Welcome to Utah.
A pretty trashy state.

We should be able to deal with waste from trucks using legislation.
What we're ignoring is pop cans, beer cans, water bottles and the like. There needs to be a deposit for return system put in place. People are less likely to heave them out the window, and when they do there are a lot more bottle pickers going around getting them. Plus, even though we know in Utah that conservation and environmentalism are bunk and landfills and resources are limitless, it keeps stuff out of the waste stream.

Anonymous: do you honestly believe putting a 5 cent deposit on a beer can is going to make this person keep it in the car until they get to the recycling center? Please. What we need, and can't seem to accomplish, is for people to give a hoot about their surroundings and to think of others instead of themselves.

Trash, trash and more trash, is an early warning sign of a society in major free-fall decline.

Apparently, none of you ever lived back in NYC in the 60's and 70's

Utah is pristine in relation to what it was like then. It can be fixed, but for God's sake, what do you say we raise a generation that knows right from wrong as a matter of reason and logic, and not go about demanding legislation, tickets, and refunds.

Why is everything expected to be solved by the government?

This is the opinion page. Don't be bringing "reason and logic" into it!

John -
Just keep talking yourself into believing you DON'T live in a land of trash.
I'm sure it will make you feel better.

John,
Trash (like polluted air) will be always be with us.
This is Utah.
People would never stoop so low as to pick trash up while out walking.
It's below them.

The law requires trucks hauling trash and debris to be covered. If they are not, get their license plate (and any other information) and call the Salt Lake Valley Health Department at 313-6641.
