Real (pun intended) smart to put a stadium in the suburbs where people have to drive. Had it been downtown (had the legislature not had a personal vendetta against the city), then people would have commuted by rail, like the Jazz games. The stadium should be cool, but this plan is not at all with the new urbanism trend that society is shifting towards.

So, which argument are we going to hear today?

RSL has terrible attendance because nobody cares about soccer and will fold in 5 years...

or

RSL has way too many fans, is going to overwhelm Sandy, Jordan Commons, the Expo Center and park on every residential road for miles...

Can you really argue against RSL both ways?

Hope the fans will be "honest enough," what Larry? like Jazz fans? People going to events at the Expo center have been using the Commons' parking for years without two newspaper articles a day about it. Gotta love Larry's (and a lot of others') "fight til the death against soccer" attitude.
Jordan Commons | 8:33 a.m. June 20, 2008
I would definitely go get something to eat at Jordan Commons then go catch a game. I hope I don't destroy Jordan Commons by doing that!

Ok, actually I don't care about Jordan Commons at all.

Go Real!

RSL could work out a deal with the UTA so that people who have RSL tickets could ride Trax or maybe even buses or the Front Runner for free.

But I don't think that anyone at the UTA or with RSL is that smart.
Too little? | 8:45 a.m. June 20, 2008
Too little parking. So the argument would be RSL needs to build 100 mile wide parking lots that remain empty when there's no game. Damn you RSL for building ugly parking lots everywhere!

What you didn't build parking lots every where? Damn you RSL for not building enough parking lots everywhere!

The last time I was at RES I ended up walking 20 minutes to the stadium and there was huge traffic Jams when leaving. The new stadium is going to be better in every way and parking and traffic will be no worse than RES.

I do think it's funny Jordan Commons is worried about so many potential customers being drawn to their site. Maybe on RSL games days the can ban any cars from entering their parking lots. Because we all know in business the more customers you have the worse things are. Between the Expo Center and the RSL stadium they are bound to go out of business any day.

THE PROBLEM IS LARRY DOES NOT OWN THE TEAM, AS A RESULT HE IS GOING TO DO EVERYTHING HE CAN TO MAKE LIFE HELL FOR THE REAL ORGANIZATION. I GUESS REAL NEEDS TO ASK FOR A CUTT IN HIS PROFITS BECAUSE OF THE BUSINESS JORDAN COMMONS WILL RECEIVE BECAUSE OF THE REAL GAMES. WAKE UP LARRY, YOU CAN'T OWN ALL THE STATES ENTERTAIMENT VENUES
Guaglione | 9:03 a.m. June 20, 2008
It's not about the potential for added business at Jordan Commons, it's about all of the stalls being filled with non-customer cars for hours each game day, keeping patrons of Jordan Commons from being able to park.

I thought it was interesting, though, that UTA estimated there would be a need for 9,000 stalls, Real is planning 6,000, and they're sure that'll be enough. Are they really not planning to ever fill the stadium up?
Guaglione | 9:21 a.m. June 20, 2008
The ratio is usually three or four people per car spot (don't forget to average buses in).

I find the Jordon Commons concern interesting. I go there quite often on weekends for a movie and dinner. If you go to the North parking terrace, the two bottom aren't nearly full. I haven't once seen every parking stall filled when being there. Seems Larry Miller would want to partner with ReAL and fillup those stalls, especially on Wed night games when Jordan Commons isn't as busy. I would imagine that many would take advantage of the dining opportunities at Jordon Commons. Can you imagine a ReAL themed sports grill at Jordan Commons. What an opportunity.
2 hours | 9:55 a.m. June 20, 2008
Soccer games last less than 2 hours, always. Always. Do you get it? They are always done in less than 2 hours. So, what is the point? Geesh, its not like the cars will be there all week, only about 2 hours on saturday nights 7-9, and some wednesday and thursdays thrown in.
Kenny | 10:25 a.m. June 20, 2008
There goes my plan to eat at Jordan Commons before games. I was hoping to have dinner at The Mayan, have my colon cleansed, and park all at the same place.

Lets hear disparaging comments about the stadium! I want to hear it all before the stadium finally opens in October. Once the stadium opens then finally we could but this dumb argument to bed.
Nice idea | 10:44 a.m. June 20, 2008
football specials for the win,

Actually RSL's had that idea ever since the stadium site in Sandy was on the table. Specifically, their idea was that RSL season ticket holders would get a free all-day Trax pass on game days (well, obviously nothing is free - you'd pay for it when you buy season tickets, but you get my drift).

