A very good review of the book. Very fair as well. The only part I would have to disagree with is that Edward is not nauseating. As a female writer how did you not fall in love with him like the rest of us?

I liked your last few lines. THE HOST IS A REMARKABLE BOOK AND HAD ME RIVETED! I fear it is overshadowed by all the vampire hoopla. I, for one, am looking foward to a sequel to "The Host." It shows just how skilled a writer Meyers can be...it is hard to go back to her teen books now, altho they are good for their specific readers. I am hoping that her book company puts as much publicity behind the Host series!

Loved The Host! I'm looking forward to seeing what Stephenie Meyer will write next. It is also exciting to be reading about Edward, Bella and Jake again (couple hundred pages in). I am anxious to finish reading Breaking Dawn but will be sorry to see this great series end. It's like saying goodbye to old and good friends.

Your review is fair, if not a little too kind. As a die-hard fan I didn't feel that ALL the loose ends were tied up. The book was entertaining and emotional but felt odd when viewed next to the first 3. As a series ender this book satisfies with it's happy ending but disappoints in the need for a multitude of new characters that lack back story in the first 3 books to tie it all together. With a little rephrasing this book could have been an excellent stand alone. New Moon and Eclipse now feel like nothing more then angst ridden unnecessary filler. The characters feel like strangers, the resolutions too simple, transitions too generic and there is too proved to be unnecessary in the end. As a whole the series lacks level of continuity and consistency that I was expecting.
Kudos to Stephenie though. She does an amazing job making the readers FEEL for her characters.

So far a disappointed fan... | 2:11 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Yes, I stood in line at Barnes and Noble at midnight to get the book. I am 2/3 through, and so far I am a bit disappointed. The plot is not flowing very well for me and I have no problem setting it aside (unlike Twilight). The character's drama and personalities are all getting a little old, and the excitement is wearing off. Maybe I'll feel differently when it's over, but so far...not terribly impressed. I agree with an above commentor: it's not consistent enough in many areas.
I also feel bad for the young crowd (we're talking 10-12 year olds) who were dying to read this book. It's too mature in nature for that age: just an FYI for you mom's out there who haven't read this last one. It's quite sexual, which is fine for an older group (17 and up?), but is not okay for younger minds who might find it disturbing (my 12-year-old neighbor found it quite disturbing).

This review is far too generous. I'm not sure if they read the same book that I did.
Liz | 2:46 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
The book was flat out a stupid disappointment. I don't know what Stephenie Meyer was thinking when she wrote it. I don't know if I will ever read it again - I'll just pretend Eclipse is the last one.

I have felt let down from day one, and do not plan to read the last one. I am disappointed that for a young adult book, it has become so sexual. I also cannot see the attraction of a werewolf or a vampire. (I know a lot of people who think they are both very attractive.) As nice as Edward is, he is stone cold. He kills animals and drinks their blood. A werewolf living in a trailer who is always sulking if he doesn't get his way doesn't do much for me either. Bella is so shallow and selfish I cannot stand her, and I don't think the author really understands true, abiding love. Just jump off the cliff to get his attention(2nd book) love. I would not recommend this series to anyone, except an adult for an easy read.

I just finished the books with my daughters and we loved it! She put in romance, comedy, and danger/drama. It was perfect. Yeah:)
Have to agree with Sara | 4:35 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I DON'T get it--this fascination with vampires, werewolves, the occult, witches, etc.
EM | 4:42 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
i havent read the 4th book but im getting it today. i swear if edward an bella dont get married an she doesnt become a vampire the whole 3 books before that would be a waste of my time!!
Stephanie | 4:46 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Sara's comment about jumping off a cliff to get his attention/love is not an accurate description of the story. The act turns out to get his attention but was not planned to do so. As to anyone's feelings in regards to vampires or werewolfs, that is purely personal opinion, just as some people didn't like wizarding and witchcraft when Harry Potter came out. It is fiction and I give kudos to the author for showing that given a dire circumstance such as becoming a vampire, you could still choose to make a higher choice, rather then ruthlessly killing as is often portrayed in fiction. As to what an appropriate age is for reading this series, Stephenie Meyer hereself said in an interview that she would recommend it to 15 to 16 year olds. As soon as I learned that I would have made sure to read the material prior to allowing any child under that age the opportunity.

