A columnist from the Washington Post is speculating that the questionable news story about McCain naming a vice-presidential nominee is no more than an attempt to shift briefly away from Obama in the Middle East and to McCain without any real intention of naming a vice-presidential campaign. We will see.
Dude | 2:00 a.m. July 23, 2008
Why would McCain pick Romney? He is still LDS. Would people in the "Bible Belt" vote for Romney as VP? I don't think so. If you think they would why? What has changed since Romney ran for President. He would be too close to being President.

Mitt will help deliver the state of Utah! Ha Ha Ha Ha...McCain ain't got a chance! He's a dunderhead!

No Mitt!

If the LDS leaders can brazenly instruct Californians how to vote without the church losing its tax-exempt status, they would not hesitate to pressure a Mormon government leader to structure society according to their wishes.

Mitt as VP? McCain may well die in office (he's old!) and Mitt woulc then be president. The LDS leadership would then be in charge of the country.

No Mitt!
oldman | 5:32 a.m. July 23, 2008
Imagine what this clown and McSame could do to this country in just 4 years. The worst president ever, Bush, would sound good when these elitists got through.
Go Mitt | 5:49 a.m. July 23, 2008
I think Mitt would bring much business and economics weight to McCain's run, along with some badly needed gravitas. However, I don't think Romney adds a large voter base. But who exactly fits that these days in the Republican camp?

It would also be a great platform for Mitt to run again in '12 against Obama (already a done deal in the media).
SLC gal | 6:52 a.m. July 23, 2008
Mitt Romney as VP is the ONLY way that I'm voting for McCain!
MACENOUGH | 7:02 a.m. July 23, 2008
Mitt would be good for McCain but McCain would not be good for Mitt!! As far as the previous posts by Dude, AWB and Oldman, They need help! They eat too many sour grapes!
liberal larry | 7:03 a.m. July 23, 2008
I don't think that McCain's personal dislike for Romney will be a factor in picking him for V.P., after all he was held prisoner and tortured in Vietnam for 5 years, so he can probably stand to hang with Mitt for a few months. The real reason that Mitt won't be chosen, is that neither of the two candidates have Christian street creds. McCain seems to be luke warm on the religion thing, and the evangelicals will rip Romney's mormonism to pieces. As much as I would like to see McCain create this doomed ticket, he won't pick Romney.
We can hope! | 7:05 a.m. July 23, 2008
That would be an exciting ticket. Someone we can trust and who would follow through with what he has promised.
Mitt's other liabilities | 7:09 a.m. July 23, 2008
Aside from offending Bible belters, Mitt's opposition to fuel efficiency standards in the automobile industry and his backroom deals with Ted Kennedy to block wind power in Massachusetts shows that he is completely out of touch with dealing with America's energy crisis. He said that fuel efficiency standards would hurt jobs in Detroit -- sorry, but the very gas guzzling cars that Detroit decided on its own to build is what is killing the American auto industry -- not mandates for fuel efficiency. And wind mills would look bad off the Massachusetts coast despite wind energy being clean and price stable for 20 years! Aesthetics over economics for Mitt and Ted!!! Mitt may be able to bring in Utah for McCain, but the black vote will bring the south to Obama if Bible-belters don't like Mitt, and the high-tech sectors excited about Obama's promise of $150 billion in investments in domestic, price-stable renewable energy will bring California and other high-tech states on board as well. Mitt will be a bigger liability than asset.
robert | 7:14 a.m. July 23, 2008
The talk about Mitt is to take away the cameras and news from Obama. Obama is loved by the world for lots of good reasons. Wait until you see the Germans go for him!!

The GOP needs to take everyone's eyes off of the fact that the world wants Obama because they have had it with Bush and the GOP. Frankly, it would be nice to have a president that the world likes, will listen to, etc. What a relief that would be, and how good that would be for us!!
mike | 7:16 a.m. July 23, 2008
honestly does it really matter? McCain is not a great choice, and Obama is even worse. We have no one to vote for who will help the country, and lower our taxes, gas prices, unemployment, and heighten our national security (and by the way, my fellow conservatives, going to war everywhere is NOT the way to heighten national security), but all you libs out there... neither is pandering to the terrorists.

