great idea | 5:40 a.m. May 14, 2008
What a great move. Entertainment has been so overpriced for so long that this is a breath of fresh air.

Well, they have already made the big bucks of the people about time they become affordable plus their talent is overated, if they weren't LDS would they still have the followers?

Here in Missouri, they have the Muny, an outdoor theater, many famous actors got their start there. They put on about eight productions each summer, and they have the back eight to ten rows that are free, they have done that from day one. They have plenty of paid seats and every seat is full.

Great idea, i don't think that entertainment is overpriced compared to any other city, it just Utah has larger families so it is hard to pay for 8 people instead of 3 or 4.... But it is great of Merrill to do this! Good on him!

What a wonderful idea!! Good for you Merrill. I hope it will be a huge success!!!

Would the Osmonds charge $5 admission to their concerts? Put your $$ where your big wide smile is!
Appreciated | 10:17 a.m. May 14, 2008
I appreciate this effort! When we lived in Utah County, with our limited budget and large family, we were grateful for BYU concerts and plays, for the greate community theater that existed then. We couldn't afford big commercial concerts and still can't! In our area, tickets, even for community sponsored ones, are in the $25 per ticket range.
And for Five Bucks--As for why there is a $5 charge, it costs money to put on concerts--this is a good win-win situation. People pay a reasonable amount and costs can be covered. Why should those who have worked hard and become successful be expected to subsidize people who expect a free ride?

It's the effort that counts | 11:45 a.m. May 14, 2008
Hey--I'm sure the $5 for an adult seat will go towards the maintenance of the amphitheatre...and advertising to get attendance up for the shows. These days, $5 won't even get you a gallon & a half of gas....so and milk is heading that way, too. Perhaps eventually the concerts will go free as they are in my area.........get a radio station to sponsor them and advertisers to tote their goods....but you have to start somewhere.

I applaud this worthy effort! The Davis Arts Council (sponsored by Layton City & others)has been offering FREE Sunday concerts in the park for over 25 years. Ryan Shupe performed there as a youngster. Bachauer pianists perform every June. Local artists--both professional and semi-professional perform regularly: this year world-class soprano Celina Shafer, comedy group "The Other 3 Tenors," Sun Shade 'n' Rain, vocalist/composter Cori Connors and more! Every Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. It's a great tradition that more and more communities are starting. Let's continue our wholesome entertainment options for families!

So entertaunment isn't overpriced in Utah. Well, it's WAY overpriced in other cities. For all those that are bashing the Osmonds, so what if they've made their millions, this is still a good thing for a good reason. And if you don't like their music, you're free to listen to something else. Miley Cirus comes to mind, talk about overrated.

Utah county crowds don't seem to enjoy concerts much. I have noticed that the concerts at the Utah County fair are very poorly attended. They get a few hundred on the best day. Emery county averages 4000 people. I don't get it. I think folks in Utah County are spoiled and lazy.
Anyhow... Very nice effort! Maybe it will grow on us.

I think it's admirable for Merrill to do this. Any time someone attempts to give back to the community, it's a good thing. When I lived in Utah, I would have jumped at the chance to have cheap quality entertainment.
To "affordable:" What's your beef with the Osmonds anyway? They have a LOT more non-LDS fans than LDS ones. They've sold millions of records and are still popular after 50 years. That doesn't sound overrated (note the two r's.) It sounds legendary.

Confused, Let me help you out a bit. The only thing happening in Emery the watch paint dry event and the county fair. Up here we got lots of things to do for entertainment. Get a life country bumpkin.

That would be super Merrill!! I would be willing to make the drive to Thanksgiving Point and bring my family for a good show! I think that's great of you to bring something together like that!

I don't live in Utah County, or in Utah period. But Utah has a lot of Noonatics. Who is in charge of the booking?
