Re: But let's be straight | 5:58 p.m. July 1, 2008
Thanks to the polite BYU fans, apologies to the Utes for the few of us that never learned to play well with others.

Was UCLA mediocre after or before being beaten by Utah? UCLA is a coiled rattlesnake and we barely escaped being bitten.

It just seems to me that calling someone else classless is, well, classless, whatever the color. Isn't it enough to just get excited about the possibility of two undefeated, top-ten teams meeting in YOUR house deep in November.

Classy would be hoping both teams end up in a BCS bowl and earn some serious respect for themselves, each other and the rest of the conference.
Utah County Ute Fan | 6:12 p.m. July 1, 2008
The utes are ranked 14# according to Phil Steeles College Football Preview Magazine the most accurate pre-season magazine to date, and TDS is 17.

Utes Win Byu 23-7 this year is my prediction.

GO UTES!!!!!!!!!
P.S. I bleed Red Not blue( Which is impossible to bleed.)
Visionary man | 6:33 p.m. July 1, 2008
I have seen the future and it goes something like this several times during the season:
#1: Johnson takes the snap from the center and drops back to pass, he fires the ball...INTERCEPTED!

#2: Johnson takes the snap for the center and sprints right, he takes a hard hit from the linebacker...FUMBLE!

2008 Utah season: 6-5 with no bowl game. I saw every game all before it has even happened. The Holy War game will hinge on one play (like it usually does) and Utah defense will not stop Collie or Unga, again! Sorry my beloved Utes, but that is the way it will be.

Brian is kinda like Ben Olson. A ton of promise derailed by a ton of injuries - and one last season to make it happen. I wish them both a great year but predict they both will lose hard fought games to the Cougs!
re: Utah County Ute Fan | 6:54 p.m. July 1, 2008
Whoa there fella!! Hey that's pretty impressive being ranked ahead of the mighty-mighty Cougars in one (albeit highly regarded publication)pre-season poll.

Oops, you must've missed that little "pre" prefix denoting that this is only one man's learned prediction. Bask away Ute fans-unless you beat the Maize and Blue in Ann Arbor, this is the highest ranking you will see all season.

Having said that and as a die-hard Cougar fan, I truly do hope you pull off a monumental upset and bring glory to yourself, the MWC, and the entire state of Utah!

Let's look ahead to that glorious future day when the Cougars knock off the Utes at RES for the third straight year sending the 7th ranked Cougars to the Fiesta Bowl and relegating the 10th ranked Utes to the wonderful Las Vegas Bowl.

With the 'Gameday' boys in attendance on a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon-coach Lee Corso will put on a Ute mask and predict a mild upset in front of an evenly-divided crowd of red and blue. Fortunately he will be wrong as usual and Utah fans will file once again forlornly down the hill and catch Trax back to their homes. Can hardly wait!!
re: Visionary Man | 7:25 p.m. July 1, 2008
6-5 huh? So, which game will the Utes decide to cancel to end up with only 11 games on the season?

Bottom line: byU fans are SCARED. They have seen what Utah is capable of with a backup QB or a badly injured QB and all of you byU fans are TERRIFIED about the prospect of facing the Utes with a healthy starting QB.

To recap: Utah won in '05 with a backup QB.

In '06, BJ was the best QB in fall camp but because his knee was still not 100%healthy, the coaches decided to redshirt him and the Utes came within ONE play of beating byU again, with their backup QB.

In '07, BJ suffered a grade 3 seperation in the opener and re-injured it later in the season. IIRC, he fractured his collarbone too. So, with a QB at about 60% healthy Utah was once again ONE play away from winning.

byU fans are AFRAID to see what kind of season Kyle can lead the Utes to with a healthy starting QB.

And they should be afraid. Be VERY, VERY, VERY AFRAID byU fans.

The Utes are going to be AWESOME this year!
Levin | 8:00 p.m. July 1, 2008
This article makes me more excited for the year than before. Nothing could make the Cougars regular season better for me than for them and the Utes to come into Nov 22 each with two or fewer losses. No losses would be nice.
Re: Wyoming Fan | 8:05 p.m. July 1, 2008
Johnson won't get past your defense huh? That's funny, when Utah won 50-0 I realized that Wyoming has no defense. I think BYU came to that same conclusion a week later.

Utah 42- Wyoming 10.
BYU 57- Wyoming 3.
re:re:Visionary Man | 8:26 p.m. July 1, 2008
"And they should be afraid. Be VERY, VERY, VERY AFRAID byU fans."

Isn't that pretty much the same "smack" you Utes have been saying for the past two years before getting beat down on the field. (I mean afraid of what? Losing? You Utes are getting so good at it though).

I was at the past two BYU-Utah games.

BYU pulled some magic at the end, but Utah got some huge breaks during each game to even be in either game. Clearly, the better team got the W, and the loser took the L.

What worries me, is Utah players are all so fragile (maybe a little work conditioning in the weight room?), and not wishing injury to anyone, who knows who will be wearing Red for Utah after playing a physical team like Michigan.

