the yellow card accumulation rule is worthless.
Real Mediocre | 7:52 a.m. July 3, 2008
Mediocrity League Soccer, with nine points separating first-place Los Angeles from last-place San Jose, that's what we get to ENJOY here in Utah. Man, are we lucky or what? So glad we can help a struggling millionaire with his start-up sports enterprise. It's not just happening here either, that's the sad part. Are we gullible or what?

When does real football start?
Real football | 8:54 a.m. July 3, 2008
Cougar fan:
Real football started in April when Salt Lake played Chicago.
How much do they use their feet in your so-called "real football".....I mean, for something besides standing there in a huddle doing nothing.

Re: Real football | 9:11 a.m. July 3, 2008
Very true that "real football" includes using your feet.
I'm just very disappointed that Real Salt Lake (and any other team in Minor League Soccer) just don't seem to be able to play "real" football . Well, I guess they play real amateur football, but they don't really do that very well either. Unless of course you like to watch poor ball handling, lousy tactics and a defense that looks lost.
Its too bad that economic realities here in the US mean that the nations top athletes go into the NBA and NFL, which leaves the scrubs to play soccer.

Futbol is the most played sport in the world. Don't knock it, just because you may not be physically fit enough to enjoy the sport. Get off the couch on sundays, ditch the beer and chips, try your "foot" at a real sport. You just might like it "Sam I am".
Re: Real Mediocre | 9:38 a.m. July 3, 2008
Real Mediocre,
You're complaining about parody in a sports league? By that logic the NBA Western Conference is "mediocre" as well. Glad we could help millionare Larry Miller, too, eh?

Ummmm ....
parody: a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, or author, by means of humorous or satiric imitation.
Yup, that describes MLS soccer all right.
And for the record, I for one am ticked as heck that any tax dollars are spent to help any sports franchise, including Larry Miller's various enterprises.

I am finally going to an RSL game. I am looking forward to making fun of everyone. I am cheap, so I got the KFC $14 tickets. See you there.
Utefan | 9:55 a.m. July 3, 2008
Hey impostor I would never go to a game where I know the team would lose. I have already payed enough for that stadium, I practically own RSL. Besides, I would rather spend the time with my wife and kids than waste away watching sock her.
We need this | 9:56 a.m. July 3, 2008
We need this win. I think if we win this game we are going to be in the playoffs. It just seems like one of those pivotal games. Perhaps Duechar will finally start putting the ball in the net. Let's hope Dema being gone doesn't hurt us too much.
I love the fact haters are coming on here and telling us what good soccer looks like. We all watch a billion soccer games, but some baseball fan is going to come on here and rate the quality of MLS. We will sure listen to that opinion.

... you just might like it. Don't admit that to your friends though. You wouldn't be able to make fun of real football anymore.
I just hope Kreis thinks about the lineup he is going to put on the field instead of just throwing a player (Cutler) on the field because he "plays that position." The only way we play good soccer is by fielding our most talented team.
Go REAL

Everybody come out and support the team tonight. Make it happen, RSL. A lot of people will be there for the first time. Make them want to come back.
Welcome to the game Utefan. Bring your family and friends. "Are you ready for some futbol."
Party time!!!

RSL is not run off your tax money, but the Utes are run (at a loss) off mine.

Huge game tonight. Its time we pull away from the pack.
Re: Utefan | 10:41 a.m. July 3, 2008
You've almost paid for the RSL stadium yourself? What, do you live in a hotel in SLC I guess?
Re: Real Mediocre | 10:52 a.m. July 3, 2008
Thank you for your comment. I am sorry all that bitterness from being picked last or not at all for the soccer team as a kid has carried into your "adult" years. Also take a look at what tax dollars are being used, it is derived from the TRT tax generated from TOURIST visiting the state! NOT FROM YOUR POCKET! So relax and just be grateful that we have another professional sports team in Utah. And if you don't like it fine, but why get all uppity about it? I hate softball but I don't waste my time and energy telling people how bad I hate it! Seriously good luck champ!
Utefan | 11:01 a.m. July 3, 2008
I am just playing guys I am a real big soccer fan. I mean it sure beats watching Utah football, 4th and 18 will get you every time! I hate how Harline and Collie are still open!
TheActuary | 11:08 a.m. July 3, 2008
comments on any story involving REAL are all the same. You have devoted fans, like myself, who care about the team. And then you have those who doubtfully read the article, but just write some ignorant garbage about how football is the only true sport. Do you feel threatened by soccer? I guess I can almost understand the distain about the soccer stadium, but I don't understand the hate.
Ironic.... | 11:29 a.m. July 3, 2008
Utefan complaining about a sport franchise being run by taxes while devotedly supporting his beloved utes... a franchise (and don't try to tell me that college football isn't about winning and making money. Why else would they institute the bowl "championship" series and all the other bowl games?) run completely by tax dollars.
Keep moaning and groaning, I'm sure it helps you out somehow. I'm still amazed that people can't get the fact that residents aren't paying for the stadium straight.
Oh well, some people are just hopeless eh? Keep up the good work RSL. You're moving in the right direction.

Guys I am so excited about going to my first RSL game. I don't know the rules very well yet. Can somebody tell me what the "off-side" rule means? See ya there and GO RSL.
Re: Cougar Fan | 12:19 p.m. July 3, 2008
I sure hope you have one of those food storage kits and such cuz real is going to be here quite a while.
Oh, and i cant wait for BYU zoobies to blow one of their first 3 games to eliminate any chance of going to the BCS.
And say they can get past that, they will always have that loss at the end of the season. They aint winning up at RES this time, mark my words

BYU has mens and womens soccer teams. Are you a Cougar Fan? If so, you probably should support the BYU soccer teams. Maybe you only support BYU throwball.... how lame that would make you. support all BYU sports or none. I don't like lukewarm fans rooting for BYU.
I am a real Cougar Fan, and love all things BYU, especially BYU soccer.

