the sound was terrible and the words inaudible when Myli sang. Too bad.
Good Show | 12:27 a.m. July 5, 2008
Stadium of Fire was good this year. The fireworks were especially fun. The blue man group was very entertaining. In all honesty, the sound for the Miley Cyrus portion of the show was very poor. About half way through her set, it was getting a little better- but even when she was talking by herself it was difficult to hear her. I was to the left of the stage where the sound should have been pretty good.

I know others who sat in other areas of the stadium made the same remark. However, I am not disappointed- the fireworks once again amazed.

I've heard Miley Cyrus sing twice. Pathetic both times. It looks like it's PR and lights and I don't know what else that makes people even want to go see her in concert. I admit I didn't even care to read this article, just had to respond to the headline.

New Miley Fan | 3:27 a.m. July 5, 2008
It seems the negative comments will now proliferate. My daughter and I watched on the Jumbotron. I wasn't a fan but I was really impressed. She has star power. I would probably never buy her music, but she is no american idol castaway.

I sold the tickets we had to pay rent. People thought they would wait to the end and get tickets for next to nothing. I'm sure some did. A lot did not because people that were lowballing me a few days earlier were causing my phone to ring off the hook on July 4th. I guess the Provo paper ran an article saying "the ticket bubble had popped". I think the writer of the article was only part right. A lot of people who waited to the end and then wanted tickets below face, just didn't go.

I was half a mile away, north of the stadium, and I could hear the sound just fine.

she did awesome

I haven't been to the Stadium of Fire in 12 years. It was wonderful! But I agree with the others - I couldn't understand a word of what Miley Cyrus sang and could barely hear what she said. Every other part of the program was fabulous and intelligible. BYU or Miley's sound people need to figure out how to do a vocal performance in a stadium and not an enclosed arena.
Utes Rock | 8:45 a.m. July 5, 2008
How come Des news mentioned the guy putting a BYSPEW hat on but didn't mention Jones pulling out a Utes Jersey and shouting- GO UTES! That was awesome! I laughed my head off!
SOCCER MOM | 8:52 a.m. July 5, 2008
Miley is fun and uplifting. I am as big of a fan as my two girls. They did not mind that the sound was poor, they knew all the words...

MIley cyrus is so hot, she was so good last night. Me and my brother were screaming the whole time "I love you miley, your so hot." I am definately going to her next concert in Utah. I LOVE YOU MILEY CYRUS.

When people pay $50-$125 to see a show, they should be able to HEAR it! Blue Man group was awesome but didn't get enough stage time. I would love to see their entire show in Vegas sometime. The sound crew for Miley Cirus should be fired because we honestly couldn't hear a word she was saying. Sad for all the kids who went to see her.
The fireworks show was the best I've ever seen by far, and made it worth the trip from Ogden.

Glenn Beck -great
Program and Patriotism-spectacular
Blue Man Group- OK
Miley Cyrus- not worth mentioning
Fireworks- AMAZING as always
No Glenn Beck photos? | 10:32 a.m. July 5, 2008
Would have been nice to see a few.
We Could Hear... | 11:34 a.m. July 5, 2008
...but we couldn't see. With all the amazing jumbo screen technology available why don't the show producers spend a little of the gate on BIGGER SCREENS!

The show was very good and very entertaining. Miley did a great job live, and the Blue Man Group was very fun! :-) The fireworks were the best part, even though we are still trying to get ashes out of our hair.

For all you loosers bad mouthing Miley, let's see you on stage in front of 65,000 people when you were 15! This kid has star power, plus!

With all due respect to all of you complaining about the sound, I don't think that I have ever been to a stadium of fire event where the sound for the main performer was decent, and I have been to several.
I think that the only way to really enjoy the concert portion is to do what anonymous 7:21 did and be a half mile away. I have done that before and the sound was better. Go figure.

There is a lesson in here about America, and where we have moved from the correct direction, to where we gather to watch a mediocre singer who is barely 16, as the main attraction to celebrate the independence of America.

Everyone can do as they please, but I think something is wrong there. The ironic thing is, folks likely had a great time, felt a bit of a twinge in their hearts when the jets flew overhead, and really felt enthused and happy to be Americans as the fireworks flew, and the patriotic songs were played.

Tomorrow, they will be driving 80 mph on the freeway with their cell phones glued to their heads, giving the finger to anyone who gets in their way. The bosses and managers will still berate their employees, and the higher ups will go back to figuring out how to lower wages and benefits, and line their own pockets as they sell America down the drain to other nations by moving operations off shore.

