I have no idea what is really going on at Carbon High School but until the kids make the commitment to work during the off season and the parents make the commitment to support the program it doesn't matter who coaches. Here is a chance for the administration and the community to help the football program by supporting the coach rather than the whinny parents.
Coach K | 9:24 a.m. July 22, 2008
It's about time some of the athletic programs at the public high schools are eliminated. It's impossible for rural 3-A schools to be consistent without the students participation (playing). Good for Carbon... If the students and community don't support football with better numbers, save the taxpayer some money! Say could Carbon play fall baseball with the 1-A's??? At least they would have better numbers of participation!
My kind of coach | 10:08 a.m. July 22, 2008
Any coach who emphasizes participation in multiple activities is a coach we should want, not one we should want to get rid of. Too many coaches think the other way.

Once again a spineless administrator gives in to group of whinney parents. Public Enemy Number One is not the community or the studentbody. It's the parents.
Coach | 10:30 a.m. July 22, 2008
A True Coach concerns himself with getting the best out of the players that he has, and doesn't worry about how many kids aren't there.
To Quote Hoosiers,"I would hope that you would respect us for who we are, not who we are not."
A Coach teaches competition, effort and personal sacrifice. Good sportsmanship and dedication. To never quit. To teach this effectively, he must posses those same values.
If this True Coach isn't ready to give up, and has the type of men on his team that will fight regardless of small numbers or physical size, then he has taught them lessons every bit as valuable as calculus or history.
It isn't about the lack of support from apathetic people who can't be bothered to help; it is all about the kids and Coaches who ARE there, sweating and working to achieve thier goals! If only one kid were there and wanted to learn the lessons of football, I'll bet the Coach would support and guide him. Because that is what True Coaches do. I'd send my boy to play for him.

been there done that | 11:03 a.m. July 22, 2008
If he has 18 players coming back, it can be done. I started one year with 13 players and ended with 23 and a championship.