Someone here said that the Mormons will run Romney, they never have yet. He made all kinds of bad decisions as governor. And which would be better a Christian religion running a V. Pres, or left wing lunatics running a US pres with zero experience?
ignorant | 7:21 a.m. July 23, 2008
I still find it hilarious that all these people won't vote for Romney strictly because he's a Mormon. There are at least five other solid reasons not to vote for the guy, but come on, leave the religious bigotry out of it and base your disdain on something reasonable, like policy.
Indiana | 7:23 a.m. July 23, 2008
I think Mitt does bring voters. He had an extremely respectable showing in the Primaries and he has handily won nearly every internet poll run in the last two weeks and there have been around 12 of them or so. I can only think of one that he lost actually.

Don't worry, not everyone is a biggot and everyone is not foolisg.
To AWB | 7:28 a.m. July 23, 2008
LOL AWB...you're funny. Your paranoia is laughable. "The LDS leadership would then be in charge of the country."

Oh no, the sky is falling...

Heaven forbid a Mormon might be in the White House some day...when we could have a Trinity United Church follower there instead. I mean with a spiritual leader like Jeremiah Wright for 20+ years it would be a shame to have an LDS president.

Get over your paranoia, Mitt will soon have 1 foot in the door, with the other to follow some day.
Carolina Saint | 7:31 a.m. July 23, 2008
Mitt would be better off sitting this one out, I won't vote for McCain even if Mitt runs with him. The anti-LDS comments from McCain's mother with McCain giggling did it for me. McCains disdain for Mitt was real and everyone saw it. McCain hated Mitt and still has a hard time saying anything nice about the family.

Romney should sit this election out.
mjbauer | 7:32 a.m. July 23, 2008
Call me a "typical white person". Obama needs to get a brain, along with anyone else who votes for him. "Hope" doesn't pay the rent. If Mitt is McCain's running mate he can help our economy with his expertise and experience in finances, not to mention resolving the border issue.
mjbauer | 7:38 a.m. July 23, 2008
"Hope" doesn't pay the rent. At lest Mitt is experienced enough in economics. And what does religion have to do with it? Are you saying we can vote for Obama because he's black but not for Mitt because he is LDS? Sound a little hypocritical.
Obama will win | 7:42 a.m. July 23, 2008
Selecting Romney will only make the inevitable Obama presidency a sure thing. The entire south, generally a GOP stronghold, will go solidly for Obama. The Christian Right will stay home instead of voting for a ticket with a mormon on it. A Romney selection will put a lock on the white house for Obama.
McCracken | 7:50 a.m. July 23, 2008
AWB your an idiot for sure. Mitt's business mind would be great for us. What does AWB stand for, All World Bonehead??? Yeah I suppose you think obamas experience is the way to go - so stupid

KM | 7:51 a.m. July 23, 2008
I'm amused at the anti-mormon messages on this topic, Romney.
All this ballony about Romney and his Mormon faith.
He would be the most qualified to lead our country out of the financial mess its in. But you bigots keep bashing his mormonism and well get what we deserve.
p.s. as a member of the LDS church, I would rather not have a person of Romneys ability and nobility sullied by our political nightmare.
Keep it Real | 7:56 a.m. July 23, 2008
Many factors to consider here, First, Many who feel uneasy about a Mormon as president would not hold the same feeling as a Mormon for VP. 2nd, Mitt would no doubt do the best job as VP, 3rd, My gut felling is McCain will NOT Select Mitt as his nominee for many reason I wont go into here.

Another gut feeling is, Obama will be are next President like it or not. And if you think Bush was bad, Well you haven't seen a major storm yet.
Mitt is the least of our worries | 8:03 a.m. July 23, 2008
If you have followed any of the press on Obama, Mitt is the least of our worries. We NEED Mitt Romney on the ticket, no matter the religious barbs and darts thrown his way. America needs to wake up and DO something to oppose the inexperienced OBAMA, who is an Obamanation--who is scary to think of him in the White house. His whole rise to notoriety was haphazard at best and has an inflated opinion of himself. No racism in thinking that way, just fact. Please do not fall into his "wild card" trap like he did with his race card and gender with Ms.Clinton. There is really not much substance to the man...So wake up America it is time to stand up and be counted and that is to get McCain elected whether Mitt is in or not! It is the future of our country and our only HOPE!!Educate yourselves in the Constitution. Barack Obama is an attorney (God help us)and so was Bill Clinton who was an expert in Constitutional Law, that is how he got away with not being impeached. Think about it. And pray with full energy & heart.
Anonymous | 8:18 a.m. July 23, 2008
Hypocrisy is the name of the game with the liberals. "Since you're not voting for Obama, you must be racist against black people." "Romney? We can't have him in there, he's a Mormon." Very few people seem to notice this religious bigotry that exists in our nation. Make fun of a Jewish person's beliefs in high school and the ACLU will be after you faster than you can snap your fingers. However, my brothers have both been ridiculed and mocked for our LDS beliefs at high school, and do their best to stand and bear it with out getting angry.
I doubt the south would switch over and vote Obama because of a Mormon. The last time the south switched party preference, it involved much bigger issues (civil rights) and went from being very blue to overwhelmingly red. I don't the nomination of a Mormon to VP would redo that.
I almost wouldn't if I was Mitt. I'd suggest to McCain to go get Huckabee, the two were so tight and good at beating up on Romney the Mormon in the primaries.
Hee Hee, he's a Mormon | 8:20 a.m. July 23, 2008
To all the Mormon bashers, here's a little secret:

