Always gotta remember that the gospel is true, even if people sometimes aren't. Our testimonies shouldn't be based on the behaviors of others, but on doctrine.
On the flip side, it would really be great to have "famous" members of the church reflect the straight & narrow (I know -- it's a lifetime of striving for EVERYONE).
It is just so hard to explain the importance of dressing/behaving modestly to my kids when LDS stars are sporting immodest clothes & behavior.
My deepest appreciation & admiration for those who are great examples! We're striving, too!

This was outstanding and it helped me to look at my attitude and expectations of these LDS performers. One example where I choose to focus on the negative was Julianne, she stated in Cosmopolitan that she is a virgin, yet I was unhappy that she posed with nothing on wrapped up in a flag. I was proud of Ashely Delarusa, or whatever her last name is, who was on the show a couple of seasons, she always wore more modest dresses.
I am proud of these kids and all the kids of all groups that have competed and succeeded. There is another LDS who will be in a competition, that is The Next Food Network Star on the Food channel, the show starts this Sunday evening.
I stated that just like many blacks are lending their support to Obama, because they are excited to see one of their own doing so well, after many years of suppression and being treated poorly, we as Mormon's are excited about the LDS who are doing well, we too have been treated poorly, look at what Romney had to endure in the race, with the Huckabee comments, it was tasteless. Thanks Brother Card

Enjoyed the article.
However I am confused that Romney's (or anyone else's) "strong anti-illegal-immigrant position" should be galling to a LDS. What have I missed about Church teachings that would make this so?
This is a serious question.

Thanks, you expresed the feelings of fellow "villagers" so well. The church is such a big tent. It is nice to know that within the parameters of "the law" that there is room for individuals.
On immigration, even my wife and I have different ideas as to how to address the problem. So we each respect and love each other and learn "line upon line".

You know, I really enjoy your columns and your books. I think mainly because of the very thing this column explores, the fact that we are all on the same team, but that we are also individuals with individual interpretations - and that is what is great! I pray that we can remember that this is our strength and not exclude or judge when we feel someone is stepping out of the "mold". Continue to make us ponder these things.
I appreciate your fresh approach and individualism in your writing. Thank you
