I used to think the Deseret News at least tried to be unbiased and even-handed. If top management is taking it "more Mormon," there is no need for me to deal with this paper ever again.

I think there are two things that led to this happening. First off, the internet has greatly affected things. People don't want to read the newspaper and pay to have it delivered when they can get everything for free. The next generation (those in their 20s) grew up with all of this technology, and won't read the paper, either. In past generations, when we got a bit older, we decided that being informed in the world through the local paper was the responsible, adult thing to do. Now , the next generation doesn't care. You won't have papers when they're 40--everything is going to be online, for the most part.
I am sad that people are going to lose their jobs, but this is life. We're taught in college to get all the online/technological experience we can, because the print journalism field is dying. I don't think the DesNews is going to die or be any worse-- it just needs to allocate its resources towards New Media and the internet and make money that way.
I will still subscribe to the paper because I love the tangible feel of it, but the paper as we know it is dead.

"It seems strange that KSL radio, KSL television, and the D-news all have competing news web sites. It seems that the time has come to create something of a new entity that combines all three rather than having them duplicate services...

Such a "news entity" could also include other LDS groups associated with news gathering, including the universities. Training of students could lead them to jobs with major news gathering groups world wide.

The LDS Church groups are likely separate legal entities. However, the result, de facto, is that they are all intertwined.

Up to 35 of 200 DN employees could be laid off or 18%.

The Post last month stated tbat 100 of 785 newsroom employees would be available for "buy out" or 13%.

The DN will lay off 5% more that The Post.

Who's been minding the switch? Millions in advertising has flowed into The DN accounts. After all of these years they must let families go?
Legally organized entities never change. When they lay off people few options remain to protect themselves. Discussions of employer loyalty often turn into painful lies.

I'm really frustrated that with him as editor, the paper has resolved to become "More Mormon." I dealt with having the LDS Church News come in my Saturday paper and CHOSE to receive this paper instead of the other out of town owned paper. I'm very sad at all of this news. My heart goes out to these journalists (because yes, part of the staff will be those working in the newsroom).

I wonder how many times the News told these people that they were their most important assets? Wonder why I don't see them throwing computers and couches out the window?

get rid of Cannon. He was the wrong editor to begin with. The paper lost all credibility to people like me when they brought in a partisan politico to run it.
