Thanks Chris | 12:37 a.m. June 25, 2008
Thanks Chris for all your you've done for the 3rd district. Can't wait to see when the media releases why Jason Chaffetz was fired from his last three jobs.

Welcome to the public eye Jason. May you be scrutinized as negatively as you scrutinized Chris Cannon

Hey Joe--your bro needs a job delivering papers ASAP!

Congratulations to Jason Chaffetz!

He was outspent. He ran his campaign with volunteers. He was very definite on the issues and struck resonant chords with the voters.

He was not endorsed by many of the prominent Republicans as was his opponent, but perhaps that is part of the reason that he won. People are not very happy with how things have been going and some of the things that are leaders have done.

The people have voted against the big-wigs of the parties and chosen a candidate more conservative or at least different than the incumbent.

Many people are still Republicans but fed up with the deficit spending, the power grabs by the President and the Department of Education.

People want to run their own schools and they want our government to live within its budget. They want less government and restoration of personal liberties.

They want change. And that is what they voted for.

Not many voted, but isn't that because there was almost nothing to vote for? Most of the contests were settled in the convention with its superdelegates and replacement and discretionary delegates and ballot boxes without poll watchers in attendance. We can do better. We should.

Cannon is the victim of a do nothing Congress. Others will follow
ABC Guy | 1:05 a.m. June 25, 2008
Cannon, after all his condescension, got his comeuppance. He completely ignored the will of his constituency, and then called them 'unsophisticated' for even considering throwing him out of office. Well, this unsophisticated rube is happy to have him gone!
Anonymous | 1:08 a.m. June 25, 2008
*** "But being released is not all a bad thing." ***

You were not "released," Congressman. This isn't a church calling. You were kicked out because you didn't serve your constituents; you betrayed them, actually. In your preferred terms, you failed to "magnify your calling."

Make no mistake: Cannon's defeat had ZERO NADA ZILCH to do with "low turnout." Jason Chaffetz won by over 9,000 votes. 58,000 people voted in the 2006 primary; 44,000 people voted in this year's primary (the rest couldn't afford the gas). If 14,000 more people had gone to the polls, raising turnout to the 2006 turnout level, 82% of them would've had to vote for Cannon for him to have won. Not likely.

*** "Chaffetz supporters [gathered] just down University Avenue and I-15 at the Camelot Village Clubhouse behind the Springville Wal-Mart." ***

Salt of the earth. My kind of people. I'm guessing that Arianna Huffington and the Duchess of Windsor didn't show for the party? I hope they never do...
Wow | 1:11 a.m. June 25, 2008
If Republican incumbents are not safe in Utah County, then they are not safe anywhere in the country. This primary, in my opinion, is very bad news for the Republican party, both because of low turnout compared to Democrats and because Hatch and Bennet have been repudiated by the result.

Obama might be able to give McCain a run for his money here, unless McCain chooses Romney, which I think is unlikely. If Obama does decently in Utah, he will win the rest of the country in a landslide.

*** "Utah will have a freshman lawmaker replacing Cannon and all the seniority he's accrued over six terms." ***

Chris Cannon's experience is irrelevant to Utah and actually damaging to the GOP. Leaders like him, Hatch, Bennett, Bush and McCain have betrayed the Republican brand. They have replaced Reagan's Coca Cola Classic with New Coke without the honesty of admitting it.

They have scared off the Reagan Democrats who helped the GOP win for years. The promise of Reagan's Republican Party was that if you were honest, worked hard, and made good choices in life that you'd be able to feed your family and maybe have a little extra on the side for some fun. The promise of today's GOP is to hammer the working class, devalue their labor through mass immigration, and give the spoils to the rich.