I must agree with "anonymous." I don't even understand how such an article/letter could create any issues?? I have watched Carbon's program deteriorate and make me disgusted as an alum...others are right, the participation is very poor as is the community support. I will side with the coach on this one, it is a thankless job, but keep trying!
firing | 11:23 a.m. July 22, 2008
Firing someone over a text message shows no guts at all! that is very professional.... Call him into the office and talk about it! Someone should interview the kids that have worked all year long for this and see what they think about it.
coach j | 11:31 a.m. July 22, 2008
I've been coach and a teacher at a public high school for the past 15 years. I've seen a whole bunch of coaches fired for what parents and administrators thought was injustice over what are really meaningless games. Rarely do I ever see a parent or administrator upset because they perceive a child being mistreated in the class room. And I would dare say on a percentage coaches work harder for kids than teachers. As a community and a society we just have our priorities messed up
Concerned Parent | 11:37 a.m. July 22, 2008
This is an outrage. Coach Tiller has been the best coach my son has ever had. He has given my son more than football skills. He has given him life skills. I have never met a more dedicated coach, not only to winning, but a complete dedication to his players. He truly cares about those boys and their lives. He is dedicated to school pride. After every game win or lose he would have his team sing the school song. Coach Tiller is the best coach to come through Carbon High Football. He is the only hope for turning the program around. GIVE HIM TIME!! Leave the personal politics out of it. Let him do his job. Let him coach. The administration at Carbon High should be ashamed of themselves for allowing nonsense to influence their decisions as to what is best for CHS Football and what is best for our children. Coach Tiller needs to keep fighting for our boys. We need to hold a public forum to discuss this disaster that the administration has caused. I do not feel like all of the community has been heard!!!!! Be heard Carbon County!!!
Reliefed Alum | 11:47 a.m. July 22, 2008
I have been around the kids of Carbon High and none of them really believed that Tiller really cared about them and improving the program. 10 kids went to a seven on seven camp! How many kids do you think Emery took to their camp?! Bragging about 18 kids in morning workouts doesnt sound like the Dinos would improve from a 2-7 season. He had been put on "warning" months ago and for the record I got a text that this happened two weeks ago!
A former coach | 11:57 a.m. July 22, 2008
Adminsitrators rarely have any idea about what it takes to run an athletic program. They always think they know best and they really have no clue. They don't have the time to observe properly so they just make capricious decisions.
re coach j | 12:00 p.m. July 22, 2008
I agree. Parents are far more worried about playing time than if their kids can read.
Fire the Administrator | 12:09 p.m. July 22, 2008
The person who should be fired is the Administrator that sent the text message.
Disgusted | 12:36 p.m. July 22, 2008
This firing was about personal agenda and vendetta from a few individuals within the community. Coach Tiller has a great program and he is very dedicated to the players as a coach, and as role model. The administrators at Carbon High are spineless and clueless. Some things never change. This is shameful and disgusting! Carbon High has lost a true supporter. Go Emery!
re: Fire the Administrator | 12:40 p.m. July 22, 2008
You hit the nail on the head. School administrators are typically gutless. They rarely give straight answers and usually just tell you what you want to hear. To fire a coach by a text message is awful, you would think administrators would stand up for teachers and do what is best for students, but you rarely see that in school administrators. They usually do more to keep themselves in control than anything.
Stop finger Pointing | 12:53 p.m. July 22, 2008
Recently with the jailed prep players the vast majority of the comment indicated the parents did not take enough control of there children’s lives. With this article they claim the parents are taking too much. So where’s the line? It ok to ask the parents to butt out their kid’s lives, but then it gets a little hypocritical to turn around and then hold them responsible when things go wrong. In this case I suggest maybe getting the short and vague answer we haven’t got a chance to hear yet clarified a little before pronouncing our judgment on anybody.
Coached with Stansfield | 12:53 p.m. July 22, 2008
Just another program Greg Stansfield has sent to death row.
re: Fire the Administrator | 12:56 p.m. July 22, 2008
I would hardly say that administrators are typically gutless. Only the ones you read about in the news. I teach and coach in Iron county and our administration is very considerate to their staff. They have never acted in a "gutless" way. You do read about some but those instances are what you hear in the news so you assume all administrators act that way. Plus you have never been in their shoes so you shouldn't make blanket statements about groups of people. Yes this man probably made a mistake, but we all do. Yours just don't make it into the newspaper.
re: Reliefed Alum | 1:01 p.m. July 22, 2008
I do not believe you have a grasp on the actual numbers involved in the 7 on 7 camps or the so-called warning Coach Tiller received and especially how much Coach Tiller cares for the kids and the program. There were many more than the 10 kids you claim went from CHS to the camps. Emery did not attend the camps at all. Coach Tiller has been fighting an uphill battle from day one. But the key word there is fighting. Coach Tiller has always fought for this program and for the success of our Dinos.
Nonathletic educator | 1:10 p.m. July 22, 2008
I am not an athlete, never was, never will be. However, sports aside, the bottom line is that Carbon HS administrators showed the "ultimate wimpiness" by firing the coach via text. How shameful! Reliefed Alum (relieved should have a "v" and alum is a spice) who sides with the administration seems to demonstrate his/her belief that winning games was more important gaining a proper English education. Pity the school system if you're ever elected to the school board. This is just another case of education and kids lose while whiney and complainy adults get their way.
high school coach in slc valley | 1:10 p.m. July 22, 2008
I coach another sport but have seen this time and time again. Parents with money worrying only about their own child. Then they get the administration ears and the rest is history. At 5 cents an hour, Coach Tiller will be better off not having to deal with parents and admins like this one. The kids are the ones that will suffer from him not being around i am sure. This is the main reason our society is having breakdowns. The inmates are running things. No one is held accountable. Due dates are a thing of the past. Dedication? - that's something out the door as well. Good luck to the coach in his future endeavors!
New Coach?? | 1:13 p.m. July 22, 2008
If the adminisration of Carbon High carries out the termination of Head Football Coach Tim Tiller, than they are spineless. Greg Stanfield, Get A Back Bone. Do the right thing. Allow Tiller to do what he does best...Coach. Any other coach that accepts the job from Carbon High as the Head Football Coach under these circumstances is as spineless as the administration that hired you. No reputable coach would accept the position that has been offered in such a manner.
Death row? | 1:19 p.m. July 22, 2008
Based on the previous comment about death row I wanted to find out more about the last comment, but I do not find anything and the school's own website (which does not mention previous schools for him but does for the Vice) spells his name two different ways neither of them matching the spelling in the article, maybe we should focus more on academics?? It states that he did coach football before, maybe it really is a conspiracy to return him to power, j/k. Seriously, where has he coached/taught before, from where did this guy originate? What is this talk about prep students going to jail? Was that just meant as an analogy?
Parent101 | 1:28 p.m. July 22, 2008
As a parent of students in this district, I would advise all who are commenting that the whole story has not been told. There are some things about this coach that have not been told here. There are reasons that the kids do not want to come out and play for this coach, some not very postivie or morale. The way playing time is distributed is questionable. One thing you need to credit the kids for is that they don't feel good about Coach Mele, the only assistant that has stood by them through all the good and bad not being asked back because Tiller needed someone to place blame on for his bad coaching. They do have respect for Mele, they don't for Tiller, and he is the cause of that. The kids have been dedicated, the parents have been supportive, the coach HAS NOT done his job, he has been preoccupied by other activities.
dyc | 1:29 p.m. July 22, 2008
Why is it that you accept he was fired by text message? I've never heard of an administrator firing an employee that way. They're too careful. Usually the district office is actively involved before anyone is fired. I think some of you should stop accepting that something is true, just because the newspaper or the coach says it is true.
U R FIRED :( | 1:34 p.m. July 22, 2008
LOL! Nice text message firing!! :)
And just why are you coaching? | 1:46 p.m. July 22, 2008
'Tiller is convinced his firing means the football program will be cancelled for this year.
"You have to get a new coaching staff in place in two and a half weeks. My coaches are not going to coach, they've made that very clear," said Tiller.'
OK, admittedly, it's been a few years since I was in high school, but isn't the athletic program about THE KIDS? If "His Coaches" really cared about the kids more than they cared about their buddy, wouldn't they continue to coach the team?
Apparently, coaching high school sports (at least at Carbon) has more to do with reliving YOUR high school glory and supporting your buddies than actually coaching the kids and teaching them character.