Seriously, If the Utes are going to have a strange mascot, how about a chihuahua or toy-poodle. Bark all you want Ute fans. You know it annoys us, but in the end, BYU seems to be the Big Dog.

Line up your excuses. You better be afraid of UNLV and their Defense.

Bark-bark-bark-bark...

Yeah, right...
An interesting article | 8:34 p.m. July 1, 2008
I would challenge a reporter from the DNews (or the Trib for that matter) to write an article illustrating the perceptions of fans as to where "crossing the line" is with this great debate. In rivalries such as these, jabs that are taken at mishaps of the teams and cultural stereotypes are okay in my book. I think when academics or religion enters the picture, we have crossed the line.

This whole discussion as to which team has less class is pathetic. I have seen enough lack of class on and off the field from both teams that I am pretty convinced that no one holds the moral high ground here. This discussion board is a good example of two groups of children needing to learn some class.

Now that I have said my piece, GO UTES, let's show the TDS what it means to bust the BCS. After all, we did it when it was difficult!

Isn't that called LOSING, once again???

"Having said that and as a die-hard Cougar fan" said by the wise cooger that replyed to me . What did i learn from your ignorant post. Was that the Michigan to cooger fans actually had a decent program last year, losing to App. State in the home opener some tradition. Almost as rich as the Byu tradition of Vegas Bowls, and the 84' national title without the Bcs factor now that all non-Bcs teams have to deal with so go ahead and say utah will lose to your coogers but , in the end Hall and Collie will go home crying due to the fact the "magic happens" effect is now eluded. GO UTES!!!
chester blue | 9:28 p.m. July 1, 2008
I've always had respect for Brian Johnson. He is a class act and he deserves to be successful with his positive mental approach. I do hope he puts up some great stats in nearly all of his games but for me personally, it would be fantastic to see the Utes lose every game they played. I'm a true blue died in the wool Cougar fan and always will be. Now realistically speaking, I think Utah will have at least two losses heading into the Holy War and those teams will most likely be Michigan and Air Force. Yeah, I think Air Force will again present problems for the Utes in Colorado Springs but I also think they will give BYU all they can handle. The Cougars may struggle on the road at WSU and will have their hands full with UCLA in Provo. It's so far away but I'm already geared up. GO COUGS!!!
Ask Phil | 12:54 a.m. July 2, 2008
Phil Steele, who has been the most accurate predictor of final standings than any other preseason rankings out there the last 5 years or so, predicts Utah to be ahead of BYU in the end...

He realizes that with makeshift teams, Utah still was in a position to win against the mighty Cougars...BYU needed two of the most improbable plays ever to win both years, and Phil knows that if the Utes can stay healthy, all signs point to a victory for Utah...

He isn't saying BYU is a bad team, obviously, but nobody can deny that Utah, when at full strength, is a force to be reckoned with...

Here is to the Utes not giving it away again this year! Because we all know BYU didn't earn it; the victories were given to them...
re: chester blue | 1:24 a.m. July 2, 2008
Um, the coogs don't play WSU this year. Do you mean Washington?
Re: chester blue | 5:49 a.m. July 2, 2008
You're not playing WSU. You're playing Washington. You're not a real "true blue died in the wool Cougar fan." You don't know much about sports or schedules, do you?
re:Ask Phil | 10:12 a.m. July 2, 2008
"Utah still was in a position to win against the mighty Cougars..."

Translation: Utah lost the last two years.

"Utah, when at full strength"

Which team in the country is ever a full strength. Was Max Hall at full strength?

"predicts Utah to be ahead of BYU in the end..."

No, he predicted them at preseason which is a shot in the dark.

Chester Blue | 10:59 a.m. July 2, 2008
I stand corrected. I made a typing error but I knew we were playing the Huskies on Sept. 6th. To the guy who should've been in bed at 5:49 am, I know every date and opponent that the Cougars will face this year. I have it on my desk everyday and I check it out on a weekly basis. Also, "You don't know much about sports." I would smoke you in a game of knowledge not only about college football but about every sport there is in the US. Oh, and yes I can see that you are a BYU hater but know this, BYU will win again on your home turf and remember you heard it first from a guy who knows little about sports. BYU 38 Utah 17
Re: Ask Phil | 11:46 a.m. July 2, 2008
Well, you are doing a pretty good job of discrediting BYU for not deserving that win (not), but you Ute fans are to ignorant to realize that it was YOUR defense that has "handed" the games to us. (Because I am so sure that Utah wasn't even trying on those plays, so that means that BYU didn't deserve them)? Ya, I know pretty ridiculous reasoning. BYU earned those plays. Just face it Ute fans, Johnson never has beat BYU and never will.

