And why is he doing this on a road instead of the salt flats?

Because he can. It's FAR more challenging to do this on a narrow highway than on the Salt Flats or a dry lake bed, which allow for virtually unlimited lateral correction of mistakes. Doing this on a 33 foot wide highway with crosswinds blowing is akin to you riding your bicycle down the narrow side of a two by four at full speed. Try it, sometime and let me know how you do.