We are better off without the "experience" of Cannon and his ilk.
Tab L. Uno | 1:20 a.m. June 25, 2008
Mr. said and I quote, "If I don't win I'll do exactly the same thing I did before and essentially what I'm doing now. I'll go out and make money, which I can't really do now, and continue to develop tools to help Republicans go out and win." I wonder if that is all political servants think about is making money. What ever happened to volunteer work and helping people with housing, food, and other employment issues? I recall President Carter focussed on Habitat on Humanity (housing issues). Sometimes what a person does outside of politics might reflect what one will focus on inside of politics perhaps? Make money? And for whom? Whatever happened to serving the people?
disgruntled Republican | 1:21 a.m. June 25, 2008
A number of Republicans, me included, stayed home yesterday because neither candidate is the compassionate conservative we're looking for. Yes to fiscal responsibility. Yes to protecting the unborn. Yes to individual liberties. But also, yes to helping the poor, the sick, the disadvantaged. A Darwinian health-care plan, a draconian immigration plan, no plan for saving the lives of millions in the Third World... I'll see what the Democratic candidate has to offer. I'm not alone.

Hard-core conservatism is a false economy. Compassionate conservatism is actually better for our economy, our liberty, and our soul.
Justin | 1:22 a.m. June 25, 2008
Chris Cannon is soooooooo incredibly arrogant, and I believe that's one of the main reasons why he lost this election. The people of Utah are sick of being "represented" by a man who acts like he is so much more enlightened then the rest of us nobodys. His dishonestly regarding his pro-amnesty positions could also no longer be tolerated by his constituency.

Oh, and to the "Thanks Chris" writer... I'm glad to see you know so much about Jason Chaffetz who, by the way, was NOT fired from his last three jobs.
What a shame | 1:23 a.m. June 25, 2008
that we replaced an incumbant who's done a less than mediocre job with the mediocre "wanna-be" Jason Chaffetz who has no plan, whose goal was simply to oust the incumbant. Wow-congrats!! If the dems didn't look so lame, I'd vote for them.

The bigger shame is that truly qualified candidates are not willing to undergo the mean, cruel, lame and often downright untruthful mudslinging that goes on in politics today (i.e., as with Mitt Romney) to win victory and use their valuable experience in leadership, their worthy personal record as an example and strong moral code to represent our interests. Chris won with big bucks -and what for? Just to win. Jason, you won because of a disgruntled public, not because you are qualified. Are you really so different?

We will know the truth if you really do step up and do the job - listen to the people, know what you are talking about, make a plan and mean it for the right reasons. Be a real public servant where you serve without grasping for fame.

I wouldn't be too proud, Mr. C. You could be ousted on the next round...we are already watching you.
Cynthia | 1:30 a.m. June 25, 2008
Congratulations to Chaffetz and his volunteer staff. You have pulled off a feat that everyone thought impossible. 98% of incumbents get re-elected each season no matter what kind of job they've done. Not this time.

May the success of this race have influence on others and help us oust more incumbents bent on doing the same thing in the same way while never solving the real problems. We need more 'out of the box' thinkers in congress- be they Republican OR Democrat. I hope what has been started here can be replicated elsewhere and just maybe the people will be represented again in congress.
Anonymous | 1:32 a.m. June 25, 2008
*** "Thanks Chris for all your you've done for the 3rd district. Can't wait to see when the media releases why Jason Chaffetz was fired from his last three jobs." ***

Ah, yes - that old allegation. That would include the alleged firing from the Nu Skin job, which is why 2 Nu Skin executives, including Blake Roney himself, supported Chaffetz's campaign.
RE: ABC Guy | 1:37 a.m. June 25, 2008
You know, Cannon wasn't all wrong to say you were unsophisticated. You obviously don't understand how things work in our nation's capitol. Cannon is known and has power. Jason has NOTHING!!!

Electing a freshman republican in a democrat stronghold is like eliminating a republican vote altogether. We have lost a lot of ground tonight, Mr. ABC Guy. And for what? Jason Chaffetz? Good job Jennifer - NOT! We really needed that seniority for the next few years.

I think a warning shot across the bough would have been appropriate, but replacing a committee incumbant with a freshman lameduck under our current circumstances in the house, that is the true show of being "unsophisticated".

Did that ever occur to any of you voters? I bet not. Chris didn't sell us down the river...he just didn't take a strong enough stand. Okay, granted, he needed to improve, but the cost of this election goes beyond being simply unhappy with mediocrity.

