Threat | 11:09 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
The DNC is doing a typical trash the guy who will do the most damage to their guys chances. Having Barney Frank as a point man on this is a laugher. Frank has become a career politician who has done little to in Washington. This is why most people hate politics because the ones who are screaming the loudest are the ones who have done the least with their opportunities. At least Romney has made an impact on things in his life.
Romney as VP? | 11:21 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
Hey all you liberals and haters of all things conservative.

You gotta' admit that Romney's business skills and keen understanding of the economy wouldn't be a bad thing for a VP to have.

Come on, come on, I know you can say it if you want to......just say "Romney understands economics".

There, that didn't hurt, now did it!

Ha!

Romney 2012
Judy | 11:59 p.m. Aug. 14, 2008
This story is completely biased. The website gives the negatives on 8 potential GOP VP candidates but the Deseret News and SL Trib both only focus on the website's treatment of Romney, thereby implying that the rest of the world is taking him seriously. It isn't. He is considered a flip-flopping ball of fluff in 49 states and only considered an asset to the GOP ticket in the one state his co-religionists live in. Go look up the site and see for yourselves. And it isn't necessarily anti-Mormon bias that he has such a low rating---do you know where he stands on ANYTHING? If you do, you should tell him, because he doesn't have any idea.
MoJules | 12:07 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
I guess that the Democrats are so desperate that they have to go after the #2 choice, or prospect. The Republicans don't need to do that, they only have to think about Obama and what a disaster he would be. Obama was able to organize his community, Romney was able to organize an Olympics that was in trouble and also a state.
Pete Gonzo | 12:13 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
The king of the flip flop. He even flips on his flops. He is a verbal gymnast of Olympic proportions.
Romney have ye got a dime | 1:25 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Those could have just as easily been Republicans saying the same things about him. It's fairly obvious that Mitt's presidential aspirations might as well be over. Mitt speaks with forked tongue.
Bob G | 4:31 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
I'm not going to be prejudiced and denounce all of these criminal politicians trying to get in contol of America. Vote Ron Paul, the only man looking out for america and the american people. America needs an upset in the political games being passed around as if they owned us. We american citizens need representaion, not suppression and scorn. America needs leadership for America and the american people and someone that is not a part of the established power brokers that have put america in its downward spiral of a disfunctional nation. The voters and citizens of america must stand together and denounce all the corporate control or our lives by an upset victory for anyone that does not belong to the Repulican or Democratic parties. America needs change in leadership and policy of america and for america. McCain, Obama, and even the saintly Mitt Romney, the criminal of criminals, are bad for america and the american people. We need leadrship, not lies and deceit, in government that has been oppressive and discriminatory against the american citizens.
kiss of death | 6:41 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
America will not have a Mormon in a position of power ,, it is just that simple step out of Utah and mormons are viewed as a polygamous cult and Romney is one of them end of story
M&M | 7:10 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
I think it is safe to say that the Dems are SCARED! This always in politics, someone feels scared and they do ALL that they can to make themselves feel comfortable. They must REALLY feel threatened by a McCain and Romney Ticket. WATCH OUT!
grama Jane | 7:16 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
I have mixed feelings about Mitt running as VP, when I TOTALLY wish we had him running for PRES. and I feel bad to think of his light being kept under a bushel by McCain, though when I think of "Obama" being pres. I shudder in fear for our country!!!

I think Mitt has the experience, integrity and foresight along with the wisdom and get it done attitude to save our nation, while also helping the whole world. I HOPE and PRAY that if he is willing to sacrifice himself to try to save our economy etc, that McCain , the voters and the politicians will let him do the work that needs to be done and not be against him because of his religion or their prejudice. He came to BETTER stands when he got better insight on abortion and tried to get gays to be content with legal unions instead of corrupting marriage, but is evil ever willing to be satisfied?

May God bless us all to see the truth among the lies and distortions, and do the best we can in our own circles of influence. GO MITT!!
BobP | 8:14 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
I am a Mormon (active) and a conservative (very) and Romney does change his philosophical position more often than I change my socks. He wants power and that is enough to knock him out of my choices.
! | 8:17 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
The reason these democrats attacked Romney is because they DO want him to run with McCain. With that ticket there is no way they will win the presidency. The reverse psychology works well with you people.
Himself | 8:18 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Boy howdy a nerve has been touched here, look at all
the comments. It appears the good people of Utah do
not like Democrats, and many other things. But they
do love members of their own tribe.
Good luck with Gov. Romney you'll need it.
About Mitt's words | 8:24 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
OH please! I heard the actual words Mitt said abut Moses. It seems some people just stopped listening after Moses and didn't hear the complete statement which goes: I don't recall God speaking to me. I don't know that he has spoken to anyone since Moses and the bush or perhaps some others."
Did you read the "some others?" Sheesh, and I'm not even LDS which could obviously refer to J.S. As far as personal revelation, I would hardly consider that GOD talking, when the context refers...face to face. Again, sheesh. And yes, I'm voting for Mitt if given the v.p. nod.

Next up will be a mention of Mitt's polygamous ancestors and no mention that Obama is the product of polygamy.

I live in Atlanta, Georgia (the bible belt.) Everyone that I know who voted republican voted for Romney. Oh, and I am not mormon either.

Utah you are hillarious!!! 127 mostly pro Mitt posts by 8:30, but you didn't support him because of his religon..RIGHT. He just looks like you.