He's not really one of us! He's pro-abortion, pro-gay, and anti-gun. Sure, his political stance changed when he started his presidential campaign, but get him elected and he'll go back to his old politics like a dog to his vomit.
LOL | 8:20 a.m. July 23, 2008
If McCain picks up Romney as a running mate, his base will actually shrink. Anyone from Utah that has been to the south or midwest will know from experience that the LDS faith is not excatly welcomed with open arms in certain circles there. Personally I would welcome him to do so, anyone that wanted him to win would be pretty firmly against this idea. As for "giving him utah", duh like he won't win Utah rofl, half this state just walks in and checks one box.
That would be great | 8:29 a.m. July 23, 2008
I wasn't going to vote for McCain anyway. Having Romney as his VP running mate would guarantee an Obama victory, so I hope this happens (I doubt it will).

MY reasons for not wanting Romney as VP Likely differs than the majority of the country. Most people don't want a Mormon VP any more than they want a Mormon President. I could care less if Romney is a Mormon, I believe having him in office would be a step backwards for Americans.
A realist | 8:32 a.m. July 23, 2008
A better bet in the "veepstakes" would be Minnesota's Republican governor Tim Pawlenty. He's politically saavy (has to be to survive in DFL party controlled Minnesota, hails from the Midwest, and has hair almost as good as Mitt's). Folks in Utah ought to get to know him...
Go President ? | 8:44 a.m. July 23, 2008
I do want to know who McCain is going to pick because I want to know who will really be President when McCain croaks.
Anonymous | 8:47 a.m. July 23, 2008
To Robert- Being "liked" and being "smart" are two different things. I Like my dog but I sure wouldn't want her running this country!
Jeffrey | 9:06 a.m. July 23, 2008
If Romney is chosen as prospective-VP then McCain is sunk.

Personally, I can't stand Two-Face, but that's not why I'm saying this. It's not Romney's positions that will prevent McCain from winning. It is the fact that he is Mormon.

I'm not saying that's right, because I don't believe it is. But the fact is that very few Evangelicals will ever vote for a Mormon. McCain NEEDS those votes!

Based on that, I'll be surprised if the puppet-masters that control McCain choose Romney, but I guess I should be prepared to be surprised.
Reid | 9:08 a.m. July 23, 2008
Who cares? McCain doesn't understand the constitution or the rule of law and neither does Romney. It's like Augustus Caesar and Mark Antony brokering a deal to destroy the Republic.
to AWB | 9:14 a.m. July 23, 2008
The negative comments made about President Bush are so ungrateful. President Bush has made it his mission for you and me to not have to go through another 9/11. I can say with great pride that he has done that. He has also taken every negative bashing for the past 8 years with great honor and courage. I would like to know what President Bush has done to you but protect you from our enemy? Our enemy doesn't care if you are democrat, republican, black, white, rich, poor, Christian, Jew, man, woman or child. All they want to do is cut your head off. I do not ever hear the media give Bush or his lovely wife one moment of thanks or sincere concern. Maybe they don't know how. History will show Bush to be the most courageous president this country has ever had.
To "to AWB" | 9:22 a.m. July 23, 2008
What has Bush done? Doubled our national debt; involved us in unjustified perpetual war; destroyed our economy; trampled the constitution under his feet; increased the size of government more than any president since FDR; increased socialism in general (i.e., medicare, department of education, Fannie and Freddie bail out, etc.); destroyed the U.S. dollar through deficit spending (although the Fed is certainly equally to blame); bankrupted the U.S. Need I go on?