Now we have Jason who has previously been pro-democrat, who has flip flopped across the isle...well, the dems ought to love you. This vote is a huge disappointment and a show of how backwards and unsophisticated Utahans can be.

*** "A Darwinian health-care plan, a draconian immigration plan, no plan for saving the lives of millions in the Third World... I'll see what the Democratic candidate has to offer. I'm not alone." ***

Which Third World lives would be in need of saving - the ones from Mexico, average life expectancy 75.6 years (vs. USA's 78 years)?

In my lifetime - a brief span from the late 70s unto today - we've seen the rapid transformation in the fortunes of countries with 3 billion people: countries as small as Singapore and as large as China, with India, South Korea, Taiwan, and several nations of Eastern Europe in between. We improved these people's lives where they live, not by relocating them to the USA.
Jim Sumpter | 1:43 a.m. June 25, 2008
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Chaffetz while filling in for Jack Stockwell on K-TALK Radio (I host a nationally syndicated show from Salt Lake City, not yet carried locally although we're in almost 50 cities across the country).

I found Mr. Chaffetz to be on target, with one exception: illegal immigration. He proposed new laws to address the problem.

New laws aren't needed; enforcement of existing laws is.

I hope Mr. Chaffetz is the constitutionalist he appears to be and does not get 'maneuevered' by the elite in DC. We don't elect leaders - we elect representatives. We are not a Democracy, we are a constitutionally-based, representative republic and there's a huge difference.

The 'people's will' is for a real border barrier. The triple-tiered fence between San Diego and Tijuana has been tremendously effective. Get the fence built rather than laws passed. The country will be better off and safer for it.

We have plenty of laws, but few committed to solutions. Despite what politicians say, our problems aren't complex and solutions are both plentiful and simply executed. All we need are committed patriots.

Congratulations, Mr. Chaffetz. You'll be in my prayers.
Mike Thompson | 1:47 a.m. June 25, 2008
If you would just go and see Jason Chaffetz and listen to him, look into his eyes and really listen with your head and your heart, you would see a man who is sincere, a man who cares, a man who is committed to what he believes in, a man who you can see clearly knows where he is, what he is talking about, and what his foundations are. You can feel this man. He is good for us and good for this nation. Be honest and fair and give him a chance, instead of just being bitter over the mistakes of others. I am very happy to have voted for him today and happy that I can honestly vote for a true Republican Congressman this November.

THe TRuth: | 5:02 a.m. June 25, 2008
No-one mentions the multiple hits Cannon took from Mormons4Justice. I believe that is what led too his demise:

1. The main "hit" was when Utah County was notified of
Cannon's "sellout" to Farmers Insurance Group in the Paul Drockton discrimination complaint. Why this hasn't been reported is no mystery. Joe Cannon controlled what made it to the papers.

This is what happens to people that choose money and power. God sends a humble servant for them to abuse. Looks like the Cannons underestimated the power of the internet and the telephone.

THanks to Mormons4Justice they won't be able to in the future.
re:what a shame | 5:27 a.m. June 25, 2008
What makes a person "qualified" to run for office?

Your comments smack of condescension and a complete lack of understanding.

There was no "downright untruthful mudslinging" in this campaign. Unless it was from the incumbent. Cannon's platform was a whining "Jason doesn't live in the district." Chaffetz' platform was all voting record, issues, charisma, and energy.

The better candidate won. I think we know who is better qualified to serve the 3rd district this term. Seniority doesn't matter one ounce if the rep doesn't do the right thing.

Congratulations Jason! May you always keep an ear to the ground and not let your supporters feel betrayed. The sun is rising on Happy Valley today.
To: disgruntled Republican | 5:32 a.m. June 25, 2008
I completely agree with you. I'm not Republican, I'm an independent, but I do tend to lean more toward the conservative side on a lot of things.