And ya, maybe you Utes could do something if none of your players got injured & some of your opponents players did get injured. But that's not going to happen. I doubt that there is going to be any teams that don't have anybody injured at any point in the season. You are going to have injuries just like you did last season, and just like BYU did last season. But please spare us cougar fans and don't pull out the injury card again after we beat you again this year. Everybody has injuries, and you just have to deal with them (something you Utes have a hard time doing).
Magazines? | 12:17 p.m. July 2, 2008
I love how you Ute fans are all of the sudden holding tight to this magazine. And then you claim that this is the most accurate magazine in the country. Phil Steele is claimed to be ONE of the most accurate, but there are three others that are known as some of the most accurate. Athlon Magazine - has BYU #14, Utah #28. Lindy's Magazine (never heard of it, but then again I've never heard of Phil Steele either) - BYU #12, Utah NR. And Sporting News Magazine - BYU #16, Utah NR. You can even look at any of the other preseason polls that are out there including ESPN (BYU #13, Utah NR), Scout.com (BYU #22, Utah #28), etc.

But hey, just because these magazines predict BYU ahead of Utah, doesn't mean it will actually happen. We will just have to see. I just wanted the Ute fans to stop carrying around the Phil Steele magazine like it's their flippin scriptures.

Concast-hater | 1:18 p.m. July 2, 2008
I love the trash talking going on. We're all just excited to watch some college football. It's only 2 months away now.

I want to request the Ute fans not to predict BYU losing every week. I completely understand when BYU was about to play a good team, but several people predicted loses against UNLV, Colorado state, and Eastern Washington.
Don't be dumb | 3:12 p.m. July 2, 2008
As a BYU student I just want to tell whoever posted the comment about Max Hall's injury being as bad as Brain Johnson's I hope you aren't going to BYU because that is the dumbest comment on this entire board.
Anonymous | 3:41 p.m. July 2, 2008
Hall's injury wasn't near as bad as Johnsons, but given that Johnson had been recovering for 3 months and Hall had sustained his injury in the week previous.

Hall didn't have a worse injury but given that he wasn't very far down his recovery process, it made his injury worse than Johnsons.

It's a lot easier to get your throw down if it takes you 3 weeks to recover and you have been getting used to it for 9 weeks. Hall was just barely coming off the injury.

But, it doesn't really matter, you have to play with the hand that you are dealt, (just like Johnson says in the article) and you can't cry about whether or not your team had more injuries or whatever. The only thing that matters is if you win or lose.
re: Chester Blue | 5:51 p.m. July 2, 2008
"I made a typing error but I knew we were playing the Huskies..."

Nope. "WSU" is NOT a typing error. You clearly didn't know who your opponent was.

"I would smoke you in a game of knowledge...about college football..."

Nope. You didn't even know who was on YOUR schedule. I had to point it out to you.

"To the guy who should've been in bed at 5:49 am..."

I was just about to leave for work...at 7:49 am. I live in Philadelphia. Why do TDS fans seem to think everybody lives in the MST?
Hard Sell | 10:14 p.m. July 2, 2008
Ute fans can bark all they want, but for us BYU fans who have been around the past forty years, this rivalry is tedious, and all your smack talk really is a waste of time.

Maybe Lavell should have retired 5 years earlier, and then there would be no question, but hands down, BYU has been "the" premeir program in whatever conference they are in. (amd they keep dragging Utah along, like a little brother, because Utah is really not viable on their own two feet.

If BYU bolted the MWC, the MWC would cease to exist, and BYU would adjust, and be the premier team wherever they went. If Utah left, They would be missed about as much as a Weber State, or Utah State University.

Face it, without BYU, I question whether or not the UofU would even be Division I at this time.

soooo...

Hey, you're welcome.
RE- Hard Sell | 12:11 a.m. July 3, 2008
Even though byu has been on top of both WAC and Mountain West, they still have not come close putting together a team like UTAH did in 2004. Any team in the history of byu would not even come close to the 04 UTES.

You are right. I am sick of talking about the over hyped team down south and would like to talk about a real game on August 30 against Michigan.
Re:Re: Hard sell | 11:43 a.m. July 3, 2008
I bet the 1983, 1984, and 1996 BYU teams would have smoked the 2004 Utes.
re:Hard Sell | 12:22 p.m. July 3, 2008
The Ute fans wouldn't have the hate that fuels their regards for the U of U.

I have been to many Utah/BYU games, and the anti-religous fervor from the Ute Fans makes that obvious. I know many are Utah grads, and respect that.

But without the LDS/BYU hatred that stadim would be half full minus the 2/3rds of the fans that go their to beg and pray for someone LDS might fail, and give meaning to their anti Mormon insecurities.

Why else all of the anger to Austin Collie. More religious statements are made by boxers, tennis players, and other professional athletes.

Without the BYU/LDS connection, Utah would have no better program than any other team in the state of Utah.

Go Utes. I hope you do well. Just don't count on it. The anger doesn't make your team any better, or "classier".
Las Vegas | 7:14 a.m. July 5, 2008
Word on the street is; Washington is ready for the Cougars and Michigan is ready for Utes. Please do no under estimate these games. Remember one loss and you are out of the BCS run. Go Utes and Cougars!
What? | 9:29 a.m. July 12, 2008
Some of you are nuts! I'm pulling for an undefeated Utah team to play a winless tds team come November!

Go Utes!