I really loved Breaking Dawn. It tied up everything that it needed to. Edward did overreact to many things but he did that all the time. I loved the wedding part though because thats how you're susposed to feel when you walk down the aisle to your soulmate. There was a lot of sex stuff; Hello! they're newlyweds, DUH!!!! I hope everyone realizes that. I wasn't expecting alot of the content to take place but I'm glad that there is a way for Edward and Bella to have it all: love, family, and immortality too.

Breaking Dawn felt incomplete. I'm not saying that it wasn't long enough. My Bassett hound like eyes at the completion of the book would speak otherwise. Its only that Meyer seemed to have lost touch with her own characterizations.
Had this been due to growth on the part of the characters, I'd have been fine with it. But instead of growing, the majority only changed. Jacob is the only one who appeared to show any development.
She made so many fans love Edward and Bella. Thankfully, Edward remains the same - (although I had never expected him to do anything as graphic as chewing his vamp-spawn out of his unmedicated wife's belly. Who wrote this?) but Bella becomes a girl who is unrecognizable, and I am not referring to her physical changes.
I enjoyed the escape of the story, but I was left utterly confused by it. I look forward to reading Midnight Sun, because I actually feel like I need my brain scrubbed of my Breaking Dawn memories.

twilight series - a three hit wonder. =.=''
Breaking Dawn was a heartbreaking disappointment. Almost like Stephenie was trying too hard on this one - which in turn made it worse.
Ah, I love the Twilight series....until the last book.

I agree with some... the book was a dissapointment. However, the sex craze thing was a must... they are newlyweds. I loved reading the book, hoping that there would be more to the story, but it didnt meet my expectations. The other books were better than this one. But i still enjoyed the book and will probably reread it as many times as I read the the first three books.

SO FAR I'VE READ THE FIRST THREE BOOKS AND IM COMPLETLY FASCINATED WITH THEM I COULD NOT PUT THEM DOWN FOR ONE MINUTE. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT ALL THE BAD COMMENTS ARE ABOUT BUT THEY MUST HAVE NOT READ THE RIGHT BOOKS THEN. ITS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER READ, AND I CANT WAIT TILL I START BREAKING DAWN.
Kristin | 8:58 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I have to disagree about the host. I am 27 years old so I could hardly be classified as a young adult. I read the Host and really didnt think it was that interesting. I never really fell for the characters. My husband started reading the host after I finished and he didnt even finish it. He gave up. We both think the Twlight Series is much better!
Anonymous | 9:23 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I agree with sara, bella is too foolish. What does a 100-something vampire see in her?
Sarah | 10:12 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I liked the book, personally, but there were some disappointments included, and the author definitely skimmed over some things that were necessary just to move along the plot. And she backtracked on things she'd said and done prior to this book's release, and all in all, it just didn't tie in as well to the rest of the series. The writing improves with each book, but there are some major flaws with the story as well. Overall, it's not bad, but it's not incredible, either.
I too disagree with the reviewer | 11:43 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I did not feel that this book was great. It wasn't terrible. However...it just had a "feel" to it that I didn't like, and to me, the relationship resolutions were unsatisfactory. And...not to give too much away, Edward offering Bella to Jacob? Never. (And kind of bizarre) The birth scene was gruesome. I liked the other 3 and felt that if this book had stayed true to the story that had begun, this book would've been much better. Plus, it could have been shorter. Really, a better editor was needed, as well as the story recapping could have been eliminated altogether. Plus the storyline with the Volturi, I felt that the build up in the other books offered no real payoff in this book.
lovin' it | 12:53 a.m. Aug. 5, 2008
I seriously don't know how any one could not love Breaking Dawn?? I waiting anxiously for this book and reread the first three a half dozen times. I was sad to begin reading it knowing it was the last book... but it was a great ending to a perfect story. Remember everyone, it is a story!! I don't agree with the sexual content, Stephenie never actually went into physical detail, she had a more emotional explanation to it which I though was very classy. I loved it none the less and will keep everything I can so my girls can enjoy it when they get older!