But what you described was exactly the party I would support for the rest of my life. Unfortunately at the moment, neither party comes close.
That's good. | 5:34 a.m. June 25, 2008
Cannon can no longer embarrass Utah. However, Cannon is replaced by a far right-wing authoritarian as the Republican candidate, and that's NOT good. It's time to say "no thanks" to Chaffetz.
Bye, bye. | 5:41 a.m. June 25, 2008
Bye, bye Mr. Cannon. I'll bet you're listening to the voters now. This is what needs to happen to everyone elected to Washington. Replace them and send them home. Too bad it can't be with NO pension. We need patriots in Washington and we have none. I'm afraid because of people like Cannon it may be too late to salvage what we have. Next we get to decide between Obama and McBush. Oh no! Is this the best our country can produce? We're in deep trouble.
Congratulations | 5:44 a.m. June 25, 2008
Now keep up the good work and get rid of the remaining incumbents. These jokers should have been shipped 12 years ago. Watch Chaffetz closely if in fact he is our representative, and if he doesn't measure up out he goes in 4 years. These jerks all around our nation that take an election for granted need to be replaced. NOW is a good time for wholesale house cleaning. ALL INCUMBENTS MUST GO. Lets turn this train around and get back to good U.S. policy, like what made this country the greatest in the world. These GREEDY crooks we have been electing everywhere in our country in the past need to be turned out to pasture. Make sure you vote PLEASE.
Max | 5:54 a.m. June 25, 2008
The time is ripe for Bennion Spencer. I just can't believe that Chaffetz can win the general election -- especially when the dirt on his NuScam activities come to light. The man is either stupid or a crook. Either one SHOULD disqualify him.
levotb | 5:59 a.m. June 25, 2008
One of the biggest enemies of the anti-Invasion movement is kaput. Jason Chaffetz saw to that last night! I think I can speak for 99.9% of anti-Invasion folks that Chris Cannon was a pompous, arrogant Bushie RINO who was anything BUT a true conservative. Apparently, his idiotic pro-polygamy comment a few months back hurt him, but what REALLY hurt him were Bush's coat tails and his illegal immigration stance. Cannon's cozying up to racist separatist/reconquista groups like La Raza, MALDEF and others is what really hurt him. Long ago, he turned his back on the people he represented.

There is a list of other RINOs, reconquistas and traitors who must also be voted out of office. This list starts with the following:

McCain
Obama
Ted Kennedy
Gov. Kaine (VA)
Gov. Corzine (NJ)
Mayor Tony Villar (Los Angeles, his real name, a former gang member)
Mayor Gavin Newsome (San Francisco)
Mayor Phil Gordon (Phoenix)
Rep. Flake (AZ)
Lindsey Graham (SC)
Gov. Napolitano (AZ)
Sen. Menendez (NJ)
Sen. Martinez (FL)
...and just about all Democrat Congressmen save for the Blue Dogs!

PT Barnum comes into play here. How many of you have worked with Chaffetz behind the scenes outside of this campaign? And how many people who have worked with Chaffetz outside of this campaign have endorsed him? Answer, almost zero.

You got exactly what you wanted: A populist who will say anything to get elected. On one hand he wants tents for 20 million illegals during convention. Now he wants guest worker visas for the same 20 million for the primary. He is a con man but hey, he's your con man.

WE ARE SICK OF IT...
Chuckles55 | 6:47 a.m. June 25, 2008
In Utah County, the land of the sheep, anyone with the moniker of "Republican" seems to always trump a Democrat, sorry to say. The Geneva moneypot put Chris Cannon in office and then propped him up even when he did little for his home state. He has been a do-nothing who has been "released" to come back home and make money because of family ties and connections. I only wish that the Democrats could have a real chance in the Third District. Maybe Obama will change that in November...
meangrouch | 6:49 a.m. June 25, 2008
Cannon tried to support illegal immigration, and then claimed he was
opposed to it. If finally caught up with him. His defeat is no loss.

You didn't vote and you're bragging about it? Weak.
Cats | 6:52 a.m. June 25, 2008
As a committed Republican and a former Cannon staffer I can tell you that Chris' departure was long overdue. He has never done a good job for Utah from the start. He has an attention span about five minutes long and, if his staff doesn't keep him scheduled in every minute, he sits around and plays computer games. On top of that, he has left a lot of wreckage in his wake. As ya'll may have witnessed, he isn't above telling a few whoppers when it fits his purposes. He has an amazing ability to compartmentalize and rationalize the things he does and I'm sure he has fully convinced himself that he hasn't done anything wrong. As someone who has spent a long time in Washington, I care what people think about us back there. Chris really has been an embarrassment to us for a long time.

