Can I be an assistant coach? I was a walk-on college player and was one of the stiffs who had to break down the opponent's game plan to prepare the A-listers for a game. That ought to qualify me to coach.

I think it is great to actually see an NBA team take a chance on someone new rather than hiring a retread that has coached 10 other NBA teams. I guess "The Rock" would rather see Doug Collins or Hubie Brown come out of the broadcast booth (again) and prove once again why they were in the broadcast booth to begin with. I have never been able to understand why teams continually hire coaches that failed at their last stop(s). Larry Brown will probably be receiving NBA job offers long after he leaves this world for the great Carolina in the sky.

There have been many first time head coaching job in the NBA. Many from Mass or the Celtics by the way:
Red Auerbach (1st with Washington Capitals before Celtics)
AL Cervi (Syracuse Nats)
Dolph Schayes)(Syracuse & Phila)--oops from NY
Al Attles
Bob Cousy
Bill Russell (Player coach*)
Danny Ainge (16 games as assistant*)
Bill Sharman
KC Jones
Larry Bird
Vinny Del Negro
(and many more..)
Maybe it's the New England water; but it seems to be a hotbed for BB coaches! Vinny does knows the difference in basketball; and he was one of the best scouts and evaluators in the NBA. If a Bull chooses not to put out--especially on "D", Vinny will know where to find his replacement.