I will admit that BYU will not go the entire season undefeated, but it will be a fun season (I hope they prove me wrong). RSL is fun to watch this year. Look for Morales to have a big game tonight. MLS has quality & fun soccer to watch. It isn't the EPL, but it is still fun. I think the MLS is underrated. I believe in 10 years the MLS will be considered a top 5 league in the world. The next generation of kids follow soccer a lot more than my generation ever did. GO RSL!!! Take the conference lead for a couple of days.
Re: Careful utefan | 12:51 p.m. July 3, 2008
Don't worry the lineup has been announced and of course Cutler is in the line up..
I still don't understand it. Why not throw Nunez in there and we can have some fun up front. With Morales feeding the three strikers. That would be a fun game! Oh wait we have to keep Nunez fresh cause Duechar hasn't made it through a game in weeks.

Throwball is fine. Especially if you're a rookie getting millions for having potential.
Soccer/football is by far my favorite sport and there's nothing ever written here to change it.

The Dr | 1:40 p.m. July 3, 2008
People, you do realize that because of the MLS playing on the off season of every european season the Dr is going to be a little tired.
This is supposed to be his break time, not the beginning of another season. The fact that he can still go (remember how becks had chronic injury when he came) is a testament to him.
Please dont rag on the Dr, who we need to rag on is our wings for not getting the guy, that is a foot taller then everyone else, the ball

Go RSL and go Liverpool FC.

How come Cougar fans are the most annoying people on this earth? I'm not to say ing I haven't met any annoying Utes, or Aggies, or ReAL fans, etc. But BYU fans take the title for most annoying fans in sports.
Offsides | 3:08 p.m. July 3, 2008
That's when the ball is passed to someone who is ahead of everyone on the defense. If they beat them after the pass is made it is fine but if they are ahead before the pass that is offsides
I hope we can finish strong | 3:08 p.m. July 3, 2008
This will be the 3rd year I've gone to this game. The last 2 were actually on the 4th of July. I really hope this year turns out better. If we lose in the last 5 minutes of the game again I am gonna go on the field and play on the back line. Word of advice if we're ahead and the game is almost over let's copy Spain's national team and keep the ball off our half of the pitch. It's really not that hard.
Copy Spain? | 3:33 p.m. July 3, 2008
While I am a huge Spain fan. They were so shaky the last 10 minutes in the final. Missing passes, headers. Germany all but scored. Instead I say we copy Spain and attack, attack, attack. Please don't bunker.
Doctor | 3:38 p.m. July 3, 2008
I completely agree with the Doctor comment. If we lure a guy who scores a ton of goals over here and then aren't able to find people to service him the ball- then we made a poor decision. We need to get true wingers in this upcoming transfer window. We could break out of the pack when that happens with the west for the taking and a new stadium - how sweet that would be!
Real Cougar | 4:05 p.m. July 3, 2008
Ladies, Ladies, we need to stop all this Football vs. Futebol bullcrap and get back to the subject at hand. I think the point of this comment thread is to figure out ways that RSL can be better, even if it's painful.
Anti-soccer people: we welcome your criticisms, if they are valid. But railing on a team for an issue that has been torn apart time and time again (i.e. the Stadium funding) is not one of them.
Anyways, let's start with a way RSL can improve: dump Cutler, teach Dema to slow down (not get into the card position), and rally with the rest of the MLS to bring REAL OFFICIALS (i.e. British imports) to the league. That would be a great start!

Predicting loss | 4:09 p.m. July 3, 2008
Major RSL fan here. I predict we lose because Culter gets the start. This guy may be an OK sub sometimes, but as in KC, he can really blow it.
1-0.
Nobody seems to be saying that RSL is likely to be in 5th place or tied with Colorado in 5th place after the weekend.
Believe it. sorry everyone, but this one isn't going to be good for us. After this weekend, we are only likely to win 1 or 2 of the next 6, and maybe 3 in the next 12. Our run is over, and we will be back to 6th or 7th place.

To the bold man who predicted a loss:
Most of the time, I would be willing to back up your prediction. This time, I'm close to willing, except for one thing: Houston is not the same Dynam-ic team that won two MLS Cups. Whether by injury, suspensions, or just poor substitutions, the Texas squad hasn't quite been perfect this year.
And, RSL really has been pretty good at home. Their only bad game was last week against San Jose, who came out with a stick up the .... noses.
That being said, do I picture fame and glory following an RSL win? Not so sure.
Prediction: RSL 1-1 Houston.
Robbie Findley has a good game, assisted by Morales or Beckerman, while Dr. Goals picks up a yellow card and K.C. shows Kreis he isn't worth the time or roster slot to be on the team.

Got to love the trolls. It is getting comical now. I think Utefan is still delusional thinking it is 2004!

I agree with everyone that RSL will lose because of Cutler being in the starting line-up. After him being here for several years, he has done nothing? Give another guy a chance to prove his worth to the team. I do predict RSL to barely make the playoffs this year. Please prove all of us wrong RSL. I hate being right in these circumstances.
Let's get real, as in real | 10:24 p.m. July 3, 2008
Soccer is a fine athletic event, which commands the same respect as similar sports, such as gardening, golf, and dog shows.
If the ReAL (REaL? ReaL?) leadership were truly clever, they would create the ultimate event by letting a dog show break out in the middle of one of their matches.