re: Parent101 | 1:51 p.m. July 22, 2008
You might want to get your facts straight. Coach Mele was rehired on as an assistant coach. Coach Mele has been attending weight training with the boys for weeks. My son respects both coaches. Parent101...you need to get clued in.
Coached against Tiller | 1:55 p.m. July 22, 2008
I went head to head with Tiller last year. We played Carbon, and I know that it is always going to be a win for us. Well I learned the hard way last year. We won, but it was a close. His team did not lay down like the teams in the past. Carbon has made a big mistake! Tiller is a good coach and I doubt the next coach will be anything but a joke! Any coach that would even take that job is a bigger joke then Greg Stanfield! Way to Carbon! Has anyone asked why Stanfield keeps moving from job to job over the years? Just ask us here in Grantsville!!
RE: Parent 101 | 2:00 p.m. July 22, 2008
The whole story is that you are clueless. Carbon High has had low participation for years. Are you blaming this on a coach that has only coached one full season? I have a kid in the program and he is very upset that this is happening to "his" coach. I believe you have an agenda. Is it personal? Jealous maybe? I am only guessing because I can't fathom where you are coming from. Whose morals need to be checked? Personally knowing Tiller, I know he has done his job and he is very dedicated. You have it backwards and your advising erroneous and misinformed.
Re--parent 101 | 2:14 p.m. July 22, 2008
Parent 101,
Is this an admission of you conspiring to get him fired? Seriously, for you to insinuate that play time was not fairly distributed; is this based on your years of coaching experience? To say that kids do not want to play for him; are these kids brothers of the kids who did not want to play for Herrick, Jorgensen, Gressman and Moynier (I am forgetting a couple from this merry go round) for the same reason? They are simply slacking off and that is a convenient excuse! I would be interested in you divulging the reasons for you not liking the guy; as to what other things we are not aware of.
BTW-I would really like to know Jorg's opinion on this matter, I would hope that the AD has a big part of this decision making process.