Perhaps instead of TELLING God to bless America, we ought to be ASKING God to bless America, because American hardly deserves to be blessed much anymore.

You know, cyrus is the result of a huge effective publicity machine. She's not good enough for Idol. She sings through her nose. Lipsynchs her songs. She's an average singer. What can you expect from a generation who is constantly being fed mediocrity (jonas bros....). nothing more to be said.
It was Great | 11:43 a.m. July 5, 2008
My 75 year old Grandmother almost passed out when she saw Miley--she was so excited to see her sing. We had the time of our lives last night. Best event EVER!
matt | 11:48 a.m. July 5, 2008
I had very low expectations for Miley, and somehow she was still worse than I expected. I don't blame her for the terrible show, I blame the FF comitee for choosing her and completely alienating the loyal older stadium attendees who have been supporting the show for years. They totally and knowingly sold us out just to make a few dollars and headlines. I know many people who support the stadium each year and couldn't get tickets beacause the commitee allowed scalpers to buy 25 at a time. They knew very well that by getting a teeny bopper many loyal stadium fans wouldnt be able to get tickets, for that they should be ashamed. If they couldn't see that this would happen, they aren't qualified to run an event this big.
Unanomous | 12:13 p.m. July 5, 2008
I disagree with the people who said Miley and the sound was horrible! Miley was absouletly amazing...This is the first time I had been to the Stadium of Fire and I loved every minute of it..Miley did awesome!
More to It Than Voice | 12:58 p.m. July 5, 2008
Some people still don't get it. Great performers USUALLY are not the ones with the absolute best voices. The great performers have star power and mass appeal. Go listen to your perfectly pitched opera singers.

I'll take Miley, Paul McCartney, Bowie, Hagar, etc.
None of them would get on Idol, correct, and no Idol winner has yet had a tenth of the career of those mentioned.
Carly | 2:33 p.m. July 5, 2008
I don't think the sound was Miley's problem. Even when Glen Beck was talking, the mic would kind of go in and out. When they tried to turn it up, it did the squeaky reverb thing. I think, for as professional the Stadium of Fire is trying to be, they should spend some of that "teeny bopper" money to get a better sound system!!
Anonymous | 2:33 p.m. July 5, 2008
In response to the person who was wondering about ticket prices, my daughter and son-in-law went over at 6:30 PM and got tickets at face value after asking around for about 15 minutes. There were a lot of tickets to be had.
parkcity | 3:12 p.m. July 5, 2008
the sound was definitely the problem. it wasnt the singing. by the time you are a hundred yards away from the stage the weak array of speakers they had just sounded like the flimsy speakers on my laptop. anybody who's been to any kind of arena rock show has most likely seen the stacks of speakers 5 times as big as what there was last night, and while that might blow out the ears of those sitting close, you just have to set up some more speakers closer to the audience.
gswilson5 | 3:27 p.m. July 5, 2008
It is called stadium of fire right? So how come there was no fire? Can anyone tell me why they didn't use there signature Flames during the theme song?
Marc | 3:59 p.m. July 5, 2008
I agree that the sound quality was rather poor, it was pretty tough to hear what she was saying while singing. I was actually sort of curious if poor sound quality is a new strategy for hiding lipsynching. The music wasn't that interesting so I spent most my time trying to figure out if she was lipsynching or not, and I never came to a conclusion.
Mileys2ndmom | 4:09 p.m. July 5, 2008
Miley did great last night. The sound problem wasn't her fault. My daughter and I saw her concert last October, both nights, and she rocked. She has great stage presence and is a super entertainer. You people who have nothing better to do than bad mouth a 15 year old. I would like to see you get up in front of 6o,ooo people and do a better job. Miley is a 15 year old teenager growing up in the spotlight with people watching her every move. I personally think she is a wonderful girl and a great role model. What 15 year old hasn't made mistakes? At least she is taking responsibility for them. Miley we love you and will always support you. It wasn't her fault that the sound was lousy and the stage and her band had technical difficulties before she came on. Give the Girl A Break!
FF Committee chickened out | 4:15 p.m. July 5, 2008
RE ticket policy--everyone knew when the 25-ticket limit was announced it would be scalper heaven. My cynical side figures the FF Committee calculated a strategy to transfer the risk of being stuck with unsold tickets to the scalpers (and to greedy amateur scalpers). In the final week, there were countless field tickets online going for half or less of face value. The pros knew exactly which sections/quantities to buy, and where, when and for how much to resell them--their business is taking a CALCULATED risk, and they make back their investment in the first few they resell. The REAL risk ended up with the amateurs.

