Ha ha! Ahhh, man. Nothing like good, clean humor to give me a chuckle. Because it's funny to assume that high school student-athletes aren't aware of basic words like "hygiene" and "character." I guess these football studs are playing up, since only a 9-year-old wouldn't know these words or be able to spell them. Just wait until they're seniors...in about seven years.

And how about those wacky coaches who escape the wife for a week or two to go eat garbage. And speaking of eating garbage, I'm sure those poor citizens of Tanzania would gladly feast on the scraps these high school football heroes leave behind, because it's funny that people in Africa are starving and poor and can't afford to send their kids to football camp or wrap them up in sweat bands. Amazing that junior is aware that Tanzania even exists, and that he spelled it correctly. Maybe he's not as dumb as we think. He just has problems with his spelling.

If this "news story" doesn't win a Pulitzer, I'll personally petition that awards ceremony. Never before have I witnessed such biting satire or humor, especially in a mainstream newspaper. We need more articles like this.
Very Funny | 9:01 a.m. July 24, 2008
That is a perfect description of football camp. As an addition, we always hated warming up with "damentals". We never called them "fundamentals" because they aren't "fun".

There's nothing wrong with his mind. Great column...brings back memories of high school football and stinky shoulder pads I swear walked around the locker room at night when we were gone.

I don't know how much character was built, but our team had more than its share of characters.

And this is funny...how?
Annoying is more like it | 7:10 a.m. July 25, 2008
Football isn't for the weak minded. That's what is being portrayed here.

To "annoying"...Get a life. This article was funny and more true than most would like to think. Smelly kids, junk food eating coaches, and the costs to play football are out of control. This article was great!!!

Not funny! This article was a waste of time
True | 11:56 a.m. July 25, 2008
It was all too true even the part about dad giving more money to the boosters.

Talk about censorship. If something is said that is truthful and less than glorifying to Robinson then it is deleted. Robinson is an elitist and cators to elitists. And that is the bottom line. The article glorifies self indulged, spoiled young men and their insecure coaches that have nothing more productive to do with their energy than act like stupid idiots.

I agree, this article is a waste of time and uses condescending, useless humor. Robinson should be made into a tackling dummy or a jock strap supporter.

sounds like robinson's kid didn't have the best time at football camp.

I personally like the cornchip smell when you don't shower for a week. (wink wink)
Lets talk about character | 11:45 p.m. July 26, 2008
Coaches who take time off, many from their day jobs because they don't teach, sit in that same hot sun and in many cases spend hours and hours behind the scenes trying to improve the experience of these young men-these are men with character.

No one is claiming that coaches are perfect-they try their best to do a very difficult job. Some better than others, but, they are out there trying their best.

Get in line Robinson! Let's make the job of the coaches a little harder by making them look foolish. Get in line behind the Carbon high principal, the minority of parents who make life miserable for coaches, players and parents who think their children are going to play for a division I college, and now I guess the deseret news.

Those who cut down people with character-classless! The cowardly thing is that there is no recourse for you, if a coach does something creative in the public eye to try to enhance the program or express his opinion, he gets fired because he angered someone. See the Carbon High Coach article.
50 Cents worth?! | 11:36 a.m. July 27, 2008
Wow! I can't believe I just spent 50 cents and 2 minutes of my precious time reading this rag!

There ARE much better ways to write a humorous article about football camp than to put people down, and characterize them as illiterate, over-weight and stupid.

What's next, four-eyed, over-weight, gray-haired referees? Now, that would be original and funny!
serious | 9:51 a.m. July 28, 2008
Are you people serious? What a bunch of baby's- you let this article get to you??? get a life and stop crying-it doesn't mean anything! lighten up
wow | 10:37 a.m. July 28, 2008
you know that the deseret news has nothing to report on when they let stupid articles like this be published.
HMMMM | 9:09 a.m. July 30, 2008
I guess this is what happens when you ask a track coach from Alta High to write a article on summer football camps. While there was a few funny moments in this story because it did ring to some truth lets not down play the work that both these athletes and coaches are doing to prepare for the upcoming season. Also Doug thanks for helping to dismiss the dumb jock sterotype it is really needed in a day and age of many 4.0 scholar athletes.
Great Writing! | 8:40 p.m. July 30, 2008
I loved this! Good job!
