In time Chaffetz will be fired as a Congressman. Just as he was from Nuskin and the Governors office.
Chris | 9:54 p.m. June 24, 2008
Glad to see James is already drinking the bitter cool-aid. The voters have spoken.

Jason for Congress! Here's hoping when they reorganize the districts when we add a rep. in 2010 they will move Chaffetz current home (and mine) back into the alignment it was before the Republicans did their swindling.

I'm so glad you posted. Your post shows the same deft desire for facts and truth that has completely dominated the election. First of all, census takes place in 2010, reorganization takes place in 2011 and the new districts will be seated in 2012. Such minor details that, again, have been the hallmark of your campaign.

And the voters have spoken. All 3% of them. What this means is that the right wing of the part, the racists and xenophobes have risen to the challenge and given us a great con man.

In a short time his voting record will be right up there with Mathesons and other blue-dog Democrats. Good for you. You just elected a Democrat in the Republican party on a populist message.

Not for Jason... | 10:17 p.m. June 24, 2008
I fully expect Chaffetz to be out of a job in two years. I hope someone else steps up and moves Jason "The new Cook" out of a job. But for now, Cannon is gone, and the people rejoice!
Life Long Republican | 10:21 p.m. June 24, 2008
Heck dude, the blue dogs may be the only ones in congress trying to do anything. The Republicans sat on their keisters for years and now the dems' just sit on their heads (cuz' its close to their keisters. Chris Cannon has DONE NOTHING. The only time he steps up is when he has too. He just sits back the rest of the time.

Looks like he can take a long break now.

Enjoy your two years Jason. Its all you'll get.
The trees... | 10:22 p.m. June 24, 2008
wave a gleeful farewell to Cannon. He was someone who hated the environment and made robber barons blush. Could Chaffetz be worse?
GOP guy | 10:31 p.m. June 24, 2008
Wow. Bitter aren't we? Life will go on. Take a deep breadth. Have a good night's sleep.

Good luck to Congressman Chaffetz.
re: James 10:07 | 10:41 p.m. June 24, 2008
Minute details won this race? Maybe that is why your man lost. His strategy was, "Why Chaffetz? He's just the same as me, But I have more experience."

Cannon has done NOTHING in congress for his entire 12 years.

Cannon tried to paint the difference between the men as minute, but they were far from that. One holds true to conservative ideals, he is courteous, appreciative and has a hunger to restore America. The other is a neo-con, panders to the section of the party that has destroyed America and destroyed Republicans faith in it's own party, is rude, arrogant and does not listen to the people he represents. But that just scratches the surface.

Anyways, whether you appreciate it or not, you have the best man representing this state.
GOP wipeout | 10:42 p.m. June 24, 2008
A few days ago, I wrote in response to a DesNews article, that if Chaffetz unseated Cannon it would be a disturbing sigh for the Republicans in Utah and nationwide.

Chaffetz's upset confirms that 2008 will be a change election even in Utah. I've never voted Dem, am active, etc., but I will not miss the historic opportunity to vote for Obama and change. Preliminary results in the 3rd suggest that my neighbors also want change. I hope Obama heeds our little corner and invests in Utah: I think the state is competitive this year.
Madden | 10:42 p.m. June 24, 2008
Wow, bitter comments coming in already. I'm hopeful this turns out for Jason and we "un-elect" the incumbent tonight (and I hope the same thing happens in many other elections here and nationwide in the coming months and years). All things come to an end - Chris Cannon isn't the worst Congressman, but he isn't ideal either. On too many big issues he simply did not represent Utah well. He had his chance and walked lock-step with the party (i.e. Pres. Bush's administration), and he and the current GOP leaders will continue to get what they earned.

*** "I've never voted Dem, am active, etc., but I will not miss the historic opportunity to vote for Obama and change." *** - GOP wipeout

Wipeout - if you support Obama then you ARE NOT any sort of conservative, or even a Republican. Period. There is nothing the least bit conservative about Barack Obama, except that he will "conserve" this nation's current slide into oblivion.

*** "Preliminary results in the 3rd suggest that my neighbors also want change." ***

Yes, they want CONSERVATIVE change. Not Obama.

*** "I hope Obama heeds our little corner and invests in Utah: I think the state is competitive this year." ***

Only if McCain picks Huckashyster as his running mate. If you think Utah is competitive in the presidential race then your comments can be safely ignored, because it shows how far outside the realm of reality you are.
alright.. | 11:14 p.m. June 24, 2008
Congratulations Richard Ellis. I can still say that I am republican. Thanks to the voters who saw thru Walkers attempt to bribe his way into a job.
Anonymous | 11:18 p.m. June 24, 2008
93.4% of precincts in and Chaffetz is still ahead 60-40 - or by almost 8,000 votes.

The Cannon campaign would have to stuff a lot of ballot boxes...

Or perhaps that last remaining precinct in Millard County has 8,000 voters who all went for Cannon.

God bless Congressman-elect Chaffetz!! Cannon is finished and the anti-Invasion movement is forever strengthened! Viva la migra!
Constitution Over "Conservative" | 12:06 a.m. June 25, 2008
What is "conservative" about GWB, Cannon and the rest of the neocons. I support the Constitution. What has George Bush done to support the Constitution?