I just finished reading Breaking Dawn and personally, I'm still feeling a little muddled. But you try reading a 700+ page book with no breaks and try to decide how you feel after closing the cover xD
Part of me wants to rip Meyer to shreds for the nonconventional...approach to the "bite scene" but another part is grateful for the lack of cliche. Overall, the book was pretty well written in my opinion, though the younger readers might want to steer past the parts where it's clear that Edward and Bella were *coughs* busy. It might not appeal to their not-yet hormonally driven brains.
I'm pleased with it, and am eagerly awaiting the release of Midnight Sun just to see what goes on in Edward's angsting emo brain xD

NOT a Twilight fan | 9:58 a.m. Aug. 5, 2008
My honest opinion is that these books are nothing more than teenage Harlequin romances. They were written as an outlet for teens who want to get as close as they can to sex without touching it. I think that's sick and wrong. I have nothing against romance and love and even sex (after you're married), but when a book is saturated with sexual tension, you have to wonder what the purpose of the book is...I read the first book and even then I struggled to see what the point was in this vampire/human relationship -- other than an intensely romantic book for teenagers who can't get enough of the stuff from movies and television. Yuck.

**THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS!**
The first 2/3rds of the book needed to be cut in half or more. I was bored to tears. Bella and Edward really love eachother -- I get it. The baby is hurting Bella -- I get it. Jacob loves Bella and is sad she chose Edward -- I GET IT! Move along already!
I liked the last third, except the end wrapped up a little too nicely. I also think Meyer took the easy route with Bella's transformation -- she just happened to not have any bad effects from becoming a vampire because of her self-control? I was excited to see how the transformation changed Bella, but in the end she was just the same, except had shinier skin and could run faster. BORING! Also, the whole vampire baby thing reminded me of when TV shows run out of storylines so they make someone pregnant. I haven't particularly liked any of the last three, although I thoroughly enjoyed Twilight. I like Meyer's writing style a lot, and look forward to some of her future work when she has a little more experience writing a story!

Breaking Dawn (and the series in general) is not intended to be anything more than an entertaining read. Its not deep. Its not a mindbender (like Time Traveler's Wife). But it held my interest during a long plane ride, and was fun. Could it have been better-- sure. But then all of the books could have been better. But there was something about it (Edward's perfection, maybe?) that has held all of our interest through three prior books and almost 800 pages. Yeah- I liked Harry Potter better, but then there were a lot of books I liked better. But I was looking to read a story about a vampire that sparkles in the sun, drives a hot car, has an old fashion sense of love and marriage, and a fight scene. Mission accomplished.

You warn parents that they should read Chapter 5 and 6 but not Chapter 18?
That birth scene was disturbing, creepy and absolutely inappropriate for children to read.

I am 27 years old, I loved all 4 books. Meyer classifies the cooks as being young adult...Ive never known a 12 year old to be a young adult, they aren't even a teen yet.
I totally understood the book, I've seen the younger crowd talk about not having understood alot of things, even know they were explained very well, so that leads me to believe the disappointment in the book is more for the fact the younger crowd couldn't understand it or grasp the concepts even after it was all explained.
The sex wasn't even anymore than it was in the other 3 books...it was nothing but a make out session just like the other books, except there was a morning after. If the morning after hadn't been put in, I don't even think you'd known that they did anymore than just makeout like the other books.
Great book loved it!

I just finished the book and shouted:
'FREE! FREE! I'M FREE FROM THIS BOOK! NOW I CAN GET BACK TO NORMAL LIFE!'
did I like it? yeah, it was okay. I found myself turning back the pages to see that the pregnancy scene lasted more than 100 pages. I was like- okay lets move on! And at times I found myself uttering out loud: 'yeah yeah, you love him blah blah blah, he loves you blah blah blah,'
it just got tedious, all of the perfect bodies and perfect love.
the threw me off, and like always, Meyers hems and haws about an afterlife. for a known mormon, can't she just have her characters believe in heaven?
that said, I loved The Host, and had a lot of fun with the first three books in this series

