This place makes great food in great environment. I think everyone who has ever eaten there would prefer it to stay. But if they have to improve I-15, please consider relocating further north on Mainstreet. There are lots of good places nearby. Please don't close your doors, you are a landmark for our city.

If Karen's restaurant in Ogden on 24th Street can relocate and make it, Sill's can to.

The state figures it's better to sacrifice Sill's and Doug and Emmie's, than affect one of the ugliest and dirtiest businesses in Layton: Hatch Auto Repair (a large body shop).
So the old restaurants will go, and visitors to Layton will be greeted by the sight of a junkyard-looking business, at the exit.
Typical Utah thinking.
Hopefully, the Sills family can come together and work towards a larger restaurant in the area.

When the Spudnut Shop closed it doors in Bountiful, which had been part of the Carmack family for nearly 50 years, and an icon on our Main Street, and tried to relocate, it didn't work! Not so much about the new location, but more about the quality of the food from the many years from a "seasoned" grill. I have eaten at Sills many times and the atmosphere was the same as the Spudnut Shop...good old regulars and great food. The Sills had their scones and the Carmacks had their melt in your mouth Spudnuts! It's hard to see such great family businesses go away to progress. I thank the Sill family for some great meals over the years and best wishes for finding a new place on Main Street that will help the tradition continue for the next generation. I'll bring my grandkids!

I remember my mom and grandmother sharing stories of when they worked together at Sill's. They alays talked about the regulars and the great people they worked for. I've always enjoyed the good food and great atmosphere there. If the Sill's choose not to relocate, they will be missed. Good luck to the Sill family, and thanks for making Sill's Cafe a great place to be.

I used to go there during my lunch at Davis High... I always loved their scones. Those were my heydays... now I went back to visit the community, it isn't the same as it was before. It's getting uglier with traffic walls around SLC and I'm sure eventually it'll go around Davis. Wwhhhyy?? They should put a limit on growing sprawl in all direction in the community!

Carmack's failed because they thought they were an important part of the community... and never considered that they may not be.
I was in high school when the store went down, came back, and then sputtered.
I guess I'm partially to blame since I didn't go to the new store.

I wonder if Utahns will finally be happy when everything is covered in concrete and the only places to eat are big corporate franchise restaurants.

It breaks my heart to see Sill's go, as a former business associate of John who's seen his family go through plenty in the last year or two. Curse your black heart, UDOT, for wanting to kill a Layton icon in the name of supposed 'progress'.
This isn't the way these things are supposed to turn out.

Behind the sob-story of the Carmack's loss of their Main Street location is this reality: If they had had fire insurance, they might still own the business. The fire that destroyed the old location was arguably not their fault, but the lack of insurance and under-capitalization forced them to sell out. The rest of the story is less about location or "grill seasoning" and more about brand dilution and managerial incompetance.
Contrary to the problems with Carmack's, the Sill's move is being forced upon them by UDOT, and is outside of their control.

In defense of Hatch Auto, they are one of the finest businesses in town. They work hard for their money and they help many people.
On the map that I saw, keeping Hatch Auto has nothing to do with closing Sill's cafe. On the map that I saw, the new road, which would form in front of Sill's Cafe and go northward. down Main Street, would make it impossible to get to Sills Cafe.

I'm sorry to see it go, but traffic is a mess in this area, especially with the new train station there. A upgraded I-15 interchange is needed there in the area to releive some of the pressure off the surrounding roads(gentile and hill field rd come to mind). I'm in favor of the upgrade. I think progess is good in this case.
Other relocated business in the area have done ok. I still take my business to them. Elmers auto clinic (now in Clearfield) and Layton feed store (now Dallas Green on antelope dr) come to mind.
If Sill's relocates close by I'll still go there, they have good food at a great price. My biggest concern would be that the UDOT gives them a fair price for the property. And if Sill's does close down then I can still go to Doug and Emiy's or Grannie Annies for the same good food.
I wish them well.

I live in Layton and have been shocked at the amount of obesity we have in our community. Restaurants like Sills may be family owned, but they are still a major contributor of health problems we face.

I use to eat at the Carmack's in Bountiful many long years ago (graduated from HS in 74). My sister who lived out of state made sure she had one Spudnut when she came to town and a Root Beer in a mug. Boy did things changed when they moved, the atmosphere was bad as was the food. I gave up on that place after only 2 visits. Now I only come out to Bountiful to go to the Dentist and visit my parents graves. Long gone are those days in the summer of 1972 when I rode my bike to Viewmont HS from almost North Salt Lake to go to summer school drivers ed and I treated my self to a burger and cold drink on the way home. Sorry about the place in Layton, there are so few of those classic places to eat left anymore. Pete is right Utah loves those franchises and tax dollars they bring. Perhaps I will hop into the car and take my hubby to lunch at Sills, although I have never been there it sounds like my kinda place.

I live in San Diego California now but Sill’s was one of the few places left in Layton that I still recognize from my youth I'm sorry to see if leave. I remember when John's dad Golden Sill was my bishop. A very good man.
Good luck John

I seriously can't believe the government thinks it is ok to come in and take over private business and land where ever they please. I'm surprised they didn't come in there with guns and raid the place! Isn't that what they usually do? Or is that only in Texas? The government should have set apart land long ago in order to expand the freeways when needed. Horrible city planning. We have an inefficient government. I go to sills once or twice a week. It will be a sad day for the city of Layton when this landmark gets torn down. I spent many seminary classes eating scones at sills. Lots of good memories... I will fully support a new sills if it is relocated.

