Officer Burns needs some education about starter fluids. They are aerosols that dissapate very fast and do not remain in the engine once it is started. Spilled starting fluids evaporate quickly and not a hazard after a few minutes. However, if a can of starter fluid was stored in the watercraft near the engine or exhaust it could very well overheat and explode. This seems more likely than having used it earlier to start the engine. A poorly tuned engine is the only reason for the need to use starting fluid and in most engines it is recommended not to use. The parents and children were lucky this time and there is nothing like maintenance and engine tune-ups as needed.