I was extremely disappointed with Breaking Dawn. I didn't have a set plan for the plot; I just wanted Bella to become a vampire and choose Edward. But, wow! Epic Failure, indeed! I'm not sure how you gave this book (more like really bad fanfiction) such a good review. Bella was a mary sue. I hated how she got everything she wanted; Edward, Jacob, Charlie, a child. Where is the sacrifice, the angst? One of the biggest problems was the lack of a relationship between Edward and Bella. Edward IS one of the central characters, but all he did was read people's mind. I didn't feel the love between Bella and Edward! SM, stop with the sex! We want tenderness, not sex! Bella getting pregnant? That's the worst way to go. First, that's not possible by SM's twilight world rules. Second, Bella never seemed like the mother type. She, and all of the characters were ooc. Bella wasn't Bella, Edward wasn't Edward, etc. My favorite character was SETH! That's ridiculous! Stephenie, what were you thinking? The twilight series to me is a trilogy. Enough said. I returned my copy of BD to the store. BD was a disaster.

I am a mother of 4 kids. I love the twilight books. However, Breaking Dawn was disapointing.
I would love to know if Meyer wrote this book the way she wanted to without taking her fans reactions into account. Things that happen in breaking Dawn go against what Meyer has stated before. The whole plot read like a cop-out. Not that I believe author's have any need to give life lessen, but handing out wrongful lessens are just as dangerous. I will allow my daughter to read the first 3 books, but not Breaking Dawn. The first 3 books are good, Breaking Dawn is lacking.

Breaking dawn was definitely disappointing. It was a good read but also I was able to set it down in the middle of a sentence because it dragged on so long... Twilight was probably the best book out of the 4. I am sad that breaking dawn is the last book because the ending just wasnt satisfying.

This is a question to Lydias comment.
I read BD , but i dont remeber reading about Edward ripping Bellas stomach with his teeth to get out their vamp baby .
I know they said in the book that nothing could break the skin except for sharp teeth.
But did Edward actuually use his teeth:/
cuz it said rosalie was using a scapel and then the blood came out and Edward had to finish it ??

I really liked BD. I liked all three books but it really bothered me that Bella who was only 18 wanted to give up her human life to become a vampire. I wanted to argue with Bella about being too young to know what she was gving up. For me SM solved that problem by making Bella a mother. What mother wouldn't give up her life for a child? It is a very far fetched idea but that's the beauty of fiction. Anything is possible.

Breaking Dawn was a HUGE disappointment.
Stephenie Meyer took an amazing story and turned into a crazy sexual book. She completely changed Bellas character. Shes frickin 18 for crying out loud.

People need to remember that this is Stephanies mind, Stephanies imagination, Stephanies book. I get so tired of people always complaining or ripping apart the books because it didnt turn out or put something in it the way they wanted it. So instead of complaining, why dont you get writing seeings how you obviously think you can do better. I think she did great and she is and amazing writer. And the whole sex thing come on guys they are newlyweds (DUH) grow up. Your the parent so if you dont want them reading it dont let them. You did an amazing job Stephanie thanks for the entertainment!
LOL | 12:58 p.m. Aug. 7, 2008
You know it is funny people keep complaing about the sex (which by the way I think she handeld very tastefully) so my question is why are you reading it any way the sex is bad but the violence is okay. come on people the books are about vampires so your kids probably shouldnt be reading it any way. With all the myths and legends you knew that their was going to be risky things put in the books. I think she did a wonderful job, and I love how she let us see the good in people (vampires) that would have normally sucked you dry and then moved on. She is an amazing writer and I hope she continues writing for her self, and makes her self proud of her own work, instead of people that live in this little bubble where they dont realize that their children learn more about sex from (school, friends, tv ect.) then this book. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK STEPHANIE!

For readers to not expect some sexual "fruition" to follow a wedding is a bit silly. It is *married* sex! Can we not find and focus on the victory in that?! The author has made it very clear that she primarily wrote these books for herself and her peers (30-something, married Moms). It is the publisher that has pushed the young adult/teen market. I found this review to about match my reading experiences of Breaking Dawn; weaker and choppy at first, but more engaging as it went. And quite frankly, I enjoyed the fact that Bella becomes the warrior-wife-Mom-immmortal. If you don't like it, plunk down at a keyboard and write your own finale!