The law of supply and demand kicked in, and those who knew where to look got their tickets at a fair price. Many, though either paid too much in the early resell panic so their little girl could see her dream show, or gave up because the early resell prices were crazy. Bottom line, the FF Committee didn't serve their public well.
Miley wasn't the problem | 5:07 p.m. July 5, 2008
Yes there are a few people that had differing views on Miley Cyrus' singing ability, but as a music professional myself, the sound last night was very poor.
Miley a role model? | 5:25 p.m. July 5, 2008
From the grandmas comments about Miley being a good example and role model in the article and Mileys2ndmom above, are you not aware of her recent incident where she has admitted posing half clothed in a major newspaper?

I don't care how much you love her music, or think she's such a good girl - she's not. I realize we're all human, but that's pretty serious for someone who has millions of little girls looking up to her - it's inexcusable. As for my children, they were disgusted and made the decision to no longer listen to her, no matter how much they liked her before.
Dan Roper | 6:16 p.m. July 5, 2008
Professional singers travel with their own sound crews and equipment. She was responsible for any poor sound quality that existed.
ehhh! | 6:57 p.m. July 5, 2008
To: "More To It Than Voice" Youre putting Miley in the same category as Paul McCartney and Bowie?
SHAME ON YOU!!
I wasnt too impressed with the Blue Men and Miley. She said she was "excited to be there" about 20 times but her performance was pretty lame to me. I sat patiently waiting for the fireworks then left. Not worth the money I spent!! She kept telling the audience to be louder but maybe it wasnt worth the yell????
Emma | 7:14 p.m. July 5, 2008
The best part of the evening was the fireworks. Amazing. The Blue Man Group was awesome (I saw them at their last show here in Salt Lake). Glenn Beck was terrific. I wasn't too interested in Miley.

Thanks to my grandpa for the tickets. We were fortunate not to have to stand in any line or pay for the tickets, since he's a General Authority.

It is so cool that we were able to go to such a top-notch event right here in town.

I look forward to next year's Stadium of Fire.
GoodGuyGary | 8:11 p.m. July 5, 2008
""She's just a real good role model," Olander said. "She's not bad at all. She sets out a good example for kids.""

Real good role model? What has she done? Well, at least it is from a 12 years old....
I'm with Utes Rock! | 8:17 p.m. July 5, 2008
I thought it was pretty interesting that the DNews didn't mention the Utes jersey either. Shows where there loyalties are.
I'm sure plenty of people went to see Miley, but you have to remember, she is a Disney money maker. They can take someone with no talent and make them a big star!!!
Need better fireworks | 8:21 p.m. July 5, 2008
I was sitting near the stadium for the fireworks, and while overall it was a surprisingly good show, I couldn't believe how lame the finale was. (And no, I didn't leave during the big pause) I realize that I'm spoiled, having grown up in Pittsburgh and being regularly treated to some of the best fireworks shows in the country, but for the length of the show here, it really would have gone a long way to shave a couple minutes off the show to put more explosives in the finale.
AUSSIE | 8:50 p.m. July 5, 2008
MIley was terrible - absolutely horrible. Glen Beck was incredible. I actually met some people during the parade and they mentioned that they had come to Utah to watch the Stadium of Fire because Glenn Beck had mentioned it was the place to be. They are not Mormons, and really don't know much about the religion.

The Stadium of Fire was worth every cent, and yes, we bought our tickets the day before on e-bay for $55.00.
More Than Voice | 9:56 p.m. July 5, 2008
Of course McCartney Bowie et al have had longer more illustrious careers. My point is that being a great entertainer doesn't come from winning a TV reality show.

I better run and get some lemons at the grocery store before they run out. It seems everybody is buying them and sucking on them. We had a great time at the SOF even though the organizers are grossly incompetent.

