What about SUU | 1:25 a.m. May 7, 2008
Hey Des News, what about reporting on SUU? Last year Southern Utah led ALL Utah schools in percentage of football players who graduated. Why aren't their APR numbers reported? They have the full 62 scholarships in football and open against Air Force in August. This is certainly worth noting, eh?

Kudos to the Cougars, UU and Utah State, nice job keep it up.

Do they play football at SUU?

Why not recriut in state kids to WSU instead of leftover kids from California that dont make grades and have off feild issues. They have had chnces to get very good in state kids with high gpa's and no off feild issues. I could have sworn I heard Mac say he was going to recruit in state kids. I guess not.
What about SUU? | 7:48 a.m. May 7, 2008
I didn't realize SUU had a football team.

HS Coach you are absolutly right, I have been saying this for years. Weber will never compete unless they get more local kids.
It's Weber | 8:41 a.m. May 7, 2008
How hard can academics be?
BCS Advantange | 8:59 a.m. May 7, 2008
The thing that is amazing to me is the Myles Brand the president of the NCAA stated that there is a correlation between money and academic process because many of the schools that failed to reach the standard cited lack of funding as a reason that scores were so low.
What kind of a slap in the face does he need to realize that this is another side-effects of the BCS? What a joke. Nobody pay attention to the elepahnt in the room.
I would be really interested to see a complete list that includes BCS teams that will actually get sanctioned. Honestly the BCS makes college athletics much like MLB where whoever has the biggest pocket book is the only one with a real chance of winning anything.

Mac does the same things that lead to his firing at Utah. Perhaps he needs to go back to school.
SUU Football | 9:44 a.m. May 7, 2008
You didn't know SUU had a football team? Really? They went 0-11 last year and won four games in the past three years. Bad times in Cedar City...

Coach McBride has several of my athletes. He does an excellent job in recruiting in-state kids. Perhaps your bitter, because your kids are not getting picked up. There is only so much talent in Utah. If a program wants to be competitive, they must be able to bring in talent. California is relatively close, and they have a large talent base, where there are legitimate athletes that have been looked over - unlike Utah, where A LOT of coaches believe that a good hs football player will automatically excel at the next level.
Also, quit putting pressure on your players that are college material, to stay in-state. The last thing a young man with that type of decision needs is a guilt trip about good ol' Utah. An experience at the Y or the U, albeit good, fails in comparison with some of the top programs in the country. It's nice to see Utah players picked up by high profile programs, and excel.

The fact that any athlete doens't make it through school is baffling to me. There is so much money put into academic resources at these schools including specific tutors, practice tests, academic advisors, counselors, etc. Just a reminder that these are athlete only resourses. Just any hard working student at the campus cannot participate. Even with these resourses, many of these athletes can't make it through school. The bottom line is that the "bottom line" is the almighty dollar, and good athletes make the school money in ways most of us can't imagine. If you want to have some fun, check out your local college athletic office budget and see how much money go into just keeping athletes in school.

Weber State should either step its program up a level and try to get in the WAC or cancel football and try to get into the WCC. The Big sky has become a joke since Reno , Idaho and Boise left. No one even comes to basketball in a 25 win season. I canceled my season tickets. The league has only the Montana Schools and Weber worth watching now. NAU is okay. But really its went from like the best I-AA football league to 4th or even 5th and in basketball it use to be rated about 12-16 in the sargin every year now down to around 25-30.. Time to move on Weber or just forget sports all the way around.
Id just call it good in football and go join the WCC in basketball.
Tyler
unhappy Weber state fan! And we are not in large numbers!

Time to drop Golf | 12:01 p.m. May 7, 2008
Seems like it's time to drop Golf for the Men, since they're the worst student-athletes at BYU and the U!
Just wait. . . | 12:09 p.m. May 7, 2008
For all your naysayers out there who joke about SUU football, it's a new era in Cedar City. Coach Lamb and his staff have rejuvenated the place and the program. Watch out for the T Birds next season. My prediction? SUU wins more games than Weber State. Write it down.
re: BCS advantage | 12:50 p.m. May 7, 2008
There was an article through Yahoo this morning that gave the full list of sanctioned schools. I don't remember exactly what they were, but there were only two or three from the BCS schools. I think that you may have hit something that is blatantly being ignored, (not that the BCS could be guilty of blatantly doing anything).
On a side note, UNLV and SDSU were our conference representatives.