Um, Harry Reid?

Mitt will not be the VP canidate...but he will run again.
I Heart Mitt | 8:49 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Why does everyone here have such a crush on Mitt Romney?

Does anyone really know his record?

It is quite sad if he really represents the best of mormon culture.
CLOCK | 9:10 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Even a clock is right twice a day... the Dems are right on this one. Regardless of their motive for the attack, Romney lost the primary for exactly the items they list.
SG | 9:12 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
You guys need to get a better hobby. Between playing "Who's the Better Mormon" with Chris & company or bashing based on religion, I can still see that every line of comment in the Des News always degenerates into a fight over the Church, and someone's interpretation of it.

For those of us members living outside Utah, this is getting embarassing. Please, people, try to stay focussed on something other than bashing the Church, other members, or non-members. How about actually discussing an issue on its merits for once?

What we need is a None of the Above option on the ballot. Should that one win, the parties would be required to give us better candidates until there was actually someone worth voting for. There's a campaign I'd be willing to back 100%.
To Alex | 9:15 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Goo point on Harry Reid, but I think that what Kiss of Death meant was that America will not have a REAL CONSERVATIVE MORMON in a position of power.
Re: Baptist | 9:24 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
I have never understood a religion that encourages its members to be prejudice. Why is it o.k. for so-called "Christians" to refuse to vote for Romney just because he's a Mormon (follower of Christ)? If they were smart, they'd turn off their blinders and realize that there is more in common there than they're willing to admit. I can't believe the hipocrisy in our society, a world consumed with fighting prejudice, except if they're a Mormon. Who gave the Evangelicals such a pull in the Republican party anyway? This just boggles my mind. I've lived in the Bible belt and the Midwest and found that it would do them some good to consider why their pastors fight so vehemently against the Mormons--they might actually like them! Oh, the horror!

Forget being VP, I'm writting Mitt in as Prez
Mo-Town | 10:08 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Those who have bitten for this flip-flop charade masterfully created by his opponents, I question your smarts. I make a habit of studying all these guys, and it's quite easy for any level headed indivdual to see right through the bunk.

The dude changed his opinion on abortion one time. A flip, no flop. Sure he pandered to the gay rights crowd (Never once supported gay marriage mind you)when he was run'n for Gov of Massachusetts, but how the hell was he supposed to win there any other way. The point is, he did a fantastic job shoring up that Lib infested state

As for 2008, give me 4 years of Obama. That guy is more dangerous than Multiple Personality Disorder wielding a knife, but we may need 4 years of Carter to wake this naive country up to elect another Reagan. Of course, the Left and the foolish Right won't admit it, but our economy would be turned into a gold mine under Mitt's hand

As for this Chris Corwin, the Joseph Smith comment sent me right to my carpet in a spell of uncontrollable laughter. The worlds full of all kinds
Brent | 10:15 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
So, what exactly is the news value of this article except to elicit sympathy from the largely pro-Mitt readers of this paper?

Of course the Dems are going to criticize Romney (they've also been criticizing other potential VPs). It's not as if Romney and other Repubs don't do the exact same thing.

In this case, Romney largely deserves the critcism he's getting. For the record, he's a pathological flip-flopper who seems to lack some core political convictions, and his record in his home state was less than impressive. Sounds like Obama, come to think of it.

Support Romney for VP if you want. But bear in mind that he's, well, a POLITICIAN. He's not the greatest thing since sliced bread. He's not above criticism. Sainthood hasn't been bestowed yet. And don't get overly sensitive like a little child if your candidate gets mud thrown at him. It comes with the territory.
The problem is | 10:15 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
The Dem's can't find a person as qualified as Romney to run on their ticket. They should just suck it up!

Obama Republican | 10:29 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
If all the republicans on this board can not see by now how the Religious Right will treat all Mormon candidates you are blind.

Mitt fell victim to the Radical Christian Right, if the Christian Right ever took real power I am not sure how long we Mormons would survive.

It was not Jews or Muslims that were burning down homestead in Missouri, Ohio or Illinois. Sadly so called Christian feel they can force their beliefs on others, and as history has taught us they quickly draw the sword when met with resistance.

In our lovely Deseret we call ourselves Republicans but the Party uses us for our block of votes. The GOP just can not fathom the thought of a MORMON President!
arc | 10:52 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Perhaps they need to get Jason Chaffetz's democrat competition to speak against Mitt Romney.

This is the 1st time I think I have read a democrat say he has the same politics as Jesus. Would Jesus vote for the democrats. perhaps he is just trying to sell his new book.

Vote for Jason Chaffetz, and McCain. At least they aren't telling you to vote for them because, WWJD.
reply to anon. | 11:11 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Romney did not say God has not spoken to man. He said he does not know that God has spoken WITH a man, in other words a conversation. The only record of him even speaking is at Jesus' baptism and the first vision. But in neither case did he converse with a man. Nice attemp at confusion. Brigham Young said a whole bunch of things you can take out of context. Why don't you try some of his quotes next time.

Mutt | 11:15 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008
Mitt Romney is a good man, but Utah GOP voters act like he is the savior. He could support abortion and they would vote blindly for him because he is LDS and Republican, and because he is rich.

"I have never seen anyone so completely without any commitment to any particular principle and so willing to say whatever he thinks will help him win the next election."

Is Barney talking about B. Hussein Obama?
