The company that prints and distributes the newspaper for both Salt Lake dailies also cut the amount of money a carrier can make per paper while the price of gas has soared. Of course carriers carry the entire burden for gas and maintenance to operate their vehicles. Now they find it extremely difficult to find people willing to get up at 3:30 am every morning of the week and deliver newspapers while covering all their own expenses. Duh!

I thought it was interesting to hear the change in mission of the Deseret News to be more "Mormon." It's not enough that we are divided into Republican/Democrat, Liberal/Conservative, Urban/Rural, or any other number of either/or groups, we now have to add an official voice to divide us into Mormon/Nonmormon. Even as an LDS Member, I think it's bad for the community, bad for Salt Lake City, and bad for Utah.

Dear Insterio - There's nothing wrong with a business trying to appeal to its customers.

It doesn't sound so bad...35 jobs. It sounds much worse when you say 35 of 200 jobs, or about 18%.

Does the "more mormon" mean they're only covering Mormon sports teams and athletes? Mormon businesses? Mormon trips? Are the forcing out Mormons from the newsroom. Aragon's overrated, anyway ...

I have a hard enough time getting comments depicting true but less than shining local behavior posted in this paper without getting "more Mormon"! Yet another lost reader for this bastion of purity!!!!

That is the reason for the cuts, the D-news has not focused on the needs of its readership. It has been acting like the SL Tribune for years. Negative views on business, Republicans, small government, & etc.

This can't be blamed on the fact that newspaper readership is down nationwide. Look at the Wall Street Journal. Circulation there is up year after year. Why? Because it listens to its readership and provides them the news they want/expect.

D-News should drop the liberal bias and watch the readership return.

I agree with Meh. When I moved to Utah 3 years ago I was excited to subscribe to the D News. I had read it regularly in the late 90's and was shocked to see how it had become like most newspapers around the country--lean to the left, emphasizing issues important to liberal causes, etc. I have stayed with the paper, but I hope it quits trying to be part of the "crowd" in the newspaper business. There are many conservatives in Utah who are not LDS who would love to read a newspaper that is balanced.