My Nephew (who I will not name) is a very talented Local athlete, when it came to B.Y.U. and Utah Recruting him he was told he wasnt the right color to qualify for a Athletic scholarship sorry.. Talk about reverse discrimination sadly in this day and age if you are an excellent football player but white it works against you.......
Maybe this is why not more local kids are given scholarships in sports..

Watch out | 1:09 p.m. May 7, 2008
Watch out for SUU this year? That's funny.
McGill Fan | 1:10 p.m. May 7, 2008
Whatever happened to letting the best college age players perform on the field? In basketball how many Utahns remember Billy McGill, the great All America center for Utah, who left school illiterate but scored 60 against BYU and ended up with a fairly successful NBA career. If he had not been allowed to play college ball, it's highly unlikely that he would ever have earned decent wages in any career. Basketball gave him his chance to succeed.
Reverse discrimination? | 3:33 p.m. May 7, 2008
There is no such thing as reverse discrimination, just, "discrimination."
Who cares | 3:57 p.m. May 7, 2008
Weber is a 2nd rate program anyway. They should drop football and try to put some "student"- in student athlete.
I remember when they had to hold a bake sale to keep their program alive, why bother, they arent worth the cookies they sold.

Being a former HS AND JC Coach, I understand some of Reality's and McGill Fan's concern for many borderline kids attempting to participate today in College Scholarships.I don't believe however, that todays College coaches have to follow a % Quota for minority vs White in handing out scholarships in any sport. If I am incorrect, lets have someone out there, who can varify this ,enlighten all of us on the subject. One thing that I am certain about, is that regardless of color, if the kid has the grades; has the brains with the GPA, Has the outstanding college level talent(including size and speed)he is going to play for somebody. This will be in Utah or ouside Utah. You name it! Only where the size and speed is in question do they often miss on a kid. They haven't yet been able to measure the heart within for the likes of a Ty Detmer or an Steve Largent.Just ask Coach Edwards what his first reaction and feelings for success re; Detmers chances for becoming a Great QB????
Think about it | 4:45 p.m. May 7, 2008
SUU might not have the best football program right now, but at least they'll be highly employed when they graduate.
Weber's athletes will be washing the SUU grad's windshields for money at freeway offramps.

Who wins more | 4:51 p.m. May 7, 2008
games this year? SUU, Weber, or USU? USU fans swear they have excellent talent, more than in a long time, even with losing players to the draft and a coach who is losing more and more games each season. The race for the worst UT team is between SUU and USU.
re:SLC | 6:06 p.m. May 7, 2008
I agree emphatically. Snow College could beat the USU-Weber-SUU All-Star team!
RE; Reality | 6:25 p.m. May 7, 2008
Sorry dude but I think your nephew is telling you a story. I have two kids both on full rides to D1 programs, they are white. The bottom line, if your good enough you'll get a scholarship. Do you really believe if your nephew was that good they would turn him down, no matter what color he was. Most of the players BYU recruits are white, colleges go after the best athletes period.

You really expect us to believe your post? Come on! Why aren't you filing a lawsuit and suing the socks off the local schools? That would be a slam dunk discrimination case.

The NCAA is a joke. they have no business being involved in college sports anymore. they are not in touch with the student athlete anymore. all they care about is whether so called boosters ever gave a gift to some players parents or whether the BCS will continue to pony up millions of dollars despite ignoring the need for a legitimate national football championship playoff system.
McBride is the best coach in Utah. period.

RE: Tyler | 12:03 a.m. May 8, 2008
Tyler, the only way Weber State gets into the West Coast Conference (WCC) is if Weber becomes a private Jesuit school. Good luck with that one.
With that said, you want SUU's APR, well football, men's basketball and baseball lost scholarships. There's your state-leading APR.