Let's all give Jason our complete support. He will need it as he deals with a far-left Democrat Congress and all the serious problems facing our nation. I'm afraid the "throw-the-bums-out" mentallity will cause voters to make a serious mistake in the direction we go this year. Let's all pray!

Some sore winners and losers on this site and some pathetic folks who think "staying home" is a position.

VOTE. You have no place to gripe if you don't VOTE.

Three cheers for voter imposed term limits.

I don't know Chaffetz personally and have no emotional stake in him, but, congratulations to him and now let's get him elected, hold his feet to the fire by insisting he refuse to compromise with the liberals and left who are hell-bent on destroying our freedoms and replacing them with their commissar ways where they know how better to spend my money than I do.
arc | 7:04 a.m. June 25, 2008
Jason meets all the legal and Constitutional requirements to be on the ballot. The Founders specifically excluded a district residency requirement because of concerns about gerrymandering.

Jason lives in Alpine, which is 11,000 feet from the district boundary. He has lived in Utah County for 20 years.

Gerrymandering in 2001 removed 4 Utah County cities from the Third District and combined them with the less conservative communities of the Second District.

The legislature has officially approved only one map for a Fourth District at this time. It puts Alpine back in the Third District.

Perhaps this will work..

Thank You Chris Cannon for all of your hard work. We are still counting on you for the next 6 months.

(No, I didn't vote for you).

I voted for Chaffetz yesterday, but for the first time in our marriage of 25 years, my husband did not vote, because he said there was not much difference in either candidate.

I retain my cynicism about politicians. I want a change in the President, and I also want congress to WORK for a change--not only to work together, but also to put in the days at the office that they should be doing.

Hopefully Chaffetz can hold onto his idealism if he wins the election and be a productive representative of this state.

The Democrats offer more gun control, higher taxes and disarming America's national defense. Be careful what you ask for, you might get it.

This was a "none of the above" election, IMO.

I can't wait for Jason to go back to Washington and "change the world" and "stick it to the man." Too bad he doesn't know what he's talking about and that he doesn't realize that jr. Rep's don't get a whole lot done. But then again, as the lowest ranking member of several lackluster congressional committees, maybe he can make a difference. ;)

Anyone that thinks he's going to go back and change the system or be a powerful (and, more importantly, EFFECTIVE) advocate for his district is naive, unrealistic, and out of touch with the realities of politics and law making. I guess that describes most individuals in the general public.

Unfortunately, the person who writes that we have lost a lot of seniority by electing Jason has fallen victim to Cannon's campaign rhetoric. In the U.S. House of Represenatives, seniority only matters if your party is in the majority. As a minority member, Cannon's seniority doesn't mean a thing. NOT ONE THING. Sad, but true. It will only matter if the Republicans can take the majority again. I hope that happens soon, but based on the current political trends, it probably won't.
Seniority? | 7:31 a.m. June 25, 2008
To those who lament having lost a congressman with seniority, let us not forget that after the 1994 elections a gaggle of freshmen Republicans went to work in congress and actually balanced the budget! Though Clinton likes to take credit for it these days, we remember how he fought them tooth and nail. Don't underestimate the power of new blood.

Jason's own words | 7:35 a.m. June 25, 2008
in an email to me complemented Cannon as a man who got things done in Washington and described himself as a man who makes good speeches. Looks like Utah got symbolism over substance in this election.

One thing to remember - it's easier to remove a good democrat from the third Congressional seat than a bad republican.

I'll be voting democrat this November!
Jason | 7:39 a.m. June 25, 2008
Now lets get rid of Hatch, Bennett, Bishop and Matheson, as well as every other incumbent in the United States Congress. What a great day! I hope it is just the beginning. Throw them all out! They are all so useless!
