Here we go. Government won't tighten their belts like everyone else has to. They just reach in your pocket and get into your wallet. Too bad my boss won't give me an "inflationary increase". And the economy has just started to sour. Buck up Becker and tighten your own belt. My wallet is already empty.
FINE | 6:18 a.m. May 10, 2008
fine,
I guess the mayor of slc just does not want people to go downtown and spend their money.
I am sure the other cities in the valley will be more then happy to receive the business.

Socialism requires huge amounts of funding. Use the Chicago model - Fees for EVERYTHING. Make new rules. If that isn't enough, raise the fines.
How about $2,500 fee for you domestic partner registry. Start there.

I hate to tell you, but if Becker believes that the current fine for an expired meter is 100 dollars, he is in for a HUGE shock when he sees the book balances. The fine for an expired meter is 10 dollars NOT 100. IF he wants 100 dollars for an expired meter fine, then he'd better be prepared for every parking slot in Salt Lake City to be empty. NO city in this country would be idiotic enough to charge 100 dollars if your meter runs out of time.

.... to avoid SLC

Becker and his Communist aggressors need seriously to be removed from their office of influnce, and placed as semi-junior janitors at the local elementary or middle schools where they can enforce the toilet paper and chewing gum rules and regulations as well as removal of graffiti from bathroom walls.

Ludicrous
I thought a parking ticket fine of $40 in San Francisco was high! Salt Lake parking fines are ludicrous! No single parking problem deserves that high a fine. No meter maid cost is that expensive. Give it up, you overpriced and over zealous public servants.

Doesn't bother us at all. My wife and I rarely - twice in two years - go downtown. No reason to go there. We live on the East Bench and shop at the malls, Home Depot, Office Depot, Harmons at Brickyard. We watch movies usually at Century 16. Dine, when we do, at our favorites outside downtown. So go ahead Becker, fine, fine, fine all you want on parking. Drive everyone out of downtown.

If government had more actual business people elected to office (lawyers, consultants, activists and "organizers" don't count, sorry) at all levels America would benefit.
People who have actually had to meet a payroll, fill out the reams of government paperwork required to do pretty much anything anymore, bought health insurance on the open market etc etc.
Folks like this realize there is no free lunch, that when expenses exceed income you don't just go out and dun your customers (taxpayers) for more cash.

raising taxes | 9:23 a.m. May 10, 2008
Typical government speak. Fines should be imposed to change behavior, not to raise revenue. That's what taxes are for. Just reading the expired meter fee has changed my behavior. I will not be spending any more time in SLC than I have to, and certainly not in a car. Downtown merchants will only get my business online or by moving to a more patron friendly area. Becker, et al, obviously do not understand why downtown is dead. Who enjoys going downtwon when there is no place to park and needing to constantly worry about the meter?

Compare these fees and fines.
An overdue parking meter costs a one-time visitor more than a long term business license.
Parking near TRAX or in a handicapped zone costs more than a liquer license.
Put the screws to visitors to pay for your profligate spending. Socialized transit is one piece of that big cow-pie.
You do need $35 million to pay just one-seventh the cost of Airport TRAX. You've also got to pay for the UTA free fare zone and free passes for SLC employees on TRAX and FrontRunner.
This is a great reminder to visit Downtown Salt Lake, certainly not often, but rather, NEVER AGAIN!

I too thought the current fine for an expired meter was about ten bucks.
No shopping in SLC for me | 11:59 a.m. May 10, 2008
I will NEVER park on a parking meter in SLC to go into a store. $10 is way too much and $15 (I assume some idiot made a slight mistake) is ridiculous. OK, I know the Becker doesn't care, he figures people will park on the meters and they will get tickets and they will pay the $15. Some will but I won't. I'll only go where I can park in a parking lot, no meters for me. This increase should be rejected by SLC voters but it won't be, they are the same dopes that elected Becker in the first place.

We have a major problem in Utah
We have City Hall violating the peoples right to vote
The State also in in violation of a bridging the PEOPLES right to vote
This is covered by the Constitution
I have always said
Why would anyone want to go down town and shop
Quite clear we have a problem charging tourist more than Utahns.
Tourist
Stay away from Utah
Nuts in charge

Wow...SLC residents have got to be smarter than this. Perfect example of how the Democratic Party leaders do not understand business or the role of government or how little money most of us in Utah have.
Raising taxes and fees do not fix financial problems they drive businesses to other locals. Look at downtown SLC these days...ghost town would be a perfect description.
Fix the shortfalls by creating a magnet for businesses and shoppers to come to this run down city. Cut fees and taxes. Get rid of expensive unnecessary operating costs. Downtown SLC is blighted by a lack of good shopping and easy to park locations. Take out the parking meters (they are very expensive and do they even pay for themselves?) Make it easier to patronize the shop owners. Sales tax revenue is easy to collect and does not require emptying parking meters for a few bucks.

Since when has it been $100 for an expired meter? I got a parking ticket last about 18 months ago and it was only $20.

The only time the fine for illegally parking in an accesible parking space is $190 is if the individual does not pay in a timely manner. For all intents and purposes it is only $100. But if any increase is imposed the additional funding should be specifically dedicated to improving or creating additional accessible parking. People with disabilities who must park their vans on the street are often not able to find any space available that will accommodate the wheel chair lift. This is a problem that should be added. The increased fines would be a good way to do this. That is if the current Administration and Council are concerned with the needs of people with disabilities.

Does anyone else have any other ideas for fixing the deficit in the Salt Lake City budget? Granted, I really don't think that parking tickets and such will make up for the deficit but better this than my property taxes increased. Becker could cut various jobs throughout the city, scaling back benefits, etc. but everyone would complain about that too. Most of you are really quick to accuse but I haven't heard one viable option from anyone. If you think you can do a better job, run for mayor.