I remember a particular saturday morning in August on my Birthday when I was 8 or 9 when my Dad woke me up and said lets go to Sills. I also remember the many days in High School where we skipped class to go eat at Sills. Funny thing 13 yrs later I talked to some local High School students skipping class to eat at Sills. Maybe the grades will go up at the local schools, but the great memories and life lessons will be missed out on. Sills is a great place for both the food and atmosphere. Good Luck!
Rest of the Story | 11:48 a.m. May 19, 2008
Regarding Carmack's in Bountiful, it needs to be noted that the "second" Carmack's was different ownership (not the original family) with the rights to use the Carmack's name. Hence, it was not the same good-old Carmack's environment before it's demise from the fire.
two squares deals | 1:11 p.m. May 19, 2008
at Sill's you get a square deal in food quality for the money. the scones are scrumpious. And to "Heart Disease" let it be known that Sill's oatmeal is absolutely the best. Oh, yah, oatmeal is good for your heart too, and they sell plenty of it!
at Hatch's you get another square deal in the quality of work for a square price. (they fixed, for less than $100, a problem I'd had with a vehicle that the dealer, with 4 service visits & over $2000 hadn't been able to fix). they've always been honest and up-front in their dealings with me.

Don't Agree | 1:16 p.m. May 19, 2008
Sill's is still the only restaraunt ever where I left $0 tip. I was treated with contempt and the food was practically thrown at me. Our waitress was quick to help the obvious regulars, however, I actually had to get up and go find her when we didn't receive our food and when we were ready for the bill. We weren't in a hurry but she even ignored me when I tried to get her attention verbally.
Doug and Emmys was just the opposite. They were very attentive and very nice. They were just as busy but apologized for delays and made every attempt at the best customer service.
Although it is always sad to see a historic part of the community disappear, I won't be sad to see Sill's leave. It would be sad to see the building go, though.

Nobody forces you to eat at places like Sills. It is personal choice, not the restaurant that causes people to be obese.
brent hughes | 1:41 p.m. May 19, 2008
each time a local restaurant closes for any reason, we all suffer. all the chains taste the same, staff is always different, and its not the same atmosphere as sills, doug and emmys, lees cafe, and the greek burger store on 300 west in slc. lees cafe is long gone. when i was in high school,(1964) i used to deliver meat to lees. the slc rda bought the property on 300 west. i shop at local business', which is hard to do as many have closed. udot cannot build enough roads or freeways nor can we afford pay for enough roads to keep up with always increasing traffic.

Carmack's! Now THOSE guys knew how to make a doughnut! I swear those things would melt in your mouth! The original place on Main Street was always packed to the roof. I moved out of state and only ate at the new place once. Didn't seem to bad to me but it sure didn't have the "greasy-spoon, home cookin'" atmosphere of the original.
Seems like it was only yesterday...
Well, best of luck to Sill's to keep their doors open somewhere!

Mr. Sill is one of those kinda guys that makes an otherwise ordinary place, a great community to live in. In the early 80s after my dad died, my mother still had 3 of my siblings living at home. Mr. Sill kind of adopted them and for a few years made Christmas a very magical season.
I hope if he chooses to stay in business that he will be able to find a place that will support him and keep his clientèle happy. Him and his family deserve the best and Layton City would be losing a great asset without his business.

Carmacks was the bomb. We would go on dougnut runs and bring a mess of them back to the school. I miss the good burgers. I miss the great shakes. AND YES.... I miss the doughnuts and sweetrolls. I have only been to Sills a couple of times. It is pretty good as well. Progress sucks sometimes. Good luck to Sills
Wouldn't have graduated! | 3:55 p.m. May 19, 2008
There is no way I would have graduated from Clearfield High 12 years ago if I hadn't missed so many morning classes getting a nice, hot scone or a heaping plate of biscuits and gravy from Sill's and Doug and Emmy's. I live in AZ now and I miss the great food from a place that still makes things the old fashion way! I'll be up there in three weeks and I'll have to enjoy myself once more before it's demolished. Best of luck to the Sill family. You're a Davis County tradition!

After getting the produce ready early in the morning, at Bowmans in Kaysville, it was off to Sills for a GREAT breakfast before going back to work. It's been about 22 or 23 years. I guess I better get back for another breakfast before it's too late. Maybe I should take my grandson for a little history lesson.
Thanks Sills and best of luck in the future!

First Period | 7:44 p.m. May 19, 2008
My friends and I spent more time at Sill's than we ever spent in our first period classes at Northridge High. One time the teacher even called us at the restaurant when a classmate had ratted us out. It would be a sad day to see it close.
Forever loved | 7:59 p.m. May 19, 2008
Sill's has been a landmark for over 50 years. It is a wonderful family resturant with great regulars, staff, food and prices. Nothing compares... not even the spin offs. It will be greatly missed if relocation doesn't happen.

What is wrong with some people??? Some guy wants to sue the golden arch because he ate there everyday and became ridiculously obese. Uh, hello! Are the little voices in your head talking again? Places like Sill's does not make you fat. Over eating, not exercising and many other reasons contribute to obesity. Sometimes, it's not even the food. It's genetic. So whether it's heart disease or obesity. People need to stop blaming restaurants for this. If this is what you think maybe you should not go out and eat anywhere. It's sad that a place like Sill's might have to go. It feels like a reunion with past friends each time you go to Sill's. Good luck Sill's..