everything in any athletic program? Not about teaching the kids about life skills in addition to sport skills?.....Boy our priorities are screwy....
Former Player | 3:05 p.m. July 22, 2008
It is in my opinion, and i am not the only one that it is a fantastic thing to do to the program As a Sr on the team last year i was mistreated in the opportunity for me to do well in my Sr year by a coach who obviously follows the big idea that he is just going to show up out of a very successful Jr high coaching career and do as well with the kids he has. First off when you have a team with 40 players playing teams with only 20 its almost a guarantee that your going to be successful, with him bringing this attitude to a team that has the lowest numbers in the state but also has an ungodly amount of talent and tries to put on a show with his so called ninth grade superstars and shunning the rest of the senior classes final time to play. It is a fantastic thing that happened and i couldn't be happier for those kids who might have a chance to finally do their best and play
Former Player | 3:06 p.m. July 22, 2008
we just need to get a real coaching staff instead of his pathetic excuse for one.. someone who loves and knows the game like the rondinelii brothers or another troy moynier
PAY ATTENTION | 3:31 p.m. July 22, 2008
To all of those who keep saying he was fired by TXT message, READ THE ARTICLE AGAIN! Better yet let me cut and paste for you: "he was fired via a message on his cell" Hmmmmm doesn't say anywhere TXT message, just says message. I know Stanfield and I would hardly call him spineless. He was also a good coach other people just have other philosophies. If you think NO ONE but Stanfield had a say in this then you are sadly mistaken. The district had to know, the AD, the VP Coach Bean, etc... I say Boo to Deseret News for writing an article to CREATE controversy! You should have waited til you talked to both people. You do realize Carbon is a small town and either way you look at it 1 person or the other will be fighting with all this drama. I am a MAJOR DNEWS fan, but I think this was a POOR Choice! Next time get the facts First.
Solution | 3:35 p.m. July 22, 2008
Take Athletics out of public school. Let the public sector run them. There too expensive and benefit too few. The money is desperately needed to get better teachers, updated facilities, and current material
admin | 3:39 p.m. July 22, 2008
Administrators do some strange things when it comes to sports and coaches. I doubt we will ever get the whole story from an administrator, most seem more interested in their owm power than the well being of teachers, coaches and students. They do whatever they want and teachers fall in line in order to keep their jobs, they don't want to challenge or question the almighty ADMINISTRATOR.
FormerStudent | 4:06 p.m. July 22, 2008
I was on Student Gov. with coach Tiller at CEU, He is a great guy with a sincere love for football and the people he surrounds. When i was at carbon from 03-06 We won on average of about one game a year. So obviously two in one season was an improvement, the program needs TIME not a miracle. People, stop whining and start supporting your local events!
SoCal Sportsman | 4:10 p.m. July 22, 2008
There is no excuse for a cell phone firing. This story sounds reminiscent of those insensitive community councils we saw in "Hoosiers" and "Remember the Titans." Glad I live in California! Politics in High School Sports---will it ever end? Will parents ever realize how little these High school coaches are paid for the stress they are under? Fact: It works out to a buck eighty-five per hour. It's just not much and certainly, any poor-compensated High School coach should get a second season shot.
Some things never change | 4:11 p.m. July 22, 2008
WOW!! Does this really suprise everyone? Has Carbon High ever had a football coach last more than a few years since the 1950's are 60's? Carbon High administration is pathetic. If they want to fire football coaches every other year, they should start by cleaning house within the administration. Hire people who have integrity and will stand by their hiring decisions, and not listen to the whining community. No matter what community you live in theres always going to be disgruntled parents. So grow a backbone Carbon High administration and stand by your hiring decisions and give them a chance to succeed!!!!!!
KG | 4:34 p.m. July 22, 2008
Carbon has so many issues off the field that it is not surprise that they can't get a team on the field. That is the single worst place I ever had to play, and I played at Carbon at least 3 times a year all through HS. Poor sportsmanship, terrible fans, and a terrible school environment. This really comes as not surprise.
Emery Alum | 4:35 p.m. July 22, 2008
Once again Carbon makes a complete mockery of the work sports by even attempting to put together a coaching staff that resembles that of their big brother from the south. Go Emery and hopefully we get a bye week based on Carbon cancelling their

Solution you are wrong....Athletics are what keep many students out of trouble and kept them on the track of gaining an education. Your college must recognize this since given equal credit, they will take a student who excells in both athletics and acdemics over just an acdemic acheiver. Kids of all kinds need to be accomodated in our system, and if the funds were managed correcly there should be ample to go around. Don't discrimate just because to don't participate. Not to mention childhood obesity!!
To Coach J | 5:11 p.m. July 22, 2008
"And I would dare say on a percentage coaches work harder for kids than teachers."
If the public is really interested in getting more teachers in the classroom, how about getting rid of the coach-first, teacher-if-I-have-time? A football season never passes without a coach or other athletic supporter praising the life lessons learned, character building, etc. of sports participation. However, don't you think, having a dedicated full-time teacher in the classroom would have a greater affect on many more students in our over-crowded classrooms?

I was raised in a 3A school and a small town. I spent my summers on a family ranch. I missed the football camps along with other players who had family responsibilities.
We were shunned for the first few games because of a lack of dedication from the players and coaches, but we enjoyed challenging for positions everyday at practice and beating the crap out of those who the coaches felt were more dedicated during the summer.
By the middle of the season we had the starting positions and the dedicated players had special teams. It's a small town; family responsibility comes first not a summer football program. I would rather play against weight lifters than the boys who had thrown hay all summer.
Sounds like a case of whiny parents who know their Childs summer dedication is not going to get them into BYU. That’s life, its only high school sports. Focus on good grades they will get you into college with greater success than athletics.

Every coach that I have known that has been let go-amd i've known a few- has been fired due to parent pressure on the administration. Usually a small group who think their kids have D-1 talent and are not getting the playing time they deserve. Don't know the facts of this case, but they sure sound famiiliar.
Rondinelli | 6:44 p.m. July 22, 2008
I am Buzz Rondinelli,
I do not agree with my name being put into this, even if it is just in the comments. Coach Tiller was doing the right things and I did have one meeting with the man and really considered Coaching with him, my work schedule would not have allowed it.I disagree with the firing of the man and his staff by text, but I do not know what happened. I work with one of his Coaches (Marcus Bott),and this guy is dedicated and willing to learn and do whatever it taked to help this program improve. I think they really must have another plan or direction for this program or they will probably just shut it down.
Go Dinos!

my two cents | 6:48 p.m. July 22, 2008
I don't know how good or bad this coach was, but having a lot of seniors do their own conditioning at the college of eastern utah says alot.
In my opinion they should keep this coach for one more year and give him a second chance. He has some returning starters coming back and it would be unfair to the kids to have the football program cancelled for their senior year.