That would have the added bonus of giving you the rest of the day to ride Trax for free. I like this idea and hope it works out. But regardless, my family and I will ride Trax to the stadium every time - we will never take one of those precious parking spots.
Just glad.... | 11:05 a.m. June 20, 2008
....I won't have to drive up the hill to RES anymore....ugh...I hate all 47 lights that I get stopped at.

Sandy will be so awesome.
Next to RES | 11:20 a.m. June 20, 2008
I live right next to RES, so RSL has been really easy to get to. However, I can't wait to drive to Sandy to park in one of those stalls. I look forward to it because the stadium is going to be so much better than RES for our team.

You make it sound like traffic is not an issue in SLC but would be a huge issue in the extremely out of the way "suburb" or Sandy. Tracks goes right to the stadium in Sandy. Sandy is also already fairly urban and will become more so. Before too long, the Salt Lake Valley will have two urban hubs, Downtown and Southtown. They have already approved three 60 story office and residential buildings in this area to go along with the commercial development surrounding the stadium, the mall and the office districts west of the freeway. Sandy is not really a Suburb of SLC. It is becoming an urban center and I think that is definitely a good thing for everyone in the south end of the valley.

And I have to echo the comments of everyone above. Larry H is just being a cry baby because there is someone trying to invade on his monopoly of Utah entertainment. Of course this development will be good for Jordan Commons and Larry Miller from a business perspective. However, it will allow a competitor into the market and we all know how competition is bad for consumers. Oh, wait. It's not?
MY SLC | 12:28 p.m. June 20, 2008
Trust me, people ignore no parking signs everywhere. I live in downtown SLC. On conference weekend even though the city puts up residential parking only signs the streets above the conference center are packed. I even had my garbage cans set @ the curb (on the night before garbage day) picked up and put on the parking strip by the wife in the car no less while the husband parked the vehicle! When the car left she did not replace the cans to the street where they were. How could a city allow a big venue like the conference center or REAL to build without adequate parking or mass transit axis?
Steve - Re: SLC'er 12:49am | 12:59 p.m. June 20, 2008
I too would much rather have had the team be in downtown Salt Lake (the name of the team being Real SALT LAKE), but about your comment about building the stadium where people drive... people who live in Salt Lake drive the city streets, people are driving in and around downtown SLC all the time. TRAX is not how the majority of people get to downtown SLC.

I myself when going to a concert at Engery Solutions Arena, driving to work (I work in downtown SLC), or for any other SLC need... I drive. I don't take TRAX and I'm not alone in this.

So there's a little more traffic in Sandy's future... big deal. They and their Mayor who is so desperate to make Sandy the center of everything (also trying to steal SLC's Broadway theater) are bringing the extra traffic upon themselves. If the people so worried about traffic (a complaint that pops up over various big projects) then perhaps they should move to a small town in central Utah if they dislike it (traffic) so much.
Hey, Next to RES | 1:05 p.m. June 20, 2008
You could just take Trax down to 9400. It would probably be faster than walking to the stadium from your parking spot.

Maybe if enough of you go, they will run a direct University - Sandy train. Football specials!
My SLC, you should know | 1:07 p.m. June 20, 2008
If you have a Temple Recommend, you don't have to obey traffic laws.
RSL Punk | 1:35 p.m. June 20, 2008
Like many here, I'm looking forward to riding TRAX to the stadium. I'm a season ticket holder, and have been from the start. I'll also be transferring from the University line to the Sandy line, but I'd like to put my vote in for a University-Sandy train on game days. And anyone who thinks that putting the stadium right under Larry Miller's office building wasn't intentional doesn't understand the history between LHM and Checketts. Go Dave! Go RSL! (and Hup! Holland!)
MY SLC | 2:00 p.m. June 20, 2008
I never said that I was LDS and really did not imply that Mormons disobeyed the law. You can see it anywhere that crowds congregate. I understand the same thing occurs @ the U of U games.

it shows the progression of the stadium.
LOOKS AMAZING
It could happen | 11:42 p.m. June 20, 2008
I wonder if Dave Checketts will give state legislators courtside Jazz tickets in exchange for them passing legislation saying that RSL doesn't have to follow parking regulations?

Sounds more like something the Jazz would do.
Parking will be fine. | 11:39 a.m. June 23, 2008
The parking is not great at RES and people park in neighborhoods and on the street where they are not supposed to. This is the culture in the US with large events. Things will be fine in Sandy. I work right next to the stadium and there are plenty of places to park as well as the extremely close 9400 s. Trax stop which was put in once the stadium was announced. In fact the people I go to the game with plan on parking at the 9000 south trax stop parking lot, taking trax one stop south and walking to the game. People are smart and the parking will be fine.