Four reasons I dislike these books -
1. Author makes clear it is ok to lie to your parents whenever you need to when you are in love.
2. It's ok to have your boyfriend sleep in your bed every night. (just make sure the dumb dad is asleep)
Since said boyfriend loves you, he has so much self control that there's no way you'll have sex.
3. But, once you are married, it's ok to have your husband abuse you physically when you have sex. Since you love him, you know he would never mean to hurt you.
4. It's just fine for you to get pregnant when you are still a teen, because your husband, your family and friends will be with you every day to help take care of your baby. (but really, you won't need them because you know everything already!)
I would like to hear the discussions Ms. Meyers has with her boys when they become hormonal teens. "oh, sure, go have a sleepover with your girlfriend - I know you are so strong nothing will happen. But if it does, let me know right away so I can start planning a wedding".

Breaking Dawn was okay.
i didn't actually HATE it. but i didn't LIKE it either.
there are many things i didn't like.
how Bella got everything she wanted.
the pregnancy.
jacob's imprinting on bella's baby.
i'm not really a fan of 'team Jacob' so i didn't like the fact that a part of the book was all about werewolves.
there was less EDWARD and BELLA. [i was really disappointed]
well, there are many more.
but i loved the ending that the three of them were together.[edward, bella and reneesme.
well, there were more things i didn't like, but it was really okay.
although i enjoyed the other three books, especially TWILIGHT, unlike this book.

2nd to last chapter | 1:47 p.m. Aug. 11, 2008
The 2nd to last chapter of BD was one of the best chapters in all four books. IT WAS OVER! I could not Come up with one way out of the predicament, if it wasn't for Carlisle there would have been "blood" everywhere. The climax of this series was breathtaking. As for the child, did you really think a mormon mom author was going to deny her a child?

The first three books of the Twilight series captivated me. I felt like I had entered the world of Forks, and I came to know and love all of the people there. This fourth book left me feeling a little sullen. What happened to the characters I fell in love with? It seems like they got lost somewhere in between the upcoming deadline and the unbelievably high expectations of all the Twilight fans, including myself. I want to apologize to SM for expecting more from her than I could ever hope to accomplish myself. And, I want to thank her for bringing to me the thrills of getting lost in books. It's been fun.....

Okay...does anyone get that Bella was a very clumsy and probably "normal" looking teen while Edward is a "god" who loves her for how good she smells?!
I mean, I don't even remember reading what color her eyes were...
The only reason I read this book series was to see what my 16 year old daughter and her friends are reading...
I can only hope she becomes as bored as I did.
My first 2 children read the classics and books that left you "thinking" and a more interesting person.
These are certainly not the kind of books I would brag about reading in public.
Very, very poor character development, very poor story development past Twilight...I think if you have actually read good books, anyone would see that.
This will be a "B" movie and I can only hope that the mothers reading these are not burning their family's dinners and neglecting the children because of a teenage vampire book.

It seems to be lost on some the posters here that the Twilight series is a FANTASY tale. Of course it is not entirely realistic! I like the underlying messages:
1. No premarital sex despite temptation- obviously there’s hormonal temptation… it gives the relationship drive and interest. As for the "violence" that accompanied the newlywed bedroom scenes...Give me a break! it's ridiculous to think that it is anything other than what it is- A human wife in a sexual relationship with an infinitely stronger vampire husband in a FANTASY tale!
2. Eternal marriage/family. Despite the obstacles the goal for Bella and Edward is eternity together with their daughter.
3. A peaceful/moral lifestyle. The Cullens seek peace above all and sacrifice their natural instincts to do it(Putting off the natural man...er, vampire). They could be compared to another peculiar people who were persecuted for their lifestyle because it was strange and misundertood by their society. Their demeanor results in the alliance with the wolves and shows that they can put aside differences and work together toward a common goal... peace.
These books are engaging, classy and well written. It begins well and ends well. Thank you Stephenie for a great story!!