Please (1) study the constitution and its history to see what our president should and can legally do; and (2) determine if Bush has acted in conformance with the constitution. Then, think about things logically - is offensive (as opposed to defensive) war good for the country and its economy? Does spending ourselves into bankruptcy seem like a good road to take?

I wish people would really study things and use common sense instead of show loyalty merely because someone is a Rep or a Dem or because he "prays about going to war" (which is such a joke).
Yoda | 9:44 a.m. July 23, 2008
Winning ticket Yoda thinks McCain/Romney in November will be.
I hope not! | 10:04 a.m. July 23, 2008
The choice of Romney for VP would put the seal of failure on the Republican ticket--and maybe that's what it is supposed to do.
The powers behind the scenes want Obama and we're going to get him.
The idea that the two most qualified men to run for president are McCain and Obama is ridiculous--so ridiculous that I am beginning to think it was a pre-planned deal!
There are a lot of Romney's political ideas I don't agree with, but I know people who have known him well for years, and I believe them when they tell me he is an honorable man. He needs to stay as far away from this mess as possible!
Crazy people | 10:05 a.m. July 23, 2008
What all of you fail to realize is that what in the worl does any president have to do with the economics in this country!! Do they stand behind you in the line at the store and tell you what to buy and how much to spend..NO!!!! So as much good as Mitt may seem economically they still have to deal with getting laws passed thru congress which has shown over the years to only care about themselves and what is good for them not the majority of the populace. The only way this economic crisis is going to be turned around is when we as a people wake up and change our ways. And to those who are on here bagging about the religious implications, Hell the same could be said for any president who follows religion. SO get off it. What you don't think that the catholic church has had any say in politics, then you are kidding yourself.

What's wrong with you people?. Call your US Senator and Congressman today.

Not gonna happen | 10:34 a.m. July 23, 2008
As much as I like and respect Romney, McCain is very unlikely to pick him as VP. Because the Republican party sold its soul to southern evangelicals decades ago, he needs their votes to have any chance at winning.

During the primary, those voters (as a group) proved their bigotry once again and rejected the most qualified presidential candidate because of his religion. It's part of the reason why as a Republican (who lives in a state that could go to either party this year), I'm leaning towards Obama. The Republican party needs to figure out where it's going and reclaim its roots in small government and personal freedom. The far right religious fanatics have destroyed what the party used to stand for.

Anyway, because of the evangelicals power in the party, I just don't see McCain picking Romney.

I know this is hard to hear, but those evangelicals don't like Mormons, they don't like Utah, they don't like anyone who isn't just like them and they certainly aren't going to vote for Romney, even as the VP.

"What do you want, you little jerks?"

That's what McCain will be saying to us all soon.
OTHER VP ALTERNATIVES? | 10:48 a.m. July 23, 2008
George W. Bush (You can't teach experience)
The Governator (Can a non-US born man become VP?)
Christian Bale (He's as popular as anyone right now)
Jeff Foxworthy (He's smarter than a 5th grader....)
Alex Tribec (He's smarter than ANYONE!)
Bill Gates (I hear he's looking for a new job)
Warren Buffett (Who knows more about the economy than this guy?)
Thomas S. Monson (Guarenteed to get the LDS vote)
Anthony Robbins (He may just INSPIRE everyone to vote for McCain)
Stephen Colbert (Funny and McCain would get free advertising on his TV show)
Mike Rowe (He knows all about how to fulfill a "dirty job"
Mike Huckabee (He doesn't believe that Jesus and the Devil are brothers, just ask him)
Barack Obama (Can't we just be united as one?)

Romney isn't corrupt enough to be V.P. He doesn't belong to the CFR, Trilateral Commission, or the Bilderbergers. Although I'm sure it's just a matter of time so he can further his political career.
Oracle | 11:19 a.m. July 23, 2008
Mitt Romney will be McCain's pick for VP!!!

America's economic woes are only going to get worse, until we have someone in office who knows how to rescue a drowning organization: be it business, Olympics, or government.

Mitt is what America needs, Believe it, work for it, promote it, pray for it!
Life Long Conservative | 11:32 a.m. July 23, 2008
Mitt is the only VP that could make me vote for the McCain ticket. Mitt IS a solid christian, very honest and all this garbage about flip flop is just nonsense. I am happy when politians can learn as they gain experience and have the humility to change when they know they were wrong. Or can change when they see the circumstances now need a different solution.
WHAT? | 11:46 a.m. July 23, 2008