Who will be the entertainment next year? How about Marie Osmond? Now there's a good role model.
You Didn't Know That? | 10:01 p.m. July 5, 2008
We sat and watched Glen Beck practice his routine the night before. When he walked away two teenage girls blurted out something as if they had just had an epiphany. "He's a DORK" they said. That was really funny.
tigerlily | 10:07 p.m. July 5, 2008
the blue man group was funny and entertaining. miley was was good but the sounc was really bad. and to the one who said they got ashes in there hair: we were right next to where the fireworks went off and we didn't get any ashes on us.
maybe next year | 10:13 p.m. July 5, 2008
Hey-- at least it wasnt some twangy CW "artist"-- we went last year to the brooks and dunn thing, (got free tix) as long as it isn't some also-ran country singer, its a step up.

Crappy sound-- sounds like a typical outdoor concert.
Need Better Fireworks: So, you didn't pay for the entertainment that you did get and you are still whining? Pittsburgh? Nah-- you are a true blue Utah County-ite (let me guess, you popped your own popcorn and brought water from home as a treat)

Before you all shoot down the effort on the show, try doing it yourself.. 50 bones is pretty cheap for the show that you received, and free is a killer deal for those who were outside the stadium enjoying the fireworks.

even when I suffered through the country singers of years past, I got my moneys worth (when I had to pay).
Role model | 10:30 p.m. July 5, 2008
Can't comment on the quality of the show, because I wasn't there, but I just have to comment on the "good role model" thing. A FIFTEEN year old who says Sex and the City is her favorite show is not my idea of a good role model. Maybe she's working up to a photo shoot for Cosmopolitan.
Anonymous | 11:00 p.m. July 5, 2008
When are they going to get a musical act that's not country???????????????????????
Ace Ventura | 11:17 p.m. July 5, 2008
For those that are begging for the rest of us to cut Miley some slack on the sound, let me clue you in: as Dan Roper noted, touring musicians are responsible for their own sound. They bring their own complete setup and crew. When they step on the stage, their crew is in charge, not anyone from the venue.

As far as Miley being a primo entertainer, I would reserve that for a real professional, who understands that the relationship with fans and audience is a fragile thing, and keeps respect for fans a top priority. Sound is absolutely THE most important ingredient in that ongoing fan experience. A true professional entertainer does everything needed up front to ensure top notch sound.

Neil Diamond, for example, has a voice double who sings during the sound setup. If you close your eyes, you can't tell the difference. I was on a TV crew shooting his concert one time and they spent over an hour fine-tuning their sound system to the hall, ensuring that every corner had good sound. THAT is what it takes to be a top entertainer instead of a flash in the pan! Consistently good shows.
teri | 11:22 p.m. July 5, 2008
maybe next year, stay home, doesn't sound like you would be happy at the event, if you paid or not. Stop YOUR whining.
She's not any worse | 11:47 p.m. July 5, 2008
>She's not good enough for Idol

That's a pretty severe slam, since the "singers" on American Idol are always mediocre at best.
re Dan Roper | 1:02 a.m. July 6, 2008
The Stadium of Fire producers from LA, Chuck Gayton and Wayne Baruch provided the sound not Miley. If there is someone to blame for a bad show it is them
Yo Ace Ventura! | 1:04 a.m. July 6, 2008
Not defending anybody here but maybe N. Diamond's sound guy wasn't very good at his job if it took him an hour! And, sound changes significantly when the hall or stadium fills with people.
Angry Airman | 1:05 a.m. July 6, 2008
The organizers of the show should be ashamed of themselves. I was with the military families and all I saw was the back of the Producers heads as they yelled at their staff using some pretty severe profanity.

I really suggest the Freedom Festival reconsider using them in the future. They do not represent what we stand for.
awesomeron | 2:45 a.m. July 6, 2008
I went and saw Kung Fu Panda with the Wife and Kids, first time I have been out on the 4th in years. Nothing Wrong with Glenn Beck and nothing wrong with Cyrus. Love her Dad. She’s cute, kids, love her and she appears to be closer to their reality then Parents want to think. When I was young it was Annette and to a lesser extent Karin. Nothing much has changed, kids have their idols and nothing much parents can do about that. They could do a lot worse then Cyrus. Your kids are not coming back from a Cyrus Concert with rings, things, and Tattoos, (Maybe in Hawaii where Body Art is way Cool I am sure some Girl has a Cyrus Tattoo no big deal), Cyrus as far as I can see is fairly straight. The fact that she exposed a small part of her back in a very tasteful picture (although to young) just get over, not an issue. It was not dope and it was not Sex. She loves the Camera ad the Camera loves her. Her voice is okay. The #1 Song last week was "I Kissed A Girl" sung by a girl.
