Just wondering | 6:40 p.m. May 15, 2008
I do not to say that mitigating circumstances shouldn't apply and that her remorse, responsibilities with her children, etc. shouldn't be taken into consideration, they should. But, if the situation were reversed, i.e. a 30 yr. old athletic coach having sex with a 17 year old girl, I suspect the sentence would be harsher (prison, lengthier term, etc.). I have no tolerance for those who perpetrate sexual acts on children at all - just wondering about double standards.

If she was given the 6 months in jail that was in the sentencing recommendation I would agree with the double standard argument. But 30 days? That is just an insult to every parent that has to send their child to school every day.

This and other cases make we wonder, should we maybe consider changing statutory rape laws from 18 to 16. You think about a 17 year old male having sex with this teacher. We are all offended and probably rightfully so. But, kids that are 17 are having sex with people that are 18+ and visa versa. Really what is the purpose of statutory rape laws? Its a public policy law. But, if society is going to condone or at least look the other way with typically teenage sex, then why should this case be so offensive. The only real justification for this case to be prosecuted is the fact she was a teacher. But what if she was just a single woman down the street? Are we going to castigate her for having such a relationship? Is that good public policy. Obviously, there is a point where a teenager is not old enough to consent. But 17? What about 16? I think most young people these ages understand the ramifications of their sexual behavior.