The term "conservative" has no meaning anymore. Just waste of time factionalism.

I don't know how Chaffetz will be but we know what Cannon was. Good riddance!

Congrats Jason and Ellis.

Response (GOP wipeout) | 1:22 a.m. June 25, 2008
With all due respect, you do not know if I am conservative or not. I think I am and LDS conservative, and my teenage kids certainly think I am an arch-conservative.

I will probably (not certainly) vote for Obama because I think we need change of parties in Washington. I'd like to see every Bush appointee resign, and that will only happen if Obama wins. I'd like to see some sort of health plan, like the Romney plan in Massachusetts, and I don't think McCain can deliver on that. I've had enough of American GIs dying in the trillion dollar war in Iraq.

So, I am conservative politically, have never voted Democrat, and generally a regular Utah guy. If I am seriously considering Obama, I imagine other brethren are as well. That is why I think Utah might be competitive this year.
Conservative | 1:41 a.m. June 25, 2008
It's time for the Republican party to cleanse themselves of the Neocons and CFR liberals and allow conservatism to take root again. It's probably too late for this election cycle, but after McCain loses to Obama they need to re-group and figure out how to restore the faith of their traditional base, or disband and allow a new party to rise up.

I for one and sick of people within my own party accusing me of being right-wing and racist for expressing traditional Republican viewpoints. Whether it is the President (Bush), current candidate (McCain), or recently ousted Congressman Cannon, it's getting old.
Change What? | 1:57 a.m. June 25, 2008
Okay so everyone wants change, but are you ready for a permanent social solution to our healthcare woes? Are you ready for taxes to go up and up and up, for no reduction in gas prices and inflated interest rates - another Jimmy Carter? Are you ready to embrace a plan you know nothing about..Obama's plan?

That's what you'll get with Obama. A change in party is not a change any true conservative would vote for, so don't say you are a conservative if you are willing to vote for Obama.

The war is going to end. Look at the real improvements in Iraq over the past year..there are many. The stupid part of this war was Rumsfield and George Bush's incapability to lead Rumsfield. There has been a significant change already and it will continue.

Don't punish America with expensive social programs that will go far beyond the cost of the Iraq war because you are frustrated with our current republican team...and don't forget, the dems voted for the war, too.

Vote McCain - vote to keep our republic. Vote conservative. Vote to change the Cali constitution to ban same sex marriage. Vote republican.

Congratulations to Jason Chaffetz! An "outsider" with little money but many hard-working volunteers and a talent for speaking and expressing the ideas and yearnings of many citizens in the Utah 3rd Congressional District.

I believe that Jason Chaffetz represents the public's dissatisfaction with the national Republican party led by President Bush who has brought us huge deficit spending, loss of personal liberties, more power to the president, and a needless war, etc.

His winning may also express some discontent with the local Republican party in Utah County with its "shenanigans" including superdelegates, replacement delegates and discretionary delegates and ballot box antics, all of which make sure that there is very little to vote for in a primary election.

We had a "low turnout" does not necessarily mean apathy. In many areas there was only one race on the ballot -- the Treasurer's race which was confusing at best. People do vote when there is something to vote for, but our Republican party bosses have tried to eliminate all primary battles and thus disenfranchise the public. Those same party bosses almost all supported Cannon, and he lost! The independence of the American voter is not yet lost. They voted! Freedom speaks!
Non-conservative | 5:41 a.m. June 25, 2008
If conservative means invading nations, building an empire, killing millions of innocent civilians, dissolving our borders, spying on Americans, inflation spending, no savings, no money, no time, then NO I AM NOT A CONSERVATIVE!

Welcome to politics, Jason Chaffetz. I do hope you can step up to the plate and hit one out of the park for the grass roots people who helped you get elected. We're counting on you.
yorktown | 5:42 a.m. June 25, 2008
Did you see how much money Jason Chaffetz DIDN'T spend in the election? Holy Pesos, Man! That guy could actually save our money from being stolen from the government if he can manage to have any influence on Capitol Hill. He has an instant friend in Ron Paul. I hope they become the dynamic duo for fiscal responsibility in DC.

TO Response (GOP WIPEOUT)
You may think you are conservative, but it is in name alone if those are the values you are holding to.

Obama has been openly pro-abortion. What is conservative about infanticide?

Obama wants to have a discussion with known Terrorist State leaders. What is conservative about bowing to one's enemies?

Obama wants a socialized Health Care. Visit our Northern Neighbors and try to get heart surgery, then come explain what socialized medicine will do to benefit the United States.

Obama will appoint judges that are activist judges, who throw aside the constitution for a word. Where is the conservative in that?

Obama wants to end the war. I don't want the war to end "over there" until it has reached the secure point that it will not be restarted "over here". If you think that those causing damage there now would not be strengthened in their cause by an American withdrawl and feel that the withdrawl shows our weakness, you will be sorely surprised.

Obama's "CHANGE" is nothing more than a sly campaign tactic. He is nothing short of a disaster for our country.
Obama a disaster? | 10:58 p.m. June 26, 2008
After trying to weather two terms led by Bush, I am keenly aware of the difference a president can make. Anyone who thinks Obama will be a "disaster" and McCain will set things right is living in "another dimension" from the reality I am experiencing.