The Best record in football for a Utah college last year and this year belongs to Snow College. They have placed more athletes in top D1 schools across the nation and in the NFL than any other school in Utah. Hey Weber State, why not recruit more studs from Snow before they get gobeled up by Oregon or Nebraska?
MAC | 1:41 a.m. May 8, 2008
Mac and the Cats made huge strides in the fall and spring over the past year. Don't believe me, look up the facts. Look up there APR (Academic Progress Rate). You want to talk about wins and loses the Cats will win more games in the fall then SUU and USU combined. Give me a break about Snow College, a complete fool could win at snow, oh ya they have one of those guys. Recruiting you want to bag on Mac for recruiting, you are barking up the wrong tree with that one. Mac could sale Obama to that Clinton lady to give up the bid. Why would you ever drop a sport, well for one the game of football teaches every person that plays it trust, accountabilty, love and most important of all family. People get a life, enjoy the sport weather you bleed cougar blue, ute red, t-bird red, aggie blue, badger blue, rebel red or wildcat purple. Love the game for what it is. KNOW THE FACTS!!! DON'T READ THE PAPERS

Academics is huge, these Athletes need to do their very best to utilize this as an opportunity to spring board a career.
That said, every body has strengths and weaknesses, I do not see members of the debate team required to run a 5.0 40 yard dash or the German club bench pressing 200 pounds.
I do see company CEO's at Golds Gym who have no athleticism and are not physically attractive. They are working on it, we should all have a desire to improve.
Mac is a great recruiter! He has brought many in state players onto his team! His job is to win... he can not recruit in state kids just to do it. It is not your job on the line, it is his. I firmly believe if Mac has a choice between two players of equal talent, he pulls the local kid in. This dates back to his time at the U of U as well.
Look at the results... he produced the leading rusher in the Big Sky Conference two years running. This is a local kid who was passed on by the big three. The Seniors this year represent Macs recruiting.

I was recruited to the U by Mac many years ago and I can tell you that he was determined to get the best in-state recruits every year, even if there were better kids out of the state. Eventually, that started to change and he was looking to get more out of state kids than local kids--especially Hawaii! That's when the U started falling off and they fired Mac. Now he got a job at WSU and he's back to looking at out of state kids over local kids. True to form, he's losing again. Mac has really lost touch with what he was trying to do back in his early U days. Time for retirement, young man.

Didn't Coach Mac just recieve the lifetime coaching award from the Utah Coaches Association? How quickly you forget...naysayers. Coach Mac inherited a program that was already plagued with problems. Although they have been making progress, it does not appear if it is happening fast enough.
I believe in Coach Mac; he'll turn it around. Just think about Kobe Bryant, one day he's a scapegoat for every media outlet, down the road, NBA MVP.
Nobody's perfect, but it's easier to criticize someone when you are protected by your computer and monitor....ha!

Just that Weber state should get out of the big sky. Its took a major step down. Weber State should do whatever they need to move up or just give up on sports period.

people who comment on how student athletes should perform in the classroom forget a few key points. They aren't recruited for their academics. Sure there is a set time limit for team practices, but most of the kids who want to make something of themselves go the extra mile everyday. Class for four hours, four hour practice, plus all the extra time you put in individually, then actually you don't have too much time left. And to the gomer who talked about golf, golfers miss more time for tourneys than any other sport misses for games throughout the entire year, add in about 5 hours of practice a day, and thats a pretty busy schedule.

There is enough blame to go around between the coaches and players but before you crucify Coach Max what about the players. These are MEN who have been given a opportunity that few men and women get an that is a scholorship. All that is required of them is to keep their noses clean and at the bare minimun maintain a C average. They do their homework and show up for class they will get a passing grade. This is the hand we were deal with for this season, let's deal with it and move on. In the off season next year make the corrections but don't even consider dropping Weber Football.
Weberman | 2:06 p.m. May 13, 2008
I love how some people come to these message boards to run down programs to make themselves feel better about their own. If you really have to do that, how good can your program be?
I would rather spend an afternoon at Stewart Stadium than any stadium anywhere, because they are my 'Cats. The level of football may be higher elsewhere, but why should I care? All I care about is pulling for the players, on and off the field. Mac may have lost a step or two, but he is doing a great job to improve facilities, talent, and academic performance among his players at WSU.
As far as washing someone's windshields, it's been my experience that the people who fail in life are the ones with negative attitudes much like the author of that comment.
I've got my season tickets rain or shine. Go Wildcats!
